I recommend the movie "Before the Rains", a Merchant Ivory production featuring the English language debut of the Indian director Santosh Sivan. Like the independent film "The Kite Runner", this movie will be reckoned with come Oscar time.
Set in 1937 Keerala with Indian nationalism on the rise, a discovered love story between an English Spice farmer and his Indian maid (whose arranged marriage was suffering from spousal abuse) led to some tragic events. Torn between his boss and his villagers, TK (Rahul Bose) has divided loyalties. With the bank pressuring him, investigators closing in and the monsoon rains imminent, Henry Moores (Linus Roach) faces a dilema. Nandita Das as Sarjani is in the middle of this searing human drama. Go see it in Manhattan or at an Art Movie house near you. |
