And how is a Guru different from a teacher, preacher or a Saint?

How should one go about selecting a Guru?

A guru is a person that whisper some janther manther in your ears and upon whom you dole lavish gifts. The key indgredient to a guru is a preacher that is popular and knows important people so in your time of need such type can put in a good word for you to those in high places.

Bhaiji, You make me remember......

I went to a christening function some time ago. At one point during the ceremony the young fella was instructed to humble himself and present himself as a beggar to the congregation who were mainly friends and relatives of the family.

His realtives and his parents friends knew he would be off to university; so they gave very lavishly and he collected thousands. Well at the end of it all, the pundit that now became his "Guru", coveted all the gifts, since he claimed that all that was given to the young man had to be "charhaaway" and thus now belong to him and he also said that one rule is that the desciple must never question the Guru instructions.

I said to my self this is not a Guru. This is a con man. Being angry, I Left with my family immediately without creating a scene.

I wonder when our people will free themselves from this type of bondage.

Mitwah that's exactly how I would have taken it. For me a guru is someone who u look up to for guidance. I have one that I will never ever forget and even though he is in a nursing home I visit him once a week and he still think that he is in charge, I am still sored at a game of drafts that he beat me twice last week. This guy is from Goa, but has taught me that sky is the limit, but must accomplished with respect in all forms.

How did you choose him to be your Guru? Has he been able to show you the way to the light? I see parents here selecting non-resident priests, i.e. from outside of the country to be Gurus for their children. Makes no sense to me.

One thing I could never come to terms with is all these "healers" that heals so many abut are never able to heal themselves. How come Billy Graham cyant get rid of his own failing health but was able to mek lame peeples walk?

Y'all gotta blame allyou self. In ancient india, a guru was most times poor...which is why the Buddha's dad did NOT want him to be a guru.
People relied on their own spirituality, and the priests knew their limits. Now, every one wants some mumbo jumbo and lack of responsibility...so the "gurus" cashed in.
But to cater to everyone's needs, a saintly guyanese, sinless and sincere, penniless and pious, has offered to send a jharray claat to all that send a genuine 100 dalla bill to the DS ashram. The money is simply to buy a BMW so that he can drive around san diego to collect roti and pachownie for the foodless.

Mit.. when I started my first job even though I had my Univer. degree, it was a different world to me. I met this gentleman and he told me that I am giving you a chance and if I put my heart into what I am doing, he would teach me everything he knows. So to this day, I am still learning a thing or two from him. I love him as my father. For me it was not a religious thing, it was more a mentor.

Another term that is misused: pandit. A pandit is an expert...in classical hinduism, he was a debator/theorist par excellence..an intellectual. What passes in Guyana as a pandit is often some guy who could not make it thru high school and learned some nancy stories...not unlike some of the "mejis".

Our fore fathers have spent centuries to get rid of slavery and indentureship. The fuedal system that was so totalitarian and oppressive, dissapeared. Here comes a kakabatty rum sucker from Black Bush Polder and who had to back track it and can hardly speak proper English telling the people that the Guru is like a God and is the ultimate in your daily worship.

Imagine more of these backtrackers are coming from T'dad and India as well and claiming to be the chosen ones to represent the Lord of the Universe or the True Master and since he is the Master then his followers are his servants / slaves. Guru pad panj.... touching the Guru's feet can bring you salvation for doing so he is absorbing all your sins.

My blood boils to see how these people are lining up just to wash Guru's feet and offer a few dakshna.
