Muslim women in America should count their blessings, just look at what the courts ruled in Turkey...NO HEADSCRAVES IN PUBLIC BUILDINGS.

...and public schools are now making a special effort to heighten awareness of Islamic practices. I know of one particular school district that sent out memos during the month of Ramadan informing administrators and teachers of the customs of Muslim children who fast at that time. Some public school teachers also incorporated lessons on Ramadan in their social studies curriculum. |

Chief: what is happening in turkey is going to backfire. The will of the people is being suppressed. Those who want headscarves are being called "islamist'. What a horrible label for those who wish to express their spirituality in this manner!!
One may be against the headscarf...and in honesty, I am one of those, depending on the society we are talking about. but it often serves more than just a sartorial purpose or more than expresses piety...it serves a political agenda. And in this, the turkish opposition is trying to negate the values of the people. It is a paradox. if you are secular, then religious symbolism on the part of others should be meaningless to you. It failed in france, and it will fail in turkey. They will just create martyrs. For one of the few times in my battles, I find myself supporting the hijabis. |

With democratic principles and values, too. Turkey, as a muslim nation is a pace-setter for strong religious belief, democracy and freedom. Many Muslim nations should follow suit. |
