Dis question always puzzled me. Burnham liked riding his horse. He was friendly to the Luckhoos who managed the races. ?????

The PPP never "tek way" Toolsie's land. Burnham gave him that land in 1970 for his support. It was an illegal gift. |

Who owned the land prior to 1970? Poor people? The state? |

It was state property used originally by vendors in the Water Street area. |

So how is that different from the preference given to a few investors today by the Jagdeo Administration? |

Burnham did not ban horse racing. True, D'Urban Park race course was closed down, but horse racing continued at various locations, e.g., Bush Lot (West Berbice) and Bush Lot (Corentyne), etc.

The basic difference is Burnham took land that was used by mostly Indian vendors and gave such land to Toolsie a rich Indian in return for his support. Burnham went on to collect a lot of financial favors from Toolsie. Whereas the present government is giving land to business persons/groups to operate businesses. There are allegations that some of these deals might not be above board. |

Did you read Christopher Ram's essay on how taxpayer dollars are given to a handful of friends. Blacks, Indians, Portuguese, Amerindians all pay taxes right? |

Did Toolsie Persaud pay for the land or was it given to him? |

There was some talk about building a sports complex (including a cycling velodrome) at D'Urban Park after horse racing was stopped. I remember going to the races as a youngster with my dad. King's Bounty was the big horse with jockey Molai aboard. The horse that ran off the track and up the street was Masquerade. Every time he ran by St. Sidwell's church, he used to see jumbie in the church cemetary and run off de track and up de road. |

My elder brother was a keen fan of horse racing -- I have heard similar stories from him about the horses. King's Bounty and High Flyer comes to mind.
I believe that the Luckhoos were announcres ... perhaps Lloyd and Lionel. |

I can't recall Toolsie Persaud ever paying for that land...also Sankar was given land by Burnham at Blairmount in exchange for political and financial support........the farmers there were having problems getting fertilizers and drainage so they stopped farming and the land was taken from them and given to Kayman Sankar....this injustice was corrected by Dr.Jagan after he became president..... |

Should the PPP lose power, a lot of similar corrections would have to be made. |
