Best of Bollywood Honours Hari Om Sharan
Written by Administrator
October 12, 2004

Hari Om Sharan with Nandini SharanHari Om SharanThe best of Hollywood's music industry took time off from their hectic schedule to pay tribute to the world's premier bhajan singer, Hari Om Sharan. In honor of the lifetime work of this living legend, the Bramhm Prince Company has produced an album of Hari Om's bhajans, sung by the front runners of India's music industry, titled "Hari Om - A Life in Prayer."
Neil Prashad, founder of the Bramhin Prince Company and producer of this CD, has called on the leading singers and musicians in India to pay tribute to Hari Om Sharan, in which they all agreed with sincerity and conviction. The multitude of singers and musicians who lent their time, support and voices to its fruition captures this CD's uniqueness. Bhajan Samraat Anup Jalotaji said, "I have learned so much from listening to the bhajans of Pt. Hari Om Sharan ji. It is an honor to be able to pay tribute to this great singer by singing one of his bhajans."

Hariharan of Colonial Cousins and winner of MTV Viewers Choice Award and US Billboard Award, expressed himself by thanking Hari Om Ji for the spirituality that he brought to the world. "It is an honor and privilege to sing on this album. I was delighted when I heard about the project and am happy to be a part of it," expressed Hariharan. Another celebrity on the album is Kavita Krishnamurthy, winner of four Filmfare Awards - the equivalent of America's Oscar - most recently for Dola Re (Devdas). "What struck me most, is the simplicity with which he sings. It is almost like the person singing is a 'sant' or 'fakir'," said Kavita.

The conglomerate of singers also include Sonu Nigam, the voice of Mohammed Rafi and winner of the 2004 Filmfare Award for best male playback singer (Kal Ho Na Ho); Shankar Mahadevan, 2004 Filmfare award winner for Dil Chahta Hai; Richa Sharma winner of the Bollywood Awards 2002; Sadhana Sargam who has recorded hundreds of songs for the nostalgic series, Yaaden; India's hottest popular singer and winner of the Zee Cine Awards 2004, Shaan; Mahalaxmi lyer (Chhalkaa Chhalkaa) and Sunidhi Chauhan award winner for 'Bumbro' (Mission Kashmir).

Hari Om Sharan - Tribute CDA production of such magnitude naturally attracted some of India's greatest musicians. World's famous percussionist Sivamani, (Taal, Lagaan) provides the backdrop upon which this amazing tribute is painted. This album also debut Niladri Kumar as a Music Director, one of India's finest Sitar players and son of Pt. Kartik Kumar. This project was supported fully by santoor legend Pt. Shivkumar Sharma while his son Rahul Sharma played santoor on the album. Padma Vibhushan Pt. Jasraj, a foremost authority on Indian classical vocals, validates its authenticity with his glowing introduction. It is easy to say, in today's world of re-mixes, that this is another 'knock-off CD, a statement which is instantly silenced by the presence of Hari Om Sharan Ji at every recording session, giving his blessings to the artists and musicians. Shankar Mahadevan puts it best when he said, "This CD is our offering to the god of Bhajans, Hari Om Sharan ji."

Tribute to the late Hari Om Sharan

Alena, thank so much for showcasing the Great Hari Om Sharan: it certainly brings back so many memories in GY especially on Sunday Mornings when neighbours would play and listen attentively as they do their pooja.

A few of Hari Om's, renditions are still very popular today and this is evident when one attends functions.

Tribute to the late Hari Om Sharan

NCIC pays tribute to
By SEETA PERSAD Friday, January 25 2008

PRESIDENT OF the National Council for Indian Culture (NCIC) Deokinanan Sharma and his executive will host an evening of devotional song dedicated to the late Hari Om Sharan of India. The religious event takes place tomorrow at the Divali Nagar Site, Charlieville, Chaguanas from 7.30 pm.

Hari Om who was a close friend to the NCIC and a regular performer at Divali Nagar, passed away in New York on December 17.

Sharma said Hari Om was responsible for composing thousands of bhajans that have been released to thousands of Hindus in 23 countries around the world.

“Many religious leaders and members of temples and religious institutions in this country grew up listening to the pure voice of Hari Om. This great soul certainly planted the seed for the growth and development of Hinduism here and in other countries,” he said.

Sharan was born in Lahore (now Pakistan) in 1932 and moved with his parents to India after British India was split up in 1947. He became one of the most popular Hindu religious and ghazal singers.

He made a trip to Guyana where he fell in love with Nandini, whom he later married. He lived in Guyana for a lengthy period before he and his wife eventually settled in India. He made frequent trips to Guyana and Trinidad most recently this year. He was also a regular guest at the West Indian mandirs in NY most recently two weekends ago.

According to the coordinator of this event, Surujdeo Mangaroo, while others sought fame and fortune by singing Bollywood songs for movies, Hari Om chooses a religious path and composed songs that were filled with spiritual messages.

“These songs brought great relief to those who are religious minded. The songs composed by Hari Om are hymns sung in temples on a regular basis,” he said adding that Hari Om is considered a saint among religious writers in India.

In the 70s-80s, he recorded albums like “Premanjali Pushpanjai”, and “Data Ek Ram” and bhajans like, Tera Ram ji Karenge Bedaa Paar’, ‘Maili Chadar Odhke Kaise’, ‘Aarti Kunj Bihari ki’, ‘Aisa Pyar Bahaa De Maiyya’, ‘Shree Radhey Govind’.

Among the artistes who will be rendering devotional songs at this tribute is “Mastana Bahar” winner Pranav Maharaj. He will share the stage with Rana Mohip, Shivanand Maharaj, Dr Beni Balkaran, Dr Prahalad Sooknanan, Tricia Ramdhan, Vishnu Rampersad and Narad Maharaj.

Brother I am very sorry if I offended you in any way. I was thinking that this would be a wonderful opportunity for prorogating this deen. Maybe I am wrong, highlighting the life of Hari Om Sharah might bring us closer to Allah. The reminder is good for the believer, I am sorry if my reminder was bitter. I seek your forgiveness bro.

It is not to do me any good. FU_REAL is interested in having these guys achievements highlighted here. So it is not unreasonable to ask that he highlight their achievements here. Actually, it was quite insultive to ambush the Hari Om Sharam tribute thread with that request. It is exactly what we have criticized folks like Argy and Dre for doing. Unless we feel that we have a certain right that they don't.

Hopefully my attempt to show our hypocracy is very clear.

It would be more beneficial for us Muslims to focus on those things that will bring us closer to almighty Allah. Showing admiration for the achievements of Hari Om Sharan will not accomplish these goals, as a matter of fact it dose more harm than good.
Like I said some time ago, whatever we do can be of two consequences, it ether brings us closer to Allah or drift us very far away from Allah. You take your pick. On that day we might be asked to go join those who we admire in this dunnyah. I pray that almighty Allah make it easy for us and that we all turn up as winners on that day...a day which is true.

Have a wonderful Jummah all and remember to make a dua for this Ummah.
