The theme: "Strengthen the Party: Secure the nation; accelerate development," is nine years late.
After watching Jagdeo hijack the government from the PPP between 1999 and present, and make a mess of the country, the PPP really needs to regroup and strengthen itself by visiting with grassroot supporters who are disenchanted and disillusioned with the party's handling of the government on Jagdeo's failure to fast-track the economy and handle the internal security situation. Notice there are only three speakers: 1. Bharrat Jagdeo 2. Janet Jagan 3. Donald Ramotar This means that the party is still being run by Mrs. Jagan despite her attempt to establish a 'collective leadership system' to replace the lone leadership role her late husband played. The PPP is being led by a white American born Jew whose irrevocable commitment to communism is adversely impacting the PPP's ability to convert its election wins into plusses on accelerated economic recovery and development and an effective internal security strategy. She left America to help chase out the white colonialists and now she is the new white colonialist who needs to be chased out. Let Guyanese-born Guyanese run their affairs. GO HOME, WOMAN! Communism is not for Guyana. It has not worked and will not work! Get over it! Under Janet, all the party is interested in is beating the PNC at the polls, after that its main focus is to hold on to power. Screw the people; but especially the party's support base. They can keep dying at the hands of demented criminals, just as long as it is not the PPP leaders who are dying. The party has to take note that a vast number of Indians stayed on last elections. Something is wrong with the party! Notice the first part of the theme? STRENGTHEN THE PARTY! The party is first at all times. Is this the road to paramountcy? Second part of the theme is: SECURE THE NATION! Against whom? Venezuela or criminals? How we doing so far on this count? And the third part of the theme is: ACCELERATE DEVELOPMENT! Now, tell me if the PPP manifesto of 1992, 1997, 2001 and 2006 did not cater to this particular area? So what happened over the past sixteen years with 'accelerated development'? LOANS and GRANTS, BARRELS and REMITTANCES, DRUG SMUGGLING and MONEY LAUNDERING. 60 percent of the informal economy makes of the formal economy. What accelerated development? |

PPP CONGRESS - A MOMENTOUS OCCASION
By Hydar Ally THE People’s Progressive Party (PPP) will be holding its 29th Party Congress on August 2-3, 2008 at the New Diamond Secondary School, East Bank Demerara. The theme of the Congress is “Strengthen the Party; Defend the Nation; Accelerate Developmentâ€. This Congress is very significant, not only for Party members, but for the country as a whole. As the governing party and the oldest and largest political party in the country, whatever transpires and whatever decisions are taken can have far reaching implications, not only for membership, but for the country as a whole. Why is Congress of such importance? This is so because of four main reasons. Firstly, as the highest decision-making forum of the Party, it has the power to review, amend or endorse the Constitution and Programme of the Party if considered necessary by delegates who are drawn from Party Groups throughout the length and breadth of the country. Only Congress has the power to make any changes to the Party’s Programme or Constitution, since such powers cannot be delegated to any of the lower bodies, including the Central Committee, which is the next highest decision-making body after Congress. Secondly, it is at Congress that the general policy and tactics of the Party are determined. Members are given the opportunity to make their inputs to policy formulation and on other tactical/strategic issues. Such interventions can be made directly at plenary or at workshop sessions, or by way of Resolutions or Motions which Groups are free to submit for consideration by Congress. Thirdly, Congress reviewed the performance of the Party from the time of the last Congress to determine the extent to which decisions taken were implemented. In this regard, the Party is held accountable to the membership, which speaks to the highly democratic nature of the Party. One major highlight is the Central Committee Report which is presented by the Party’s General Secretary. It is this Report that sets the tone and forms the basis for discussions at both the plenary sessions and at workshops even though delegates are free to raise any issue that is of interest and concern to them. Another important function of the congress is to elect members of the Central Committee of the Party, which is the second highest decision-making forum of the Party after Congress. Since Congress meets once every three years, it is the Central Committee that provides the leadership and guidance to the Party during the course of the three years, of course within the broad framework of the policy guidelines taken by Congress. This is why members of the Party look forward so eagerly to Congress, since it provides them with a forum to, as it were, have their say and thereby be in a position to influence the course and direction of the national politics from a party perspective. This is usually done by way of Motions and Resolutions, which, if carried, become mandatory for the Party to implement. Congress also provides the membership with an opportunity to interface with each other and with the leadership of the Party in a way not otherwise possible. Delegates and Observers from all parts of the country converge for two full days on the Congress venue, thereby enabling them to socialize and renew camaraderie and friendship. This Congress, from all indications, promises to be the largest of all Congresses of the Party. The trend has been for each successive Congress to be bigger in numerical terms, which speaks of the growth and development of the Party both from a quantitative and qualitative perspective. This is why the theme of this year’s Congress specifically targets the further strengthening of the Party, both organizationally and qualitatively, in order to provide it with the requisite capacity to carry out its function as the premier political organization in the country. The PPP, to its credit, has played a major and decisive role in the politics of this country ever since its formation in January 1, 1950. It has been in the forefront in the struggle for universal adult suffrage, or the right to vote; for constitutional changes allowing for the current ministerial system of government; for national and political independence; for the restoration of political democracy after it was stolen by the former PNC administration, and by no means least, as the Party that was and continues to be instrumental in the economic, social and cultural advancement of the Guyanese people. This is why attempts to denigrate and cast aspersions on the Party and its leadership by detractors and opposition elements have failed to diminish the Party as the most respected and popular Party in the country. This is due largely to the fact that the Party has never departed from its core principles and values, and has always remained faithful to the vision of its late leader Dr. Cheddi Jagan, which continues to guide and permeate the thinking of the Party and its entire membership. Its commitment and loyalty to the people of this country, in particular the working people, remain irreversible. This Congress, like all previous Congresses, has already generated much public interest. This is indicative of the great importance attached to PPP Congresses to politics of the country chronicle |

President acted in accordance with traditions
I write to strongly support President Jagdeo in his defence of the dignity and honour of the Presidency of the Republic of Guyana by revoking the OP press credentials of Mr. Gordon Moseley, Guyana’s premiere pseudo journalist. By acting to distance the Office of the President from those whose conduct would pollute its atmosphere of decorum and statesmanship, President Jagdeo has acted in accordance with the finest customs and traditions of Western liberal democracy. What kind of a holder of this, the highest office in the land, would President Jagdeo be if he had permitted Mr. Moseley’s abuses and degradations to go forth with impugnity? Our Presidency is not merely another political office of the State. It is the inner sanctum of our temple to democracy, the embodiment of that which is best of the Guyanese people, our young nation’s hopes, dreams, and ultimately the guiding hand of its destiny. This is what Mr. Moseley has attacked. He has not and continues to not limit himself to critiques of government policy and analysis of the same so as to contribute usefully to the public debate on the issues of the day, as all bona fide journalists do daily across the globe. Instead, he takes it upon himself to launch unwarranted and unjustified attacks upon the institution of the Presidency itself. If Mr. Moseley wishes to continue to enthrall his audience (all five persons) with untruths and old fashioned nancy stories, then by all means he can do so from a safe distance from the Presidency, our Republic’s constitutional and moral centre. He does not need to be in the environment that is the object of his bilious ridicule. I am not an attorney by training, however, contrary to the public protestations of Mr. Moseley I am not aware that not receiving a standing invitation to State House is a violation of the entrenched fundamental rights of a citizen of Guyana or of the press. However, if the learned journalist Mr. Moseley feels he has a case of substance then he may feel free to seek redress all the way to the Caribbean Court of Justice, another of President Jagdeo’s achievements for Guyana. Otherwise, on behalf of the public too preoccupied with earning a living and developing Guyana to waste time on intellectual lilliputians, I ask Mr. Moseley to return to his day job after his fifteen minutes of newfound “fame†is up. Finally, I thank you, Sir, for this opportunity to articulate the position of the majority segment of the population who understand what this matter is truly about and wish to register their unqualified support for the strong actions taken by President Jagdeo in defence of the high office to which he has been duly elected to by us, the people of this land.
