Kunal Kapoor (born 18 October 1975 in New Delhi, India) is an Indian actor.
Kunal Kapoor made his debut in Bollywood as an assistant director for Rakeysh Mehra's Aks. Later he entered Bollywood with a new avatar (as an actor) starring opposite Tabu in Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities (2004). The film did not do well at the box office. He came into prominence with his following film Rang De Basanti (2006). The film was critically and commercially successful, and it was India's official entry to the Oscars and the Bafta's. His performance was acclaimed and he received a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award nomination. He has done a number of plays and has worked with Motley, a theatre group by Naseeruddin Shah. He has also done a couple of ads. A film-buff, Kunal loves everything that goes into the making of a film- editing, cinematography, production design and all the other technicalities. He has recently decided to try out scriptwriting. His recent release was Hatrick. He is starring in two films by Yash Raj Films: Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and Aaja Nachle (2007) and Ramesh Sippy's untitled film. Recently he appeared in a celebrity talk show called Koffee with Karan. He is the brand ambassador of Indian Terrain and Thums Up (India). |

One man, many roles in the head: Kunal Kapoor
After the stock markets, a textile company and a construction house, Kunal Kapoor finally bumped into Rakeysh Mehra, who didnt have the Y in his first name then and made ads rather than movies. Kunal was Mehras model for the Shell oil commercial. After the shoot, Kunal walked up to Mehra and asked: Can I join your team? Mehra replied: What will you do? “I will just hang around on the setsâ€, smiled Kunal. The casual hanging around went on to evolve into being part of Mehras principal cast for his second feature film Rang De Basanti. Even when I assisted Rakeysh for Aks, I would love to go in front of the camera, for rehearsals or light set-ups, Kunal tells Metro. There was this really strong desire to become an actor. That desire did materialise, when Kunal auditioned for M.F. Hussains Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities. The screen-test was a complete disaster when I had to do a humourous role seriously, he recalls. But Hussainsaab asked me to do it again and I was on. Halfway through the making of Meenaxi Kunal realised that acting was his true calling. I went to Naseeruddin Shah and worked with his theatre group for two projects. In fact, it was in Calcutta that I shared stage with him for the first time during The Prophet. Meanwhile, Mehra had readied the script of Rang De Basanti and wanted Kunal to read it, just as a friend. After going through the script, I really liked the part that I am now playing, Kunal says. Thankfully, things didnt work out with the actor who was supposed to do the role. So, I became Aslam, the middle-class boy from Chandni Chowk who lives in constant volatility. Quiz him about his love interest in the movie and pat comes the reply from Kunal: I have four: Aamir Khan, Siddharth, Sharman Joshi and Atul Kulkarni. It’s quite amazing that all of us hit it off instantly and the relationship went beyond the sets. So much so that Kunal was one of the few Bollywood guests at Aamir’s marriage. For me, it was just a friends wedding and we had a lot of fun and masti. Awaiting the release of Rang De Basanti on January 26, Kunal hasn’t signed on anything new. I am just obsessed with movies. I will surely take up new acting assignments and would also look at directing films some day. |

'Everyday I tell Hrithik I hate him'
April 05, 2007 16:34 IST Now, Karan Johar brings us the next generation. This Sunday, Koffee welcomes (seated left-right) Ritesh Deshmukh, Konkona Sensharma and Kunal Kapoor. The talented actors have quite a blast with Johar, and his insanely casual chat style. Here are some memorable snippets: Karan: Your father, when he saw you [in drag] in Apna Sapna Money Money, what was his reaction? Ritesh: He was like, 'is that you? What's wrong with you?' Karan: When you were on the sets, was there any man who hit on you? Who? Ritesh: Anupam Kher. And Chunky Pandey asked me, 'what are you doing after the shoot? Will you join me for coffee?' Karan: So, Chunky Pandey and Anupam Kher actually hit on you ? Ritesh: As in, they asked me for 'coffee?' (laughs) -- Karan: So you and Hrithik Roshan are childhood friends? Kunal: Ya Karan: Tough act to follow Kunal: It's just very annoying. I call him up every day, and tell him how much I hate him. Because every time you feel you are doing something good, he sets the standard a little higher and then you have to make double the effort. I love him as a person but I hate him professionally, and I make sure I tell him that. -- For the rest of the conversation -- which includes Ritesh admitting he'd hate to have Kareena Kapoor tie him a rakhi, and Konkona talking about the one mainstream actor she'd love to date -- catch the show. |
