So many are confused - Islam is against technology; We should go back to riding camels; We should go back to shooting arrows; the list goes on and on...

Islam greatly encourages the study of science and to use our discoveries to enhance our lives. Allah(swt) created the universe for us...and us to worhip Him(swt).

The problem comes about when one wants to innovate in matters of religion and worship.
Changes in matters of worship is strictly forbidden (at least for those who believe). This includes the changing of the laws (Shariah) as well - His laws are perfect and does not need you and me to "modernize" it.

So, simply put, if it matters with religion or worship - it is here to stay - other than that - knock yourself out (so long as it is halaal, of course ;-)

So Limerbhai, since I did not see the crescent personally and don't trust those who said that they did, am I supposed to skip the eid this year?

Bear in mind the pilgrims are gathering on the day of Arafat on Tuesday

Should we take this into consideration and celebrate on Wednesday:?

Thanks. Exactly the answer I was looking for. You make adjustments with changing times. That is why shariah is fluid. It changes with times and conditions. The core belief of Laa Ilaaha IlAllahu Muhammadur RasulAllah does not change but the practices do with the conditions. Take fasting in Alaska at certain times for instance. Can you really use the dawn to dusk rule there. Muslims are not forsaking their beliefs, only applying workable methods to practice it. Start demanding/enforcing old practices and people will forsake it out of disgust and God forbid, they surrender their faith also. What is so wrong with this argument?

Depends on what you consider halaal. :) Could be different from what I consider halaal. :))

BTW, I had beef for dinner. I got it from a store where the guy says it is halaal. Some of the other Muslims say that the guy don't sell halaal. The man is even a haaji. I wonder if some of the other halaal stores are saying that out of competition? :))

Kaz,
It's easy for folks to destroy peoples credibility.Continue to support the buthcer untill someone can substantiate their allegations.

I support all of them when I am in their neighborhood. I get my stuff from this shop because it is closest to my home. The man is Paki and very simple and friendly. Don't have a problem with him.

Time for a khutba. Bida are of two kinds: dunawiya and shari'a. The last is forbidden, the first is necessary> Once again, WHERE in the QU'ran does it tell us to sight the moon? Read the verses properly.
TI> there are some people who are carried around for tawaf, depending on the situation. The tawaf the sa'y is in itself an act of worship..but the sighting of the moon is not. LEt us get schooled in the basics first...
