Bollywood actress in UK ballet

Thursday, 19 July, 2001, 16:42 GMT 17:42 UK

Hema Malini's daughters are making their UK debut

Bollywood actress Hema Malini is to perform in an Indian ballet in the UK with her two daughters.

The Arts and Music Academy will present Mahalakshmi on 21 July at the Wembley Conference Centre.

Mahalakshmi is the story of Hindu Goddess Lakshmi. There are 14 scenes depicting mythological events.

The aim of the production is to introduce UK audiences to Indian ballet. The ballet will be narrated by Malini in Hindi and English.

Known as India's "Dream Girl", Hema Malini is one of Bollywood's best known and most talented stars. She has been a dancer, actress, producer and director.

Acclaim

Daughter Esha Deol has followed in her mother's footsteps, starring in films alongside famous Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan.

Esha and Ahana Deol, Malini's other daughter, are making their UK debut in the ballet, accompanied by a about 30 classical dancers and musicians.

Malini has performed her ballet in numerous countries to great acclaim, including New York, Seattle, Portugal, Bahrain, Dubai and Jakarta.

When Malini performed in the US, there were thousands at each performance.

New York critic Brahm Kanchbopholta lauded the production for its wide appeal. He commented that during one scene, Malini received a standing ovation.

Hema shoots solo dance scene in Varanasi
By IANS
Jun 18, 2007, 09:10

Mumbai, June 18: Actress Hema Malini is all set to perform a solo dance in a Hindi film after nearly 17 years. This will be for Pradeep Sarkar's upcoming movie, being shot in the Hindu holy city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.

Hema will perform a mujra in the yet untitled film and lip-sync a Thumri sung by director Vishal Bharadwaj's wife Rekha.

"I love the song. And the dance will be Kathak based. That really makes me happy. The last time I performed a solo dance on screen was for Gulzar's 'Lekin'. That was another special appearance for the beautiful mujra 'Jhoote naina bole'. I really enjoyed that ... and I'm really enjoying this," Hema told us.

She loves the dance in Sarkar's film because it has classical elements.

"It's not often that one gets a chance to do something classical in our films these days. That's why I agreed to do it. They told me no on except me could perform the mujra. But I think Rekha would've been a better choice," she says.

The veteran actress will be making a special appearance in the movie by Yashraj Films.

"I did a special appearance for Yashraj Films' 'Veer-Zaara'. I've worked many times with them. When I was asked to do this film I did it without a second thought.

"Though I've come to Varanasi many times for dance performances, the last time I was here for a film was Sohanlal Kanwar's 'Sanyasi' more than 30 years ago."

Hema says dancing is the high point of her life.

"When I perform the Krishna ballet I am at the crest of my happiness. Unfortunately now I have to divide my time among three disciplines - politics, acting and dancing. In fact I've never been busier in my life. I'm enjoying this phase in my life," says Hema.

"My daughters are busy with their own thing. And I've the time to do what I want," she adds.

Television Double trouble

Hema Malini does a Seeta Aur Geeta in Kamini Damini

A battered saas running for cover? The viewer may snort in disbelief but this is the subject of Ravi Chopra’s new TV venture.

Kamini Damini on Mondays to Thursdays on Sahara One at 10 p.m. is a saas bahu saga with a twist. The victim is none other than Hema.

Married to a rich industrialist, Hema aka Kamini’s troubles begin when her daughter-in-law starts tormenting her. She turns to her twin Damini for help. The sisters exchange places and it’s action time as the tables turn in the household.

"The idea of doing a double role was very exciting," says Malini who played a similar double role in Seeta Aur Geeta in 1972 which in turn was a copy of the Dilip Kumar-starrer Ram Aur Shyam.

At an age when many of her contemporaries have retired, life seems to be going at warp speed for the original prima donna of Hindi films. Besides becoming a Member of Parliament, Hema has done two hit cameos opposite Amitabh Bachchan in Baghbaan and Veer Zaara and is now all set to resurrect daughter Esha Deol’s sinking career with a new film Babul

At last there is someone who is all mine and whom I don't have to share

For Hema Malini, her daughter Esha’s birth was the most glorious event of her life. Despite the fact that it was most controversial issue for her husband’s family because of the existence of his first wife Prakash and four grown-up children, the dream girl radiated pride and happiness. And nothing was going to deter her from being happy. “Everybody predicted that I was going to have a son,” she had said. Deep down, she too hoped for a son. “So, I had bought everything for the child in blue and had even done up her nursery in shades of blue.” But when she held her child in her arms the first time, nothing else mattered.

According to the actress the birth of her daughter was the most beautiful experience in her life. There was too much tension at home about the time the baby was born. Because though she had completed nine months, there was no sign of pre-delivery pains! On the night of November 11, her husband Dharamendra had gone for a preview. Although she pestered him to take her with him, he refused, for he felt she was not in a condition to see a film. And as soon as he left, Hema had to be rushed to the hospital.

Since she wasn’t getting the pains the doctors had to induce labour. The one distinct memory during her most agonising pains was a shrill cry. The cry that brought with it, solace and made her a mother. “The first thing I noticed about her was her hair. Unlike me she wasn’t bald. (They say I was a bald baby). I wouldn’t exchange her for any son in this world.” Esha according to the actress is a Sanskrit word, derived from the Upanishads. It means the divine beloved. “Her birth has made me realise how incomplete my existence was before her. There is a sense of belonging. At last there is someone who is all mine and whom I don't have to share...”

Hema Malini on her dream double role in TV?s Kamini-Damini. By Shaikh Ayaz

Years ago, the charming Hema Malini sat beside her ailing screen husband Amitabh Bachchan in the film, Satte Pe Satta (1982). Two decades down the line, Hema recreates the scene. Although this time, it?s not funny, but an intense and serious one. And she isn?t a nurse here, but a housewife. And the man on the hospital bed is Maharabharat?s Karna, Pankaj Dheer, in a new avataar as Hema Malini aka Kamini?s husband.

We are at B.R. Films? studio in Jogeshwari, Mumbai. Hema Malini, looking a good few decades younger than her current age, decides to await the shot being readied from the comforts of her make-up van. The crew is getting everything in place for the hospital scene. And we get the woman who does a Seeta Aur Geeta meets Baghban in Kamini-Damini on the small screen.

The actress smiles at the comparison. ?It is like, both Seeta and Geeta have grown with age and are in the present age group of mother of three, what would be the story of their lives. Do not expect Damini to jump on top of ceiling fans like Geeta,? she warns.

While we talk to her, we realise that white seems to be the colour of the day, as beside the entire hospital staff, even Hema is seen in a pristine-clean white sari. Cut to the shot. Hema Malini transforms herself into a caring wife, as she nurses husband Pankaj Dheer. ?It is an intense scene. Kamini?s husband is not well, and the police is here to interrogate him. They allege that he is involved in a criminal activity, but Kamini knows that he cannot do such a thing,? explains the actress.

Director Ravi Chopra instructing the next scene, where Hema has to answer the police on behalf of Pankaj. The scene is okayed easily. The unit members take a breather. As always, Chopra is affable when approached. ?Kamini-Damini has been a difficult project for me, not only because I had the responsibility of extracting the best out of Hemaji, an accomplished artiste herself, but also because the entire cast is so talented that you have to literally give your best, no less would do,? says Chopra, admitting that he still gets nervous when calling the shots on Hema.

Meanwhile, Kamini-Damini has been on air for quite some time. So how has the response to the serial been? ?Quite positive,? promptly replies Chopra. ?We are glad that people have loved Kamini-Damini. The show is set in a format where the characters are very strong. The audience response is an encouraging beginning for us.?

The journey from Dream Girl to devotee

BACK in the seventies she was the original Dream Girl who set hearts afire with her looks, her performances and her dances.

A quarter of a century later, today, Hema Malini is out to wow viewers once again. But this time on television. In fact ever since she decided to act in serials there has been a veritable queue of producers trying to make her sign on the dotted line.

But, she says, "I am not doing TV for a living. I want to concentrate on a few quality roles. One of my favourite roles is in Jai Mata Di. I am really blessed to have be doing it. It’s not acting, it’s bhakti."

As if to prove how enamoured she is of the role, she recently gave a stunning dance performance on the banks of River Ganges at the Triveni Ghat at Rishikesh. The three-hour-long programme which had Hema dancing in various reincarnations of Goddess Durga regaled over 30,000 people who cheered her on heartily and she had to give encore after encore.

"It’s amazing how mom can still hold an audience breathless," was all that daughter Esha could utter in wide-eyed astonishment.

Hema Malini was the second South Indian actress after Vyjayantimala to be a major Hindi film star. At her peak she wielded such strong commercial clout that actors like Dev Anand and Rajesh Khanna had to turn to her to give them that much wanted hit. When Dev Anand's films in the 70s particularly those with Zeenat Aman crashed, Amir Garib (1974) with Hema Malini was a hit. When Rajesh Khanna's films started sinking, her Prem Nagar(1974) with him gave him a new lease of life albeit temporarily.

Ironically her career almost ended before it began. Her first director Shridhar threw her out of a Tamil film he was directing in 1964, saying she had no star appeal! Hema resolved she would make it big where it mattered the most - Bollywood.

She began her career opposite Raj Kapoor in Sapnon ka Saudagar (1968) where the posters splashed her picture with the catch phrase - 'Dreamgirl.' The film flopped but Hema survived. With Johnny Mera Naam (1970), Hema became a top star and with Seeta aur Geeta (1972) she was the top female star in Bollywood. A string of successful films particularly opposite Dharmendra (Raja Jani (1972), Jugnu (1973), Sholay (1975)) followed as Hema's stock only went higher and higher.

Though Critics have dismissed her as a one-note actress, to be fair to her she did occasionally show that she could give a performance of some depth were she directed properly. As Raj Kumar's scheming mistress in Lal Pathar (1971) she not only made the audience empathize with her negative character but also stole a march over no less an actress than Rakhee! She dared to play a young widow in Andaaz (1971), a role turned down by most actresses. She tried to change her glamorous image by working with Gulzar and did some of her best and perhaps most introspective work in his films - Khushboo (1975), Kinara (1977) and Meera (1979).

Both Jeetendra and Sanjeev Kumar proposed marriage to her but it was Dharmendra who wooed and won her. She flouted convention by becoming his second wife and having children by him but so strong was her morally upright image that she was able to go through the marriage without being slandered by press or public.

By the early to mid 80s her reign was coming to an end. She concentrated on her dance performances and turned to playing strong characters with feminist undertones on both film and TV in fact giving a finely modulated performance in Rihaee (1988) as a woman who has an affair when her husband is away and has another man's child.

She has dabbled in other channels of film production having produced Swami (1977), Sharara (1984), Aawargi (1987) and Marg (1992 but unreleased) besides directing Dil Aashna Hai (1991) and Mohini (1994) for Television. She is still seen in the occasional film (Hey Ram (2000)) but she is content today to see elder daughter Esha try to make her mark as an actress. She has also directed TV serials Noopur (1990) and Women of India (1996). Hema Malini was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1999 for her contribution to Indian Cinema.
