Mallika Sherawat (born October 24, 1982, as Reema Lamba in Rohtak, Haryana, India) is an Indian actress and model. She has a degree in philosophy from Miranda House, Delhi University.
Sherawat's birth name is Reema Lamba; she adopted the screen name of "Mallika", meaning "queen", to avoid confusion with other actresses named Reema. "Sherawat" is her mother's maiden name. . This message has been edited. Last edited by: asj, |

Luscious, could not agree more with you Krish,
Mallika became popular for her show of skin and several kisses in her movie Khwahish (2003) which was, by Indian standards quite scandalous, as it featured seventeen on-screen kisses. Later that year, she starred in Murder, again a film that raised eyebrows, since she showed a lot of skin. She was nominated in the 'Best Actress' category in the Zee Cine Awards, for her part in Murder. She has also been in the news for an appearance in a Jackie Chan film, The Myth, in which she plays the daughter of a martial arts veteran. She appeared at the Cannes film festival as part of the publicity for the film. Time Magazine film critic Richard Corliss, on meeting Sherawat at Cannes, described her as "a young woman, so gorgeous , curvaceous and genial, and so open in her ambition to be the next big thing, that she surely will be. Striding down the Croisette, making the paparazzi pop their bulbs, Sherawat summoned old-timers' memories of a festival 50 years ago, when the vision of the young Brigitte Bardot on the beach first sold the the world on the notion of this Riviera resort as the home for unbuttoned movie glamour. The movies may have grown more dour, but the stars still make it smile. As Cannes was, so Cannes is." In July 2004, the Bollywood film producers' union IMPAA temporarily blacklisted Mallika. Filmmaker Ramesh Sharma complained that she had committed a breach of contract when she failed to turn up, as promised, for the filming of Kab Kyun Kahan (started in 1999). Mallika, who has earned her reputation by shocking the Indian middle class, was the first Indian woman rumoured to get an offer to pose nude for Playboy magazine. But later playboy magazine denied to have made such an offer. . |

Mallika Sherawat literally exploded on the Indian screen in 2003 in the groundbreaking film Khwahish and created history by opening the doors to kissing in the Indian cinema and has gone on to become the original Bollywood Bombshell. She went on to star in "Murder", the biggest box office success of 2004, which again broke new ground in the depiction of extra-marital affairs.
After having graced every cover from Cosmopolitan, Filmfare, Femina, Man's World and the London based Snoop magazine, she's gone on to experiment with a variety of roles in Kis Kis Ki Kismat, Bachke Rehna Rebaba, Shaadi Se Pehle and Darna Zaroori Hai. In between she became the first Indian actress to star in a Jackie Chan movie (The Myth), which took her to Cannes and Toronto and her pictures were splashed across magazines and newspapers all across the world including Time magazine. With her 7Up commercials on air, a great line up of films and a variety of roles with new and established directors; Mallika Sherawat is poised to rock the world. . |

MALIKA "ON MURDER"
The lady who dared to do kissing scenes with 17 hot smooches in ‘Khwahish’ is back. And this time she claims it goes much further than kissing! We catch up with Mallika Sherawat on the eve of the release of her next film, ‘Murder’, for a ‘no-holds barred’ interview! Tell us about ‘Murder’ and your role in the film... “‘Murder’ is the story of Simran, who is married, and she is very lonely in her marriage. Her home has become a very lonely place for her and she cannot deal with it. And she ends up having an extra-marital affair. I would say that ‘Murder’ is not meant for hypocrites at all.†You are fast acquiring the image of a no-holds-barred sex-symbol because of your daring roles... Are you comfortable with the image? “Acquiring? I think I have already acquired the image. I would just like to ask you one question: If a chemical drug like Viagra is accepted by society and by the world to ignite desire, then what is the problem with my audio-visual drug called cinema which ignites desire? Both are basically doing the same thing!†How were your co-stars, Emraan Hashmi and Ashmit Patel to work with? “They’re great to work with. And all of us had just one thing on our mind – to make a good movie. And make it a success.†We hear there are kissing scenes in this film as well, just like in your earlier film, ‘Khwahish’? “(Gives a mock sigh and laughs) Yes, yes, there are kissing scenes in this film as well. Yeh kissing scenes mera peecha kabhi nahin chodenge! And there are more than kissing scenes in this film.†So how far have you gone in ‘Murder’? “Yes, it does go further than kissing. Because when you’re talking about an extra-marital relationship, how can you not show it on screen? How can you not show passion on screen?†How was it working with director Anurag Basu? “He is extremely talented and hardworking and it was great working with him.†Do you think Indian actresses are too conservative when it comes to doing kissing scenes? “I think that more than the actresses, the whole image of this so-called Hindi film actress as a sati savitri is unnatural. I mean, some women are shown so ignorant that they think you can have babies just by kissing. That, in a day and age when they’re talking of having sex education in school, making it a part of your elementary education. How can you play such ignorant, unreal characters? Women are definitely not like that in real life.†Are you saying actresses shouldn’t be averse to doing kissing scenes? “I am no one to talk about other actresses. I am just talking about myself, the way I want to live. And I think I have made my choice. I would rather be an outsider than be a conformist. Because to conform is to die.†What is your opinion about the Censor Board’s decision to censor music videos? Do you think they are being too restrictive? “I think if we talk about television, we are talking about something happening at home. It’s like an uninvited guest. There should be censorship on television – I’m totally with that. TV is accessible to children of all age groups and cannot be controlled. Cinema can be controlled – like ‘Murder’ has an ‘A’ certificate. But when you’re talking about images that are telecast directly to your house, there should be some regulations.†What other films are you doing right now? “After ‘Murder’ I have another film and it’s called ‘Kis Kis ki Kismat’. It’s a comedy. For the first time you will see Mallika Sherawat in a ‘U’ rated film!†What an irony - a ‘U’ certificate and the title is ‘Kis Kis Ki Kismat’! “(Laughs). Yes, it’s a comedy and it’s called ‘Kis Kis Ki Kismat! The film is also Dharmendra’s comeback. My character is like a cross between say a Mehmood and a Madhubala.†We hear you were really angry when your friend and co-star Ashmit Patel pulled a prank on you recently? “Of course I’m angry! I don’t mind jokes or pranks per se, because I have a good sense of humour, but when any joke crosses its line of decency, and ends up humiliating me, then that hurts. I mean, would they have the gall to play the same prank on a girl who had strong filmi connections or a godfather? Just because I am single, and am trying to make it on my own, they try to play such pranks on me? I don’t have any problems with Ashmit, because I think he was instigated into the whole thing.†. |

Monika Balwa talks to Malika Sherawat:
How did you get into acting? I finished graduation in New Delhi and wanted to act. So I came to Mumbai. As a newcomer without any filmi connections, the only way to get a role was to [appear for a] screen test. I did, for Khwaish. Apparently, Govind had checked over 100 faces. He was happy with my screen test and cast me in the film. What I liked, besides the great script and the role, was the professional approach of the director and his team. I had to perform three screen tests and act in all kinds of scenes. But Khwaish is a dream debut. To haMallika and Himanshu Malikve six songs picturised on me, all sung by Asha Bhosle, is a delight! I did advertisements to get comfortable in front of the camera. Shah Rukh Khan once complimented me about how well I dance. That was a high. Now, I am looking forward to working with Aamir Khan and Sanjay Dutt -- they have been part of my dreams. Tell us about your role. It is an honest and frank role -- a dream come true for a debutante because there aren't any films that have a central female character. It's very realistic and deals with the portrayal of a young, urban and educated woman. In how many Hindi films does the heroine go to the medical store and buy condoms? I have 17 kisses with Himanshu -- that should tell you how the rest of the scenes are. 17 kisses! I had a blast! It is a passionate film about marriage. What do you expect to see? 17 kisses on screen. Imagine more in rehearsals, takes and retakes. If a hero can enjoy it, why can't I? Both of us had a great time. In one of the songs, we actually had bhang, as we were required to act intoxicated. It worked out quite well -- raunchy, horny and passionate. The film demanded exposure, and I did it. Is it a Saathiya-kind of a film? It's better than Saathiya! What was it like working with Himanshu? It was great fun. He is a very supportive co-star. He got into the character very well and even put on weight for it to look less model-ish. He reminds me of Dharmendra. We would fight non-stop off-screen -- just like in the film. They were like rehearsals! Watch out for him in this film because he is going to make a mark. Any tough scenes?Mallika The worst was when I had to emote with a crab on my breast. It freaked me out. Also, Govind is a slave driver. We would wake up at six in the morning for the two months that we shot for the film. But I am sure the end result will justify it. He never compliments me or my work in front of me, because he thinks mere bhaav bad jayenge [the praise will go to my head]. How did you feel when you first saw yourself onscreen? I loved it because I have never looked better. Then my eyes travelled lower to what my mom and dad would see. Honestly, I am here to be an actress, not a social worker or a nun. Why should I be worried? But my parents were shocked because I come from a conservative Jat family. How has the industry reacted? I have had to change my telephone number twice already. I have received a lot of offers, but I am waiting to sign a good script where I am not just a wall flower but have an identity of my own. The worst was when I had to emote with a crab on my breast. It freaked me out. Now now I wonder what they had in mind for using a crab? . |

Lara is all praise for Mallika
While many were unfair to Mallika Sherawat, the one actress who has always applauded is Lara Dutta. She has always maintained that Mallika evoked much response and was a sensation in her own right. When quizzed about the sexy MS and what she thinks of her, Lara says, “Hats off to Mallika to be able to carry off whatever she has in the manner she has. Indian cinema has come a long way and I am glad there are women around who can take it to another level.†It’s great to see this L laud her M-contemporary. |
