Hema Malini on the power of dance and more



Her flawless dance depiction of Lord Narsimha killing demon Hiranyakashyapu perfectly reflects her philosophy. Hema Malini still strongly believes that it is her dance that influences her mindset the most, which was more than apparent when she encouraged women at Art of Living’s International Women’s Conference in Bangalore over the weekend to fight injustice and oppression of any kind.

“Coming from an orthodox background, there was little scope to explore the outside world. Dance not only brought me closer to reality, but also gave me strength and confidence,” says Hema. Accompanied by her daughters Esha and Ahana, the actor/danseuse put forth a spectacular three and a half hour performance in Bangalore.

For someone who is still being wooed by Bollywood, the actress strives hard to maintain a balance between the glamorous image her job demands and her dance, which gives her a chance to connect with herself.

“There are many women out there who kill their aspirations just to fulfil their family’s stipulations, which I think is totally unfair. Especially with creative sources of expression like dance or music, it is almost sinful to defy a God-given talent,” she asserts.

And that exactly is what she has inculcated in her daughters. “I think it is very easy to get carried away by fame and affluence. Dance is something that keeps both my daughters rooted to their values,” says Hema about her daughters who put together a lovely Odissi performance, while she stuck to her signature Bharatanatyam.

The experience of sharing stage with her daughters was much more enhancing for her than going for IIFA in Yorkshire. “It’s difficult to spend much time with my daughters, but such shows bind us. It has been a great experience,” she says overwhelmed.
