Quotes from Armaan (Invision)
When Reena announced her plans to marry a Pakistani cricketer 1983, the media was generally very supportive. India-Pakistan relations at the time were generally good, and Reena played on her "Muslim" heritage so it didn't look like a Hindu-Muslim marriage. Previously Reena had kept quite about her father, but at the time of her marriage, she declared her father as a deceased Pakistani Muslim. According to several interviews her Muslim name was Saira Khan later changed to Roopa Rai by her Hindu mother and finally changed to Reena Roy by B R Ishara when she joined films. The Hindu fundalmentalist may have reacted differently if Reena was a "pure" Hindu marrying a Muslim, especially a Pakistani one. Although there was virtually no negative publicity with regard to her marriage to a Pakistani, in subsequent years her image deterioriated in the eye of the Indian public and film industry. The fact that her overwhelming contribution to Bollywood is virtually ignored now could be the result of her perceived disloyalty to India. If she had not left India to marry a Pakistani, maybe her image as a quality yesteryear heroine would have been consolidated by the Indian public, media and film industry. The situation with Mohsin Khan has been different. Apparently he received several death threats from Shiv Sena style Hindu fanatics when he joined films, and this had put great strain on his marriage to Reena Roy. His disappointing career in Bollywood and his failed marriage to Reena Roy, could partly be a result of such racism. There has been so many interviews about Reena's separation and divorce, but none have really given any clear insight into what went wrong with their marriage. I think there is no question that Reena's loyalty are with India and she is a Hindu by heart like her maternal family. The Muslim men in her life have been a disappointment (father and husband). She is always wearing a huge "Bindi/Tikka/Tilak" to symbolise her Hindu-ness Quotes: Armaan "Wow living in India could be problems for lovers" of different faith: maybe they could have learn't a thing or two from SRK and Gauri. . |

Today a member of the Indian parliament: The actress blames Sonia Gandhi for her deciding to give politics a shot. “I’ve known the Gandhi family pretty well and Soniaji was aware of that. Two months back, she asked if I could join her campaign. She wanted somebody who by Morparia had seen life, lived through problems and emerged stronger. I guess I fitted the image,” she says, with a twinkle in her eye. Today, Sonia Gandhi and Reena Roy share a wonderful rapport and the actress can’t stop gushing about her ‘friend’. “I have great respect and admiration for that lady. People are mean and keep taking pot-shots at her. She’s Italian alright, but how can these people forget that she stayed in India, even after her husband’s death. She could have led a cushy life anywhere, but chose to stay here and fight,” Reena says. |
