THE INTRIGUING STORY OF PLACE NAMES OF GUYANA

It is a pleasure to finally see you make an appearance on GNI and for posting this article. I have a list of villages that once had coffee and sugar plantations which dates back to the early 1800s. For some reason, I notice that several of those villages are no longer on the map of Guyana, either their boundaries were redrawn and became part of other neighboring villages, also their exact location were not given but just the county that they were situated in.

I was thinking of including this as part of the work that Raymond and myself have been trying to document on the early period of indentureship.

Berbice had a significant settlement of Jews in 1639, who were fleeing religious persecution in Brazil, they settled in what was then the Dutch colony of Berbice but later moved to Suriname.

Many of the Jews also came from Spain as they fled the Spanish Inquisition....

Yes, the expulsion of 1492, the same year Columbus started his journies... Go back a page for Errol's and my comments, we said what you repeated on this page. Let's hope the young folks here appreciate our knowledge. Smile

Dove, you bet I apprectiate all the inputs from you, Churchill and Errol! I have learned more about my country in one day than I did living there! Smile (maybe I should I have paid more attention in history class too clever Big Grin)
