Sis, wish we could have done more than 100, there are some very great tunes that were left out, like for instance

(1) Rakhi Dhago ka Tu Haar...........Rakhi (196?)
(2) Ya Mere Manzil Wafa..............Rakhi
(3) Khilona jaan kar tum.............Khilona
(4) Khush rahay Tu Sada..............Khilona
(5) Kitne Jawa Hai Zindagee..........Shehnai
(6) Asli Soorat chupi Rahay..........Izzat

The list could go to another hundred, no one, no one could ever
write on the great songs of Rafi in only 100 selections. He was too great an artiste and have too large a selection to select only 100 out of some 26,000. Some day I will sit down with regret to exclude some of his greatest songs: Frown Frown

MOHAMED RAFI: THE VERSATILE GENIOUS

As the shocking news of Rafi Sahab's demise was redeived. The sad news
spread like wild fire throughout the country. Songs turned into a dirge.
The angels wept in the sky and tears were shed in the form of raindrops over his
namaaz-e-janaza (funeral prayer), His funeral procession started amid heavy
rain and thunder, people gathered on the top of buildings, trees and in windows
to catch a last glimpse of their favourite singer. The procession reached the
Juhu graveyard many famous film personalities were trying their best to
control the crowd which had gathered to pay it's last respects to the voice
which had warmed their hearts for decades.
A voice which had become a part of
their lives.

MOHAMED RAFI: THE VERSATILE GENIOUS

Finally, the mortal body was interred in the same dust from which it was
initially made.

Dust had returned to dust, and all that we were left with were sweet memories.
Memories to last one a lifetime.

MOHAMED RAFI: THE VERSATILE GENIOUS

And here we are twenty five years later, getting carried away, by Rafisaab's legacy; we are listing 100 of his best (as we think ) and in the process, leaving out hits like

"Najat ko zulf say paani (Shehnai)" and Manoj Kumar belting out

"Naseeb may jiskay jo likhata" from Do Badan.

An exercise none can execute with that precision, but "try we shall"

Asli Soorat chupi Rahay..........Izzat

but this is nice!

"Ye Dil Tum Bin Kahin Lagta Nahin" from Izzat
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/p/x/Vq7mnVFiot.As1NMvHdW/

ye dil tum been kahee lagataa naheen, hum kyaa kare
[this heart does not wanna concentrate anywhere without you, what shall I do?]
tasawwoor mein koee basataa nahee, hum kyaa kare
(no one else settles in my imaginations, what shall I do]
tum hee kah do ab aye jaana-ye-wafaa hum kyaa kare
[You tell me now, my sweetheart, what shall I do]

loote dil mein diyaa jalataa nahee, hum kyaa kare
[in a stolen heart a lamp cannot be lit, what shall I do]
tum hee kah do ab aye jaana-ye-wafaa hum kyaa kare
[Now you tell me my loyal love, what shall I do]

kisee ke dil mein bas ke dil ko tadapaanaa naheen achchhaa
[Residing in someone's heart and irritating them is not nice]
nigaahon ko zalak de de kar chhoop jaanaa naheen achchhaa
[giving a look/glimpses of self and then hiding is not right]
ummeedon ke khile gulashan ko zulasaanaa naheen achchhaa
[its not right to let the flowers of expectations go waste]
humei tum been koee jachantaa nahee, hum kyaa kare
[i dont like any one other than u!, what shall i do]

mohabbat kar to loon lekin mohabbat raas aaye bhee
[i can love u but the love maynot feel the same]
dilon ko boz lagate hain kabhee julfon ke saaye bhee
[sometimes the heart may also feel the weight of the shadows of hair]
hajaaro gam hain is duniyaan mein apane bhee paraaye bhee
[There are thousands of sorrows in this world, mine as well as others]
mohabbat hee kaa gam tanahaa nahee, hum kyaa kare
[Not only is the sorrow of love the only one, wht shall I do]

buzaa do aag dil kee yaa ise khulakar hawaa de do
[take the flames that are burning in my heart or give it high hope]
jo is kaa mol de paaye, use apanee wafaa de do
[the one who is worthy of it, give him your love]
tumhaare dil mein kyaa hain bas humei itanaa pataa de do
[what is in your heart just let me be aware of that much]
ke abh tanahaa safar katataa nahee, hum kyaa kare
[That now on my own the journey seems never ending, what shall i do]

MOHAMED RAFI: THE VERSATILE GENIOUS

I know that the help in these translation has been immensely appreciated, I tried to convey a "letter of thanks" to Saeed, and the following is his response:

quote:
Abdool bhai - no need for thanks - I did what I did coz of what I felt - joy in making these beautiful thoughts known to people who would appreciate them. I had a friend who would translate arabic songs for me and as you know some of the arabic poetry goes way back - i learn that one can get hooked on cross culture poetry - for the sheer novelty .. correction, newness of it. So here be I paying back what I received.

I am a visitor to the forum like Lynn and like most of the contributors - all share the same desire to ..er.. share. koff, koff. So lay off the thanks, please.
Am glad you are glad.

MOHAMED RAFI: THE VERSATILE GENIOUS

The thread continues.....

Rafi was the voice of film's story, script and characters. Almost all music directors used Rafi's voice to give life and a magical quality to their tunes. Rafi used to build concept about the actors for whom the songs were recorded and went to great lengths to change his style to suit the actor and the scene. He dubbed his voice as emotion that the song was expected to present in character, story and situation. It was said in the world of Bombay's film industry that no one had ever heard of a music director saying that a particular song was not Rafi's type. From classical tunes, gazals, quawalis to the wild 'yaahoo' style songs, Rafi's range was fantastic

Petal, beautiful rendition by Rafi/Lata, surprising Rafi died in 1980 and this song,
was released with movie in 1982, movie certainly took a long time, for release:

Thank you Lynn, we do appreciated all the help
that were given to us, as a helping fan had said
"its a feeling of pleasure for us, hindilyrics ppl, to help ya understand the Hindi songs, and specially, when its about Mohd. Rafi song, it deservs a special treat, at least from my side" neo

A little more to go,as we would need to put all 100 with translations in numeric order, and a final write up before archieve:

MOHAMED RAFI: THE VERSATILE GENIOUS

No matter how hard we try to get the best of Rafi, there are songs that at a later stage, we would wished that we had included; songs like

1) YAHAAN MAIN AJNABEE HOON..............JAB JAB PHOOL KHILE
