Guyanese opposition leader’s bodyguard arrested
Thursday, 15 May 2008

The police in Guyana arrested the personal bodyguard of opposition leader Robert Corbin on Thursday.

Police said Cyrus Boyce was held for questioning in relation to a robbery.

The People's National Congress Reform (PNCR) said in a statement that Boyce was detained following a search of his home in East Coast Demerara around 2 o'clock Thursday morning.

He was then detained at the Albertown Police Station in the capital.

The release added that about 30 policemen cordoned off Boyce's house before carrying out the search and detaining him.

Thursday's move follows the arrest and detention of the personal chauffeur of the leader of the opposition, Mark McKenzie, on Wednesday in Georgetown.

McKenzie was arrested while driving a vehicle belonging to the leader of the opposition that was engaged in announcing the Cost-of-Living March scheduled for Thursday.

The opposition party said McKenzie was subsequently informed that he was arrested for using a noisy instrument without permission.

You really presumptious. It's not jagdeo who is having the police making arrests. It's the investigation that they conducted which lead them the Mr Corbin and his murderous followers..

As always, the police will eventually release the guy. This is the police's modus operandi: arrest/detain and then release.

Oliver Hinckson is going to be locked up until July or August, or the same amount of time as Sharma's license suspension. The government's aim is to use the time frame to reduce the chances of negative images during the Carifesta celebrations which end in August.

Like I said in my post above and has now been supported by today's Kaieteur News, here is something to chew on:

"Corbin’s bodyguard arrested for murder, robbery under arms"

“If there is evidence that I am in bed with criminals then they (police) should come and arrest me”
- Corbin.

Some time around 2:00hrs yesterday Cyrus Boyce, personal security detail (bodyguard) for the leader of the main opposition, Robert Corbin, was arrested for murder and robbery under arms.
Boyce was arrested at his Better Hope residence after some 30 heavily armed members of the Joint Services swooped down on the home, cordoned it off and ostensibly searched for arms and ammunition.
He was then taken to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters where he is assisting with investigations.
No one in the police force could say for which murder or for which robbery Boyce was being held. Earlier in the day, a senior rank had said that after the arrest the rank should have told Boyce for which incidents he was being held.
Recently, the police were detaining people and photographing them with tags that either suggested murder or robbery under arms. None has even been charged but they were all held for at least 36 hours. The most recent were some farm hands working on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway. They were photographed as people being held for murder. They have since been released. (Read more in today's KN).

I agree with enforcing the rule of law, but I have to agree with you. They sit on their asses knowing the backlands of Buxton was a terrorist hideout for several years. The terrorist are still at large being sheltered by the "kit and kin" in Buxton, Agrcola and Linden.

No need to. Scaring Indos by arresting black people (for making too much noise) so justifying their pre-election rcist underground rant that "black man coming to get you, vote PPP".

Now rather than arresting PNC officisls for committing the crimes that Jagdeo "knows" they did the best they can do is sedition, closing down a TV station and arresting some one for making too much noise.....in a year where maybe as many as 80 people, or more, might have been murdered year to date.

"Corbin’s guard released on bail"
SN, May 17, 2008
-quizzed on gangs, Waddell, whereabouts during massacres

Personal bodyguard to Opposition Leader Robert Corbin, Cyrus Boyce was released on $50,000 station bail yesterday and Corbin, in a letter to Acting Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene expressed concern over the man’s arrest, his interrogation and threats issued to him.

Only the PNCR has made public the man’s arrest and so far the police have not made any information public regarding the case. However this newspaper was informed by a source late yesterday that Cyrus was released on $50,000 bail. Corbin also confirmed the release.

In his letter to the Top Cop prior to the release, Corbin said Boyce was told that as of yesterday, ”The GDF interrogators will begin to ‘deal with him fully‘, both at CID Headquarters and elsewhere, as he has a long time to spend with them .”

Corbin told Greene that this latter threat coming after serious and credible allegations of torture of arrested persons by members of the Guyana Defence Force must arouse suspicions about the motive for the arrest and the future safety and welfare of Boyce.

Corbin, in the letter, also stated that he visited Boyce at the Alberttown Police Station on Thursday night and was advised that he was not yet questioned by the police about the offence he is alleged to have committed, neither was he given any details of that offence.

“Instead he had been questioned about, among other things, his friendship with (the late) Ronald Waddell and whether he has replaced him as controller of criminal gangs; his knowledge of arms and ammunition allegedly owned by the PNCR and their location; details of his daily activities as personal security of the Leader of the PNCR and their location…,” the letter stated.

According to Corbin, Boyce was also questioned about his whereabouts during the Lusignan and Bartica massacres.

He further told the commissioner that he was bringing the matter to his attention since he was concerned that if someone was arrested they ought to have been provided with the details of the offence which they have allegedly committed.

He also told Greene that he held him and the Police Force accountable for the man’s safety and protection and to ensure too that he is not tortured and that due process is followed in accordance with the laws of Guyana.

Boyce, the PNCR had said, was picked up by joint services ranks following the cordoning off of his Better Hope, East Coast Demerara home at 2 am on Thursday. The statement also said that the man’s house was searched by eight ranks, allegedly for arms and ammunition but nothing was found.

The statement added that Boyce’s home was cordoned off by some 30 fully armed ranks and then he was invited to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters to aid the police in an investigation. It said that Boyce queried the reason for the invitation and indicated that if he was being invited to CID he would willingly report there at 8 am on Thursday. It added that Boyce was further informed that he was being arrested and the officer carrying out the arrest indicated that it was for robbery under arms.

Legal counsel for Boyce, the statement said, enquired later that day for the reason for the detention and was told by an officer at CID that he was arrested for murder and robbery under arms.

This incident comes closely on the heels of the arrest of the opposition leader’s chauffeur on Wednesday. He was arrested for using a loud speaker to drive around the city to announce the cost-of-living march. He was reportedly told by police that his arrest was for using a noisy instrument without permission. The man was later released on $5,000 bail.
