Cranky Jagdeo exploded on Yesu Persaud, one of Guyana’s most successful businessmen, to the astonishment of many at the newspaper launching. Imagine Jagdeo berate Yesu that he was ignorant and don’t know Guyana tax laws. The dictatorial President was pissed because Yesu requested that similar tax breaks (give away) should also be offered to other businesses.

New business are usually offered certan incentives. The Newspaper will not see any profit until after about two/three years. Without these incentives it will fail..

It is also usual that old businesses would ask for tax breaks. Yesu Persaud just made a simple suggestion that other businesses should receive similar tax breaks like QAII. It was very disgraceful that Jagdeo went nuts on that suggestion by a prominent and successful businessman.

Can you imagine what would happen to a Cabinet Minister if he questions Jagdea at a Cabinet Meeting?

It is a financial issue, and we are supposed to have a finance minister. What is BJ doing speaking up on issues he knows nothing about or is not in charge of?
A voting public that cannot question their government is then under control of a dictatorship. The sad fact is that the majority of PPP voters are now worse off financially than when the PPP came to power.

Does Yesu persaud know the telephone # of the president, the address of the OP??? I am quite sure that the president would have made the time to listen to his views. Mr Persaud acted Unprofessionally and should have knownn better. The president was INVITED by the owners of the Media Company being launched.

Having said that, I have stated on mamy occasions that the entire Govt need to attend Public Speaking and Communications classes.

QAII are "good people" but The PREZ is handling this as though he is "hiding" something........he is trying to be "good" so he can get a "piece" of the action.

PS
PREZ this is not the same deal as with "BUDDY".

YESU is a Guyanese ICON.....PREZ you are not....at least not yet

Well the relevance has to do with proper protocol and Diplomatic norms. This event was a celebration of the launching of a Media Business and the president was invited as other guests. If Mr persaud has issues or questions about a Financial transaction he knows about the Min of Finance and the location of his Office. I am quite sure he also know the tel# and address of the president.

A sensible President would haver deferred the suggestion to the responsible person, or provided a "no comment" response. Instead he erupted like a volcano.

Nehru, aren't you nit-picking here about proper forum? If Presdent Bush is speaking at a graduation of West Point graduates and is asked about, say, war benefits, would he think that's not a proper forum? I believe that the President of any country can answer any question, anywhere, anytime, even if it's to say I'll get back to you on that. But to launch into personal attacks - that should not beg the question of proper forum.

Why? What is wrong with Yesu Persaud, a leading person in Guyana's business community askiung such a question. It may well be that its not he who needs the tax breaks but oethers who he knows.

If Guyana is a democracy any citizen has a right to ask the government what ever they chose to.

Yesu is not a foreign diplomat. As a citizen of Guyana he has a right to ask whatever question he choses to whenever he so desires......or is it that you were against PPP activists demonstrating against Burnham when he was on overseas missions?

Well you asked about relevance. So with regards to his handling of the question from Mr persaud, the president should have told him that " I am sorry Sir but you can direct that question to The Minister of finance Mr ashni Singh or call my office and make an appointment where we can discuss your concern If not, wait for my next Press conference. You are also welcome to attend a sitting of your parliament.

Yes that would have been an appropriate response. Behaving like a dictator angered at the temerity for a more mortal to ask him such a question is not.

However Yesu did have the right to ask the question, regardless as to what his motive smight have been.

The gist of Jagdeo's comment/explanation might be correct.

However, I feel that it was inappropriate for him to make the comment/statement at that time.

Perhaps, the best approach was for Jagdeo to not say anything at the function.

Were Jagdeo to be approached by any reporter, the most he should say was, perhaps --

1. I will provide comments at a later time; or

2. The Minister of xxxxxx, responsible for that area will respond at a later time.

Nehru,

You sometimes exhibit a little more intelligence than your PPP comrade, Rama, so here is a little help in understanding what this is all about.

YESU: Mr. President, in light of the tax concessions granted this new company, why haven't you extended this same benefit to other potential investors?

JADEO: You're ignorant of the tax laws! Blah! Blah! Blah! (Interpretation: I don't know what you're talking about! I'm a Soviet educated economist who got this job because Janet picked Ralph to be President and Moses objected, so Janet ended up settling for me as an alternative. I have no national vision! I have no national plan! I have no workable answers! I have no interest in Guyana, except what I can get out of it. So, for the last time; like you, I am ignorant of the tax laws, but am au fait with the laws that protect me against lawsuits and criminal charges!)

A President who wants to see his country's economy developed should not engage in this kind of vulgar behavior with a guy of Yesu's national and international business reputation. But as with most people who do not have material to formulate constructive answers, the President resorted to making the answer personal.

Yesu is a business maverick; not a political opponent! Jagdeo doesn't know the difference, and he doesn't care. Dictators usualy don't care!
