...the nuns and priests who came to GY were mostly Irish... this is some of the history that many of our under 30 nationals and offspring wouldn't readily know today. They were dispatched to bring Christinanity/Catholicism etc. to the Guyanese subjects of the UK.

My father was named for his father's boss, he was born in March and was named by the Irish Superintendent for St. Patrick's day...

...blame it on history not taught by omission; yes they were very much there. Smile

Some of those German names come from those who fled Hitler's wrath or escaped not to be charged for their role in the Holocaust; ever wonder who so many Argentinian and Venezuelan have surnames like Rincon or Cabbad etc... they found South America to be a nice haven for them in Venezuela, you'll find some part that look exactly like the homes and towns the left in Europe.

There were also Scottish and Welsh plantation owners and overseers. Also a number of Irish soldiers were sent to British Guiana to help "keep the peace" and to prevent slave rebellion. One such soldier was Staunton St. Claire who spent 3 years in BG around 1805-1808.

Terry hails from Berbice, that part of Guyana that gave us such LEGENDS as Dr. Cheddi Jagan (former President of Guyana) and Rohan Kanhai (leader in the Sport of Cricket); so too, Terry is a leader in the field of music & is the unofficial goodwill Ambassador for Guyanese Music & Culture.

Terry Vivekanand Gajraj started singing as a little boy in the FYRISH ROAD Mandir where his Aja (Grandfather) was the Pandit (Priest). Terry's Dad & Uncles (cha-cha) taught him to play various instruments such as the Dholak, Dantal, Harmonium, Keyboard & Guitar.
