Mitwah, I am disgusted and very annoyed that them socalled Religious Leaders are more concerned with how much they receive for a Jhandi or Khata than the correct date for Phagwa. I am not surprise that young people are not interested in their Hypocrisy.

Nehru, I am not a pandit. I have never heard of this problem. That's not to say that some of these guys are not avaricious. Our Hindu community is small and word gets around very fast. Pandits should not set fees nor are their fees regulated. Some hold down jobs and some do it full time. They do have a family to feed and most depend on the generosity of their devotees. This is called dakshna and it's a belief system that you recive special blessings for the Lord to give you the means to be able to provide for these occasions and humanity as a whole.

Like the pandits, I am invited with my Kirtan group to participate at many functions. We do not set a price or will never ask for compensation. We consider this as our sewa to dharam. People in our community are very generous.

With respect to arty, see the meaning of the song Jyot se Jyot on the Mukesh thread. Personally, I only put money (donation) when it comes around in the temples or if I know that the money is going towards a good cause. Otherwise, I will offer a petal and take my blessings.

These bad apples could be pointed out to the pandits council in your area.

Could you PM me their names and contact info?

Mitwah, My point was that how De Hell they cannot get the Date correct!!!They announced Dat Phagwa will be Celebrated on March 3 and then the very last moment said OOps we are sorry it is Mar 4. Dat is what is Pissing me Off. I am not blaming all Religious Leaders. As Bob Marler said, "Who Da Cap fit let Dem wear it"

Mitwah, I am not going to name names but their are Pandits who will make excuses not to do your Jhandi a second time if they were not satisfied with your Fees the first time.

We don't have that problem in Ontario. I am guessing some people wants to tie it in with India which is further East. Purnima (Full Moon) is 6:17 PM Saturday, March 3. Burning of Holika is done on this day and Phagwah is celebrated the next day.

This is adharmic and they should be exposed. Most people would give $100 - $150. I do know of others who would pay the passage to fly in their favorite priest and pay a $1000. There is even people in Guyana and T'dad who would sponsor Yajnas and fly in pandits and comepnsate heavily. It's up to the affordabilty of the individual.

Seema, you waan dem kill me nuh? Simply for comparison..one can assess themes. The rescue of bhakta from the fire is almost like the rescue of Abraham from the fire. Just a point. Not trying to start an argument. Same goes for birth of buddha and Jesus.

It does not matter which verse whoever comes with....there is NOTHING in the Qur'an that justifies the nonsense he was advocating. I can't think of any verse, hence I can't even bring up one and respond to it. WE ALL KNOW that Jesus was not born on DEC 25. The date was chosen becaue of its significance in Roman Pagan Religion. But if we hit out at the Xians for their lack of accuracy, they can hit back asking us to prove Muhammad was born when we say he was. We cannot. Hence, from the logic of Xmas being wrong because of the historical unreliability of the date, so too is Yawn Mawlid an nabi.

Doc...i dont recall the verse at all..but it had something to do with muslims not associating themselves with ???non-muslims( there is a 'name' used here for non-muslims...
Christmas has been long gone...so i dont remember the actual verse/msg)
The point is not about Jesus' bday...SM's problem was muslims greeting others with 'merry christmas'!!

about dec 25th..as far as i know..it's not the birthDAY of Jesus that Christians celebrate but rather the BIRTH of Jesus ...i have never been told that Jesus was BORN on Dec 25th, althoughiI am quite aware that some folks beleive this..even some Christians
i'm not that much into religion and dont know a whole lot...

the only reason i'm asking about what SuperMike posted is because I didnt understand what he claimed ... simply because I have many Muslim relatives and friends (including clerics/imams/missionaries) and they have never conveyed this message to me...reading that verse botheredme a bitbecause i was wodnering if this ishow my frenz and family felt being around me as a non-muslim)

I am asking YOU DOC, because YOU r knowlegable in the origingal language of the Q'uran and i wanted to know what this particular verse actually means or refers to..

again..i should mention that i am not sure if the verse he quoted from was from the Q'uran

Where is SuperM and why isnt he posting the verse he quoted ???? Maybe he is bz for the weekend..solet's wait until he has times to read this thread!

Here is what i recall SM saying (something to this effect:)

Muslims r instructed not to join the Kuffars/Kuffirs(??) in their celebrations but they they should stick to their celebrations that Allah gave to them ..he also said that muslims must stay away from these celebrations of the kuffars/kuffirs(i dont recall the exact term he used)

So SM..pls repost that verse and let the 'DOCTA SCHOLAR' translate the original arabic..and interpret it for us..thank you
