No place for racism

It’s the year 2008, and still, people need to speak out against racism.

It’s sad but true.

We hear racist comments, jokes, and whispers almost daily, and in Williams Lake, it usually involves First Nations.

That is, First Nations people are discriminated against, judged, and treated differently because of their ethnicity.

And racism can be tricky.

From Heritage Canada’s website on multiculturalism: “Racism is a complex issue. It is created and perpetuated by inequalities of power, resources and opportunities that have social and economic consequences for both victims and beneficiaries. Moreover, racism takes many forms. It can be direct and overt, referring to attitudes, actions, policies and practices that openly embody the assumption that one ethno-racial group is superior to - or more deserving - than another.

“This form of racism includes hate-motivated crime and hate propaganda. Racism can also be indirect or covert, introduced consciously or unconsciously. It results in systemic racism, where policies and practices that adversely affect ethno-racial and ethno-cultural groups are embedded as the social norm.”

In Williams lake, it seems our racism is partly unconscious. We hear of the 712 gang, intoxicated people in Boitanio Park, and panhandlers near the park. And we hear, each time, those people are First Nations.

So assumptions start to be made. Conclusions start to be drawn. And racism rears its ugly head.

It’s worth remembering that old slogan that we’re all the same colour on the inside. No one wants to be judged on the colour of their skin, or painted with the same brush as someone else.

A tiny fraction of Muslims (and other ethnic groups) are terrorists. A tiny fraction of Caucasians are neo-Nazis. The vast majority of Muslims don’t want to be judged because of Osama bin Laden. Whites wouldn’t want to be judged because of a David Duke or a Ernst Zündel.

And so no one else should be judged based on sweeping judgements or assumptions about people of the same ethnicity.

Cariboo South MLA Charlie Wyse put it very well: “tolerance and acceptance strengthens us as a community.”

The community has enough problems to be solved, together, and that takes clarity and focus.

Racism, prejudice, and stereotypes only cloud judgement and make problem-solving that much harder

Hi P.Juno, the article tells a good message. I think here is more suited for it than Political or Social.

Imala: I should give you a nuggee. The racism was started against the natives by the settlers who used the biblical imagery of canaanites to describe them...meaning that they were to be annihilated. That is the religious aspect of the post.

DS: You are making mountain out of a mole hill. Keep your ancient theory for your students and concentrate on modern time racism. You have a constant overtone on every subject matter, even from a flying bird's ass before the shit fall on your head.

Ai you coolie turncoat: take a survey of the board and see who is the uninvited trespasser, dirtying everything hitherto clean.
Butthe only thing ancient on this board is your penchant for making a gaddaha out of your ridiculous self. Although..I must admit, some of your jokes are ovamaak funny.

Bhai; you must learn when to pick an argument. That is one you ought to have thought carefully about approaching. Every Christian with a conscience admits that it was a crime against humanity to liken the natives to canaanites. And here you are...while hypocritically professing to love this land, making light of its autochtonous people. Come down to San Diego for confession...or better yet, do the proper thing and commit suicide

I thought this racism thread was meant for more serious and sacred reasons to be here rather than on political. Now it had become a social thread. This is why racism will have to live on. Shame on you people.

Okay...Juno, we are serious. Why do you feel racism has nothing to do with Religion?

ALthough in truth, I might just ignore u..but then...you would be writing from now till my great great great great grandpicknees become grandparents...if you were to talk about controversies in your professed ism.

I'm serious.
One preacher told me Jesus cannot be black because the virtues he exhibited could not have been that of a black man in the 1st century.

Also, look at the imagery of the Catholic church, as well as contemporary Christian literature. God (Jesus) is always portrayed as a white long haired fella. Ask Mel Gibson. Even the shroud of turin has European caucasian features.

Jesus had to be white since God inspired white men to slave the brown and blacks.

Hmmmm...Terry, I think that was a racist comment from the preacher. Didn't you ask him what were those virtues? Yes, I've seen what they have in the Catholic church. The next time I see a Catholic, I'm going to pose the question of God's color and I will report here. BTW, does security still give you the pat down and check your bag when you visit that Catholic church in downtwon NY?
