Jewish code snarls probe into Crown Heights attack

Long before the first rapper stopped snitching or any Mafiosi swore an oath of omertà, there was the Jewish law of mesira.

The tenet that forbids Jews from informing on fellow Jews is one of the hurdles facing Brooklyn prosecutors probing the April 14 attack on a black man by two Jewish men, sources told the Daily News.

Authorities - invoking a complaint long cited in cases involving rappers - said the initial probe was hindered by the local Hasidim's refusal to cooperate.

One source suggested the Orthodox community was taking a page from the rap world's "stop snitching" handbook. But it was actually lifted directly from the Code of Jewish Law.

"The Hebrew word is mesira, which means basically you are not allowed to be an informant," said Rabbi Shea Hecht, a well-known figure in Crown Heights.

"In essence, I am not allowed to snitch, period."

The attack in Crown Heights led Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes to empanel an investigative grand jury to try to shake loose reluctant witnesses. It's the same technique prosecutors tried unsuccessfully in the slaying of rapper Busta Rhymes' bodyguard in 2006.

Rhymes and about 50 other witnesses refused to cooperate with cops. Their decision was based on street cred. The slaying remains unsolved.

When college student Andrew Charles was attacked in Crown Heights by two men wearing yarmulkes last month, police quickly identified a suspect - the driver of the getaway SUV.

Menachem Ezagui came to the 71st Precinct stationhouse with a lawyer after the vehicle was discovered. Police sources said he refused to answer any questions.

Charles, 20, the son of a city cop, was walking on Albany Ave. when a bicycle-riding assailant sprayed him with Mace. The SUV then pulled up, with a second man jumping out to smash the college sophomore twice with a nightstick, police said.

Cops have made no arrests. A lawyer sought to broker a deal that would have led two Jewish suspects to surrender on reduced charges. Sources said the district attorney's office rejected the deal, insisting the attack was too severe.

According to Hecht, mesira is not an all-encompassing concept - common sense supersedes the law, as does the responsibility of preventing injury to others. "You're not allowed to stand on the blood of your brother," he said.

That comes with a loophole, too. If Jews are convinced that one of their own will not get a fair shake from authorities, they have no obligation to cooperate.

"There are double standards - sometimes they work to your advantage," Hecht said. "To think there's no political element to justice in America would be foolish

In the wake of the Sean Bell verdict, I don't think this is a wise move by the Jews. I was around in Brooklyn when a Jewish driver recklessly killed the son of a Guyanese family (the Catos of Linden), and because the obviously uninjured driver was taken away in a Jewish ambulance - leaving the scene of an accident before the police got there - this set off a racial firestorm that resulted in a Trinidadian youth stabbing to death a Jewish youth from Australia.

That incident, by the way, lasted for days, polarized the city with blacks against Jews, and literally ended David Dinkin's chance for a second term as mayor.

The leaders of the black and Jewish communities in Crown Heights have to step in and stave off a repeat of those dark days.

Dude the hasidm community in bklyn have increased tours of service by the youth in the isreali army training camps , these kids have become more aggressive since then . I see them playing some serious basket ball , very rough and tough and many of the games end up with serious injuries ,it's like you aint playing good if you aint bleeding and while they playing these games the jewish rappers and reggae singers music is being played loud in hebrew . I dot know the language but from the beat tone and how the players play one can only assume the lyrics are brainwashing . It's a new phenomenon . They have camps upstate where they excel in paramilitary style and I have noted they now take over the war games venues in upstate and vermont .

Yo are such a racist pig. Leaving the young man in the streets caused the riots. The act of taking one over the other was a deliberate choice based on race. That much has been borne out in subsequent independent investigations. It is a view of medieval christianity that has been repudiated by the old pope and just about every christian leader. If you operate out of christianity, know that Jesus never spoke of collective blame on any nation or people...but rather of the assumption of collective innocence. WHich is why all abrahamic religons accept the story of abrham's "discussion" with God regarding the destruction of Sodom. Just a word. I will not comment further.

I have seen these same fellas book the battlefields upstate and vermont for war games sometimes the venues have a 6 month backlog . I noted this kind of activity only became more pronounced over the past 12 years . Last college break dem bais had 15 buses loaded with guys on the 87 and dem bais had hi tech equipment like night vision satellite locators etc . Look I admire these people levels of organization and proactiveness , I always admired their military skills which is the best in the world .

Kid, I'm not disputing that, I know many of the young people, male and female are undergoing some tough training, I've seen that look in their faces when I pass them in the streets. It's the music I'm debating. Is it something in the lyrics? There is not much that separates those cousins, Jews and Muslims.

Jesus was an orthodox Jew. Also, when something happens to someone in their society it is usually their own "doing" it to them. It does not mean "they" ( Jews) hang him on a cross. The Pharisees did, one branch on the theological tree from which contemporary Judaism emerged.. Furthermore, Christ said he came for Jews and Gentiles. The nomenclature given those believing in him, ie "Christians", artificially creates a divide among the "lost" sheep.

the Old Testament Covenant has been abrogated. The Jews of today will only be saved if they believe on Jesus. If they do not, they are practicing fruitlessness and futility just like all the other pagan religions of the world i.e islam, hinduism, shintoism, buddhism, socialism, atheism etc.

that being said, for any society to function today, they must all agree to follow the very Christian tenet they reject "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you".

Dude you write some stupid sh*t sometimes. Please tell me how you know this, otherwise I'll think you're simply making stuff up or are assuming things. Maybe your assumptions are like the ones you made about how Kerik would have been a great crime fighter in Guyana because he had a black belt in Karate. I'm just poking fun at you dude. Everyone knows that great crime fighting by leaders can only be accomplished through the creation, implementation and execution of POLICIES.

Dude, from my experience and observations within the various Hasidic enslaves throughout NYC, I have found that they are very "buffy". A police term we use to describe people who really, really like police paraphernalia and police related authority.
