Ranbir and Imran host Filmfare Awards

The Filmfare Awards this year will see a younger and fresher set of actors hosting the event. For years Shah Rukh had almost monopolized the hosting with Saif Ali Khan. The two though were witty and never shied away from lampooning the film fraternity to entertain their audience.

This year the Khan duo has been replaced by dapper Ranbir Kapoor and handsome Imran Khan as the official host for the popular awards.

Though earlier, like previous years, Shah Rukh was slated to host the awards on Feb 28, but due to his shoulder surgery there was buzz about the awards being postponed to March 7 so that he could still host them.

Apparently there's has been a sudden change of decision and instead of Baadshah Khan it'll be two newcomers who will be hosting the awards on the pre-scheduled date.

Going by Ranbir and Imran's record last year, both actors have been immensely popular for their good looks and acting skills. While Ranbir Kapoor swept off his women fans with his hot bod act and dancing skills in Bachana Ae Haseeno, Imran's fresh face and boy-next-door image in Jaane Tu Jaane Na worked wonders with the female audiences, making both the stars hot property.

According to sources the two good friends are already rehearsing a comic script to add humour and wit apart from upping the glamour quotient of the evening. Besides these two, Karan Johar and Farhan Akhtar will also be hosting a part for the event.

Things that we do not agree with Filmfare Awards 2009:

1. A Wednesday did not get a single award at Filmfare Awards 2009, in spite of being the most under-rated movie that stood out all guns. Most would agree that A Wednesday deserved awards for the best script(this was really an original story), best dialogue and best actor in a critics's role to Naseeruddin Shah.

2. Paresh Rawal has arguably given his career best performance in Mumbai Meri Jaan. Sad that he was even nominated!

3. Why has Filmfare scrapped the 'Best Actor/Actress in Comic Role'? What if you have someone excelling in a tragic or serious role, and the other doing absolutely amazing in a comic role? Shoudn't the actor playing comedy deserve better? People like Rajpal Yadav, Paresh Rawal will be side-lined if they scrape the comic role awards. This year, Abhishek Bachchan had a chance to win for his funny act in Dostana.

4. The best male singer awards which went to Sukhvinder for 'Haule Haule' is a suspect. Songs like 'Zara Si" from K.K for Jannat, Pehli Nazar from Atif Aslam for Race and 'Kabhi Kabhi Aditi' from Rashid Ali for Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na were far more popular in terms of music and singing. May be Sukhvinder won it as a consolation because he missed going to the Oscars. Let us honor him here instead, if he couldn't go to Hollywood, isn't it?

5. Hrithik Roshan's was a critically acclaimed role, not a popular one. He should have got the Best Actor critics award. In the popularity polls for best actor of 2008, 44 percent voted for Shahrukh Khan, 41 percent for Aamir Khan and just 8 percent for Hrithik Roshan. It goes without question that popular performances were of SRK(Rab Ne) and Aamir Khan(Ghajini). Both of them saved the industry from incurring huge losses at recession. It is useless giving awards to Aamir Khan because he cares a fig for these awards. You can't give it to SRK every year, so it is better to give Hrithik the best actor (popular) award.

A memorable evening: Asin

Asin has bagged the prestigious Filmfare Award for the Best Sensational Debut (Female) at the 54th Filmfare Award night that took place in Mumbai on Saturday (February 28) night.

Asin whose Ghajini has turned out to be the biggest blockbuster of all times is the babe from South, who has taken Bollywood by storm with her debut film. Asin maybe a new face to Bollywood but for the south and Sify.com, she remains the down to earth gal, the queen of Tamil cinema who left her throne to follow her Bollywood dreams. After winning the Filmfare award, she spoke exclusively to us

What did you feel when you were nominated for the Best actress with top actresses in Hindi cinema?
It was wonderful to be nominated in Best actress category with actresses like Aishwarya Rai, Kajol and Priyanka whom I have been watching since my school days. Two nominations and one award it’s a warm welcome from the Bollywood industry and the audiences.

So what was your state of mind when your name was announced?
In a way it was a reversal of timelines. The last two times I was holding this black lady was when I won her for Best actress- Ghajini in Tamil and Amma Nanna O Tamil Ammai in Telugu. Andtoday getting it for best debutant was weird in a way but fun and refreshing.

What was the best compliment that you got after winning the award?
Well, (smiles) everyone came up and congratulated me either on back stage or at the party afterwards. I was so overwhelmed when Aishwarya, Abhishek, Preity, Sushmita, Zoya Khan and others welcomed me warmly into the Hindi film industry.

But the icing on the cake was when Amitabh Bachchan ji congratulated me and told me that even if he did not get the chance to watch Ghajini, he has heard so much about my performance. I was speechless and consider it as a compliment I will treasure forever.

You looked stunning at the awards? We loved your outfit and the clutch that you were carrying?
(Smiles) It’s nice to hear that. I was wearing a Diane Von Furstenberg dress and it was a Bottega Veneta Clutch. My accessories were from Anmol.

On the whole it was a memorable evening. Please comment?
I can’t ask for more. It is my third Filmfare award. All the kids from Slumdog Millionaire were eager to click pictures with me after the function. They sweetly came up and congratulated and said we love to see you more on screen.

On the whole, it was the coolest award night (laughs) like Preity said because of the air conditionoing blast in the studio and we all were freezing.

Asin has a lot of Plans!

The pretty Asin could do with some beauty sleep.

Post-Ghajini, the actress hasn’t been able to rest much. It’s no surprise that everyone wants a bit of her success pie. “Forgive me if I sound low, but I have been sleeping two to three hours and running from one shoot to another,” explains Asin, as we catch up after another exhausting shoot. Sleep apart, Asin has no complaints. After playing the girl-next-door in Ghajini, the South actress gets to glam it up in her next movie London Dreams. And to add to it she gets to star opposite another Khan — Salman — in this one! So, which Khan does she prefer? “You can’t expect me to choose between them. That’s not fair, both are legends,” she exclaims adding, “You can’t compare them. They are poles apart and yet similar. The common factor is that they are both genuine people.” And yes, SRK is on her wishlist too. “He seems to be a very charming person. I hope something comes up soon,” she prays.

It’s been a year now that Asin has moved to Mumbai from Kerala. Moving to Bollywood was a natural step for the 23-year-old. “It wasn’t a planned move. Ghajini was being remade and since I had worked in the original I was offered the remake. Everything else was a big bonus,” she smiles.

Though her first movie has brought her a lot of accolades, she also had to face some nasty rumours. So, is she ready for the fireworks? “I am never ready for rumours! The best way to deal with them is to ignore them. We are a small family and my father looks after my career. He is always with me, so they know whatever I am upto,” she shrugs. And what about the alleged catfight with Jiah Khan? “Our portions were shot entirely at different times. We came together only for one scene and even then we got along like a house on fire. When I got to hear of the rumours I was surprised and I am sure so was Jiah,” she says.

Ask her to describe herself and she says, “I know it sounds a bit corny, but I would say I am sugar, spice and everything nice.” And yes, she’s absolutely single too. “At the moment, the only man in my life is my dad,” she laughs.

A week after the Oscars, it was time for India to host her own award show. The 54h Idea Filmfare Awards took place at Yash Raj Studios on February 28, and the who's who of Bollywood turned up.

Shriya Saran looked hot in a grey off-shoulder number.

Filmfare awards have become more organised: Javed Akhtar

Mumbai, Javed Akhtar, who won the best lyricist Filmfare award for a song in 'Jodhaa Akbar', says this year's award function was more organised and sophisticated. He was also all praise for the hosts - Imran Khan and Ranbir Kapoor.

“This is my seventh Filmfare award for lyrics and overall my fifteenth Filmfare award… Is it a record? I don't know. A.R. Rahman has won 24 Filmfare trophies. Gulzar saab has also got plenty,” Akhtar, who won the Filmfare award for the song 'Kehne ko jashn-e-bahara hai' Saturday, told us.

Having said that Akhtar thinks this was the best Filmfare award function ever.

“By making it a private rather than a public function, Filmfare Awards have become far more organised and pleasurable. The 'bheed-bhaad' is gone. There's sophistication and peace.”

Akhtar is all praise for the co-hosts.

“Imran Khan and Ranbir Kapoor were simply brilliant. Their bantering was extremely humorous and not offensive at all to anyone,” he said.

Among the award winners' speeches Akhtar liked Priyanka Chopra the best.

“I told her she should get another award for her speech. She was so gracious to the other nominees. Her best comment was that after 'Dostana' her father won't mind if she brings a girl home. One feels so proud of the younger generation. I feel happy and embarrassed to be getting awards along with my own children,” he said.

What makes this triumph special for the lyricist, who is known to use simple and accessible words, is the fact that he has used relatively high-flown lyrics this time.

“Yes, that's true. 'Jashn-e-bahara' is not my regular style. The film required the use of a different kind of words. We can't use contemporary for a Mughal costume drama.

'I remember, I used to be very close to (the legendary lyricist) Sahir Ludhianvi. At that time I knew nothing about shayari (poetry). But in his songs I'd encounter many unfamiliar words.

'He explained to me, 'Look it isn't necessary for people to follow both lines. If they can understand the first line, they can instinctively follow the second. But if listeners can't follow both lines then the song is in trouble'.'
