The consort of Lord Brahma, Ma Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge and the arts. It is believed that she is the creative manifestation of Lord Brahma who is the creator of the Universe.

The goddess is also known as Vakdevi or the goddess of speech. It is she who endows all human beings with wisdom, arts, and intellect. The four armed goddess plays the Veena with her two hands and in the other two hands holds the lotus flower and the holy Vedas.

It is she who is believed to be the mother of the four Vedas. The goddess is particularly revered by students, teachers, scholars and educationists.

Relieve me of all ignorance and sluggishness O Ma Saraswati.

FESTIVAL OF HOLI - CELEBRATED ON MARCH 11, 2009

The colorful festival of Holi is celebrated on Phalgun Purnima which comes in middle to end Febuary or early to late March. Holi festival has an ancient origin and celebrates the triumph of 'good' over 'bad'. The colorful festival bridges the social gap and renew sweet relationships.

On this day, people hug and wish each other 'Happy Holi'.

Holi celebration begins with lighting up of bonfire on the Holi eve. Numerous legends & stories associated with Holi celebration makes the festival more exuberant and vivid. People rub 'gulal' and 'abeer' on each others' faces and cheer up saying, "bura na maano Holi hai".
Holi also gives a wonderful chance to send blessings and love to dear ones wrapped in a special Holi gift.

Holi Celebration

Holi celebration takes place with lot of joy and verve throughout the country. The enthusiasm of the people reaches its peak and matches with the nature which is in full bounty at the time of Holi.

Holi is being celebrated in Indian since time immemorial but the popularity of Holi celebrations seems to be rising with every passing year and so is the level of hoo-ha. As no other festival gives so much liberty to the people to let their hair loose and enjoy their hidden crazy self.

Differences of any sort are drowned in the coloured waters of Holi and people just enjoy being a play animal. To further enhance the festive spirit of Holi celebrations we have a social sanction to get a kick with the tradition of bhang. Then there is total wildness as people dance to the rhythm of dholak and sing traditional folk songs in loudest possible pitch.

Children particularly enjoy the festival as they throw water filled balloons at passersby...and if anybody stares..they have ready answer, 'Bura na mano Holi hai..' and evoke a smile on the irritated face. Besides, they have their water missiles, called pichkaris to drench the person from far and escape further drenching.

In the midst of these colouring games are savoured the mouth watering holi specialities like gujiya, malpuas, mathri, puran poli, dahi badas etc and downed with glasses full of thandai.

In some states there is also a tradition of breaking the pot full of buttermilk which is hung high on the streets. A group of boys form a human pyramid and one of them break the pot. All this while womenfolk throw buckets of colour water on them and sing folk songs.

And after a wild and eventful day, evenings are celebrated in a dignified manner by visiting friends and relatives. People exchange sweets and hug each other conveying the warm wishes for Holi. These days there people also participate and organise Holi Meets and enjoy the festival till late in the night.

Holi celebrations that starts with the burning of Holika on the eve of Holi thus culminates with the lot of funfilled activity and bonhomie. However, at some places specially Mathura and Barsana Holi celebrations continue for a week as each major temple organise a Holi bash on different day. Lovers of the festival enjoy every moment to the hilt.

Colours will fill the atmosphere as people throw abeer and gulal in the air showing great joy and mirth in the arrival of this Spring Festival.

Holi marks the end of the winter gloom and rejoices in the bloom of the spring time. It is the best time and season to celebrate; Holi provides this opportunity and people take every advantage of it.

Days before Holi, the markets get flooded with the colours of every hues. This aptly sets the mood of the people till the actual day of Holi. It is such a colourful and joyous sight to watch huge piles of bright red, magenta, pink, green and blue every where on the streets. Buying those colours seems as you are bringing joys and colour to your home and into your life.

Children take special delight in the festival and demand every colour in loads. They have so many plans in their mind. They have to be the first to apply colour to Mama, Papa, siblings and a big bunch of friends in their colony. Nobody could miss being coloured by them and of course, they need colour for that.

These days it is easy to buy colours from the market but still some people do take up the task of making colours at home, usually from flowers of tesu and palash. These home made colours, have a special fragrance of love in them.

The other option is to buy gulal which comes in bright shades of pink, magenta, red, yellow and green. 'Abeer' is made of small crystals or paper like chips of mica. This is mixed with the gulal for a rich shine. Mischievous ones, however, go for silver and gold paints on which no colour could be applied.

Whatever be the choice of colour, nobody remains in their original texture at the end of the play. And everybody takes delight looking at the other. Really, the other name of the festival is FUN.

And, it is not just children, but the young and the old alike who take delight in this joyous festival of colours. Seniors too, move in their tolis. Their enthusiasm is at times greater than that of their children as they forget the bars of age and follow their hearts. To youth, holi gives a chance to explore the heights of their enthusiasm as they climb the human pyramids to break the pot of buttermilk and to express their love to their beloved by applying colour.

For, Holi knows no bars, everybody feels it is their right to enjoy and enjoy they do. Songs, dance, drinks, food everything goes in excess when it is time for Holi. It can be said, "Life turns Colourful" when it is time for Holi.

CELBRATING HOLI BOLLYWOOD ISHTYLE

The Holi song has lent resplendent colour to Hindi films for more than five decades now. In the late 1950s era of early colour films, the festival provided filmmakers a welcome chance to sprinkle the screen with a splurge of colour: Mother India's Holi ayee re Kanhai, and Navrang's Arrey ja re hath natkhat come to mind.
Since then, this cinematic tradition has smoothly segued without missing a synthesiser beat to the post-millennial era of Baghban (Holi khele Raghubeera) and Waqt (Do me a favour let's play Holi).

In the process, this colourful festival has served as a backdrop to and catalyst for a gamut of emotions that screen characters have expressed. Emotions are unfurled right in the midst of the colourful swirl of Holi. The predominant colours of Holi are, of course, the colours of celebration. In Sholay, when Ramesh Sippy wanted to create a mood antithetical to the one that would prevail when the dreaded dacoits attacked the little hamlet of Ramgarh, he picturised the Holi song, Holi ke din dil khil jaate hain, rango men rang mil jaate hain. Women daintily knocked over mounds of colour, and the screen was filled with joyous sounds and scenes of revelry as Dharmendra and Hema Malini sang and danced to their heart's content forgetting all about the imminent danger.
Though a trifle longer in the tooth by then, Dharmendra and Hema sought to recapture that fervour seven years later in Rajput's Bhaagi re bhaagi re bhaagi Brij baala Kanha ne pakda rang dala, with Vinod Khanna and Ranjeeta for company. Director Vijay Anand deftly created an atmosphere of riotous bonhomie. Earlier, he had created another memorable Holi sequence in Guide with the Ayee holi ayee stanza in the classic Piya tose naina laage re where, with the help of grand sets and pichkaris galore, he captured heroine Waheeda Rehman's exuberance after she discovers love. Thus making full use of an opportunity to unleash her dancing prowess.

On or off-screen, the film industry fervently believes in heartily enjoying Holi. Traditionally, some of the biggest names in films have held grand Holi bashes which have seen much camaraderie come to the fore -- Raj Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan and Yash Chopra have been famous for their annual festivities. And this has spilled over into their films too.

Yash Chopra has repeatedly used the Holi motif in his films. In his 1984 Mashaal, the popular Holi aayi holi aayi dekho holi aayee re serves as the occasion for the profession of love for Anil Kapoor and Rati Agnihotri as well as veterans Dilip Kumar and Waheeda. In Darr, Chopra injected suspense into Ang se ang lagana sajan mohe aise rang lagana with obsessive stalker Shah Rukh Khan disguising himself in colours to steal an intimate moment with Juhi Chawla, innocently wrapped up in the celebrations. Chopra's newcomer-studded Mohabbatein too had a match-the-couples holi number, Sohni sohni ankhiyon wali.

Amitabh is justifiably famous for his Holi songs leading right upto his latest, Baghbaan's Holi khele Raghubeera in which the 62-year-old star matches steps with the ever-graceful Hema Malini. Of course, Amitabh's most famous Holi number, arguably the most cited Holi number ever (and a onetime-Doordarshan favourite to boot) came 20 years earlier in his Yash Chopra directed Silsila.

Many a myriad mood is reflected in the Hindi film Holi songs. In Zakhmi, avenger Sunil Dutt sings Dil mein holi jal rahi hai as he searches for the wrongdoers. In Kaamchor's Mal de gulal mohe, the happiness of a couple is contrasted with Jaya Pradha's sorrow at being separated from husband Rakesh Roshan; the song simultaneously evokes the moods of milan (union) and birha (seperation). Souten's Meri pehle hi tang thi choli revels in the bantering between lovers Rajesh Khanna and Tina.

In Rajinder Singh Bedi's poignantly penned Phagun, Waheeda abruptly stops singing Piya sang khelu holi phagun aayo re and stings her husband Dharmendra with a caustic remark when he douses her expensive sari in Holi colour. Dharmendra is deeply distressed by her aberration, momentary as it may have been, and a long and painful separation follows.

Whether as a plot pivot or as a mood weaver, the Holi song is a perennial in our cinema. These songs have seeped into our imagination and their hold over our collective consciousness now runs as deep as the colours of Holi.

Holi celebrations in India

Holika...Hiranyakashipu's sister, sits in huge bonfires at night. It is called Kama dahanam in Andhra Pradesh.

On the second day, known as Dhulheti, people spend the day throwing coloured powder and water at each other. The spring season, during which the weather changes, is believed to cause viral fever and cold.

Thus, the playful throwing of the coloured powders has a medicinal significance: the colours are traditionally made of Neem, Kumkum, Haldi, Bilva, and other medicinal herbs prescribed by Āyurvedic doctors. A special drink called thandai is prepared, sometimes containing bhang (Cannabis sativa).

Rangapanchami occurs a few days later on a Panchami (fifth day of the full moon), marking the end of festivities involving colours. Holi takes place over two days in the later part of February or March. As per the Hindu calendar, it falls on the Phalgun Purnima (or Pooranmashi, Full Moon)

The story relating to the different stages and landmarks in the evolution of our national flag is indeed inspiring:

The historic dates and landmarks are:

1906: Three colours: Saffron with eight stars across, white with Vande Mataram and green with moon to right and sun to left. This flag was proposed by some Indians in England and France who thought of an 'Indian National Flag'. Not recognised in India.

1916: Two colours: Red and green, with five red and four green stripes. Emblem of Great Bear. Union Jack at top left. In vogue during 'Home rule days'.

1921: Three colours: White, green and red, with Charkha across all colours. Sponsored by Mahatma Gandhi at the Bezwada Session of the Indian National Congress (this flag was informally used at all sessions of the Congress till 1931, though not officially accepted/adopted by the Congress).

March, 1931: One colour: Saffron with Charkha at top left. This flag was proposed by a committee appointed by Working Committee after Karachi Congress. This flag was not approved by Working Committee.

August, 1931:Three colours: Saffron, white and green, Charkha in blue colour in middle across white strip. Length and breadth in proportion of 3:2. Proposed by Congress Working Committee. Form of Flag suggested by Mahatma Gandhi retained with slight changes in order of colours and position of Chakra. Accepted by AICC officially in Bombay in August 1931.

August 15, 1947: The present tricolour National Flag was adopted.

Pardes synopsis..

Kishori Lal (Amrish Puri) is a successful businessman settled in America but still emotionally attached to his motherland - India.So the pardesi comes to India with his son Rajiv (Apporva Agnihotri) to find a suitable match for Rajiv.He finds his bahu in Punjab-ki-kudi Kusum Ganga (Mahima Chaudhry) in the house of his childhood friend Suraj Dev (Alok Nath). To finalise the marriage he sends his son along with his foster son Arjun (Shahrukh Khan) to India. Arjun plays the cupid and returns to America with Kusum and Rajiv. All is hunky-dori till the true Bharatiya Nari finds out that her future husband is not a teetotaler. So, the heartbroken Kusum returns to India. Don't conclude that it is the end of the Bollywood fairy tale. It is just the beginning as Arjun (the hero) falls in love with his would-have-been bhabi while playing the cupid.

The story is very simple but watchable with its pleasant music and good photography

Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (Devanagari: फिर भी दिल है हिंदुस्तानी, Nastaliq: پھر بھی دل ہے ہندوستانے translation : "But the heart is still Indian") is a Bollywood movie released by Dreamz Unlimited on January 21, 2000. The film was directed by Aziz Mirza and stars Shahrukh Khan as Ajay Bakshi, a confident, loudmouth TV reporter, and Juhi Chawla as Ria Banerjee, Ajay's rival reporter.

Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani focuses on the media war being fought in the TV newsrooms.

The film had mixed reviews from critics and audiences and failed at the box office, even though it was a high-profile movie by director Aziz Mirza, it could not emulate the successes his previous movies Yes Boss and Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman had. The film only managed to pick up one award - in 2001, Award for Technical Excellence from Awards of the International Indian Film Academy.
