Pilgrims to get halal vaccine

KUALA LUMPUR Malaysia plans to develop a halal meningitis vaccine jointly with Cuba within the next two years. Most meningitis vaccines are produced from pig products, which are forbidden among Muslims.

The project will cost 3.6 million ringgit (£520,000) and is aimed at the thousands of Muslims who are infected with the disease during the annual Haj pilgrimage to Mecca.

Mustapa Mohamed, the Higher Education Minister, said that Malaysia would provide two million ringgit for the project while Cuba would fund the remaining 1.6 million. The halal vaccine is a joint project between Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and the Finlay Institute, in Havana.

Mr Mustapa said that 12 USM specialists and 30 Cuban experts would develop the vaccine from halal extracts from animals slaughtered according to Islamic rules.

Malaysia is trying to position itself as a global hub for the halal industry, which it estimates to be worth £280 billion annually. (AFP)

I hear you. There is a whole long school of thought on this issue about that which is not actually eaten. Just fi hut up u head...many sudani jurists allow suede wrist watch bands because they say the Q did not forbid the use of Ms Piggy..it just forbade the eating of Ms. Piggy.

Here is ONE view: like khamr, pork is only forbidden in terms of its being ingested as food...and theorists have all sorts of views on this. So, some people will not use perfume that has alcohol. But the Quran does NOT prohibit khamr because of its smell. so in this view, you can use it for other than drinking. Same qiyas can apply to hog in this view.
The reason I bring it up: in NYC and North America, when we see the vast variety of Muslims doing things differently, we sometimes just gotta stay quiet...and even though the hadith is false "ikhtilaf ummati rahmat"..in principle it is extremely within the Islamic worldview. Same applies to Xity, Judaism and all other religions.

Malaysia has long, in the medical field, been of service in the idea of "islamic" alternatives. It has face creams, toothpaste etc (ZAibuk or something like that)..no animal products. I toyed with the idea of exporting to GUyana, but the cost was too much. IN terms of industry etc...as a Muslim nation, it is as good as turkey. Got its own car as well...won awards in england (Proton Saga)--I think the Jamaicans import it..
