I will set you up. I know a few of them that do it here in Toronto for the homeless and poor.

I will get the info and pass it on.

Got it. I will be there this weekend. If you got an address directly, I can drop some moola off rather than send a cheque. Think I heard about them before..a guyana group? My cozs frequent one that is really good...I don't think they have an organized mosque....but regardless, if they are working with the poor and homeless, I will deal with them.

I have done the internet udhiya many times. I also have a relative in Guyana who is heavily involved in helping needy people and I trust her more than I trust myself. So I use her on other occasions. In my opinion, needy in the US are not really needy since almost all of us can live somewhat comfortably. It is our inflated desire for stuff which keep us in debt. And the homeless would probably be apprehensive in receiving opened food from strangers anyway. So Guyana is the best bet. They people there need it and they are not unaccustomed to it. But don't overlook the internet option although one can never be sure where that money will end up.

Accepted, but there shouldn't be. We must help them where they are but for open meat, it is better in a place like Guyana. It is very difficult abiding by the 3 splits of the meat over here.

agreed on all counts. There is udhiya and then there is sadaqa. I try to kill all birds by giving what I can here, and since God has not made me too poor, giving in Guyana as well when I can afford it. Even though there might be a little pilfering here and there, it is a third world country....

All I can say is, and I know it might give the wrong impression, is that for most of us, we can afford to give a lot. I don't do as much as I should and in this I feel bad..because my family was extremely poor. Despite appearances. And some people were SOOOOO helpful. Coming from Guyana, I know what it is to receive even a 200. as a gift.
IN this day and age, when crusaders are using the economic plight of many guyanese as a pretext for conversions WITHOUT GOOD INTENTION, we ought to ensure that we think about doing more. Whehter hindu, chrisitan, muslim..we need to support those that need it. If we must draw lines of religious boundaries, by all means do so....but let us help.
Last night I found out from my sis that GNI collections have been amazingly effective. For that, despite the crapola that goes on this forum, I am happy to be associated with it. ALthogh some of you rasspakahs should send some more food to san diego.
