Bakewell joins foreign service
04/13/2008 Updated 04/11/2008 03:15:50 PM EDT Richard Aaron Bakewell, son of Edward and Rita Bakewell of Brownsville, was recently sworn in as a foreign service officer with the U.S. Department of State at a ceremony in the Ben Franklin Room in the state department's headquarters in Foggy Bottom, Washington, D.C. Bakewell received his presidential commission after taking a formal oath administered by Ambassador R. Nicholas Burns, Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs. Bakewell's first foreign assignment will be to the U.S. Embassy in Georgetown, Guyana, where he will serve one year as vice consul and one year as the mission's economic officer. A vice consul adjudicates applications and petitions from foreign nationals wishing to visit or immigrate to the U.S. An economic officer advises the ambassador on economic conditions affecting U.S. commercial interests, reports on those conditions to Washington and advises and reports on local economic development initiatives. Accompanying Bakewell will be his wife, Diana K. Corrigan, and their son, Aidan B. Bakewell. Before joining the foreign service, Bakewell worked as an analyst with the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) in Washington, D.C. He earned a dual masters degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, in public affairs and Eurasian area studies. He also served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Bulgaria. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) is known as "the investigative arm of Congress" and "the congressional watchdog." GAO supports the Congress in meeting its constitutional responsibilities and helps improve the performance and ensure the accountability of the federal government for the benefit of the American people.
GAO's work includes oversight of federal programs; insight into ways to make government more efficient, effective, ethical and equitable; and foresight of long-term trends and challenges. GAO's reports, testimonies, legal decisions and opinions make a difference for Congress and the Nation. http://www.gao.gov/ |
