Golden Koran is sold for £1.1 million

LONDON A Koran dating back to the 13th century was sold for more than £1.1 million last night to an unnamed bidder.

The volume, which is signed Yahya ibn Muhammad ibn ’Umar, set world records for the sale of a Koran and for the sale of an Islamic manuscript. A spokesman for Christie’s, where the sale took place, said: “Written in 1203 AD entirely in gold, with marginal notes in silver, it is the earliest known complete dated Qur’an written in gold in the world.”

It had been expected to fetch between £250,000 and £350,000.
