Attorney Gomattie Singh doused with acid
Published May 29, 2008 stabroeknews Gomattie SinghAttorney-at-law Gomattie Singh is in hospital after a lone assailant threw acid in her face as she sat in her vehicle outside the Guyoil gas station on Sheriff Street yesterday afternoon. Singh, a resident of Prashad Nagar, is in a city hospital nursing serious burns to her face. The attacker arrived in a taxi and fled in the same manner seconds after dousing Singh who is said to be in her fifties. The assailant made no effort to conceal his face or the vehicle’s number plate, this newspaper understands. This bizarre incident has sent shock waves throughout the legal fraternity. Several of her colleagues last evening called for justice and urged the police to act swiftly to catch the perpetrators. Reports reaching Stabroek News are that the incident occurred as the attorney was speaking to someone standing outside her RAV 4 vehicle just after 4 pm. An eyewitness recounted to this newspaper that Singh, her husband and grandson were in the vehicle which was parked outside the gas station. Singh had her window down and was speaking at the time when a light blue car bearing an HB number plate stopped a short distance away. The eyewitness recalled that a young man got out of the vehicle and started heading towards her. He had a black bag in his hand and as he neared Singh, the man pulled out a bottle with an orange liquid and threw it into the woman’s face. The eyewitness told Stabroek News that following the incident, the woman was placed in another vehicle and rushed to the hospital. The seat that Singh was sitting in was burnt badly and her glasses were lying there too, the witness said. The information this newspaper received is that the man calmly returned to the car that he arrived in and it sped off. Singh’s husband Krishna and grandson were not injured. Contacted last evening Chairman of the AFC, Khemraj Ramjattan expressed deep shock at the attack. Ramjattan said that from all accounts the attacker threw the corrosive substance straight into her face. Singh operated out of Ramjattan’s chambers and it was from there that she went on to complete her law studies. |

I am wondering what is the motive behind this horrible crime. Could it be the work of a disgruntled client of her? Could it be political??

Don't be silly. Didn't she embarrassed the AFC and accused Trotman of being a racist? |

The PNC never targets ranking members of opposite political forces, especially colleagues of the Combined Opposition. That makes no sense. This was an obvious violent PPP attack on the opposition. |

What he is trying to tell you is that unlike the Sawh killing, this crime was perpetrated against a prominent member of the opposition, and therefore it is more apt to speculate it was the work of the gov't. |

The level of incompetence of this police force bother me to no end. This is a brazen open air attack and in any other reality there would be a variety of suspects already tracked down and brought in for questioning.

If something is not done about this crime situation we will see more bold and daring operations. This latest incident is a case in point.

Doubt that this is a politically motivated crime. The PPP has nothing to gain and it is not their modus operandi. This appears to be vindictive and personal act.
Let's pray that she will recover without serious harm. The Guyoil CCTV cameras may have captured this cowardly and heinous act. It is very common crime in GY - perpetuated especially against women. |

With dysfunctional leadership why are you surprised that a dysfunctional culture prevails across the entire nation? The justice system DOES NOT function. |

It appears as if staying out of trouble even brings on trouble. Today Ms. Singh and yesterday was that gold miner. Man, does anyone in authority worry about all that is going on down there. I have always had the opinion that after the British left, there wasn'any just authority remaining in the multi racial society. THose who have the power to initiate changes as the occassion needs it, just have a doan care attitude. |

Do you think it is because of dysfunctional leadership in the White House there is such a high murder rate around the US Capital??? |

Does the term LEADERSHIP, to you, encompass only the President or all those in positions of authority?
Ethical conduct in GY is absent because of rapidly declining morals and values. When those holding public offices consistently demonstrate unethical behavior this conduct eventually cascades down to all levels of society. Now go ahead find another excuse .... |

DC does not have the kind of crime rate Guyana has. we have around 12 per 100,000 per annum. Guyana is already running many times that for this year already. One has to call the government into question. In the district, it is the Mayor who is always in the hot seat and has to be proactive in crime fighting. This city has a around a an 80% success in solving its homicide. In Guyana the reverse is more likely true |

This is a sad affair indeed, but lets not start casting blame before we know the facts. This does not seem political to me. Why would the PPP or the PNC for that matter, want to disfiger this lady? This looks more like a disgruntled client exacting revenge. Now, one cannot blame the police for the accurance of a crime such as this. But one would have every right to fault them in their failure to solve the crime.

Since the man did not hide, neither did he hide the plate number of the hire car, he is known.
Surprised that there is no arrest yet. |

I second that. And since the car from which he emerged and then made his escape from is known. I would expect a quick resolution to this case. |

His flippant attitude regarding his identification may point to the fact that the car was stolen. In any case this has been going on for far too long without resolution. The Guyanese government needs to stop making excuses and get the job done. The people deserve better. |

agree the people deserve better but then if the people do not care enough to demand and CAUSE change why would the govt do anything more than they need to do .
Crime will become worse and guess what , Indians will continue to vote PPP and majority blacks the PNC. rather than rock the boat or rat out the criminals and politicians , the people are looking for a way to get out of Guyana because they have no faith nor trust in the political leadership . Thats the bottomline ! |
