Interesting question. According to the laws of Islam, Muslims may eat crabs. I assume your question however is not out of the blue since many guyanese Muslims opine differently being that the crab is essentially a scavenger. But the rule as it applies to food in Islam is that "the basic rule is permissibility." And since crab is not among the list of prohibited foods in the Q, it is okay.
Also, for those who rely on hadith, the first hadith in the section on "purification" is that" The prophet said concerning the sea: its water and food are okay." The hadith for water was not about consumption, but about use for ritual purification; the food part basically means any sea creature is okay. Some Muslims will not eat shark because the arabic for it is "sea dog"...and dogs are forbidden for food in Islam, hence the illogical connection... |

Again a cogent question even though you may have meant it in fun. Many Muslims associate the prohibition against swine to mean that anything re the family is forbidden. That is actually not according to the text. The pig is prohibited for no clear reason, but the restriction is for pig only. NOt pig cousin, if indeed the labba be that. Or course, the labba might qualify/disqualify under other restrictive elements outlined in the verses on forbidden food. |

Limer, Super M: here is a good food law to memorize: al asl fi'l ashyaa al ibaaha..the governing rule (in things) is permissibility.
The Q works on a different legal system from the Bible for the most part: in the former, GOd has to FORBID something clearly, otherwise it is halaal. While the bible does not present a counter philosophy, the early Jewish theologians, based on the ten commandments, basically said that if something is ALLOWABLE< then God has to so dictate. Hence the obsession with commandments and proscriptions. 613 of them. |

Dara thank you for your explanation....the question was prompted because a Jewish acquaintance of mine said that it was forbidden in his religion to eat crabs....I read somewhere that there were general similarities between "kosher" and "halal" so I thought that Muslims might have been forbidden to eat crabs also.....
Several Guyanese muslims mentioned to me that they do not eat crabs whilst others really enjoy the dish.....after careful thought on the topic I would like to ask do crabs really come from the sea or from the mudhole? |
