Associated Press - September 25, 2008 10:03 AM ET

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) - A Canadian company says it will open a large mine in western Guyana after discovering vast gold deposits.

Guyana Goldfields Inc. says it found reserves of 2.5 million troy ounces (78 million grams) and expects the mine to be profitable for 12 years. Guyana is among the world's top 30 gold producers and officials say the mine will be among the 10 largest in South America.

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds said Thursday the discovery boosts a thriving mining industry. Miners last year produced a record 246,000 troy ounces (7.7 million grams) of gold, up 30% from the previous year.

Gold is 1 of Guyana's top exports.

How much money did Omai bring into the treasury from the gold it found and exported?

Will Norman McLean be working at this new company?

As for Omai, this company did bring wealth to Guyana as well as pain to the Amerindians and fishes. Omai bolstered the tax rolls to fund employment of PNC bandits in the GDF, GPF and public sector. Many businesses got piece of the pie by providing the company with supplies for its operations. The workers employed by Omai also benefited. I don't know if the benefits outweighted the destruction but remember it was Hoyte who brought in Omai initally.

I can't expect better from people who only see "supply" as bottle water. Many Guyanese businesses supplied vital mechanical parts, industrial supplies as so forth, this I know personally.

OMAI raped guyana - any ideas how much royalty we got fro them?
Employees in the fields can rave about the treatment they got from OMAI, but at the end of the day, they were treated as they were supposed to be treated. They were used to being kicked around by Guysuco, Guymine etc, so this was a nice change.

But for qualified Guyanese, OMAI had no respect for guyanese qualification - they pulled an arbitrary number out of the hat and it becomes your salary. I would not be surprised to know that many bars of gold were taken out of guyana 'backtrack'. Guyana is probably on its way to being another Rhodesia - rape our resources and leave.
