Kaieteur News Today Chanderpaul fails to show up
From Sean Devers at Providence ...... Earlier, Guyana resumed on 312-3 with Dowlin on 121 and Shivnarine Chanderpaul on 78 and their 151-run fourth wicket stand ended before a ball was bowled in the day when Chanderpaul failed to show up to bat in scorching heat without anybody being informed about this development. The match referee, umpires and the Windward Islands Manager later informed that no explanation on Chanderpaul’s absence was given by the Guyana Manager or Captain, although it is understood that the Test player had to leave Guyana to attend a WIPA function in Trinidad and was expected to return on Monday. Guyana Manager Carl Moore refused to explain to the media why Chanderpaul did not resume his innings or why the opposition was not informed of this development. Lockhart Sebastian, the Windwards Manager who scored five centuries in 92 first-class matches between 1971 and 1989, said he was amazed that no one told anybody why Chanderpaul did not come out to bat yesterday and refused to allow the Guyanese a substitute fielder when the Windwards began their reply after lunch. “This is not a curry goat match… this is a first-class encounter and things like this are allowed to happen and we wonder why West Indies cricket is in the state that it is in. Chanderpaul told Devon (Smith) yesterday that he was here just to take a knock but we assumed he was joking. If he knew he had to leave then he should not have played and given one of the others youngsters a chance,” Sebastian said. Moore hinted that he knew before that Chanderpaul would have had to leave the country and a senior Guyana Cricket Board official said the Board would investigate why the Manager or Captain failed to inform the opposition or match officials about Chanderpaul’s absence. Guyana’s Coach Albert Smith said he was not aware that Chanderpaul had planned to ‘give up’ his wicket and added that Chanderpaul was a part of the selection of the final eleven. “He is our most dependable batsman and has done so much for West Indies cricket as a top-class batsman, but if he knew he was just using this game for some practice and would then leave the guys he should have at least informed me as the Coach and maybe allowed one of the youngsters to play,” the long serving Smith said. ................. |
