Discuss (22) Next » Gunmen attack, rob Port Mourant vendors By Stabroek staff | February 5, 2010 in Local News Two gun-toting bandits terrorized vendors at the Port Mourant market around 3:30 am yesterday, battering and robbing a huckster of $57,000 while a vendor was robbed of $3,000. The bandits fired three shots in the air as they escaped, sending other vendors and hucksters scattering for cover in all directions. Five suspects have since been taken into custody and an identification parade is expected to be held today. The bandits gun-butted the huckster, Dhanmattie Ramdat, 46, of Mara, East Bank Berbice and dealt her several cuffs in her face because she dared to put up a fight to protect her money. The woman who sells at the New Amsterdam market refused to hand over the cash. A scuffle ensued between her and one of the bandits and she tore his shirt in the process. Her bravery must have angered the bandit who whipped out a gun and dealt her the blows. The woman who sustained injuries to face and ears fell while the bandit started hitting her. The gunmen also demanded money from Ruth Brijlall, 39, of Lesbeholden, Black Bush Polder and she was forced to hand over $3,000. Ramdat was about to make a purchase when one of the bandits pounced on her and told her to “give me the money.” Unaware that she was being robbed, the woman responded that she did not owe him any money. The other vendors are fearful for their lives and have called on the police to protect them because they risk their lives to be out at wee hours every morning to ply their trade. |

What a piece of jeweled journalism....calling the victimized lady a huckster, who was 'about to make a purchase' when she was attacked. Lets guess: the lady was indian, the perpetrators.....anyone? I am telling allyuh, when afc wins, there will be no more crimes....everyone will be given opportunities once denied. Jobs will flow, and the need to choke and rob will evaporate. |

What are the police in port Mourant doing?
I understand that an investigation is under way. Noel, you should take your concerns to the police stations. Stop blaming the PPP for crime. There is crime in every country in the world and the Police are the ones who take acton and solve crimes, not the Government. It takes time to investigate and interview witneses before the culprits can be caught. Most criminals plan their getaway sttategy before committing the crimes so sometimes it is very difficult to catch them.. |

What will you do if you find its is an Indian as has been the case with many Corentyne crimes? Put it this way crime in Guyanais worse than its ever been, definitely so in Berbice under the PPP. Berbice has far fewer people than they had prior to 1992. But you all want the PPP then flee to other countries. |

Why would a consumer shop at 3:00 AM in Guyana if not to buy and sell. My mom use to leave home that early to buy from the farmers who would come Corentyne and far as Mara to wholesale out their produce at the New Amsterdam market. We need changes. Right now the fossiled PPP/C administration is clueless and bankrupt with ideas. Hope the people vote on issues and not race and send a minority government to parliament. |

I am quite sure berbicians knew when the bridge was up it would usher in as more crime then it would development . After Annandale , Lusignan and Bartica everyone in living in Guyana deserve the crime they are experiencing because they remain docile about . If indians feel victimized march on the PPP HQ and torch it , if blacks feel victimized march on PNC HQ and torch it .

I told them not to come to Port Mourant/tain or Albion so they went to Rose Hall...well they get there share there.....Ramoutar look like he was soo pissed yet he could not do a thing....somoen was going to spit on him...he was lucky he avoided the incident...what a shame

They are PPP members of the Central committee. They will help choose the next President of Guyana. The sugar workers may be critical of the PPP but come next election they will hesitant to vote for any other party. |

Ramaji get real dude ! indian women on the courantyne were trained to shoot , make bombs and early warning signals . I know this for a fact because I was there many times and saw them being trained . Many women used to do vigil equally as the men. Dude if indian women were robbed of their jewellery in GT is was because they were dumb a55es to come to GT wearing jewellery. I know we had watch groups all over GT where indians would frequent to step in and intervene in the event of attacks . Besides the unrest in GT in the 60's ,majority of attacks on indians happened in indian dominated villages . Most people think most attacks against indian individuals happened in GT but that is false . Let me tell you dude my uncles had cars placed all over GT with armed men to counter attacks . One of them was forced to leave his job as hospital adminstrator of PHG and leave Guyana in haste as he was being targetted for intervening in such attacks with armed bodygaurds so .....I dont know where you get your facts from ...maybe you need to sit with your mamu Reep and if his memory is still working he will tell you about these cell vigilante groups and how they operated . |
