Press Statement – for immediate Release

Guyana Day 2008

Release for the media Monday May 5, 2008

Sunday May 18th at the Performing Arts theater of York College in Jamaica, Queens, will witness the 8th year that New Yorkers have had the opportunity to mark the occasion of Guyana's Independence with a multi-disciplinary, multi-ethnic presentation of Guyanese folk art and popular culture.

For the nation entering its 42nd year as an independent nation, and in need of healing since the start of the millennium, cultural events in the Diaspora serve as a salve to our open fissures.

This year Aunty Comsee (the venerable impressionist Pauline Thomas) headlines this annual affair that has drawn over 1,000 Guyanese-Americans from the New York area and from afar. It is the one truly mixed audience that salutes culture that can be called Guyanese. From the rhythmic beats of the tassa and African drumming, strong interpretive dancing (the powerful Rose October) and comedy skit (the veteran Shivraj Mahadeo with a Hollywood resume), to the Taan singing of Rick Ramdehal and the Guyana Babu man Terry Gajraj, there promises to be a feast of Guyanese folk arts on display. Following their successes at past Guyana Day events, the kids from the Marilyn Bose and Verna Walcott dance troupes will delight the entire family.

If you remember Adrian Dutchin wowing the ladies last year, he is prepping for a tasteful encore. Tabla by the virtuoso Yashokamini Seunarine (a young girl with a stage presence) and Madrassi drumming and dancing will evoke a purist sense of delight.

Wait until you see the Bollywood dance numbers by two beautiful dancers, mixed in with the calypso rythms of Slingshot Drepaul and Mighty Rebel, Young Bill Rogers and Bisram Dubraj - all living in homeland. Nostalgia comes in the folksy Charlie Roots and the intense Sammy Baksh.

Guyana's Ambassador to the US Bayney Karan and the Consul General Brentnol Evans will grace the occasion as usual with Councilman Leroy Comrie. If you were at last year's Flag raising ceremony at the Bull on Broadway in Lower Manhattan, you couldn't help but be amazed at the rendition of Almira Brasse of the national anthem. This year she will again salute Guyana and the USA with her strong soulful renditions.

This three-hour event is free. As usual booth displays and an inimitable Guyanese ambience will greet families as they enter the state-of-the-art theater at York College in Queens, New York.

Even if you're attending the Guyana ay in the park (Roy Wilkins, I believe) on the Saturday, and will be at the Indian Arrival Day festivities at Smokey Park earlier that Sunday, it would be delight to have you at the York College event.

The sponsors, who will be named in this space from time to time (a sneaky way to keep this thread current), are to be commended for their support in these economic hard times for the businesses in Queens and Brooklyn. We are attracting a diversified group of businesses who like what this event is all about.

I've also been truly proud of the support from this uniquely diverse (no oxymoron intended) FREE program with a flavor that is truly Guyanese.

I am bringing my family from Schenectady for this fantastic show, whic I have attended in the past.

This is the only Guyanese event that strive to have a truly multi ethnic celebration. This is why I would always bring my family from upstate for this event. Also, its a free event and I heard that the committee wants to keep it that way.

They need all our support. SEE YOU ALL ON MAY 18. ALL ROADS, RAILWAYS, AILINES leads to York College ON SUNDAY, MAY 18.

I have never disrespected you nor make mention of your uncle, aunts or grandparents here. Is it because you promote an event of song and dance make you think you can tell these lies about my relatives? Or is it because of your self importance and lack of respect of others?

Let me make it damn clear to you Mr. Karimullar, the reason I asked the question is that I will not support any event planned by evil characters. You have just proven your disrespectable evilness upon my relatives, whom you do not know! I wonder whose relatives is next?

ICIP: You are not speaking my language on a subject that matters most to me.

The people that supports this event are the elites of patriotic Guyanese of all races, which you are not one of them.

Your sense of pride to hinder the unity of a people to assemble and exhibit their culture and heritage is beyond comprehension.

You have the energy to talk when no one listen.

You have the determination to march against unity when no one follows.

Your will to impose evil and hatred upon a people with great pride and positive determination will trample upon you in your path to no where.

You are messing with my kind.

Juno, you brought a chuckle to me. Here is my 2 cents on satire and a riposite to ICIP

I have disrespected all coolies and non-coolies on this BB and made mention of their names and handles. It is because I promote hate and vitriol that I think I can tell these untruths about the GNI coolies and non-coolies. I have no self-respect, do not respect others and think I'm not important.

Let me make it damn clear y'all...the reason I ask thee is that I will not join the society of good men and women, decent and caring, because that society does not include me. I have proven my disrespect to all the relatives of all the coolies and non-coolies, whom I know or don't know. I wonder where my next indecent assault is going next.

Now, see ICIP will be proud of me. Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

You are correct that I do not speak your language. I asked a simple question and Karimullar reckon off for my generation and you agreed with Karimullar. If a man has a committee organizing an event and I asked to name the committee, why does the man have to reckon off upon my family. You are blind to disrespect, but as a turncoat you know no respect.

I could care less whose family you have respected or disrespected in the past. They must have been too dumbdown to know! It is wrong for you to disrespect my family and now hide behind satire. Anyone with firing dendrites know it is severely wrong to discuss posters families here especially if to tell lies or make fun upon!

I never agree with Kari, and every poster is responsible for their own action through words.

I did entertain the humor part of his statement, but not about your family, though I think it was done in the most humorous way.

You know I always tell you point blank without any disrespect (as you quote it).

To begin with, a planned community event such as this was not call for any debate, so I don't know where this is going.

The flyer was poster several time. I am surprise that you let it pass you by without peeking who the committee members are.

BTW, are you coming or not.

ICIP, I notice Universal is named by the US Govt as the offical Narcotic Carrier involved in Smuggleing Drugs with "The Khan Organisation".

It is also alleged that while in Guyana, Persaud started to export cocaine in Ghee among other items
and primarily used Universal Airlines including a flight attendant
and several other unsuspecting couriers to be part of his narcotics business.

I understand the Cargo official for Universal, a next Shortie was a regular Drunk at Palm Court where Mr Persaud was Murdered.
I saw they were using Ghee,an item used by Hindus a lot for Religous purposes ......to help them smuggle their cocaine.

ICIP if the above is true would you say Vishnu Ma-pa-dee-o--ooh-shanti-oo ...... Universal Cargo Manager ...AKA Engineer has proven his disrespectful evilness for all Guyanese especially the Hindus!!
