.O. Fire sends gear to Guyana
By KWOK WONG, SUN MEDIA One man's old helmet and boots are another man's much needed fire-fighting gear. Toronto Fire is donating more than 300 pieces of used equipment to Guyanese firefighters to ensure fewer of the South American nation's firemen will fight blazes dressed in just shirts and pants. "I walked into their fire department and there was nothing there," said Ulric Anthony, 55, a city engineer who talked of a recent visit to the Guyana Fire Service. Anthony spearheaded the donation of helmets, fire coats, pants, and boots after spending $20,000 of his own money to help equip firemen in the land he left 32 years ago. "They try their best with their limited resources, but the help that we're getting from Canada is going to go a long way," said Terry Jervis, of the Guyana Ex-Police Association, who accepted the donation from Fire Chief William Stewart at City Hall yesterday. http://www.torontosun.com/News/TorontoAndGTA/2008/06/10/5826161-sun.html |
