Reena Roy's career in films started off inauspiciously with B. R. Ishara's "Nayi Duniya Naye Log" with another newcomer Danny Denzongpa, but it was shelved temporarily. Undeterred, B. R. Ishara cast both actors again in "Zaroorat" (1972) along with another newcomer Vijay Arora, and the racy film got her some attention. She was now called the "Zaroorat Girl." Yet, she struggled for the next four years in B films that had feeble scripts and faltering leading men. The bright spot during this period came with her lively performance in Jaise Ko Taisa (1973), and her rain-soaked dance to the song "Ab ke Sawan" with Jeetendra raised temperatures.

Reena Roy - the beautiful and talented actress of the 1970s reigned amongst the Top Five heroines of Bollywood Cinema for more than a decade. She shot to fame in Raj Kumar Kohli's Nagin and reached the zenith of her stardom by the early 1980s with her heart-stirring performance in J Om Prakash's Aasha. . |

She had to wait two more years for another break. At the outset "Kalicharan" (1975) didn't seem like it had the makings of a hit. Subhash Ghai, a failed actor, was making his directorial debut, and Shatrughan Sinha, an actor known for his villainous roles, was making his first mark as a hero. But the film defied everyone's expectations and became a surprise hit, and Reena as Shatrugan's love interest got attention from audiences and from Shatrughan himself. They became an off-screen pair as well, and they signed several films together. Reena Roy also made several films with Sunil Dutt. The successes of "Zakhmee" (1975) and "Kalicharan" led to her star vehicle Nagin (1976). Playing the title role of "female snake with mythological powers", she avenges the death of her lover by ruthlessly murdering five men. The film became a huge hit, and Reena received her first Filmfare nomination as Best Actress. She was now one of the top heroines in Hindi films. Inspired by "Nagin"'s success, director, Rajkumar Kohli, cast Reena again in his next star-studded horror movie, Jaani Dushman (1979). Thereafter, the Kohli-Roy combination continued to give Bollywood cinema some its greatest multi-starrer blockbusters, including Muqabla (1979), Badle Ki Aag (1982), and Raaj Tilak (1984). Reena Roy-Shatrughan Sinha became a famous team after "Kalicharan," and had delivered yet another blockbuster thriller, Subhash Ghai's Vishwanath (1978). But it was Reena's chemistry with Jeetendra in marital dramas like Badaltey Rishtey (1978) and Pyaasa Sawan]] (1982) that set her career soaring. The duo produced three of their greatest classics together - Apnapan (1977), Aasha (1980) and Arpan (1983). . |

Reena Roy's poignant dance in Aasha to the melody of "Shisha Ho Yah Dil Ho" immortalized her as an icon of desire and tragedy. Her dark-shaded role in "Apnapan," as the selfish gold-digger who abandons her husband and child and later wanting them back, won her the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award, beating out icons Nutan and Asha Parekh. (This was the precursor to the type of role that Meryl Streep played two years later in Kramer vs. Kramer (1979)). As legend has it, Reena supposedly rejected the Award on basis that she is the heroine of the film, not the supporting actress! And finally, her screen image as a sacrificing symbol of Indian womanhood is glorified in the very popular, "Arpan." . |

After the box office success of "Aasha," for which she received her second Filmfare nomination as Best Actress, Reena entered the 1980's as a leading lady in demand, securing herself critical roles with phenomenal superstars like Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, and Vinod Khanna. She was the defiant widow who reforms the egotistical Rajesh Khanna of Dhanwan (1981); the beautiful actress who dies on stage performing her last 'mujra' for Dharmendra in Naukar Biwi Ka (1983); and the talented psychiatrist determined to cure Vinod Khanna in the comical, Jail Yatra (1981). Top directors like Prakash Mehra, Raj Khosla and Sultan Ahmad grabbed her for quality roles. Manmohan Desai's grand extravaganza, Naseeb (1981) gave her the chance to steal scenes from the legendary Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, and of course, Shatrughan Sinha. Her off-screen relationship with Shatrughan ended as he maarried a non-actress named Poonam in 1981. . |

Reena Roy now concentrated on her career, as she was providing Hema Malini and Rekha stiff competition for the No. 1 position by the early 1980s. In 1982 alone, she had thirteen releases, by far more than any other star. She was now demanding equal footing with Hema, and effectively stealing the thunder from Rekha in emotional melodramas like Prem Tapasya (1983) and Asha Jyoti (1984). Her characters became more versatile, as did her dances. She effortlessly danced the classical 'natyam' in "Rocky" (1981)), just as easily as the "Disco Station" number in "Hathkadi" (1982). She was the sophisticated model in Karishmaa (1984) who was equally seductive as the village belle in Dharam Kanta (1982). She met the challenging demands of her extraordinary double role in the Muslim social, Ladies Tailor (1981), and held her own opposite the talented Sanjeev Kumar. . |

At the pinnacle of her popularity, Reena's strong desire to prove herself got her involved in a number of women-oriented films. Enacting the role of a tormented daughter-in-law in "Sau Din Saas Ke" (1980), she defies conventions to oppose her tyrant mother-in-law. With an author-backed role in Bezubaan (1982), she gave a realistic portrayal of a woman whose past returns to threaten her present married life. But it was "Lakshmi" (1982) that glorified the presence of Reena Roy in Bollywood cinema. Playing the role of a misfortunate tawaif, she dances to her never-ending tragedies. However, the film failed at the box office. But she found comfort in the sensational success of her other home production - the musical comedy, Sanam Teri Kasam (1982), opposite Kamal Hassan and produced by her sister Barkha Roy. . |

In 1983-at the height of her fame-Reena Roy decided to quit films to marry Pakistani cricketer, Mohsin Khan. Her last shooting was for a tragedy "Inteha" (1984), in which she is raped and tormented by Raj Babbar. The film didn't do well. One of Reena's last releases was J.P. Dutta's war-torn Ghulami (1985). Her husband tried to become a film star in Bollywood but failed, as did the marriage to Reena. She initially lost custody of her daughter Sanam[1] in the divorce. However, after her ex-husband remarried a younger woman who didn't want to raise a child, Reena regained custody . |

Reena returned to Bollywood in 1992. In a supporting role as a sister-in-law ('bhabhi'), Aadmi Khilona Hai (1993) greeted the arrival of the mature Reena Roy. Her unhappiness showed in her significant weight gain. And the insignificant roles that were to follow proved even to her die-hard fans that Reena's film career came to an end[3]. Her last film appearance was in J.P Dutta's Refugee (2000). She has since turned to acting in television serials, such as "Eena Meena Deeka," produced by her sister Barkha. After the serial ended, both sisters opened an acting school together in 2004. Reena also has campaigned for the Indian National Congress. . |

Reena Roy: I'm tired of 'acting' Reena's decision to quit films in 1983 to marry Pakistani cricketer Mohsin Khan is the cover story of film magazines. "The Gods have a soft corner for her. There's no other reason why she should be where she is. During the making of her very first film, Zaroorat, the director, B Aar Ishara, considered dumping her every time she muffed a dialogue, which was very often. But when the film was released, she was still very much there. The heroine of Ishara's earlier film, Rehana Sultan, got stuck with the camera as Peeping-Tom movies, and gradually faded from the scene. But Reena thrived, and clambered up to be among the chart-toppers - where she is now. Rather, she was, because now she's decided to quit films, and marry Mohsin Khan, Pak cricketer of international fame, for whom she has a soft corner..." . |

Savage Tale of Love... The pain and the pleasure of the Reena-Shatrughan Sinha affair. "My relationship with Reena was intense, pious and personal. People said after my marriage that Reena's feeling for me had changed. In fact, it grew more intense. I am grateful that she gave me her company for seven years." - Shatru "I prayed and wished that Shatru would at least marry my daughter and make her his second wife. He did not love her and had been just fooling around with her. Reena told me it was love. I told her it was a mistake." - Reena's mother "The truth is that I did step aside and gave Reena a clear field, but Shatru didn't want to marry a girl whose fidelity was in doubt. I was aware that they revived their old romance after our marriage." - Shatru's wife |

It was at the acme of her film career when Mohsin Khan happened. She left industry to stay with him in Pakistan. But soon the couple realised that they were not made for each other. The embattled couple tried their best to save the marriage. But the apocalyptic matrimony not only saw a sad ending, but also took away the careers of both its protagonists. The marriage ended. Reena had lost her status in Bollywood and Khan was given the boot from ˜Team Pakistan'. The law bequeathed the custody of the girl child to the father. Smitten by the harsh realities, Reena again made an attempt at resurrection. The strong currents of time had left her psyche battered and bruised. Her every venture to evoke the charisma of yesteryears met with failure. Later she consciously went away from the spotlight. It was like seeking a voluntary retirement from a profession, where sometimes you walk, with work in your hands to your grave. |

AS SHE APPEARS IN SAU DIN SAAS KE Widowed Bhavanidevi rules her palatial home with an iron hand. Nothing is permitted to be touched or moved without her permission and approval. She has two sons, and one daughter. She dotes on her daughter, Shobha, and son-in-law, Khubchand. When her eldest son marries a young woman, Sheela, Bhavani is enraged because Sheela did not bring in enough dowry. To teach Sheela a lesson, she burns her foot, leaving a petrified Sheela submissive and open to even more abuse. When Bhavani's second son gets married without her permission, she is angered even more, and will not have anything to do with her new daughter-in-law, Durga. When Durga insists on living there, she is permitted to do so, not knowing that she has now entered a household where she will be another abused and submissive slave to her dominating mother-in-law |

Quotes from Armaan (Invision)
When Reena announced her plans to marry a Pakistani cricketer 1983, the media was generally very supportive. India-Pakistan relations at the time were generally good, and Reena played on her "Muslim" heritage so it didn't look like a Hindu-Muslim marriage. Previously Reena had kept quite about her father, but at the time of her marriage, she declared her father as a deceased Pakistani Muslim. According to several interviews her Muslim name was Saira Khan later changed to Roopa Rai by her Hindu mother and finally changed to Reena Roy by B R Ishara when she joined films. The Hindu fundalmentalist may have reacted differently if Reena was a "pure" Hindu marrying a Muslim, especially a Pakistani one. Although there was virtually no negative publicity with regard to her marriage to a Pakistani, in subsequent years her image deterioriated in the eye of the Indian public and film industry. The fact that her overwhelming contribution to Bollywood is virtually ignored now could be the result of her perceived disloyalty to India. If she had not left India to marry a Pakistani, maybe her image as a quality yesteryear heroine would have been consolidated by the Indian public, media and film industry. The situation with Mohsin Khan has been different. Apparently he received several death threats from Shiv Sena style Hindu fanatics when he joined films, and this had put great strain on his marriage to Reena Roy. His disappointing career in Bollywood and his failed marriage to Reena Roy, could partly be a result of such racism. There has been so many interviews about Reena's separation and divorce, but none have really given any clear insight into what went wrong with their marriage. I think there is no question that Reena's loyalty are with India and she is a Hindu by heart like her maternal family. The Muslim men in her life have been a disappointment (father and husband). She is always wearing a huge "Bindi/Tikka/Tilak" to symbolise her Hindu-ness Quotes: Armaan "Wow living in India could be problems for lovers" of different faith: maybe they could have learn't a thing or two from SRK and Gauri. . |

Today a member of the Indian parliament: The actress blames Sonia Gandhi for her deciding to give politics a shot. "I've known the Gandhi family pretty well and Soniaji was aware of that. Two months back, she asked if I could join her campaign. She wanted somebody who by Morparia had seen life, lived through problems and emerged stronger. I guess I fitted the image," she says, with a twinkle in her eye. Today, Sonia Gandhi and Reena Roy share a wonderful rapport and the actress can't stop gushing about her ˜friend'. "I have great respect and admiration for that lady. People are mean and keep taking pot-shots at her. She's Italian alright, but how can these people forget that she stayed in India, even after her husband's death. She could have led a cushy life anywhere, but chose to stay here and fight," Reena says. |

Headliner of the Decade: Reena Roy's Marriage Tamasha! Several months before her imminent public announcement there were intense speculations of Reena's marriage plans in film magazines. Heroines have married and quit the industry at an hour's, month's, or year's notice before. But the only difference between their announcements and the one made by Reena Roy was that while the others openly declared the names of their future husbands, Reena played mysterious.... Producers were sent notices to complete her films before the end of the year. Her boyfriend of six years Shatrughan Sinha was told that his relationship with Reena had ended. Her family was asked to learn to fend for themselves since their goose would not lay golden eggs for them anymore. Reena Roy was obviously tired of being made a sucker.... . |

An estranged father, cabaret past, hazaar men...! Reena and Barkha clean their slates before they settle down in matrimony! When Reena Roy entered the film industry, her past was not something she could or would boast about. Controversy, conflict and criticism confronted her at every step and she was called every kind of uncomplimentary name, insecurities were poured all over her background and question marks were applied to every action. In this article Reena denies rumours about her 'cabaret dancer' past, but her mother Sharda Roy confessed in an earlier interview: "It is true that Reena danced in hotels to feed us when we were poor, but I never asked her to do that. In fact I never approved of my daughter joining films." . |

REENA ROY: GLAMOUR QUEEN OF YESTERYEAR:
Reena-Mohsin: Living and Loving Reena and Mohsin reflect on their happily married life. Many years ago, a garish, uncouth girl had come thumping her way into films. She desperately wanted to make it as an actress. The directors snubbed her. The actors made fun of her. The heroines laughed at her. Yet, she made it. And, she made it big! In time Reena officially made it to the number 3 position, and filmmakers and distributors public acknowledged her as a worthy candidate for the higher places with Hema Malini and Zeenat Aman. But all this success didn't matter to Reena. She had a fairy tale fantasy of living the life of a princess, and thought she had met her prince charming when she married Mohsin Khan. They happily lived together for several years and this article gives a perceptive insight into their mutual attraction. . |

REENA ROY: GLAMOUR QUEEN OF YESTERYEAR:
REENA AND MOSHIN: Theirs was without any doubt the much-talked about marriage (taken place in early eighties) since the guy was a very famous super cricketer of Pakistani cricket team and the gal a coveted mega actress of Hindi film industry. When their love affair oozed out and they started dating, the gossip mill had begun to buzz in the Bollywood fraternity, in the media around the globe, amongst the Pakistani cricket team and the masses. Whenever the Pakistani team went to India to play matches, the gorgeous dusky actress would go to stadium to see her dashing hero playing the shots. Even Reena did not miss any chance to see the live matches of Mohsin Khan in other corners of the world. The same happened with the Oval hero, as he was also found on the sets and on the roads of Bombay to meet his girlfriend. This was a mad love between the two, which took both to tie the knot finally without caring about the boundaries of the two countries (as they rightly say, ‘Love sees no boundaries’. Nobody in the industry believed that Reena would eventually settle down. Prior to meeting Mohsin, she was madly in love with the Banarsi Babo Shatrughan Sinha. Besides, Roy was also on a constant see-saw, now-on and now-off relationships with other men. Reena wanted marriage but Shatru was unable to make up his mind since he was already married to his childhood sweetheart Poonam. He was dilly-dallying between the two ladies whom he met daily – one on the sets and the other at home. Sinha’s shaky mind dragged Reena to another man, Rajnesh from whom she did also not find any happiness, utter love and piece of mind. She was deeply in a low phase, when the charming Khan came into her life. The chocolate looking macho Bollywood hero Vinod Khanna helped her get out of this low phase and Jaya Bachchan encouraged Reena to say ‘yes’ to Mohsin Khan’s marriage proposal. The moment Reena decided to become Mohsin’s bride, she did not leave any stone unturned to play the perfect bahu begum of Pakistan. She started to support the Pakistani team. Every time there was an India-Pakistan match where Indian team did better, the whole film industry would tease Reena saying, ‘Jal Gayi Reena Roy’. In May, 1980, in an interview to the media, Reena Roy expressed her desire to get married and leave the film fraternity (as her lover boy had stepped into her life by now, but it was too early to make up her mind for him). She said, “I don’t know why, but I am suddenly beginning to resent work these days. I think I’m tired. Half of my time goes in traveling to the studios and the other half in waiting endlessly for my shot. I am fed up with costumes, wigs, make up and all that. I think I need to settle down. I wish some Prince Charming would come galloping my way. The day he does, I will get married and go away like Mumtaz. Never to return to the archlights again.” Three years later, when she was in London to attend the Amitabh Bachchan show, their love boomed and soared sky high. Mohsin Khan took the flight to London to spend the leisure time with his princess. Every evening, Mohsin Khan called her up at her hotel, where she was staying, and asked her to be ready. He picked her up in his car and took her for long drives. They talked for long hours. Mohsin told her about his game, his ambitions and his future. Reena listened him and enjoyed his talking thoroughly. She, on the other hand, expressed about her flagging interest in her profession, her dilemma and her growing insecurities. Both also discussed their parents, their families and friends. Slowly but surely, the strong love relationship was cemented between the two. Back home, in India, Reena began to think often of Mohsin, started missing him a lot. She confessed to herself and then to her close friend Jaya Bachchan that she was deeply in love with the super Pakistani cricketing hero. But the problem was that she was unable to decide what to do..! Jaya, being a good friend, made Reena conscious of her own identity and the need to find real happiness for herself. She asked Reena to put aside her doubts about her family, her career, about Shatrughan Sinha and helped her make a decision for her prosperous future and happiness in life. Therefore Jaya gave the positive signal to wed to Mohsin Khan, as Reena was unable to live without the guy and her world was lying with the charming Moshin Hassan Khan. Reena knew Moshin for more than six years. Besides, he was talented, successful, much famous across the globe and very rich. Hence there appeared no problem at all for the beautiful renowned actress of Bollywood to spend the rest of her life with the popular dashing Khan. On the other hand, she too had played long innings in the film industry and earned pretty good fame and money, as she was there for the last ten years. But now she was tired of acting and the futile relationships, she had gone through earlier. There was a vacuum in her life and above all, the age for marriage was growing also. So, she decided to be the life partner of her dream man, Moshin Khan. Finally, the wedding took place on 1st April, 1983 and Reena left for her new home in Karachi, Pakistan. Years later, when Moshin Khan said good bye to the national cricket team due to his clashes with the cricket board, he settled with his wife Reena Roy in Bombay and tried his luck in Hindi cinema. But as the fact is crystal clear that the cricketers can hit sixes only in playgrounds not on celluloid, he too flopped at Bollywood front doing few films in a few years like his counterpart Sandeep Patel (the debonair batsman of Indian cricket team), who made his debut in films opposite with Poonam Dhillon in ‘Kabhi Ajnabi Thay’ and did some films after that and went back to home. Reena did not return to filmdom, though her hubby was doing movies, instead she preferred to be a housewife looking after her baby girl, Jannat. All Reena and Mohsin want is a happy married life being lovers always. But destiny had something else in store for them. The clashes started to emerge between the lovers and some years later, they parted their ways. Mohsin gave divorce to Reena and returned to his home, Pakistan. Khan joined Lollywood (Pakistani film industry) and did many films but again he had to face bad luck on movies front. Today he is a successful commentator of cricket and coaches the young aspiring cricketers. Reena Roy, after being divorced, returned to archlights but failed in both the entertaining worlds – films and television being the leading actress of the past. When they divorced, Mohsin Khan got the custody of the daughter but when he re-married, Reena Roy got her back with the help of the law. Today, Jannat lives with Reena Roy. Once the mad lovers, today they both hesitate and do not like to talk about each other. - Written By: Goher Iqbal Punn . |

REENA ROY: GLAMOUR QUEEN OF YESTERYEAR:
When some of her friends in Bombay realized her plight, they asked her to come back to Bombay, but were shocked to see this new Reena. She had put on kilos of weight and her face could hardly be recognized. In one of her first talks after coming to Bombay she said "I am responsible for all that has happened to me. I am responsible for all the mistakes I have made. People have misused me and betrayed me but I am not going to give up my struggle. I still feel I have the love of the people and God on my side. I am not going to cry over what has happened in my life. I will still look forward for better future." Reena now tried to find work again, but it was impossible to find the same roles she once found. She tried to loose weight to find work but all she could find were a few serials which were also not the best and she stopped working all together. She turned to politics and campaigned for the Congress party during the elections in 2004. Reena Roy who could have been a queen is now a story from the past and lives the life of a recluse with her sister, Barkhaa Roy in Pam Villa, her house in which one has to go all around and sometimes wait for hours to catch a glimpse of a woman who is a victim of the unexpected and uncertain steps in the great dance of life. |
