History of the Indian Flag

The story relating to the different stages and landmarks in the evolution of our national flag is indeed inspiring:

The historic dates and landmarks are:

1906: Three colours: Saffron with eight stars across, white with Vande Mataram and green with moon to right and sun to left. This flag was proposed by some Indians in England and France who thought of an 'Indian National Flag'. Not recognised in India.

1916: Two colours: Red and green, with five red and four green stripes. Emblem of Great Bear. Union Jack at top left. In vogue during 'Home rule days'.

1921: Three colours: White, green and red, with Charkha across all colours. Sponsored by Mahatma Gandhi at the Bezwada Session of the Indian National Congress (this flag was informally used at all sessions of the Congress till 1931, though not officially accepted/adopted by the Congress).

March, 1931: One colour: Saffron with Charkha at top left. This flag was proposed by a committee appointed by Working Committee after Karachi Congress. This flag was not approved by Working Committee.

August, 1931: Three colours: Saffron, white and green, Charkha in blue colour in middle across white strip. Length and breadth in proportion of 3:2. Proposed by Congress Working Committee.

Form of Flag suggested by Mahatma Gandhi retained with slight changes in order of colours and position of Chakra. Accepted by AICC officially in Bombay in August 1931.

August 15, 1947: The present tricolour National Flag was adopted.

An excellent in depth article of the Indian Flag can be found at Wikipedia.

Vande Mataram

A R Rahman Vande Mataram with Inspiring Lyrics

Yahan vahan saara jahan dekh liya
Ab tak bhi tere jaisa koi nahin
Main assi nahin, sau din duniya ghooma hai
Naahi kaahe tere jaisa koi nahin
Main gaya jahan bhi, bas teri yaad thi
Jo mere saath thi mujhko tadpaati rulaati
Sab se pyaari teri soorat
Pyaar hai bas tera, pyaar hi
Maa tujhe salaam, maa tujhe salaam
Amma tujhe salaam

Vande maataram, vande maataram
Vande maataram, vande maataram
Vande maataram, vande maataram

Janam janam tera hoon deewana main
Jhoomoon naachoon gaaoon tere pyaar ka taraana
Main jeena nahin soch nahin duniya ki daulat nahin
Bas lootunga tere pyaar ka khazaana
Ek nazar jab teri hoti hai pyaar ki
Duniya tab to meri chamke damke maheke re
Tera chehra sooraj jaisa chaand si thand hai pyaar mein

Vande maataram, vande maataram
Vande maataram, vande maataram
Vande maataram, vande maataram

Tere paas hi main aa raha hoon
Apni baahein khol de
Zor se mujhko gale laga le
Mujhko phir voh pyaar de
Tu hi zindagi hai, tu hi meri mohabbat hai
Tere hi pairon mein jannat hai
Tu hi dil, tu jaan, amma

Maa tujhe salaam, maa tujhe salaam
Amma tujhe salaam, maa tujhe salaam

Vande maataram, vande maataram
Vande maataram, vande maataram
Vande maataram, vande maataram

phir bhi dil hai hindustani

Udit Narayan sings...

Hum logon ko samajh sako to
Hum logon ko samajh sako to samjho dilbar jaani
Jitna bhi tum samjhoge utni hogi hairaani
Hum logon ko samajh sako to samjho dilbar jaani
Jitna bhi tum samjhoge utni hogi hairaani

Apni chhatri tumko dedein kabhi jo barse paani
Kabhi naye packet mein bechein tumko cheez puraani

Phir bhi dil hai hindusatni - 2
Phir bhi dil hai hindustani - 2

Thode anari hain thode khiladi
Ruk rukke chalti hai apni gaadi
Thode anari hain thode khiladi
Ruk rukke chalti hai apni gaadi
Humein pyaar chahiye
Aur paise bhi
Hum aise bhi hain
Hum hain vaise bhi

Hum logon ko samajh sako to samjho dilbar jaani
Ulti seedhi jaisi bhi hai apni yehi kahaani
Thodi hummein khushiyaan bhi hain
Thodi hai nadaani
Thodi hum mein sachchaai hai
Thodi beimaani

Phir bhi dil hai hindusatni - 2
Phir bhi dil hai hindustani - 2

Aankhon mein kuchh aansoo hain kuchh sapne hain
Aansoo aur sapne donon hi apne hain
Aankhon mein kuchh aansoo hain kuchh sapne hain
Aansoo aur sapne donon hi apne hain
Dil dukha hai lekin toota to nahin hai
Umeed ka daaman chooka to nahin hai

Hum logon ko samajh sako to samjho dilbar jaani
Thodi majboori hai lekin thodi hai manmaani
Thodi tu tu main main hai aur thodi kheecha taani
Hum mein kaafi baatein hain jo lagti hain deewani

Phir bhi dil hai hindusatni - 2
Phir bhi dil hai hindustani - 2

chhodon kal ki batein

Hum Hindustani - Chhodo Kal Ki - Mukesh

Lyrics and translations...

Chhodo kal ki baatein, kal ki baat puraani
stop talking about what happened yesterday,
what happened yesterday is old news

Naye daur mein likhenge milkar nayi kahaani
in the new age we will write together a new story
Hum Hindustani, Hum Hindustani - 2
We are Indian, we are Indian

Aaj puraani zanjeeron ko tod chuke hain
today we have broken old chains
Kya dekhe us manzil ko jo chhod chuke hain
why look at the destination we have left
Chaand ke dar pe jaa pahuncha hai aaj zamaana
today the world has arrived at the door of the moon
Naye jagat se hum bhi naata jod chuke hain
we have also made a connection with the new world
Naya khoon hai, nayi umangein, ab hai nayi jawaani
it is new blood, new desires, now we have new youth

Hum Hindustani Hum Hindustani
Chhodo kal ki baatein, kal ki baat puraani
Naye daur mein likhenge milkar nayi kahaani
Hum Hindustani, Hum hindustani

Aao mehnat ko apna imaan banaaye
let us make hard work our motto
Apne haathon ko apna bhagwaan banaaye
let us make our hands our God
Ram ki is dharti ko gautam ki bhoomi ko
this earth of Ram, this land of Gautam
Sapnon se bhi pyaara hindustan banaaye
let's make an India sweeter than even dreams
Naya khoon hai, nayi umangein, ab hai nayi jawaani

Hum hindustani Hum Hindustani
Chhodo kal ki baatein, kal ki baat puraani
Naye daur mein likhenge milkar nayi kahaani
Hum hindustani, hum hindustani

Har zarra hai moti, aankh uthaakar dekho
every little thing is a pearl, raise your eyes and look
Maati mein sona hai, haath badhaakar dekho
in the dirt is gold, extend your hands and look
Sone ki yeh ganga hai, chaandi ki yamuna
The Ganges river is gold, The Yamuna river is silver
Chaaho to patthar pe dhaan ugaakar dekho
if you want you can grown paddy (rice) on rocks
Naya khoon hai, nayi umangein, ab hai nayi jawaani

Hum Hindustani, Hum Hindustani
Chhodo kal ki baatein, kal ki baat puraani
Naye daur mein likhenge milkar nayi kahaani
Hum Hindustani, Hum Hindustani - 2

Fueled by a newfound desire for dramatic necklaces (I’m usually an earring gal) after Jodha Akbar...am now obsessed with traditional Indian bridal n other jewelry.

As a result, I’ve spent many hours Googling and ogling (is it a coincidence that those words are so similar?) Kundan jewelry, mangalsutra, tikka, jhoomar, and all sorts of beautiful things I want to drape myself in for no apparent reason....

INDIAN BRIDAL JEWELRY

Indian brides wear jewelry sets that are made in gold, be it necklaces, bangles, anklets and earrings. Many a time, the bridal jewelry is set with diamonds and other precious stones.

The modern day bride prefers to have some modern wearable items of gold jewelry in her trousseau. Not many would like to be weighed down by heavy jewelry that cannot be worn often and will be more an invitation for thieves.

Come the wedding season and you can see crowds thronging the jewelry stores. Indian bridal jewelry has always been considered her 'streedhan' - personal wealth that would stand in good stead in times of need.

Indian jewelry for brides is created to enhance the beauty of the woman. The gentle tinkle of the anklets around delicate feet, a set of jingling bangles on her hands and an exquisitely crafted necklace round her neck - the Indian bride looks resplendent in her finery and colorful profusion.

Some bridal ornaments such as waistbands and armlets are seldom worn these days.

INDIAN BRIDAL JEWELRY VARIES BY REGIONS THROUGH OUT INDIA

Indian bridal jewelry varies from region to region as well as different communities.

Precious stones such as jade, garnet, emerald, amethyst, pearl and coral are widely used in Indian bridal jewelry. Stones are said to pass their own special healing touch to the wearer. The precious stones are said to have an effect on one's blood vessels and temperament. Use of navarathnas or nine precious stones can be seen in finger rings and earrings.

The mangal sutra is an important item in the bridal jewelry. This necklace is tied by the husband around the wife's neck as a symbol of their union. This is usually created on a necklace strung with black beads. It is considered a protection against the evil eye. Many a bride makes a few changes to suit her tastes, keeping well within the prescribed parameters.

The conventional gold pendant is often replaced with a diamond. The length of the mangalsutra is one of personal preference. Black beads are sometimes interspersed with gold beads. South Indian brides wear silk saris that are offset by exquisite jewelry in gold. Bridal jewelry encrusted with rubies, emeralds or pearls is popular. The south Indian women wear a thaali as a symbol of their marriage. This is usually in the form of a thick yellow thread with gold pendant.

Brides from Maharashtra wear stings of pearls in a cascade from the temples down to the shoulders, framing the face. The Punjabi bride wears bangles that are made of ivory. The parting of her hair is decorated with a gold ornament called the tikka. Red and green bangles or churas are important in many communities of India. They are given by the bride's mother and it is customary to wear them for about 40 days after the wedding ceremony.

Some churas are set in ivory with inlay work done on them. Toe-rings are another jewelry item that is worn by married women in many parts of the country. The women from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar wear toe-rings called bichwa. Kashmiri women wear a long suspended cord with an ornament from the pierced ears. Brides from Bengal wear the iron kada or bangle called 'loha'. This is artistically encased in gold. A red lac bangle is yet another important bridal jewelry item.

Fine filigree jewelry in silver is a hallmark of the artisans of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. Filigree work uses silver wires of varying thickness to make geometrical shapes, leaves, flowers and butterflies and birds. Jaipur is famous for enamel work - exquisite bangles and necklaces with colored enamel paneling on crafted gold.

Kundan jewelry also finds favor with many Indian brides.Kundan jewelry is characterized by gems embedded in gold leaf and not rim or claw. This jewelry style is inspired by the Mughals. Temple jewelry from South India is inspired by temple statues and motifs and is usually characterized by red and green semi precious stones. Jewelry in the southern states is inspired by nature - paisley motifs, rice grains, melon seeds, cobra head and birds.

thoda sa pagla

Movie: Aur Pyar Ho Gaya.. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Song: Thoda Sa Pagla

Luk-chup ke main ghoomi gali gali
(Peeping, I wandered among the streets)
Kahin mila nahin mera piya
(I didn't find my lover anywhere)
Khil khil ke hans di kali kali
(The buds were blooming with a smile)
Par khila nahin mera jiya
(But my heart did not bloom)
Meri itni kahaani, meri hai yeh pareshaani
(This is my story, this is my problem)
Kabhi aaye, koi aaye, koi bole maine dil diya
(Sometime won't someone come and say I love you?)
Dhoond rahi hoon main aisa deewana
(I'm looking for such a lover)
Thoda sa pagla, thoda siyaana - 2
(Who's a little crazy and a little wise)

Luk-chup ke main ghoomi gali gali
(Peeping, I wandered among the streets)
Kahin mila nahin mera piya
(I didn't find my lover anywhere)
Khil khil ke hans di kali kali
(The buds were blooming with a smile)
Par khila nahin mera jiya
(But my heart did not bloom)
Meri itni kahaani, meri hai yeh pareshaani
(This is my story, this is my problem)
Kabhi aaye, koi aaye, koi bole maine dil diya
(Sometime won't someone come and say I love you?)
Dhoond rahi hoon main aisa deewana
(I'm looking for such a lover)
Thoda sa pagla, thoda siyaana - 2
(Who's a little crazy and a little wise)

Haan, mujhse kare voh aake pyaari pyaari baatein
(Yes, he'll come and sweetly speak to me)
Chehre ko chaand keh de, zulfon ko raatein
(He'll call my face the moon and my hair the night)
Milne voh jo aaye, bole haaye, meri jaana
(When he comes, he'll say "oh, my darling")
Dil mein tadapte hai tere hi armaan
("In my craving heart is only desire for you")
Main tera deewana hoon, tu jo maange jaan bhi doon - 2
("I'm crazy for you, if you ask I'll give you my life")
Bigdoon to karde shooru haqlaana
(If I'm angry, he'll start to cajole me)
Thoda sa pagla, thoda siyaana - 2
(A little crazy, a little wise)

Luk-chup ke main ghoomi gali gali
(Peeping, I wandered among the streets)
Kahin mila nahin mera piya

Thoda sa pagla, thoda siyaana - 2
(Who's a little crazy and a little wise)

Haan, kabhi laake de voh guthka mujhe Bhopal ka
(Yes, sometimes he'll bring tobacco from Bhopal)
Kabhi leke aaye lehnga voh Nainitaal ka
(Sometimes he'll bring a dress from Nainitaal)
Bareli voh jaaye to voh laaye surmeidaani
(If he goes to Bareli, he'll bring kohl)
Lucknow se le aaye kurta kaamdaani
(From Lucknow he'll bring an embroidered shirt)
Banaras agar jaaye, sari leke hi aaye - 2
(If he goes to Banaras, he'll bring a sari)
Poochhe Dehli se hai kya mangwaana
(He'll ask, "what do you want from Dehli?")
Thoda sa pagla, thoda siyaana - 2
(A little crazy, a little wise)

NAVRATRI

(Marathiनवरात्रि,Sanskrit: नवरात्रि, Bengali: নবরাত্রি, Kannada:ನವರಾತ್ರಿ) is a Hindu festival of worship and dance. The word Navaratri literally means nine nights in Sanskrit; Nava meaning Nine and Ratri meaning nights. During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Shakti/Devi i.e. female divinity are worshipped.

Significance

The beginning of spring and the beginning of autumn are two very important junctions of climatic and solar influence. These two periods are taken as sacred opportunities for the worship of the Divine Mother. The dates of the festival are determined according to the lunar calendar.

Dasahara, meaning ‘ten days’, becomes dasara in popular parlance. The Navaratri festival or ‘nine day festival’ becomes ‘ten day festival’ with the addition of the last day, Vijayadashami which is its culmination. On all these ten days, the various forms of Mother Mahisasura-mardini (Durga) are worshipped with fervour and devotion.

Observed by Hinduism - Festival of Hindus

Date is usually around September, October and November. The date changes every year, depending on the movements of the planets. It is a celebrations of 9 days.

Traditions of Navaratri

There are five Navaratris devoted to the worship of Shakti (Parvati or Durga). Out of these only three are being celebrated now.

1. Sharad Navaratri

This is the most important of the Navratris, and is simply called Navratri or occasionally, Maha Navratri (the Great Navratri). It is celebrated during Sharad (beginning of winter, Sept-Oct). It celebrates the slaying of Mahishasura by the goddess Durga. The festival is observed in most parts of India, particularly in Northern India, Eastern India, and Western India.

2. Vasant Navaratri

This is celebrated during Vasant Ritu (beginning of summer) (March- April). This Navaratri is celebrated in North India. Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu observes Navaratri during this period.

3. Ashada Navaratri

This Navaratri is particularly important for all Upasakas of Varahi- Celebrated in July - August. This is called Guhya Navaratri in Himachal Pradesh. Varahi is one of the seven Matrikas of Devi Mahatmya.

Sharad Navaratri

Commences on the first and ends on the tenth day of the bright half of the lunar month Aswayuja/Asvina.

‘The Navaratri festival has to be celebrated during the bright fortnight of the month of Asvina, in the order of pratipada, etc, until the navami ends,’ says the Dhaumya-vacana.

Vasantha Navaratri

This is celebrated during Vasantha Ruthu (beginning of summer) (March- April). This is also known as Chaitra navaratri as it falls during the lunar month of Chithra.

Navratri

The nine nights of celebration which precede the festival of Dussehra or Vijayadashmi, is known as Navratri. There was a time when the world was in the demonic grip of Maheshasura (a demon who had taken the form of a buffalo). The boon of invincibility, made him all powerful, for no man could ever defeat him in battle.

Maheshasura conquered the heavens, and possessed the palace of the gods. The gods pleaded with Shiva for help. Shiva appealed to Parvati, who used her shakti and a goddess appeared from the dark. Durga is the tamasic (dark) incarnation of Parvati. The gods bowed before Durga and offered her their powerful weapons. While the gods watched, Durga battled Maheshasur.

On Vijayadashmi, Durga won back the heavens and earth from Maheshasura when she thrust her trident into his chest and killed him. Navratri is a festival of worship, dance and music celebrated over a period of nine nights. It is celebrated from the first to ninth date of Ashwin Shukla Paksha of the Hindu Calendar for the worship of the Goddess Durga. Goddess Durga is believed to exist in many forms like Goddess Bhavani, Jagdamba,Mahakali etc. Devotees perform the 'devi-sthaapna' in their homes wherein they invite the Goddess and perform 'pooja-path' for nine days.

Navratri - Celebrations in India

Gujaratis perform their traditional dances 'Garba' &'Dandiya-Raas' during Navratri. The women-folk dance in a circle, singing 'Garbas' or traditional songs.'Dandiya-Raas' is played with wooden sticks or 'dandiyas'. Apart from Gujrat,Garbas are performed in other states & cities like Mumbai.

Beautifully decorated 'mandaps'are set up for playing garba & dandiya by various cultural societies, housing commitees & youth social groups. Young men-women wear colourful traditional dresses and play Garba with great enthusiasm. The mood of Navratri is very colourful & unique.

In West Bengal, Navratri is celebrated as 'Durga-pooja'which is the most important festival in that part of India. Celebrations of Durga-pooja in Bengal are similar to celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra. Idols of Goddess Durga are worshipped for nine days in beautifully decorated 'pandaals'. It is a public festival. On the tenth day,the 'Visarjan' or immersion of idols in sea waters is performed. In various parts of India, the 'Ram-Leela' is performed during Navratri.

Ram-Leela is a stage enaction of Ramayana, the story of Lord Rama. The day after Navratri,i.e.,tenth day, is observed as 'Dassera' or 'Vijayadashmi'. It marks the victory of good over evil. It is believed that on this day, Lord Rama had killed the demon Ravana. So, on Vijayadashmi, effigies of Ravana are burnt all over India. During the first nine days of Asvina (aaso) month of Hindu calendar we honor "Divine Mother".

Navratri - Celebrations

Three days for Durga (Goddess of valor) three days for Lakshmi (Goddess of Wealth) and three days for Sarswati (Goddess of Knowledge) are devoted to the Trinity of God worshipped in a female form. It is Shakti, identical to the Brahma (absolute) of Vedanta. On the fifth day (Lalita Panchami), it is traditional, to gather all books, light a lamp and invoke Sarswati (Goddess of knowledge and art). Artisans will rest their "tools" and offer them worship. The eighth and ninth day, it is traditional to perform "Yagna" or Havana (sacrifice offered to the fire- purification and symbolic burning ceremony) to honor "Divine Mother" and bid her farewell.

Some devotees also observe "fast" for 1 day or all the nine days testing their ability to control their senses and create more energy "Sakti". The tenth day, also known as Vijaya Dasami (day of Victory over evils), Dasara or Dussehra is significant to launch new activities or beginning of learning. In Northern India, huge effigies of Ravana are burnt to celebrate Rama's conquest of the demon on the Tenth day.

There are parades or Ram Lila in many localities. In eastern India, the festival is known as Durga Puja where the images are created, worshipped for 10 days and immersed in the sea. In southern India, houses are decorated with displays of dolls, toys and images of the Gods. In western India, the traditional Garb dance is performed nightly primarily by the ladies. Currently, however Dandiya (with disco beats) has taken a fancy with many men or women as they go in a trance like state with non-stop music.

GODDESS LAKSHMI

Goddess Lakshmi, consort of Lord Vishnu, is also the goddess of wealth and prosperity. The word ''Lakshmi'' is derived from the Sanskrit word Laksme, meaning "goal."

Lakshmi, therefore, represents the goal of life, which includes worldly as well as spiritual prosperity.

Worship Goddess Lakshmi for promotion, success and personal virtues. Women who chant her mantra will develop irresistible beauty and radiance, that shines from within.

Praying to Laxmi you will learn how to be truly feminine and win everybody's admiration. This mantra is a supplement for those, who are in show business or in acting and modeling.

The mantra will help you to be noticed, brings luck and fortune. The drawing of Laxmi's footprints are used as a magic charm in India.

Women draw these small, auspicious footprints on thresholds at twilight to welcome Lakshmi, who bestows wealth and wisdom, health and good cheer."

GODDESS LAKSHMI

When the Gods and Demons were churning the celestial milky ocean to extract the ambroasia (Amirtham), the elixir of life, many divine products came out of the ocean, including Goddess Lakshmi. She was "so radiant that white elephants bathed her in milk, a lotus graced her feet and was holding the garland of victory - Vyjayanthi".

She was shining so brilliantly bringing light and warmth to everything she looked upon, that the Devas (Gods) and Asuras (Demons) were amazed. But she chose Lord Vishnu who was as perfect and as beautiful as her.

Goddess Lakshmi provides Lord Vishnu with wealth for the maintenance and preservation of the creation. Lakshmi is an example of the most faithful, dedicated and loving wife. Every time Vishnu, her husband, had to come to save the world, she was born to accompany her spouse in his every avatar, or incarnation.

She was born as Sita when Vishnu appeared as Rama, she was Rukmini when Vishnu appeared as Krishna and she was Padma when her husband came as Vamana. Sita was perhaps the most heroic example of her devotion.

GODDESS LAKSHMI

Her four hands represent four spiritual virtues. She sits on a fully blossomed lotus, a seat of divine truth. An aura of divine happiness, charm, mental and spiritual satisfaction, and prosperity always exists around her. Her palm is always extended to bless people.

Ashta Lakshmi are her eight forms which are the commonly worshipped aspects; Aadi Lakshmi, Santhana Lakshmi, Gaja Lakshmi, Dhana Lakshmi, Dhaanya Lakshmi, Vijaya Lakshmi, Veera Lakshmi and Aiswarya Lakshmi.

In each form, she bestows one form of wealth to her devotees. She wears red clothes with a golden lining and is poised on a lotus. She has golden coins and lotuses in her hands. Two elephants are shown next to the Goddess.

Her four arms represent the four directions in space and thus symbolize omnipresence and omnipotence of the Goddess. The red color symbolizes activity. The golden lining on Her red dress denotes prosperity.

Goddess Lakshmi is regularly worshipped in houses and temples by Her devotees. A special worship is offered to Her annually on the auspicious day of Diwali, with religious rituals and colorful ceremonies specifically devoted to Her.

MEGHA GODDESS SARASWATI SADHNA

By Pt. Uma Shankar Shukla

"Shuklaam Brahmvichaar Saar Paramaadyaam Jagadvyaapineem Veennaa Pushtak Dhaarinneebhamay Daam Jaad Yaapandhkaaraapahaam.
Haste Sfatik Maalikaam Vidhateem Paramaasane Sansthitaam Vande Taam Parameshwareem Bhagwateem Buddhi Pradaam Shaaradaam."

It is said that Devi Saraswati is help for student, by her grace one can achieve any target in studies. Basant Panchmi is most aspicious day for her puja/worship.

This day one can get her complete blessing by her vedic puja. As per veda given puja is one of the best puja of devi saraswati. Early in the morning get up and have a bath. Wear yellow or saffron robes. Then in a clean room sit with your family members. Before yourself place a picture of Goddess Saraswati. Then concentrating on her holy form chant the following Mantra.

I pray to Bhagwati Saraswati who has a fair complexion, who is the first and foremost divine energy, who is present in the world in the form of knowledge, who wields a Veenaa, Vedas, Sfatik rosary in her hands and one of whose hands is raised in blessing. She is capable of removing ignorance and bestowing intelligence.

Then in a plate draw a Saraswati Yantra with a silver straw or wire. If not possible use a copper wire. For ink use Ashtgandh and draw the Yantra. Ashtgandh is a mixture of eight fragrant articles and it is a divine Sadhana article. It is said that the fragrance of Ashtgandh used to continuously emanate from the form of Lord Krishna.

Then on the Yantra thus inscribed place a Saraswati Yantra in the form of an amulet. If trying the ritual for your children then you should have a Yantra for each child. Make a mark of Ashtgandh on the Yantra and offer yellow flowers.

LORD RAMA

Rama (IAST: rāma, Devanāgarī: राम, Khmer: ព្រះរាម, Thai: พระราม, Lao: ພຣະຣາມ, Burmese: Yama, Tagalog: Rajah Bantugan) or Ramachandra was a legendary king of Ayodhya in ancient India.

In Hinduism, he is considered to be an Avatar of Vishnu and a lila-avatara as described in the Bhagavata Purana. A significant section of Hindus do not doubt his historicity, and consider him an actual king who ruled over a large part of what is now India from his capital Ayodhya.

Rama is one of the many popular figures and deities in Hinduism, specifically Vaishnavism and Vaishnava religious scriptures in South and Southeast Asia. The majority of details concerning Rama come from the Ramayana, one of the two great epics of India.

Born as the eldest son of Kaushalya and Dasharatha, king of Ayodhya, Rama is referred to within Hinduism as Maryada Purushottama, literally the Perfect Man or Lord of Restrictions. Rama is the husband of Sita, who Hindus consider to be an Avatar of Lakshmi and the embodiment of perfect womanhood.

LORD RAMA JOURNEY

Rama's life and journey is one of perfect adherence to dharma despite harsh tests of life and time. For the sake of his father's honour, Rama abandons his claim to Kosala's throne to serve an exile of fourteen years in the forest.

His wife, Sita and brother, Lakshmana being unable to live without Rama decide to join him, and all three spend the fourteen years in exile together. This leads to the kidnapping of Sita by Ravana, the Rakshasa monarch of Lanka.

After a long and arduous search that tests his personal strength and virtue, Rama fights a colossal war against Ravana's armies. In a war of powerful and magical beings, greatly destructive weaponry and battles, Rama slays Ravana in battle and liberates his wife. Having completed his exile, Rama returns to be crowned King in Ayodhya (the capital of his Kingdom) and eventually becomes Emperor of the World, after which he reigns for eleven thousand years – an era of perfect happiness, peace, prosperity and justice known as Rama Rajya.

RAMA COURAGE

Rama's courage in searching for Sita and fighting a terrible war to rescue his wife and their honour is complemented by Sita's absolute devotion to her husband's love, and perfect chastity despite being Ravana's captive. Rama's younger brothers, namely Lakshmana, Shatrughna and Bharata strongly complement his piety, virtue and strength, and they are believed by many to belong to the Maryada Purushottama and the Seventh Avatara, mainly embodied by Rama.

Rama's piety and virtue attract powerful and devoted allies such as Hanuman and the Vanaras of Kishkindha, with whose help he rescues Sita.

The legend of Rama is deeply influential and popular in the societies of the Indian subcontinent and across South East Asia. Rama is revered for his unending compassion, courage and devotion to religious values and duty.

SECULAR INDIA GOVERNMENT ENGINEERS TO DESTROY THE HISTORICAL HERITAGE OF HINDU DHARMA

The Congress-led India government had planned to destroy the Lord Rama Bridge (Lord Rama is revered in Hinduism as an incarnation of the Supreme Godhead) in order to make an easy route for commercial and American warships into the borders of India. This plan had met with stiff opposition in the country as well as in the courts. In a writ petition the Supreme Court had ordered to stop the dredging of the bridge and had required the government to submit an affidavit in support of its plans.

The petition had argued that the Bridge, apart from having a great ancient religious significance, having been built by Lord Rama’s army in order to facilitate the passage of the Lord to Sri Lanka in order to save His wife from the clutches of the tyrant king Ravana, had also historical, defense and environmental significance and that it should be preserved.

The Government had submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court denying the very existence of Lord Rama and described the Holy Scripture Ramayana as a myth, as was orginally dictated to the Hindu masses by the Colonial Missionaries.

NASA has already ruled that the structure cannot be attributed to a natural phenomenon, also admitting that there are signs of erosion due to a rise in sea levels between India and Sri Lanka.

Save Sri Ram Setu, or Adam's Bridge

On the occasion of Ram Navami, would like to flash the light on the Divine RaamSetu which was built by Lord Sree Rama to reach Lanka. Many Hindus start their day with reciting shloka of Ramraksha and pray to Lord Rama. The Ramayana is not only our divine holy scripture but also shows us Dharma and guides us on how we should lead our lives and live with others in the family and society.

It is very sad that the current government in India is trying to demolish our cultural heritage and divine symbol Raam Setu, saying that it’s not built by Lord Rama and it is nothing to do with the Ramayana. On the other hand the Sri Lanka government has found evidences of Ramayana in Sri Lanka and is challenging our Indian government.

What is Setu (Sethu) Samudram Project?

The Setu (Sethu) Samudram Shipping Canal Project (SSCP) is a project that has been approved by the Government of India and its work has been started near Kodand Ram Temple. In this project, Palk Gulf and Gulf Mennar will be linked by making a shipping canal through Rameshwaram Island. This will allow ships and boats to navigate in the passage between India and Sri Lanka without having to circle Sri Lanka (as is being done currently). This may save about 400 nautical miles voyage on the West Coast. This project will connect the National Sea Route. This canal will shorten the length of the sea route for ships. Rs. 21 crore per year for fuel expenditure of ships will be saved.

Danger to Ram Setu (Sethu)

Pictures taken by NASA [National Aeronautics & Space Administration], USA from space show the remains of what appears to be an ages old man-made bridge between Rameshwaram and Sri Lanka. According to Hindu scriptures and belief, Lord Ram and his vaanar sena had built a bridge from Rameshwaram to Sri Lanka about 17 lacs 25 thousands years ago. The discovery of Shri Ram Setu by NASA confirms that Hindu scriptures and belief are correct in this matter and that Ramayana is ‘history’ and not “mythology” as is often construed.

The Setu (Sethu) Samudram [shipping canal project] is based on the notion that it is inevitable to break the Shri Ram Setu for easy navigation. This will amount to damaging a monument of both historical and religious importance to Hindus. {ADAM'S BRIDGE}
