The movie "U me aur hum", Ajay Devgan's directoral debut is a wonderful movie on many fronts. It handles the tricky subject of how a love relationship is handled during the duress of alzheimer's disease by one spouse, and it handled it well. The dramatic irony, and the sub-plots of an unhappy marital relationship were woven in superb story-telling. I was reminded of "Black" in its handling of deaf and mute. I haven't seen Tare Zameen Pyar and how it handled autism, but I think that Bollywood can only be enhanced when such subject matters are handled in celluloid.

Kajol is a remarkable actress, and I always thought that Ajay Devgan's forte has always been dramatic acting. He can handle humor and romance capably also. I cannot rave enough about Kajol though.

This miovie has awards written all over it and I would recommend it. I saw it earlier this afternoon, and after the usual Bollywood laughable handling of stroy development, the second half was one of the more intense dramatic bits you'll see in an Indian movie.

"U me aur hum" showed how even though Ajay Devgan made up stories (the salsa dancing, the liquer chocolates and white flowers) to woo Kajol, he told her early that he lied, but his love for her was true. The old fable came into play here - let your love go and if it returns then it was meant for you. Kajol did return to Ajay Devgan, and then the forgetfulness disease kicked in.

Meantim the story was enveloped in the lives of two other couples who were a circle of friends - one couple unhappily married and the other in love but not wanting to get married. You can see the possibilities for interplay here.

As an aside, Since "Crash" won the Hollywood academy a couple of years ago and Babel later on interweave stories that appear disparate until connected towards the end, Indian cinema has picked up on this. That's what was notable of Life in a Metro.

Indian cinema though has to stop "talking down" to its audience. I think that rural India is much more mature than audiences in the 50s and 60s. The song and dance routines ca nremain but shorten the melodrama. And begin to handle themes that are difficult. It's a long way to get to Hollywood.
