· The newly constructed $15 M Masjid Nur-ul-Islam at Tuschen, New Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, was officially opened on Sunday 11th March 2007, in memory of the late Yacinth Ali. The opening saw a large gathering and the programme included prayers and thanksgiving.

Yacinth Ali was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Itwaru Seepersaud of Good Intent, Leguan, Essequibo. She migrated to the United States with her husband and family in 1986 and resided in Richmond Hill, New York. She was buried in the Linden Cemetery in Rose Hill, New Jersey on May 29, 2004. She was described as a devoted wife and mother who left a very closely knit family whose strength is founded in loving and sharing. Her husband, Shafiat Ali, and children, Shazam, Suriah and Shafraz, two grand children and daughter-in-law, Ameera Ali, were all there yesterday for the opening of the masjid. The project was funded by the family.

Minister of Housing and Water, Mr Harrinarine Nawbatt, was at the ceremony, and in an address, said the government is very conscious of the need for religious education in communities around the country. He added that the need to bring people together brings unity and this leads to development. Mr. Nawbatt said the objectives of the masjid should be to bring peace, stability and racial harmony in communities. The masjid which he described as a “place of learning” was constructed on two house lots. Also making brief remarks was President of the Guyana Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG), Fazeel Feroze. CIOG Education and Dawah Head, Shaikh Mooenul Hack spoke of the objectives of a masjid in which he explained the duties of the masjid which he described as a place of prayers, with sermons on Fridays and Islamic lectures.
