Jagdeo Initiative Critical To Stemming Regional Food Crisis

July 5, 2008

July 02-08 - As Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Leaders including President Bharrat Jagdeo continue discussions in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda on a number of issues at the 29th CARICOM Heads of Government summit ongoing on the island, Organisation of American States (OAS) Secretary-General Jose Miguel Insulza underscored that the Jagdeo Initiative on Agriculture is critical to stemming the gravity of the region’s food crisis.

The Jagdeo Initiative on Agriculture was initiated by President Bharrat Jagdeo as lead Head for Agriculture in the Region. It is a strategic policy framework that sets the agenda for repositioning of agriculture in the region by identifying 10 key binding constraints that must be addressed as the region embarks on the process of increasing food security and food sovereignty.

Insulza said he is prepared to work with organizations within the framework of the OAS to seek solutions, ensure food security, alleviate the situation in the short-term and improve the conditions of agriculture production in the region.

The Secretary-General argued that the problem the region faces is not really that of food supply or food shortage but that of demand, noting that people in the region simply do not have the money to pay for food and keep up with the rate of the price increases.

With this view, Insulza is calling on the region to find ways to improve the demand capacity of its people.

The Secretary General told reporters this following a breakfast meeting with the Heads where he said the most salient issue discussed was the rising food prices being experienced by the region.

It is expected that the OAS Permanent Council will be meeting and the Regional Agricultural Investment Forum held in Guyana on June 6 and 7 is also expected to be high on the agenda.

The forum held in Guyana in June came under the umbrella of the initiative and sought to bring investors, bankers and others in the agriculture sector on board. It also served as a networking forum for the stakeholders where an investment atmosphere in the region would be created and participants would examine investment opportunities in the region.

What is there to be fair about? I have been around since 1958 and for the better part of thge last 35 years I have been hearing that Guyana is the bread basket of the Caribbean.

Then we ran out of bread and went to the Caribbean with baskets begging for bread.

Now we have no bread and no baskets to help feed the Caribbean because many of us are already living all over the Caribbean, and the Caribbean is importing bread (food) from other countries outside the Caribbean. (Remember Jamaica recently?)

The PPP came back into power in 1992 with no major vision for agriculture, even though its support base is mainly agro-oriented. Jagdeo, the Plan B candidate of 1997, is more interested in facilitating an informal economy of drugs, money laundering, remittances and loans and grants, and calling it progress. That Soviet mentality was evident right up until the USSR collapsed from failed economic policies.

Despite all the difficulties, Guyana is the hope of the Caribbean where food is concerned. And yes they could also borrow a page from the democratic way our elections are conducted.

Alex,

I like the way you quickly transitioned from Guyana being the bread basket of the Caribbean to being the hope of the Caribbean where food is concerned. At least you seem to get your own drift.

Hard working Guyanese will do that under adverse conditions caused the Jagdeo government are the ones who will do it. Jagdeo is good at begging rather than bootstrapping any thing.

Guyana will be offering free food to the islands I see. had to be if we are doing so great a favor.

Nothing to do with an opportunity that will grow Guyana's economy and hopefully create employment from agriculture and agro industries using Trinidad capital.

Nehru the Dominican Republic is already laughing at the notion of Guyana being the bread basket. They say Guyana MIGHT grow more food. They already are, and cheaper than guyana.

So better get rid of your Indo racist arrogant attitude or those Dominicans (Republic) will clean off your plate. And I dont mean by eating your food. I measn by depriving you of a market for Guyana food exports.

You remind me of a lunatic brain washed by the YSM.....oops PYO, so similar are these entities that one cant tell the difference.

Rama if Jagdeo is a fraud who is destroying Guyana then its an act of a patriot to say so. Now I know that Burnham taught the PPP to think that any one who doesnt swallow govt propaganda is anti govt and therefore a traitor. But this isnt the case. The PPP studiously has kept Burnham;s constitution, and with it his dictatorial mentality.

Now while Jagdeo curses out Antiguans (after thanking them for taking care of Guyanese who fled there to avoid starvation in Guyana) the DR is busy making sure they snatch every bit of market share in Caricom. The market share that Guyana ought to have.
