After sanctions for breaching forestry regulations
oolsie Persaud Limited has closed its forestry and sawmilling operations, sending home 300 workers. The company announced the indefinite closure in a notice in the press, yesterday. This comes in the wake of the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) sanctioning the company for breaches of forestry regulations. The company had obtained a court order restraining the GFC from acting on a cease work order placed on Toolsie Persaud Limited, after forestry breaches were discovered. In April this year, the Ministry of Agriculture said an audit in the latter part of 2007 revealed that the company was guilty of harvesting in at least 27 blocks for which complete inventory information were not submitted to nor approved by the GFC. The company was also said to have breached the guidelines by harvesting in two blocks which were not stated in Annual Operation Plan for 2007. The notice in the press said: “It is very much regretted that due to circumstances beyond our control, TPL Georgetown Sawmill and Manaka Logging Concession [have] been forced to shut down operations with immediate effect, until further notice.” The company also said that a further announcement will be made “as soon as we are in a position to resume operations. ” Managing Director of Toolsie Persaud Limited, David Persaud, said that the company is operating on a skeleton staff, since many of them had to be laid off. He said that although the company’s sawmill is not forbidden to operate, it cannot do so in the absence of raw material – logs. He said that the company has completed a 100 percent inventory and was awaiting verification of this from the GFC. An appeal filed by the GFC seeking to overturn the decision that had been made in favour of Toolsie Persaud Limited is to be heard in the High Court today, company officials said. The company said too that it is awaiting inspectors from the GFC to inspect blocks in order to verify the company’s 100 percent inventory. However, they stated that the GFC might drag their feet to perform the inspection in the event that the GFC gets a favourable decision in the courts today. The company through a court order in April had blocked the GFC from enforcing a stop order on its Timber Sales Agreement (TSA), and from collecting a fine of over $80M for breaches in harvesting regulations. According to new regulations, the Annual Operation Plan must contain the number of 100-hectare harvesting blocks to be harvested, accompanied by 100 percent inventory information for all the commercial species to be harvested from these blocks. The GFC will give approval for harvesting after it would have conducted field checks to confirm the accuracy of the inventory. The efforts of this newspaper to get a comment from Commissioner of Forests, James Singh, proved futile. (Johann Earle) |

It's obvious that the PPP govt is hassling TPL because of TPL's past support of the PNC. Jagdeo is a wicked and vindictive man. Ask Varshnie.

Toolsie Persaud also quietly made donations to the PPP when King Kong was in power. |

Some Indian business continued to give to the PPP even when the PPP abandoned the struggle for decades with the hope the PPP would somehow by osmosis get back into office . In the late 80's and 90's when it was evident Guyana might finally have a free and fair election Indian businesses from Canada to Suriname Including Trinidad , gave the PPP more funds than they needed and rightly so . But the fact remains when Burnham was in power every Indian business had to give Burnham money or he would have made business impossible for them . Now if people want to call that aski55ing then let them , i know a lot of Indians who were employed by the civil service , most of which were PPPites had to give back part of their salaries during the period of austerity so these critics are talking shyte about who kiss a55 , they only found a voice and what appears to be courage to speak up and out in 1992 prior to that these pu55ies were hiding under their beds including Ramacvnt . |

That's one thing I didn't do! Hide under the bed. In 1964, when I were kicking butts on the east Coast, where were you?
When the Indian Girls were being rape in the NS, where were you? During the Burnham days, I was a civil servant and at the same time a political activist for the PPP.. What were you doing?? |

If that is true, then Jagdeo might want his share from the business people who is the back bone of Guyana's economy. Is he going to call Toolsie Persaud stupid like he does to other business people? |

No! I will! When The PPP won the Election 1992, Toolsie Persaud sent $2 million to the PPP. Cheddi sent back the money to Toolsie with a note sying, This government is not for sale'. |
