Minister of Agriculture Satyadeow Sawh was assassinated along with a sister, Julie and a brother, Raj Sawh, and security guard at around one o'clock this morning at his home in La Bonne Intention (LBI) East Coast Demerara.

Reports reaching Kaieteur News state that Sawh and other relatives were on their veranda when seven men, who were dressed in black clothing, invaded the premises, three of the gunmen entered the home and riddled them with bullets.

They were reportedly killed instantly. It is also believed that a fifth person, said to be a security guard from a nearby premises, was also killed.

Kaieteur News understands that Sawh's wife, a son and one of the Minister's brothers who was on vacation from Canada, managed to escape unhurt.

According to reports, Minister Sawh and other relatives had attended a function at the Le Meridien, Pegasus last night and were seen at the poolside.

According to eyewitnesses, the Minister and relatives left minutes after midnight. The band, in their last song, wished the Minister and the group the very best.

Minister Sawh was Ambassador to Venezuela before being appointed Minister of Agriculture.

Meanwhile, in the wake of the assassination, President Bharrat Jagdeo has called an emergency meeting with the top brass of the security forces.

MINISTER SAWH’S ASSASSINATION MIGHT BE AN ATTEMPT
TO FOMENT HATRED AND VIOLENCE

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is deeply saddened and distraught at the assassination of Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Satyadeow Sawh, MP who was also a member of the Central Committee of the party and two of his relatives and security and personnel and injury to three others at his home in Earl’s Court, LBI, East Coast of Demerara this morning (April 22, 2006).

Preliminary indication is that the primary motive was to kill the Minister and members of his family. That there was no resistance from the Minister and others showed the merciless and demonic behaviour of the armed gang which came and left on foot heading into the backlands.

The Minister was a distinguished son of Guyana’s soil who made sterling contributions at various levels over the years. He was also a long standing member and faithful activist of the PPP.

Minister Sawh’s contributions to the restoration of democracy in Guyana and the strides in the agricultural sector have been widely acknowledged.

The party notes that the slaying of the Minister and his relatives come at a time when certain forces are aggressively at work to spread fear and harm the peace in Guyana as we head closer to Regional and General Elections. One of the possible objectives of this assassination might be to foment hatred and violence and fracture the unity of our country. This must be resisted at all cost by all peace-loving Guyanese.

The PPP calls on the security forces to ensure that those responsible for this assassination are brought to justice at the soonest. The Party also insists that no lead must be ignored.

The party will be making a comprehensive statement on this matter after its leadership makes a fuller assessment of this situation and when more information is available.

The PPP expresses its deepest condolences to the family and relatives of Minister Sawh and hope that those injured would have a speedy recovery.

Chameli, I am confused myself... My sister just spoke to Mr Sawh's cousin... she said the kids were not at home, they were out at a nite club when the incident happened. Apparently the wife was indoors and not on the verandah..

The family is grieving and also very angry at the same time.. Trust me, they are not going to take this easy.

I do hope that the guyanese community in Canada does everything in their power to have this matter invistigated, including asking the Canadian authorities to investigate the death of one of its citizens.

The guyanese community may have to mobilize in order to get them to act.
