I happened to be browsing a bookstore the other day and my eyes came across a tantalizing title - "Misquoting Jesus - The Story Behind who Changed the Bible and Why" - Bart D. Ehrman
Turns out that this guy is a New Testament scholar and an expert on early Christianity. I made a purchase and could not put it down. Well written, based on 30 years of research, him having attended both the Moody Bible Institue and Wheaton College. He received a Ph.D from Princeton Theological Semanary where he studied under Bruce Metzger. Book |

Changes were of 2 types - Accidental changes and Intentional changes.
John Mills, a textual critic published his Mill's Apparatus around 1707. In it he isolated some 30,000 places of variation among the hundred or so Greek Manuscripts of the New testament he studied. AT the last count, more than 5,700 Greek Manuscript have been discovered. That's 57 times the number of manuscripts that Mills studied. Today, scholars differ greatly in their estimates of variants, some say there are 200,000 variants known, some say 300,000 and some 400,000!! Despite the advancement of computer technology, no one has been able to count them. One thing is known for sure - There are more variants among the manuscripts than there are words in the New testament!! A well-known example of Intentional Change is in Matt 24:36, where Jesus(pbuh) is predicting the end of the age and he says that "concerning that day and hour, no one knows - not the Angels in Heaven, nor even the Son, but only the Father." Scribes found this passage difficult: the Son of God, Jesus himself, does not know when the end of time will come? How could that be? Isn't he all-knowing? To resolve this problem, the scribes simple modified the text by taking out the words "nor even the Son." Now the Angels of God may be ignorant, but the Son of God isn't. Some verses that were not in the original New testament. 1. John 5:7 - There are three that that bear witness in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one. 2. John 8:7 Let the one who is without sin among you be the first to cast the stone at her. 3. John 8:11 Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more. |

Notes on The origin of the New Testament.
In the 2nd and 3rd centuries there were Christians who believed that there was was only one God, the creator of all that there is. Others (who also call themselves Christians) insist that there were 2 Gods - the God of the Old Testament (A God of wrath) and one of the New testament (a god of mercy). Other Groups (the Gnostic Christions) insisted that there were 12 Gods while others say 30 and still others, 365 Gods. Why did they not read the New testamnet to find out? There was none! While all the books of the New Testament was written by this time, there were many others as well, such as, other Gospels, Acts, Epistles, and Apocalypses having very different perspectives than the books that actually became part of the New Testament. The Eventual New Testament itself emerged out of these conflicts over God (or Gods), as one group acquired more converts than the others. There were many conflicts - some believed that Jesus was the son of God who was both human and devine while other believe he was all human and not devine and others say he was all divine and not human. Only one of these groups "won' out in the debates. |
