BBC man hit by gruesome flesh-eating bug
28/07/2008 A senior BBC producer has been struck down with one of the world's most gruesome flesh-eating bugs. Jonny Young, 39, was bitten on the arm by a fly while filming Lost Land of the Jaguar in tropical jungles. Three months later it grew into a deep weeping sore which doctors diagnosed as leishmaniasis. If it spreads, the carnivorous parasite can tunnel through flesh and organs before re-emerging through the face. Jonny has been treated with strong drugs and put on a drip - but his ordeal may not be over. The dad-of-two said: "It might not have been killed off. There's a risk it may one day burst out of my face." He picked up the bug in Guyana, South America. Jonny was treated at Southmead Hospital in Bristol. Leishmaniasis kills 70,000 people a year. Lost Land of the Jaguar is on BBC1 at 8pm on Wednesday. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2008/07/28/bbc...bug-115875-20674230/ |

The jungle is a place full of danger. Eco tourists are aware of that. If the pirai don't get you, the bushmaster might. And if you survive that, bandits are only a village or two away.... |

We have had flesh eating bugs in the USA. Clearly any one going into a humid climate needs to be very aware of the need to immediately treat any open wounds. |

There were no suggestion that in this case the victim was left with an open wound. A bit of careful reading and knowledge of the decease and how it is spread through the body would have saved you the embarrassment of making another ill informed comment. |

So I suggest you prance around the jungle with an open wound. Offer that advise as well. |

Once when I was in the jungle 3 jaguars attacked me but I fought them off and they had to run for their lives.
