Protests against 'anti-Hindu' book in South Africa +
March 04, 2007
Hindu groups in South Africa on Sunday protested against the distribution of an "anti-Hindu" book by a man who recently accused Mahatma Gandhi of being a "racist." Ram Maharaj, president of the South African Hindu Dharma Sabha, and Rugbeer Kalideen, secretary general of the South African Hindu Maha Sabha, have accused Yousuf Deedat of Durban of violating the rights of Hindus and called on the Human Rights Commission to investigate the matter. Deedat, who was recently lambasted by both Muslims and Hindus for distributing another book titled Gandhi: A Stooge of the White South African Government, is now circulating a book that claims Hinduism is fraught with "immorality and indecency." The book titled Oh You Hindu Awake is reportedly authored by a Dr Chatterjee. Maharaj said he felt "physically sick" after reading the book. "Deedat Junior has broken a promise his father made to us 12 years ago to stop the circulation of the book," he said. "He's done it too many times. We are going to the Human Rights Commission with this book. It has to be banned," Maharaj added. Kalideen said, "It is a shocking, vile piece of writing. Deedat seems ignorant of the fact that it is unconstitutional to denigrate any religion." But Deedat claimed that the information in the book was factual. "I fear nothing, because the information contained in the book is factual. The book was withdrawn in 1995 because we didn't know the new system very well. People are powerless to stop this now," he said.

This author must be so very lucky...you just can't buy this type of publicity. Look, if Hinduism can withstand the test of time, then this book should be of little concern to Hindus. Ghandi was a mere mortal....and it only took his pride to be crushed before he woke up to the realities of the Indians and the British Raj'a dominance. It should make interesting reading. Big up Yousef Deedat.

I truly respected the father's polemic against other religions. but sometimes, since he was not a scholar, he broke the rules of logic and propriety. For example, he focused on the lingam and yoni scenario in hindusim in the most salacious manner. Forgetting that the Adam and Eve imagery in Judaism/Christianity and Islam is coming from the same perspective. The concept of creation...and when the HEbrew bible talks of a "serpent" coming between them, it gets all the more suggestive..even though there are many who think of a real snake involved. yeah right.

Ahmad Deedat's information came from his vast reading. He did have rough edges though which I find very common with Indians/Pakistanis. Only now that we live in America and are accustomed to people speaking softly that the Indian movie stars' tones appear to be barking at each other.

Please elaborate.

Hey we Guyanese Hindus also have the "academic" Kean Gibson to contend with.

Why elaborate on that which, as Kaz pointed out, had roughness to it? He was vastly read...but as I think you know, one can read hindu writings to eons, but if s/he does not do wo with a LEARNED PANDIT, and then takes the SYMBOLISM at face value, then s/he walks away with a totally wrong idea of hinduism. So he talks aabout the lingam being a phallic symbol, and the yoni being the vagina. but this is all he saw..from the viewpoint of sex and sexual depiction being dirty. But is that what it is? If one talks about lingam and yoni from the point of view of physical and pornography, it is not right. But if one understands that in the lingam and yoni we are talking about the yin and yang, and the necessity of the universe to function ONLY on the proper use of MALE AND FEMALE interaction, then one sees a diff. idea coing forth. It is a message that without mutual respect we are not good human beings. And if in the society of the rishis, there was nothing wrong in using a phallic symbol, why should we misrepresent it? Since hinduism in not my field of specialty, perhaps you can check with some of the university profs in your area on that symbolism.

How does this tie with the icons on the temple of a man doing a horse?

Interesting. Could you post it? And are we sure that it is just again not one that works with the concept of interaction between humans and other forms of life to make a good cosmos? The Greeks had it as fauns, centaurs etc..and we think that civilization was great...

BTW; i just found out something...that it was a JAIN DIGAMBARA that stopped alexander the great in his tracks. Turns out that the Digambara sadhus are naked..and that when Alex came to India, this man was in his way. He refused to speak to shorty until he took off his armor and sat on the ground. Thus humbled, Alex turned back. Is it true? Sounds not impossible. Alex was looking for an excuse to go home. Is it possible that this is the PORUS of whom we hear? I don't know.

Certain temples (and this no attack on hidduism) had temple prostitutes who received money for services to pilgrims. The deed was actually performed in the temples. The icons on some temples are very graphic and suggestive, not sublime or philosophical.

How does the Qur'an relate the events of Adam and Eve above. Does the Qur'an have a similar scenerio?

Ah Terry..that is because in Hinduism, there are goals of life. AMong them is that of sexual happiness (kama)..and so the sex act among couples is seen as a form of worship. (as it is in some hadith). Don't forget that the gods and goddesses have spouses in hinduism, making divine congress something good. And so Nefzawi, the tenth century Muslim doctor who wrote perfumed garden drew heavily from Vatsayana's Kama Sutra....we may not seem them as sublime or philosophical..but if you add tantra to them, it does become so.

The term "prostitute" is a western one that carries with it a negative connotation. DOn't lets forget. I am thinking about opening one such temple here so if anybody wants to volunteer service, I shall provide meals.

The QUr'an presupposes several things: a. that we know the story of adam and eve (which is why her name is never mentioned, but the muslim exegetes knew it and never doubted it). b. that it is coming from a different ethical viewpoint: that it was not eve who sinned, but it lays the blame on BOTH. c. For the Qur'an, the issue is not repeating what we already know, but focusing on God's forgiveness...for whereas in the Bible, God punishes them with a horrible curse, in the Qur'an GOd forgives them. The concept of sex and childbirth has no negative connotations in ISalm as the bible story would give...

The only time the "holy prostitutes" would have a negative truth is if the Chinese restaurant ownner near to laker pronounced the word in the Chinese accent "holy prostitutes". But even then, they would be plostitutes and not pRostitutes.

d. The q never mentions anything bout any snake. But it does tell us that before hte fall, they were naked..and that their nakedness was not a problem. Seems that only after the disobeyed God, listened to Satan, did the concept of discrimination and hatred come into play..not only between man and wife, male and female, but between us and satan.

Hey Khal...quick question. If a woman has sex with one man 1000 times, she is a prostitute. But if a woman have sex 1000 times with one man she is a wife. Ain't it sex 1000 times no matter how you look at it. And if variety is the spice of life, then I am not going to answer whose life was more rewarding.

And pon tap this woman should go straight to heaven...cause she made 1000 men happy, as opppose to making one man happy.

Terry bai, sex is okay. Nothing wrong with it. Doan let them people tell you bout fermones etc...sex is good. Just enjoy the sights and sounds.

U see u wan't me fi get excommunicated from some religion. Let's go further: if she marrid, is okay. if she not, is *****dom. But is it not the SAME action? a pestle is a pestle and a mortar is a mortar, and the movement is the same. I shall refuse to answer questions as to if I have taken this type of logic to certain relationships. Dat is between me and mi Gawd.
