The Guyana Times, the nation’s latest daily publication, was last night launched amidst much fanfare in a crowded room at Le Meridien Pegasus.
But sparks flew after President Bharrat Jagdeo took on a leading businessman who suggested that the breaks extended to the newspaper’s principals who gained tax holidays for textile and pharmaceutical ventures should be granted to others. The total investment is around US$30M. Queens Atlantic Investment Inc (QAII) launched the publication together with a modern press capable of a number of applications. The first issue of the full-colour paper was previewed last night and officially comes out today. The sale price for the daily is $50 and it is not yet known what the thicker Sunday edition will cost the reader. The President launched a scathing attack on prominent businessman Yesu Persaud, Chairman of Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) for his suggestion that other local companies should be similarly considered for tax concessions so that the investment climate will be one that is attractive. A staff member of Queens Atlantic Investment Inc (QAII) last night displaying some of the items that have been printed at the company’s facilities at the former Sanata Textiles complex. This was during the launch of the Guyana Times and the state of the art printery at Le Meridien PegasusThere is room for a “serious†newspaper, Jagdeo said, one that can be critical, truthful, fair and sees public officers as fair game “but a paper that stays away from scurrilous attacks on people.†He said that for too long “we have feasted at that table.†“It is not enough to criticize the ills in society…I hope the newspaper recognises the good in the country,†he said, adding that the efforts of people should not be sacrificed on the altar of sensationalism. “I think people with a corporate interest will benefit from a country that is viewed in a positive light,†Jagdeo said. The President took Persaud to task on his comment about QAII being allowed tax concessions on the strength of negotiations and he said that this displayed an ignorance of the laws on Persaud’s part. “This is one of the things I hope this newspaper will correct. This is a profound ignorance of the Tax Act,†he said, explaining that the legislation provides for investors to benefit from tax concessions on the basis of investing in certain far-flung geographic locations, and in pioneering industries. He mentioned that when Persaud’s company was involved in medical transcription services, it benefited from tax concessions, “but this project failed.†“You are falling into the trap of ignorant people,†Jagdeo said. The President emphasised that the newspaper is not getting the benefit of duty- free concessions on its equipment and consumables. “The textile and anti-biotics [ventures] will get the tax holiday,†Jagdeo said. “I have asked Winston Brassington (Head of the Privatisation Unit) to hold a seminar on the tax laws,†Jagdeo said, stating that Persaud should be one of the persons attending. President Bharrat Jagdeo (centre) speaking with retired Major General Norman McLean (left) and other persons during the launch of the Guyana Times at Le Meridien Pegasus last night. Managing Editor of the Guyana Times, Avery Gomes said that the publication will feature a Page Six foundation for children who fall on hard times. He said that 60 per cent of the advertising revenue will go towards making the lives of these children better. He said that the rates of advertising for page six will be ten per cent higher than any other page. He said that the Foundation’s members and staff of the newspaper, among other people, will contribute to the funding for the Page Six Foundation. Chairman of the Board of Directors at QAII Ramroop Ramnarain said that the company recognised that there was need for a different publication. “This is why we made a conscious business decision to publish a new newspaper,†he said. QAII set up at the old Sanata Mill complex in a privatization deal that has attracted a lot of attention |

Yesu Persaud is a maverick businessman whose successful record stands like a tower over Jagdeo's unsuccessful record. Jagdeo cannot walk a mile in Yesu's mocassins.
And there is Chairman of the Board of QAII, Ramnarain, saying the company recognized there was need for a different publication. NEED? There are already three major dailies in a country of 700,000, of which less than a third read them all. Where is the NEED for another daily? They almost have the same news everyday. Almost the same headline everyday. Almost the same advertisements everyday. What Guyana really NEEDS is a NEW RADIO STATION that is independently owned and operated. I join the PNC, a rare show of support, in asking the President to bare before Parliament, the details of the new company's benefits and concessions. Jagdeo is running Guyana like the country and government belong to him to do whatever he wants and accounts to no one. |

Communicator, what kind of an ignorant ass are you?
If yesu persaud can prosper under jagdeo's watch, why can't other businessmen.. Don't compare oranges to grapes. Yesu is an an Indian and I am proud of him, but he is no where in jagdeo's shoes.. Think again before you speak.. |

If you blame the President for everthing, then he has alright to micromanage the economy. Some people needs help more than others and it is his responsibilities to provide help where it needed the most..

Dude, you are the ignorant ass! Jagdeo can't even tie Yesu's shoe lace. Yesu has been prospering long before Jagdeo got on the scene. For all you shallow minded forgetfull ungratefull PPP jackasses, it was Yesu Persaud who was one of the founders of the GUARD party that helped the PPP to get into government. I don't know why they don't get rid of Jagdeo and the PPP Gov't! They have made Guyana into a wasteland! You really need a brain transplant or you need to check into a alcohol rehab center. Jagdeo is one jackass of a president, the worst president in any country. He cannot stand to be criticized. When anyone opposes any of his stupidity he goes off on a verbal tirade like a big time auntie-man! |

Yesu is an Indian and all blacks like yourself should take a page out of his book.. However, Yesu is a merchant and he knows nothing about running a government. Do you? |

The Gov. Paper....

None of us here at GNI were at the meeting to launch this new daily publication so we have to rely on what is reported. Lets us not ever forget that most reporters in Guyana usually exercise a bias when reporting any major event. It is very unwise to believe and take to heart what is reported in the press these days. Journalists are deeply involved in a campaign of misinformation and this applies also to those who are pro-government. We must read what others have to say about the same reported matter and try hard to figure out the truth.
Yesu Persaud used this occasion to call on the president to give the same tax concessions to other daily newspapers. To tackle a Guyanese president in such a fashion at such an event is an indication that powerful and respected individuals in the private sector can freely voice their concerns. This type of freedom is wonderful. Jagdeo's response is ambiguous. I hope to read another version of the same event of what transpired. Hopefully, somebody would come up with a better report that give us a good view of what happened. |

From the responses I received, it tells me that Guyanese do not care about their country and how it is developed. All they are concerned about are their self satisfaction..
They built bridges, you are negative about it. They built roads, schools and buildings, you are not satistisfied. Almost everything which were done by the PPP, you all held a grudge.. What do you want? |

Why is everyone shocked about this, coming from this President.Once again he opens his mouth and proves to all what he is made of.The thing is all those so-called persons in the audience should have heckled him for those remarks.
Indeed, he does have a right to critize or question Yesu's remarks, however, not in that manner. This man has no frigging class. He should note that even Burnham when he disagreed with someone or a journalist did not reduce himself to such gutter behaviour. Burnham critized Jamaican journalist Tony Becca on the Robin Jackman affair, yet he at no time displayed that level of ignorance. He opposed Eugenia Charles and Eddie Seaga on the Grenada invasion yet he never displayed those actions. Jagdeo the nondescript has a lot to learn before he can attack Yesu Persaud in that manner. |

Billy, fortunately there are sources (e.g. blogs) other than newspaper that provide more accurate info on what's going on in Guyana. It looks like Guyana Times will be another Chronicle and GINA.

Yes Rama, he could even make a joke and say that "... maybe Yesu was drinking too much of his own product and confuses the issue." It is the tenor of his remarks Rama. |

I witnessed Burnham cussed out Indian Women lining up of food in the nastiest fashion you can imagined. In an interview about the Grenada invasion, Forbes angrily said that Guantanamo Bay is last holdings of imperialism. He even screamed at journalist who question about his failed socialist policies by saying "The coolie people wanted socialism". Ireton, you are trying to paint to good image of Burnham and very bad one of Jagdeo. Jagdeo may have overstepped his bounds and said something out of line but he is far better person than Burnham. |

Billy, Jagdeo is turning into Burnham right before our eyes. What I am saying is in a public arena even the devil Burnham showed some class.Remember even when he attacked the WPA and Dr Rodney when his PNC thugs chased Rodney and others from Bourda. Burnham joked he ran so fast ".. maybe he training for the olympics." There are others means available to attack or respond to one's critics, not like in a fish vendor mentality. |

Clearly, Jagdeo has NO class. He publicly berates anyone. This type of behavior is normal for him, dictatorial mentality.

So because he is a better person than Burnham, makes it ok for Jagdeo to do what he is doing? You people are something else. |

The actions of the President is what indo guyanese thinks. He speaks for dem.
If he doesn't, then let the indians put him in his place-tell him to shutup. A few months ago was Sharma. Now it Yesu Persaud. Before it was O'Lall. Yuh ppl seeing the pattern. Indians wakeup yuh fools-it is not alright for an indian dictator. |
