teh rule is you can't generally say "The Hindu law" or the "islamic law" says so and so because, as Kevin Reinhart puts it in "teaching Islam"
When teaching about islam and other non-christian traditons, however, there is the tendency to smudge the particularities and varieties of the tradition that stretches from the philippines to philadelphia, it is tempting to essentialize. ...
What is islam's position on abortion" they ask. My stock mantra in reply "which muslims and when". It is crucial to insist that it is Muslims who are agents and to avoid the hypostatization of something called Islam into an agent that acts, thinks, or believes. Islam does not think, require or hold positions: Muslims do....

My addition: that means that every jackass, gaddaha, corhi sheikh/pandit can talk about what "islam" or "hinduism: says..but really, he is pushing HIS view.
The Christian and JEwish schoalrs for the MOST part don;t make that mistake..they KNOW that what they say is THEIR OWN view, and except for fundies, don't try to IMPOSE that as law on an ENTIRE community....
