TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Talat Mahmood (February 24, 1924 – May 9, 1998) was a popular Indian playback singer and film actor. A recipient of Padma Bhushan he is famous for his ghazals, resulting in a title of "king of ghazals" bestowed upon him by fans and critics.

Talat saab as he is now referred to, has often been described as a singer with a silky voice. His voice never suited loud songs, songs that demanded a high-pitched range. Shouting or screaming didn't suit him and so he avoided those kinds of songs too. He only sang soft, romantic, lyrical, ghazals.Talat saab went for his vocal training in Bhatkhande music college lucknow

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Early days
Talat Mahmood was born in Lucknow, India, on February 24th 1924. he was one amongst six children and his father Manzoor Mahmood ran an electrical curio store. Talat showed his musical leanings from a very young age and would enjoy sitting through all-night music soiree's listening patiently to some of the biggest names in classical Indian music then.

Talat's father was a good singer as were his sisters. But coming from a conservative Muslim background, singing was not encouraged. Talat had to choose between a career in acting and singing and staying at home. He opted for the former, though the family accepted the fact only about a decade later when the industry gained respectability. His conservative parents had objected to him becoming a singer though they also were musical people. Things only began improving when people from respectable families started joining the industry. He didn't discourage his son from singing either.

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

The 50's was the era of the Singing Star. America had Elvis Presley, England had Cliff Richard and India had Talat Mahmood ! Handsome, good looking men with fantastic voices and a distinguished style of singing that was all their own. The mere mention of their names on the silver screen was enough to pull in female crowds looking for gentle romantic fare, with clean cut story lines. Whether Elvis, Cliff or Talat, these singers were packaged and presented on the silver screen with the utmost of care. Nothing was left to chance. For them, it was nothing but the biggest producers, the biggest banners, the topmost heroines and of course, hand picked music composers to create those scintillating musical scores !

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

SINGING CAREER:

Talat apprenticed classical music under Pandit S.C.R. Bhat at Morris Music College some time in the 30s. He started his career purely as a ghazal singer in 1939. Talat Mahmood began his singing career at the age of 16 in 1939 when he began singing the Ghazals of Daag, Mir, Jigar etc. on All India Radio, Lucknow. his voice had a quality distinct from all the other singers. HMV was quick to notice this and offered talat his first disc in 1941 "sab din ek samaan nahin tha, ban jaoonga kya se kya main, iska to kuch dhyan nahin tha". indeed how prophetic were these words. little did talat know that he was soon to rise to become the greatest names in Ghazals on the Indian Sub-continent!.

His reputation as a fine and promising ghazal singer was not limited to his hometown of Lucknow, but it reached the city that proved to shape his destiny - Calcutta. The then famous ghazal singers were Ustad Barkat Ali Khan, K.L. Saigal and M.A. Rauf. The classical songs he sang were " Sapnon Ki Suhaani Duniyaa Ko " for film Shiqast and " Laage Tose Naina " for Chaandi Ki Deewar.

In 1944 came the hit "Tasveer teri dil mera behela na sakegi". The song was an overnight sensation. It's popularity was so phenomenal and unrivalled that even today it remains one of the top selling non-film discs. This disc brought talat fame throughout India and soon he was beckoned by the Calcutta film industry. Talat made cameo appearances and starred in about 16 movies, for both the Calcutta Film Industry (hub of the 1940s) and Bollywood. The 3 movies in which he starred were regional hits in Calcutta.

But fate had even bigger things in store for talat and in 1949 talat came to the Hollywood of India - Bombay/Bollywood. His name and fame had already preceded him and people in the bombay film industry were already aware of this talented singer and soon he was offered the song. His big break came with the song "Ae dil mujhe aisi jagha le chal jahan koi na ho" composed by music-composer Anil Biswas for the soundtrack of the movie "Arzoo". The song was a smash-hit and ensured the box-office success of the movie.

In talat, the music directors had found the perfect voice for the Ghazals. His diction and intonation were word perfect. his expressive style and emotional nuances were unparalleled. the mellowness, sweetness and pathos in his voice set him apart from all the other singers. Soon he was unanimously hailed as "King of Ghazals". His romantic duets and solos numbered in hundreds and hit after hit followed and Talat grew into a legend.

Talat is survived by his son Khalid Mahmood, a reputed singer in his own right.

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

The golden voice still haunts...

Although he was not prolific, Talat Mehmood remains the favourite of those who prefer soft, romantic melodies. Today, on his eighth death anniversary, V. GANGADHAR takes a trip down memory lane.

Playback singer Talat Mehmood (on the harmonium) ... noted for his romantic melodies.

EVEN THE most ardent Hindi film buffs may not remember films like "Baradari'' and "Thokar''. Or details about their music directors, Naushad and Sardar Malik. But songs from these films, "Tasveer Banata Hoon'' and "Ae Gham-e-did Kya Karoon'' are remembered and hummed to this day. Crooner Talat Mehmood, who died on this day five years ago and sang these numbers, had the unique quality of rendering such ever popular songs, which were part of unsuccessful films and composed by not-so-famous music directors. At the same time, the singer did not let down more famous music directors who, for reasons of their own, used him rather sparingly.

Every song Talat Mehmood sang for Naushad ("Babul''), Ravi ("Ek Saal'') and O. P. Nayyar ("Sone Ki Chidiya'') turned out to be super hits and are remembered to this day. "Talat Saab stood apart," observed Manohar Iyer, founder of `Keep Alive,' a Mumbai-based organisation which promotes Hindi film music in its golden period, from the 1940s to 1960s.

"There are numerous people who can sing like Mohamad Rafi, Mukesh or Kishore Kumar but hardly anyone who can recapture the softness and romantic melody of Talat Mehmood". No wonder, when melody ruled the roost in the Hindi film world, Talat Saab remained the number one singer for about seven years from 1950. He was totally identified with Dilip Kumar ("Babul'', "Daag'', "Tarana'', "Footpath'', "Sangdil'', "Shikast''), sang for Raj Kapoor ("Aashiana'', "Anhonee''), Dev Anand ("Taxi Driver''), V. Shantaram ("Parchain'', "Subah Ka Tara'') and other lesser-known heroes.

He was sought after by every music director including C. Ramchandra, Shanker-Jaikishan, Roshan, Ghulam Mohammad and Madan Mohan. This period also produced some of the most wonderful duets, pairing Talat mainly with Lata Mangeshkar and also with Asha Bhosle and Geeta Dutt. "Singing duets with Talat bhai was something special," observed Lata Mangeshkar. Around 700 songs including private recordings and ghazals in a career span of around 20 years may not be all that impressive. But quality is not judged by quantity.

Born and educated in Lucknow (Morris College), Talat Mehmood began recording for All India Radio, Lucknow, and then Calcutta. His first hit remains an evergreen hit, "Tasveer Banata Hun... Tasveer Nahin Banti''. New Theatres, Calcutta, which he joined in the early 1940s, did not provide him with much work. "Rajalakshmi'' was his first film. He recorded two songs for it. Migrating to Bombay in 1949, Talat found the response encouraging. Both Naushad and Anil Biswas claimed credit for `discovering' Talat in the 1950-releases, "Babul'' and "Arzoo'', though he sang for a 1949 film, "Rakhee'' with music score by Husanlal Bhagatram.

The next five to seven years found Talat zooming to the top with an enviable score of hits. Mohamad Rafi was establishing himself, Mukesh was just getting discovered by Raj Kapoor, and Manna Dey and Kishore Kumar were waiting in the wings.

Slim and good-looking, Talat Mehmood accepted offers to play the hero in Hindi films. Beginning with A. R. Kardar's "Dil-e-Nadan'', the singing hero acted in about 10 films which despite many hit songs, did not create an impression on the people. When I interviewed him for the first time after a concert in Ahmedabad, the singer wondered if the hero image affected his singing career. "An impression was created," he recalled, "that as a hero, I would only sing my own songs. Offers from music directors began to dry up."

From the 1960s, the direction of Hindi film music began to change. So did the attitude of successful heroes. Dilip Kumar was no longer the tragic, love-lorn hero whose personality suited the soft melodies of a Talat Mehmood. He switched over to loud roles and Naushad who composed music to most of the films, opted for Mohamad Rafi. Naushad also recorded several Talat songs for his own film, "Palki'' but had to re-record the numbers using Rafi at the insistence of the film's hero, Rajendra Kumar who had a string of silver and golden jubilees.

Finally, it was the number of hits and jubilees and identification with successful camps, which mattered, not the success of a music score.

Mukesh with much less talent, became a permanent fixture at the RK camp and was also the chosen one of successful music director, Kalyandji-Anandji. For some reason, Talat Saab could not discover and stick to such a successful camp. On the contrary, S. D. Burman who was upset at the box office failure of the critically-acclaimed Bimal Roy's "Devdas'' which had a memorable music score, wanted to replace Talat with Rafi for the next Bimalda production, "Sujata'' to render the famous number "Jalte Hain Jis Keliye''. Fortunately, Bimalda put his foot down and the Talat number became a hit.

There was no truth in the charge that he could not sing faster, jazzy numbers. Remember the foot-tapping "Andhe Jahan Se, Andhe Raatein'' from "Patita'', "Tim Tim Tim'' from "Mausi'' or "Aha Rim Jhim Taaren'' ("Usne Kaha Tha''). Perhaps, the singer could not `cultivate' people who mattered in the industry. Despite fewer films, Talat saab remained the favourite of those who preferred soft, romantic tunes. His records and later cassettes sold well, and his concerts both in India and abroad were packed.

The Afghan royal family was among his admirers. ``King Zahir Shah attended my concerts with members of his family, including women," recollected Talat Saab. "It was for the first time the royal family women patronised a concert."

Ups and downs in life did not matter to Talat Saab. In our meetings, both in Ahmedabad and Mumbai, he came out as someone who was happy with life and had warm words of praise for his fellow singers. ``There was no rat race among us," he declared. "We were all different types of singers and there was enough scope for all of us".

Our last meeting was rather painful. Victim of a stroke, the great singer could not speak. But there was no mistaking the sincerity and warmth in his eyes.

Welcome back Mits, and your contributions will be more than appreciated, it was a loss to us when you had decided to call it quits, as we had missed you considerably.

We look forward towards your more contributions to this section. I am sure that you will be happy to join with our other colleagues and myself to make this even more successful.

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Talat Mahmood and his band of trusty musicians get ready to storm the West Indies !

IN TRINIDAD:

In 1968, Talat landed to a hero's welcome in Trinidad for the West Indies Concert Tour. Thousands of fans thronged the airport. Wearing Talat Fan Club badges, waving Talat Flags and Talat Photo's, they lined the roads leading from the airport to the city. An open limousine drove Talat through a sea of his fans. The local papers headlined the concerts at Naparima Bowl, where not even boxing matches had witnessed such a frenzy for the purchase of concert tickets. The extremely popular group ' West Indies Steel Band' composed a Calypso style song " Talat Mahmood we are proud and glad, to have a personality like you here in Trinidad " to welcome Talat to Trinidad. This song was played over and over on the radio, at the airport and in all music shops in West Indies to welcome Talat to their country ! Talat's concerts at Skinner Park and Jean Pierre Complex are still talked of even today !

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Towards the late 60's the filmi ghazals and good romantic songs gave way to the electronic rhythms of the disco generation. Disliking the new trend towards loud meaningless music, Talat decided to cut down his film singing assignments but continued his non-film ghazal recordings.

As a singer, Talat has already secured a place in history. Over the years, the King of Ghazals has created a catalogue of songs for generations to come. His fan following straddles the globe. He strides like a colossus in the field of ghazals - a KING whose name is surpassed by none !!!

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Close buddies through life !
Talat with music director Madan Mohan

Talat first met music director Madan Mohan when Madan came to live in Lucknow for a while. Their love for ghazals made them good friends. In a friendly gesture, Madan promised Talat that once he went back to Bombay and signed on films as a music director he would definitely use Talat's voice. Madan was true to his promise and Talat and Madan teamed up for many hits in many films including Jahan Ara, Madhosh, Ashiana, Haqeeqat and others. They enjoyed a close bond of friendship throughout their lives.

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

TIMES OF INDIA REMEMBERS TALAT MAHMOOD SOME TEN YEARS AGO ON THE ANNIVERSAY OF HIS DEMISE:

Remembering Talat Mahmood
9 May 2008, 0331 hrs IST,Avijit Ghosh,TNN

Talat Mahmood (TOI Photo)
NEW DELHI: In his quivering voice you could hear the rustle of silk and the muffled sound of a broken heart. Few singers could put the listener in a blue mood like Talat Mahmood, who passed away on May 9 exactly 10 years ago.

And thanks to a website created by his son Khalid that gets about 1,50,000 hits every week from Indians and Pakistanis all over the world - "and a few Israelis", Khalid adds - his memory is fresh as ever.

"Talat saab came from Lucknow and his Urdu pronunciation was perfect. He could exactly reproduce a song the way a composer had conjured up in his mind. He was an original singer whose distinctive voice was near impossible to duplicate," recalls masterclass music director Khayyam.

One of the veteran music composer's memorable compositions - Shaam-e-gham ki kasam (film: Footpath) - was sung by Talat, also known as king of ghazals. Khayyam recalls that in that memorable song he had experimented with the orchestration by not using any rhythm instrument like tabla.

"We used a piano, guitar and solo vox, a basic version of the synthesizer used in those days. Recording the number took plenty of time. But Talat saab ke mathe pe shikan nahi aayee," he says.

Senior lyricist Naqsh Lyallpuri remembers a recording with the singer. The song was Zindagi kis mod pe laayi mujhe, from the film "Diwali ki Raat". Snehal Bhatkar was the music director. Says Lyallpuri, "We had only two musicians at the rehearsal. They were playing the tabla and the sitar. But the producer liked his singing so much that he said, there is no need for any other instrument. We recorded the song with just those two instruments."

Lyallpuri remembers Talat as an extremely soft spoken man. Which Khayyam affirms. "He was a perfect
gentleman. With him there was no loose talk. He was always well-dressed: his shoes shining and his trousers perfectly creased."

To honour his father's memory, Khalid Mahmood set up a website, talatmahmood.net, just a few months after the singer's death in 1998 at the age of 74. Apart from the huge number hits every day, he also gets about 200-300 emails every week.

"The choice for me was between doing a book and setting up a website. I settled for the latter because it is more accessible," says Khalid.

Talat recorded his first track way back in 1941 and sang around 750 songs in 12 languages. He also acted in over a dozen movies such as "Dil-e-Nadaan", "Lala Rukh" and "Ek Gaon Ki Kahani".

Few know that the singer-actor aroused mass hysteria when he arrived in Trinidad in West Indies on a concert tour in 1968. Fans thronged the roads from the airport to the city. The local group, West Indies Steel Band, composed a Calypso track in his honour. They sang, "Talat Mahmood we are proud and glad, to have a personality like you here in Trinidad."

Talat is long gone. But as long as the human heart knows how to fall in love and emerge with ache, his velvet
voice will live on.

Here is the first of the selection of beautiful Ghazals from the maestro with the honey-soft voice.

(1) TASVEER BANATA HOON
Movie: BARADARI
Artist: Talat Mahmood

PRETTY AS A PICTURE – MADHURI DIXIT

TASVEER BANATA HOON

tasveer banata hoon, tasveer nahiin banatii
I am drawing your picture, but it does not work
ek khwaab saa dekhaa hai, taabiir nahiin banatii
The dream I saw, it refuses to become reality

bedard mohabbat kaa itanaa saa hain afasaanaa
The story of this cruel love is not long
nazaron se milii nazare, main ho gaya diiwaanaa
Your eyes met mine, and I went crazy
ab dil ke bahalane kii, tadbiir nahiin banatii
Now there appears to be no way to appease my heart

dam bhar ke liye merii duniyaan mein chale aao
Come into my world for just a moment
tarasii huyii aakhon ko phir shakl dikhaa jaao
Show your face once more to my longing eyes
mujh se to merii bigadii takadiir nahiin banatii
I cannot fix my broken fortune on my own

IN 1941 CAME THE SMASH HIT '' TASVEER TERI DIL MERA BEHLA NA SAKEGI ''. I'TS POPULARITY WAS SO PHENOMENAL AND UNRIVALLED THAT EVEN TODAY IT REMAINS ONE OF THE TOP SELLING NON-FILM DISCS. THIS DISC BROUGHT TALAT FAME THROUGHOUT INDIA

Singer: Talat Mahmood
Lyric : Faiaz Hashmi
Music : Kamal Dasgupta

1) TASVEER TERI DIL MERA BEHLA NA SAKEGI: MP3:

1) TASVEER TERI DIL MERA BEHLA NA SAKEGI:

Tasviir terii dil meraa bahalaa na sakegii
Your photo cannot please my heart
Ye terii tarah mujh se to sharmaa na sakegii
This can never become shy in front of me like you

Main baat karuungaa to ye khaamosh rahegii
If I speak to it, it would remain silent
Siine se lagaa luu.Ngaa to ye kuchh na kahegii
It will say nothing when I clasp it to my breast
Aaraam vo kyaa degii jo taDapaa na sakegii
How can it give me solace when it cannot make me suffer

Ye aankhein hain Taharii huiin, chanchal vo nigaahein
These eyes are still, and those looks are playful
Ye haath hain sahame huye aur mast vo baahein
These hands are hesitant, and those arms are intoxicating
Parachhaa_ii to insaan ke kaam aa na sakegii
A mere image can be of no use to a real person

In honthon ko fayyaaz main kuchh de na sakuungaa
I will not be able to give anything of value to these lips
Is zulf ko main haath mein bhii le na sakuungaa
I will not be able to take these tresses in my hands
Ulajhii hu_ii raatoon ko ye sulajhaa na sakegii
It cannot calm my troubled nights

3) SEENE MEIN SULAGTE HAIN ARMAAN: MP 3:

3) SEENE MEIN SULAGTE HAIN ARMAAN

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan aankho mein udaasi chhaayi hai
Desires kindle in the heart sorrow is entrenched in my eyes
Ye aaj teri duniya se hamein Taqdeer kaha le aayi hai
Today from your world where has fate brought me

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart

Kuchh aankh mein aansoo baaki hain (Jo mere gham ke saathi hain) 2
Some tears in the eyes are still left the friends of my grief
(Ab dil hain na dil ke armaan hain)2 Bas main hu meri tanhaai hai
There is the heart but no desire of the heart just me and my lonliness

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart

Na tujhse gila koyi hamko na koyi shikaayat duniya se
I don't have to blame you no complaints to the world
(Do chaar kadam jab manzil thi)2 Qismat ne thhokar khaayi hai
When the destination was four steps away fate has pushed me

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart

Ek aisi aag lagi man mein jeene bhi na de marne bhi na de
Some type of fire was lit in my heart it won't let me live, it won't let me die
(Chup hu to kaleja jalta hai)2 Bolu to teri ruswaayi hai
If I am silent, my chest burns if I talk, then it will be your disgrace

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart

Trans:Madhuri Dixit

N.B. Ab dil hain na dil ke armaan hain
now there is no heart, and no hopes, just me and my loneliness

(Do chaar kadam jab manzil thi)2 Qismat ne thhokar khaayi hai
with the end just a few steps away, my fate has suffered a blow

Madhuri, is thankful for your observation V.

4) DIL-E-NADAAN TUJHAY HUWA KYA HAI:

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?
Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai
After all, what is the remedy for this pain?

(Hum hain mushtaaq aur woh beyzaar,)2
We are impatient, and he is disgusted
Ya-Ilaahi yeh maajra kya hai
Oh ! God, what is the matter out here

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?

(Main bhi muh mein zabaan rakhtaa hoon)2
I too have a tongue in my mouth
Kaash pooche ke mudda'aa kya hai
If only I was asked about my view

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?

(Ham ko unse wafaa ki hai ummeed)
I have hopes of faithfulness from her,
Jo nahi jaante wafa kya hai
Who knows not what faithfulness is

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?

(jan tum par nisar karta hun)2
I would give my life for you
main nahi janta dua kya hai
But I don't know how to verbally offer prayer for you

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?
Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai
After all, what is the remedy for this pain?

What but this does the mendicant say?

Maine mana ke kuch nahin "Ghalib"
I admit that it is nothing, "Ghalib"
Muft haath aaye to bura kya hai
What is bad if it comes to hand gratis?

Trans Ranjana

Mirza Ghalib, in his ghazal "Dil e nadaan" has spoken of love, justice, human values, mysticism etc., each in a different couplet. Couplets in a ghazal are like gems of a beautiful necklace the luster of which is timeless.

I was drawn to Urdu at a young age for much the same reasons. I did not have a lot of nostalgia at 14, but I found in it a power of expression that English lacked. The infinite ways in which Urdu poets create metaphors reflect the rich cultural experience of not only Islam but of many aspects of life in India. I think this is why many ghazals and songs live on forever in our minds. Unlike English pop music, the Hindi songs of 50 years ago still sound fresh and ageless. It is because of the richness of meaning and original turns of phrase that are the specialties of Urdu poets. It gives me great pleasure to explore the meanings and share what I find with my friends at GNI. I am not very good, and I am sure I am only skimming the surface of the meanings, but I am happy to what I can.

I am glad to hear that you enjoy it.

NUTAN – THESE EYES ARE SHINING, INDEED

(5) JALTE HAIN JISKE LIYE: MP 3:

Jalte hain jis ke liye teri aakhon ke diye,
for which the lamps of your eyes are shining
dhoond laya hoon wahi geet main tere liye,
I have found that song, just for you
Jalte hain jis ke liye
for which they shine

dil main rakh lena ise haathon se ye chhute na kahin,
keep it in your heart, let it never slip from your hands
geet nazuk hai mera sheeshe se bhi toote na kahin, (2)
my song is more delicate than glass, let it not break
gungunaunga yehi geet main tere liye,
I shall keep crooning this song for you
Jalte hain jis ke liye
for which they shine

jab talak na yeh tere ras ke bhare honton se mile,
Until it meets with your succulent lips
yun hi awara phirega yeh teri zulfon ke tale, (2)
it will wander about under your lovely tresses
gaye jaunga yehi geet main tere liye,
and I shall keep singing this song, just for you
Jalte hain jis ke liye
for which they shine

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

His diction and intonation were word perfect. his expressive style and emotional nuances were unparalleled, the mellowness, sweetness and pathos in his voice set him apart from all the other singers. Music directors relish that natural vibration in Talat Saab voice. But those who really understood that intensity, utilized it so beautifully - to bring out romance/anguish of the ghazals.

Madan Mohan was one such brilliant composers. Salil Chaudhary is probably another.

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Mohd. Rafi, the film industry's most versatile singer and Talat Mahmood, the undisputed monarch who ruled the world of ghazals !

One of the songs that Talat Saab did was "Chal Udja Re Panchi" recorded for the the film Bhabi
For some reasons or the other the same song was done by Mohd Rafi and Rafi got the nod and his version was selected for Bhabi.
Talat Saab's version was just as well as good as Rafi's.

This song per se is not a Ghazal, but we will present this because of its Popularity:

CHAL UDJA RE PANCHI: MP 3:

Chal Ud Ja Re Panchhi Ke Ab Yeh Desh Hua Begaana
Go, fly away bird, now that this world has become a stranger

Khatam Hue Din Us Daali Ke Jis Par Tera Basera Tha
Gone are the days of that branch on which you were perched
Aaj Yahan Aur Kal Wahan Yeh Jogi Wala Phera Tha
Today here and somewhere else tomorrow, roaming like a wanderer
Ye tere jaagir nahin thi char ghari ka dhera tha
This was not your place, just a stop for a short while
Sadaa Raha Hai Is Duniya Mein Kiska Aab-O-Dana
Who, in this world, has lived forever
Chal Ud Ja Re Panchhi ...
fly away bird...

Toone Tinka Tinka Chunkar Nagri Ek Basaai
You have collected bit by bit straws and made your nest
Baarish Mein Terii Bheegi Aankhen Dhoop Men Garmi Khai
In rain your eyes have got wet and suffered the heat of sun
Gham Na Kar Jo Terii Mehnat Koi Kaam Na Aayi
do not grief if your laborious task is not fruitful
Achha Hai Kuchh Le Jaane Se Dekar Hi Kuchh Jaana
It is better to give than to take something away
Chal Ud Ja Re Panchhi ...
Go bird, fly away...

Bhool Ja Ab Voh Mast Hava, Voh Udna Daali Daali
Forget now those intoxicating breezes, those flutters from branch to branch
Jag Ki Aankh Ka Kaanta Ban Gayi Chaal Teri Matwali
Your strut has become a thorn in the eyes of the world
Kaun Bhala Us Baag Ko Poochhe, Ho Na Jiska Maali
Who will ask for that garden that has no gardener
Teri Kismat Mein Likha Hai Jeete Ji Mar Jaana
Your fate has been written to live a lifeless life

Chal Ud Ja Re Panchhi Ke Ab Yeh Desh Hua Begaana
Go, fly away bird, now that this world has become a stranger

Rote Hain Woh Pankh Pakheru Saath Tere Jo Khele
In tears are those birds who once played with you
Jinke Saath Lagaye Toone Armaanon Ke Mele
with whom you shared so many dreams
Bheegi Ankhiyon Se Hi Unki Aaj Duaen Le Le
with whom you shared so many dreams
Kisko Pata Ab Is Nagri Mein Kab Ho Tera Aana
Who knows now when you will return to this city
Chal Ud Ja Re Panchhi ...
Go bird, fly away....

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

TALAT MAHMOOD - Andhe jahan ke andhe raaste PATITA

HOW CAN WE FEATURE TALAT, AND LEAVE OUT THIS GEM:?

andhe jahaan ke andhe raasate, jaaye to jaaye kahaa
duniyaa to duniyaa, too bhee paraayaa, hum yahaa naa wahaa

jeene kee chaahat nahee, mar ke bhee raat nahee
is paar aansoo, us paar aahe, dil meraa bejoobaan
andhe jahaan ke andhe raasate, jaaye to jaaye kahaa

hum ko naa koee bulaaye, naa koee palake bichhaye
aye gam ke maaro manjil wahee hai, dam ye toote jahaa
andhe jahaan ke andhe raasate, jaaye to jaaye kahaa

aagaaj ke din teraa, anjaam tay ho chookaa
jalate rahe hai, jalate rahenge, ye jameen aasamaan
andhe jahaan ke andhe raasate, jaaye to jaaye kahaa

The bird here refers to the soul.

Sadaa Raha Hai Is Duniya Mein Kiska Aab-O-Dana
Who, in this world, has lived forever
Chal Ud Ja Re Panchhi ...
fly away bird...

Just as the bird move form tree to tree freely, so does man in the world. We are reminded that we are destined to live here only for a few days.

Go bird, fly away...

Just as the bird builds its nest so too man built his home. Likewise he struggled for his family but in the end he has to leave family and wealth.. but in leaving everthing behind, he now goes forward to that which is alloted for him.

Those birds who played with you are your friends and realatives. They cherished your dreams with you. Who knows when you take birth again in which home and which city.

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Film : Patita
Singer: Talat Mahmood
Lyrics: Shailendra
Music : S.D.Burman

HAIN SABSE MADHUR WO GEET JINHEN

Hain sabase madhur wo geet jinhen,
Ham dard ke sur men gaate hain,
Ham dard ke sur men gaate hain;
Jab had se guzar jaati hai khushi,
Aansoo bhi chhalak te aate hain,
Aansoo bhi chhalak te aate hain;

Hain sab se madhur wo geet

(Pahaloo men paraaye dard basa ke,
Hasana hasaana sikh zara,
Tu hasana hasaana sikh zara)2
Toofaan se kah de ghir ke uthe,
Ham pyaar ke deep jalaate hain,
Ham pyaar ke deep jalaate hain;

Hain sab se madhur wo geet

(Kaanton men khile hain phool hamaare,
Rang bhare aramaanon ke,
Rang bhare aramaanon ke)2
Naadaan hain jo in kaanton se,
Daaman ko bachaaye jaate hain,
Daaman ko bachaaye jaate hain;

Hain sab se madhur wo geet

(Jab gham ka andhera ghir aaye,
Samajho ke savera doornahin,
Samajho ke savera door nahin)2
Har raat ka hai paigham yahi,
Taare bhi yehi Doharaate hain,
Taare bhi yehi doharaate hain

Hain sab se madhur wo geet

Another one that is not a ghazal per se, but was very popular in its heyday

Bahenji RQ, it is very rare, imagine these singers were so young, even if you try to pick them out (apart from Rafi) it will be very hard, as they were so young at the time.

Boss,
This has been somewhat a memorable one for me. It is a thread that gives the viewers a new concepts of Ghazals and the Beauty of the Romantic Language of Urdu, and how the exponents uses that language to fascinate us all, making us believe that the Hindi/Urdu Poets were the best that ever walk this earth.

Originally, when we had embarked on this, it was the intention to just do a few ghazals and then leave it as it is, but the request to continue this effort was stronger than the urge not to, and so we kept it going.

There are so many who had, and is continuing to give us their valuable time and effort to
make this a success, and without the contributions and help of those persons, Ghazals could not have been what it is. Ranjana and Venkat has poured their heart and souls into this project and we can never ever say "Thanks" to them for making us understand the meaning of the Poetical Lyrics penned by some of the greatest poets that ever walked on this earth.

Our satisfaction on this project has been measured in term of its successes, what a pleasure it has been to google "Ghazals Topics" and to see that we have been there for the longest while, someone thinks that our effort has the "pizaz" to draw viewers and at the same time to give invaluable information on the once dying art of Ghazals, and we are thankful for the exposure.

Amral, to you what can I say? You have given us the encouragement to go to greater heights, and I am sure that this insight of yours means more to you than any monetary gains. It holds a place next to your wonderful family, that has allowed you the time and
effort to continue the thing that you so love...GNI.

Gosh I am rambling, I need not say more but to reflect.........

When I did this one there was so much tears in my eyes, my world was crumbling in front of me, but I have since learned to live through a difficult period, and thanks to the kind words of our circle of colleagues and friends at GNI.

What a wonderful accomplishment. Congratulations Asj.... cheers

Actualy.."Mujhe tum nazar se" is one my favs... Smile

Urdu mixed with the Hindi makes the language so romantic. The translations certainly enhances ones appreciation for the poetry and meanings.

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

The soul of vintage music can only be felt when you close your eyes while listening to it; as melody doesn't require any celluloid visuals to prove its worth. You will realise this when you listen to the songs of Talat Mahmood.

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

6) VIDEO: YEH HAVA YEH RAAT YEH CHANDNI

MADHUBALA, ETERNAL BEAUTY

ye hawaa, ye raat, ye chaandnii
this breeze, the night, and the moonlight
teri ek adaa pe nisaar hain
are ready to give their lives for one gesture from you
mujhe kyun na ho teri aarzoo,
why should I not desire you?
teri justajoo mein bahaar hai
just meeting you is like springtime

tujhe kyaa khabar hai, o bekhabar
how can you know, naïve one
teri ek nazar mein hai kya asar
the effect of just one glance from you
jo gazab mein aaye to qahr hai
when it is in anger, it is a calamity
jo ho meharban to qaraar hai
when it is kind, there is peace

teri baat baat hain dilnashiin
everything about you impresses
koyi tujh se badh ke nahin hasiin
there is no one more beautiful
hai kalii kalii pe jo mastiyaan
like the intoxication in every flower
teri aankh kaa ye khumaar hai
your eyes inebriate all who see them

7) KABHI NEKI BHI USKE JI MEIN: MP3

Kabhii nekii bhii usake jii mein gar aa jaaye hai mujhase
Some day, she feels in her heart to do something good for me
Jafaayein karake apanii yaad sharmaa jaaye hai mujhase
But, having tormented me, she feels shame and holds back

Udhar vo badagumaanii hai, idhar ye naatavanii hai
There, she is doubtful and skeptical; here, I am weak
Naa puuchhaa jaaye hai unse, na bolaa jaaye hai mujhse
She cannot bring herself to ask, neither can I tell her

Sambhalane de mujhe ae naaumiidii, kyaa qayaamat hai
Let me recover from my despair, what a calamity!
Ki daamaane Khayaale yaar chhuutaa jaaye hai mujhase
That even the comfort in the thoughts of my lover has abandoned me

Qayaamat hai ki hove muddaii kaa hamsafar ˜Ghalib'
The cruelty is that Ghalib's lover has gone to his rival,
Vo kaafir, jo Khudaa ko bhii na sau.npaa jaaye hai mujhase
I worship her as my idol, how can I entrust her to Allah?

Lyrics: Mirza Ghalib

8) PHIR MUJHE DIDA\-E\-TAR YAD AYA

phir mujhe dida-e-tar yaad aya
once more I remembered the tearful eyes
dil jigar tishana-e-fariyaad aya
my heart was thirsty from complaining
phir mujhe dida-e-tar yaad aya
once more I remembered the tearful eyes

dum liya tha na qayamat ne hanoz (2)
The Final Chaos had not yet begun
phir tera waqt-e-safar yaad aya
I remembered again your passing this way
phir mujhe dida-e-tar yaad aya
once more I remembered the tearful eyes

zindagi yuun bhi guzar hi jati (2)
life would have continued just like this,
kyuun tera rahaguzar yaad aya
why did I remember where you live?
phir mujhe dida-e-tar yaad aya
once more I remembered the tearful eyes

phir tere kuche ko jata hai khayaal (2)
The mind goes once again to your street
dil-e-ghamgushta magar yaad aya
but I remembered the sadness my heart suffered
phir mujhe dida-e-tar yaad aya
once more I remembered the tearful eyes

Trans: Venkat

Translator's Note:

Qayaamat is a word found in many Urdu poems. In Al Quran, it is said that when the end of the world comes, there will be a period of extreme chaos. Hence I have translated it as the Final Chaos. Poets writing about love usually refer to the loss of their love as 'Qayaamat', which seems like the end of the world to a true lover.

It is used in other contexts as in 'all is lost', a kind of "alas".

Close buddies through life ! Music Director Madan Mohan:

Talat first met music director Madan Mohan when Madan came to live in Lucknow for a while. Their love for ghazals made them good friends. In a friendly gesture, Madan promised Talat that once he went back to Bombay and signed on films as a music director he would definitely use Talat's voice. Madan was true to his promise and Talat and Madan teamed up for many hits in many films including Jahan Ara, Madhosh, Ashiana, Haqeeqat and others. They enjoyed a close bond of friendship throughout their lives.

Thanks again RQ always a pleasure listening and taking the comments from someone as knowlwdgeable as you are.

Its is a pity that we could not have accessed the Talat Ghazals in MP3 recordings for our readers delights, so soothing at time listening to Ghazals from the golden era, bringing that nostalgic memories to the fore once more.

Hi dids, so wonderful that "Ghazals" can make you remember those moments of joy spent with your dad.

Lets hope that he lives to hit that century, and well play with his grands and still sings Talat Mahmood's

"Tasveer banata hoon, tasveer nahiin banatii"
I am drawing your picture, but it does not work

The Quiver: Anil Biswas on Talat Mahmood
- the time of discovery

I have always kept an eye open for fresh talents and fresh voices, and it was during one of those try outs that a tall lanky man from Calcutta said he was desirous of acting in films and as he had already sung in Calcutta as Tapan Kumar, he could break through. I sized him up and asked him to sing a song, and as he started off, I was mesmerized. His voice didnt have any classical base, but his voice was such that you just felt like closing your eyes and listening. I asked him to come the next day saying I would give him a song- and he better forget his acting for the time. The next day, as he sang, I was bemused. That beautiful quiver in his voice which had attracted me was missing. I stopped him and when asked about it, Talat replied "Dada, everyone says my voice shivers - I was trying to correct it". I was furious and asked him to get out and get the voice I had chosen - the Talat Mahmood I had chosen. He immediately obliged - and at the end of the rehearsal, I told him, "Thats how you will sing from now" - and he did. From then on he never did look back - at least not as long as I was there.

That song was "Ae dil mujhe aisi jagah le chal" in "Arzoo" on Dilip Kumar. He became The voice of the Tragedy King and the pathos in Talat's voice so ideally suited the tragic image that Dilip Kumar developed for himself.

Ae dil mujhe aisi jagah le chal

THE VIDEO:
AYE-DIL-MUJHE-AISI-JAGAH

Film : Arzoo
Singer: Talat Mahmood
Music : Anil Biswas
Lyrics:

(Aye dil mujhe aaisi jagah le chal jahaan koi naho)
Apna paraaya meharbaan naa-meharbaan koi na ho
Aye dil mujhe aaisi jagah le chal jahaan koi naho

(Ja kar kahi kho jaau main,
Neend aaye aur so jaau main
Neend aaye aur so jaau main)2
(Duniya mujhe dhoondhe magar mera nishaan koi na ho)2

Aye dil mujhe aaisi jagah le chal

(Ulfat ka badla mil gaya,
Vo gam luta vo dil gaya,
Vo gam luta vo dil gaya )2
(Chalna hain sab se door door ab kaarvaan koi naho)

Apna paraaya meharbaan naa-meharbaan koi naho

Aye dil mujhe aaisi jagah le chal..

This one is not a Ghazal per se, as Ven would rightly say
But since we are featuring Talat, I could not resist bringing this to the fore:

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

"I think I had better give up singing. How can I dare open my mouth so long as such a perennially romantic voice is around !", said Kishore Kumar after listening to Talat Sahab's voice. The above statement of a legend like Kishoreda is more than enough to fathom the quality of Talat Sahab's voice. He was known as the 'King of Ghazals' and his voice was considered as the 'Golden Voice'.

13) SHUKRIYA AI PYAR TERA: MP 3:

He strides like a colossus in the field of ghazals - a KING whose name is surpassed by none !!!

Shukriyaaa, Shukriyaaaa

GHAZALS:

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

On his visit to India Mehdi Hassan revealed when he reached Talat Mahmood's residence that "It was through the vocals of Talat Saab that I discovered the goldmine in my throat. His songs like 'Ek main hoon ek meri bekasi ki shaam hai' and 'Husn walon ko na dil do ye mita dete hain' had left a lasting impression on me. It was whilst singing these two Talat numbers on stage in the early years of my singing career, that I held an audience of 10,000 in Pindi spellbound ! Believe it or not, the moment I completed singing these two Talat hits, the Pindi audience showered me with money and in a trice I had collected almost about Rs.14,000 ! All this, was of course, courtesy Talat Saab ! "

GHAZALS:

PANKAJ UDAS ON TALAT SAAB:

"Whenever there is a discussion on ghazals only one name comes to your lips - that of Shahenshah e Ghazal Janab Talat Mahmood ! I am very much influenced by him and his music. His singing style, his soft velvety voice, his sweet, emotion filled, tuneful film songs, geets and ghazals..... a voice so sweet that you can listen to it for hours on end..... and you get that feeling of sweet nectar being poured into your ears ! GHAZALS:

In 1979, Talat performed at the world renowned Royal Albert Hall, London, selling out all tickets
2 weeks before the concert date! Talat was the second playback singer after Lata Mangeshkar to
be permitted to perform at this historical venue. Here, Talat waves to a capacity crowd of his ardent
and ever-loving fans after his hugely successful concert.

GHAZALS:

Legendary singer died on May 9 ten years ago

It was on this day (May 9) eleven years ago that legendary singer Talat Mahmood (pictured left) died. At that time his daughter Sabina, who lives in Poland, had not been able to reach Mumbai to see her father's body.

Sabina's brother Khalid did not wait for her and her husband Riki Rana for the funeral. Many of Mahmood's admirers felt let down because they could not pay their last respects to the legendary singer.

To pay homage to her father and to overcome her grief, Sabina collected many of Mahmood's fans in Poland for a programme in his memory on Friday evening. The event began with a performance by Rana of the singer's favourite song "Seene mein sulagte hein arman" from the movie "Tarana". The song was composed by Anil Biswas, the music director who introduced Mahmood to Bollywood in 1949.

There was hardly a dry eye during the two hours that Rana sang many great numbers of his father-in-law. Still the audience wanted more.

Rana concluded the programme with "Hain sab se madhur vo geet jinhe, hum dard ke sur mein gate hein" (Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thoughts).

"If Riki is so good then what about Talat Mahmood? He must have been a king in his time. The pathos of his songs has been heart touching," said Janusz Krzyzowski, author of "Bollywood Poetry" and president of the India Polish Cultural Committee.

Surender Zahid, an Urdu poet living in Poland, was of the opinion that real ghazal singing had died with Mahmood.

"Whether it was Mehdi Hassan or Jagjit Singh, all the great ghazal singers have consciously or unconsciously imitated Talat Mahmood. His greatest contribution was his selection from classical Urdu poetry.

"The works of great poets like Ghalib, Mir, Daag and Faiz were interpreted in a new manner whenever Talat Mahmood sang them. He was a purist to the core and his diction was so sublime...almost unique," said Zahid.

Sabina related many incidents of life with her father, who fondly called her Shoby.

She remembered how she once forced Mahmood to attend a concert by Kishore Kumar, who was highly flattered that such a great artiste had come to hear him sing and invited him on stage.

On another occasion, when the Saudi Arabian consulate in Mumbai refused to give a visa to Sabina to accompany him for his concert, Mahmood threatened to cancel his programme. In no time the visa was arranged for Sabina by the organisers in Jeddah.

GHAZALS:

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Jahanara was the film in which Talat had his last burst of glory with ghazals like phir wohi shaam, teri aankh ke aansoon pee jaoon, main teri nazar ka saroor hoon. With mere sharek-e-safar ab tera khuda hafi (Wali Aazam), Talat bid goodbye to Bollywood.

Chain-smoking gradually took a toll of Talat’s silken-soft voice. At the fag end of his career, forget singing, Talat could not even speak properly.

It is not as if there were no other good ghazal singers during or after Talat’s time. There are Jagjit Singh-Chitra Singh, Anoop Jalota, Pankaj Udhas, Peenaz Masani, Talat Aziz, Ashok Khosla and others. But hardly anyone has been able to match Talat’s caressing style in gham-e-zindagi ka yaa rabb na mila koi kinara. It really hurt Talat to see the sudden change in tastes and tunes. The fusion of Indian music and the western synthesiser brought the age of ear-splitting rather than the soul-stirring ghazal. Talat died a depressed and dejected man seeing this downslide of music.

Bahenji, it is emotional, dont know what to say, but so many deserves the credit for the effort, put into this thread.

Remember when Dev and a few others discussed this, it was meant for just a few posts with Ghazals, but this has turned out bigger than we could ever imagined, so many South Asians visits and are still visiting.

Wish that Ranjana, would have been here, to bask in the glory of all her effort in translations.

Ven, where are you? I guess still busy, so many has contributed.

RQ Bahenji......thanks.

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Movie : Jahan Ara (1964)
Music : Madan Mohan
Singer: Talat Mahmood
Lyrics: Rajendar Krishan

9) PHIR VOHII SHAAM VAHII GHAM VAHII TANHAII HAI MP3:

(Phir vohii shaam vahii Gam vahii tanahaai hai
Again the same evening, the same hurt, the same loneliness
Dil ko samajhaane terii yaad chalii aai hai)2
The memory of you has arrived, to make my heart understand

Phir vohii shaam
Again the same evening….

(Phir tasavvur tere pahaluu mein bithaa jaaegaa)2
Once more my imagination will be spent by your side
Phir gayaa vaqt gharii bhar ko palat aaegaa
Once more the bygone times will return for a moment
Dil bahal jaaegaa aakhir ko to saudaai hai
the heart will be appeased, then comes the madness

Phir vohii shaam vahii Gam vahii tanahaai hai
Again the same evening, the same hurt, the same loneliness
Dil ko samajhaane terii yaad chalii aai hai
The memory of you has arrived, to make my heart understand

Phir vohii shaam
Again the same evening….

(Jaane ab tujh se mulaaqaat kabhii ho ke na ho)2
who knows whether I will ever meet with you again
Jo adhuurii rahe vo baat kabhii ho ke na ho
the things not yet done, will they ever happen?
Merii manzil terii manzil se bichhar aai hai
my path has veered from yours

Phir vohii shaam vahii Gam vahii tanahaai hai
Again the same evening, the same hurt, the same loneliness
Dil ko samajhaane terii yaad chalii aai hai
The memory of you has arrived, to make my heart understand

Phir vohii shaam
Again the same evening….

(Phir terii zulf se rukhasaar kii baatein hongii)2
again I will talk with your tresses about your beautiful face
Hijr kii raat magar pyaar kii baatein hongii
it will be the end of the world, but we will talk of love
Phir muhabbat mein tarapane kii qasam khaai hai
once again I have sworn to suffer in your love

Phir vohii shaam vahii Gam vahii tanahaai hai
Again the same evening, the same hurt, the same loneliness
Dil ko samajhaane terii yaad chalii aai hai
The memory of you has arrived, to make my heart understand

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Amrita Rao

Movie : Parchaiyan
Music : C Ramchandra
Singer: Talat Mahmood
Lyrics :Anjaan

10) WOH ZALIM PYAR KA JAANE: MP3

Mohabbat hi na jo samjhe, Woh zaalim pyaar kya jaane,
"the one who does not understand friendship,
how can that heartless one know love?"
Nikalatee dil ke taaron se, Jo hai jhankaar kya jaane,
how can she understand the melody that comes from my heartstrings?

Use to qatl karna aur tadpaana hi aata hai
she knows only how to slay me and make me suffer
Galaa kiska kata kyunkar kataa talvaar kya jaane
whose neck was cut, and why, the sword can never know

Mohabbat hi na jo samjhe, Woh zaalim pyaar kya jaane,
"the one who does not understand friendship,
how can that heartless one know love?"

Davaa se faayda hoga ki hoga zehar-e-qaatil se
will the potion help, or the poison?
Maraz ki kyaa davaa hai ye koi beemaar kya jaane
what indeed is the cure? How can the ailing one know?

Mohabbat hi na jo samjhe, Woh zaalim pyaar kya jaane,
"the one who does not understand friendship,
how can that heartless one know love?"

Karo fariyaad sar takrao apni jaan de daalo
keep moaning, bang your head, give up your life
Tadapte dil ki haalat husn ki deewaar kya jaane
how can the wall ever understand the pangs of love?

Mohabbat hi na jo samjhe, woh zaalim pyaar kya jaane
"the one who does not understand friendship,
how can that heartless one know love?"
Nikalati dil ke taaron se, jo hai jhankaar kya jaane
how can she understand the melody that comes from my heartstrings?

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE: Continues...

11) SAB KUCH LUTA KE HOSH MEIN: MP 3:

karte rahe khizaa se hum sauda bahaar ka
I traded away my youth for the autumn
badlaa diya to kya, yeh diya un ke pyaar ka
Is this some way to return her love?

(sab kuch lutaa ke hosh mein aye to kya kiyaa)2
Awaking finally after losing all, what have I done?
dil ne agar charaag jalaaye to kyaa kiyaa
if my heart burned a candle , what use was it?

sab kuch lutaa ke hosh mein aye to kya kiyaa
Awaking finally after losing all, what have I done?

(hum badanaseeb pyaar kee rusawaaee ban gaye)2
I had no luck, I brought shame to love itself
khud hi lagaa ke aag (tamaashaaee ban gaye)2
having set fire to it myself, I became a joke
daaman se ab yeh shole bujhaaye to kyaa kiyaa
if I put out the fire now, what use is it?

dil ne agar charaag jalaaye to kyaa kiyaa
if my heart burned a candle , what use was it?
sab kuch lutaa ke hosh mein aye to kya kiyaa
Awaking finally after losing all, what have I done?

(le le ke haar phoolon ke, aayee to thi bahaar)2
Spring came to my life with garlands of flowers
nazare uthhaa ke hum ne hi, (dekhaa na yek baar)2
but I never looked up to see them even once
aankhon se ab ye parade hataye to kyaa kiyaa
now the scales have fallen from my eyes, what is the use?

dil ne agar charaag jalaaye to kyaa kiyaa
if my heart burned a candle , what use was it?
sab kuch lutaa ke hosh mein aye to kya kiyaa
Awaking finally after losing all, what have I done?

12) HUM SAY AAYA NA GAYA: MP 3:

Ham Se Aayaa Na Gayaa Tum Se Bulaaya Naa Gayaa
I could not come, and you could not call me
Fasalaa Pyaar Mein Donon Se Mitaayaa Naa Gayaa
the distance between us in love could not be overcome

Vo Gharii Yaad Hai Jab Tum Se Mulaaqaat Hui
I remember the time when we first met
Ek Ishaaraa Huaa Do Haath Badhe Baat Hui
one sign, two hands reached out, that was that
Dekhate Dekhate Din Dhal Gayaa Aur Raat Hui
the day went by just looking at you, and night fell
Vo Samaan Aaj Talak Dil Se Bhulaya Naa Gayaa
that moment is still fresh in my memory

Ham Se Aya Na Gaya
I could not come, and you could not call me

Kyaa Khabar Thi Ke Mile Hain To Bichharane Ke Liye
how could I know that we met only to fall apart again
(Qismaten Apanii Banaaii Hain Bigarane Ke Liye)2
our luck smiled on us, only to break up again
Pyaar Kaa Baag lagaayaa Thaa UjaDane Ke Liye
we created the garden of love, only to lay it to ruin again
Is Tarah UjaDaa Ke Phir Se Basaayaa Naa Gayaa
such was the ruin, that we could not put it together again

Ham Se Aya Na Gaya
I could not come, and you could not call me

Yad Rah Jati Hai Aur Vaqt Guzar Jata Hai
Memories remain, but time passes by
Phul Khilata Hai aur Khil Ke Bikhar Jata Hai
a flower blooms, only to wither away again
Sab Chale Jate Hain, kab Darde Jigar Jata Hai
everyone leaves, but when will the pain go?
Dag Jo Tune Diya Dil Ne Mitaya Na Gaya
the hurt you left in my heart cannot be erased again

Ham Se Aya Na Gaya ...
I could not come, and you could not call me

A preview of another of Talat's Gem:

MERE YAAD MEIN TUM NA:

Meri yaad mein tum na, aansoo bahaana
Na jee ko jalaana, mujhe bhool jaana
Samajhna ke tha ek, sapna suhaana
Woh guzra zamaana, mujhe bhool jaana

Meri yaad mein

(Juda meri manzil, juda teri raahen)2
Milengi na ab teri meri nigaahen
Mujhe teri duniya se, hai door jaana
Na jee ko jalaana, mujhe bhool jaana

Meri yaad mein

(Yeh ro ro ke kehta hai, toota hua dil)2

Meri yaad mein

13) AA TERI TASVEER BANAALON: MP 3:

aa teri tasaveer bana loon main apni taqdeer bana loon
come, let me draw a picture of you, let me make you my destiny
dil ke kore kaagaz par ulfat ki lakeer bana loon
on the blank page of my heart, let me draw lines of rapture

aa teri tasaveer bana loon ...
come, let me draw a picture of you, let me make you my destiny

(rang hamaare teri javaani ban jaaye ek prem kahaani)2
my palette will be your youth, may it be a story of love
door kisi ko lene ja ke sun loon aur suna loon
that I spread far and wide, and that I hear told

aa teri tasaveer bana loon main apni taqdeer bana loon
come, let me draw a picture of you, let me make you my destiny

(baal hain baadal jaise kaale saagar se naina matavaale)2
tresses like the dark clouds, the eyes with the intoxication of wine
tere gulaabi gaalon se ji karata hai rang chura loon
the heart tells me to steal the colours from your rosy cheeks

aa teri tasaveer bana loon main apni taqdeer bana loon
come, let me draw a picture of you, let me make you my destiny
dil ke kore kaagaz par ulfat ki lakeer bana loon
on the blank page of my heart, let me draw lines of rapture

14) MERE YAAD MEIN TUM NA:

Meri yaad mein tum na, aansoo bahaana
do not shed tears when thinking of me
Na jee ko jalaana, mujhe bhool jaana
do not kindle the flame in your heart, just forget me
Samajhna ke tha ek, sapna suhaana
just think that it was all only a beautiful dream
Woh guzra zamaana, mujhe bhool jaana
those days gone by, just forget me.

Meri yaad mein
when you think of me

(Juda meri manzil, juda teri raahen)2
your destiny is yours, my road is elsewhere
Milengi na ab teri meri nigaahen
your eyes will no longer meet mine
Mujhe teri duniya se, hai door jaana
I have to go far away from your world
Na jee ko jalaana, mujhe bhool jaana
do not kindle the flame in your heart, just forget me

Meri yaad mein
when you think of me

(Yeh ro ro ke kehta hai, toota hua dil)2
Crying all the while, my broken heart says
Nahin hoon main teri mohabbat ke kaabil
I am not worthy of your love
Mera naam tak apne, lab pe na laana
do not even bring my name to your lips
Na jee ko jalaana, mujhe bhool jaana
do not kindle the flame in your heart, just forget me

AND NOW: THE MASTER HIMSELF "TALAT MAHMOOD"

SINGER: TALAT MAHMOOD
MUSIC : NAUSHAD
LYRICS: .

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

ANOTHER PREVIEW IN THE WORKS:

Movie : Babul (1950)
Singer: Talat Mohamed
Music : Naushad
Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni

MERA JEEVAN SAATHI: MP 3:

Khushi ke sath duniya mein, Hazaron gam bhi hote hain
Jahan bajati hain shahanai, Vahan matam bhi hote nain

(Mera jivan sathi bichhad gaya, lo khatam kahani ho gai
Lo khatam kahani ho gai)2

(Qismat ne kiye vo dil pe sitam do chahane vale mil na sake)2
(Kahane ko bahar ai thi magar do phul khushi ke khil na sake)2
Aramanon ka gulashan bigad gaya barabad javani ho gai

Lo khatam kahani ho gai

(Dil deke yahan sab har gaye duniya mein kisiki jit kahan)2
(Hothon pe hain shikave qismat ke vo pyar bhare ab git kahan)2
Jab khel hi dil ka bigad gaya har bat purani ho gai

Lo khatam kahani ho gai

Mera jivan sathi bichhad gaya, lo khatam kahani ho gai

Lo khatam kahani ho gai

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Mera Jeevan Saathi Bichad Gaya Lo Khatam Kahani Ho Gayee
Album- Babul
Year- 1950
M.D- Naushad
Lyrics- Shakeel Badayuni
Duration- Original Version 3:23, 1980's Version 3:41, Concert Version 3:27

If Naushad created the perfect tunes for the golden era of HFM, only Shakeel Badayuni could transcend the mental boundaries involved in penning lyrics that would do justice to Naushad's perfect creation. Sahir Ludhianvi and Majrooh Sultanpuri might've also contended for that position, yet one seems to feel that it was a different kind of magic altogether. The composition is gloomy & haunting, the words mesmerizing. Talat sahab's singing, doesn't necessarily shine out in the original number. In my opinion, Talat sahab has been able to put a lot more of his soulful voice, the misery and longing it epitomizes, in to the 80's version. The concert version, ranks below the 80's version, on my charts. Owing to this being a popular number, even with its shortcomings, I doubt that anyone would care. This song would be listened to just as diligently, like any other Talat song, by every faithful admirer.

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Movie : Daag 1952
Singer : Talat Mahmood
Music : Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics : Shailendra

15) KOI NAHI MERA IS DUNIYA MEIN:

Chaand ek beva ki choodi ki tarah toota hua
The moon is like a widow's bangle, broken
Har sitaara besahaara soz mein dooba hua
every star, without a companion, lost in sorrow
Gam ke baadal, ik janaaze ki tarah thahare hue
The clouds of sadness, halting like a funeral procession
Sisakiyon ke saaz par kahata hai dil rota hua
accompanied by sobs, the heart says, crying

Koi nahi mera is duniya mein aashiaan barbaad hai
there is no one in this world to call mine, the nest is ruined
Aansu bhari mujhe qismat mili hai zindagi naashaad hai
my destiny is filled with tears, my life with sorrow

(Ja hava tu rasta le apana qismat hai meri ji ke tadapanaa)2
get on your way, wind! My fate is to live in suffering
Aayi hai mere gam pe javaani roti hui ik yaad hai
my youth is a weeping memory in my sadness

Koi nahi mera is duniya mein aashiaan barbaad hai
there is no one in this world to call mine, the nest is ruined

(Sookh chuke hain aankhon ke jharane loot liya hamein daag-e-jigar ne)2
the flood in my eyes has dried up, the wound in my heart has ruined me
(Phool nahi ye zakhm khile hain)2 (aasamaan saiyyaad hai)2
these are not flowers but wounds, the skies are slinging arrows

Koi nahi mera is duniya mein aashiaan barbaad hai
there is no one in this world to call mine, the nest is ruined

(Mausam dukhon ka sar par hai chaaya mujhase juda hai khud mera saayaa)2
the mood is of sorrows, a shadow over my head, even my own shadow has left me
Ham hain akele gam ke hain mele rooh ki fariyaad hai
I am all alone, it is a festival of heartache, and a lament of my soul

Koi nahi mera is duniya mein aashiaan barbaad hai
there is no one in this world to call mine, the nest is ruined

Trans: Venkat

The Nest:
The lyrics tells the story of "the nest" Someone with his companion and their children living in a happy cheerful house where laughter and contentment fills the air.
The Children then reaches marriageable ages, and then the father with tears of happiness in his eyes, bid them farewell on their journey of something calls "life" and as fate would have it, he then losses his companion. Hence the lyrics

Koi nahi mera is duniya mein aashiaan barbaad hai
"there is no one in this world to call mine, the nest is ruined."
"the flood in my eyes has dried up, the wound in my heart has ruined me"
"my destiny is filled with tears, my life with sorrow"
"I am all alone, it is a festival of heartache, and a lament of my soul"
"get on your way, wind! My fate is to live in suffering"

The Story of my life, your life, our life, it is all about the dictates of fate:

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Film : Patita
Singer: Talat Mahmood
Lyrics: Shailendra
Music : S.D.Burman

16) HAIN SABSE MADHUR VOH GEET JINHEN: MP 3:

Hain Sabse Madhur Voh Geet Jinhen, (Hum Dard Ke Sur Mein Gaate Hai)2
The sweetest songs are those that we sing to the tune of pain
Jab Had Se Guzar Jati Hai Khushi, (Aansu Bhi Chhalakate Aate Hain)2
when our joy is beyond us, tears well in our eyes

Hain Sabse Madhur Voh Geet...
The sweetest songs are those that we sing to the tune of pain

Kanton Mein Khile Hain Phool Hamaare, (Rang Bhare Aramanon Ke)2
The colourful blooms of our desires blossom among thorns
Nadan Hain Jo In Kaanton Se, (Daaman Ko Bachaaye Jaate Hain)2
Thos who don't understand the thorns, keep trying to avoid them

Hain Sabse Madhur Voh Geet ...
The sweetest songs are those that we sing to the tune of pain

Jab Gham Ka Andhera Ghir Aaye, (Samajho Ke Savera Dur Nahiin)2
when the darkness of sorrow looms over us, remember the dawn is not far
Har Raat Ki Hai Paigham Yahin, (Tare Bhi Yahi Doharate Hain)2
every night brings us this message, the stars tell us so

Hain Sabse Madhur Vo Geet ...
The sweetest songs are those that we sing to the tune of pain

Pahalu Mein Paraaye Dard Basake, (Hansana Hansana Seekh Zaraa)2
Set aside your sorrows, and learn to laugh and make others laugh
Toofan Se Kah De Ghir Ke Uthe, (Hum Pyaar Ke Dip Jalaate Hain)2
Tell the storms to go ahead and rage, I will light the lamps of love

Hain Sabse Madhur Voh Geet Jinhen, (Hum Dard Ke Sur Mein Gaate Hai)2
The sweetest songs are those that we sing to the tune of pain

Hain Sabse Madhur Woh Geet ...
The sweetest songs are those that we sing to the tune of pain

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Movie : Babul (1950)
Singer: Talat Mohamed
Music : Naushad
Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni

17) MERA JEEVAN SAATHI: MP 3:

Khushi ke sath duniya mein, Hazaron gam bhi hote hain
along with happiness in this world, there are a thousand sorrows
Jahan bajati hain shahanai, Vahan matam bhi hote nain
where the shehnai (wedding flute) plays, there is also a dirge

(Mera jivan sathi bichhad gaya, lo khatam kahani ho gai
my life's mate has left me, the story is ended
Lo khatam kahani ho gai)2
the story has ended

(Qismat ne kiye vo dil pe sitam do chahane vale mil na sake)2
Fate dealt such a blow to our hearts, that two lovers could not meet
(Kahane ko bahar ai thi magar do phul khushi ke khil na sake)2
spring arrived in name only, two flowers of happiness could not blossom
Aramanon ka gulashan bigad gaya barabad javani ho gai
the garden of desires has withered away, the youth lost

Lo khatam kahani ho gai
the story has ended

(Dil deke yahan sab har gaye duniya mein kisiki jit kahan)2
having lost our hearts, we lost everything, who can win in this world?
(Hothon pe hain shikave qismat ke vo pyar bhare ab git kahan)2
our lips lament our fate, where are those songs of love?
Jab khel hi dil ka bigad gaya har baat purani ho gai
when the game of the heart has been lost, all else is the same old story

Lo khatam kahani ho gai
the story has ended

(Mera jivan sathi bichhad gaya, lo khatam kahani ho gai
my life's mate has left me, the story is ended
Lo khatam kahani ho gai)2
the story has ended

Movie : Jahan Ara (1964)
Singer: Talat Mohamed
Music : Madan Mohan
Lyrics: Rajinder Kishan

18) MAIN TERE NAZAR KA SUROOR HOON

Main teri nazar ka suruur huun Tujhe yaad ho ke na yaad ho
I am the light in your eyes, whether you remember or not
Tere paas rahake bhi dur huun Tujhe yaad ho ke na yaad ho
I am near you, yet so far, whether you remember or not

Main teri nazar ka.....
I am the light in your eyes

Mujhe aankh se to giraa diyaa Kaho dil se bhi kya bhulaa diyaa
I have fallen from your eyes, tell me, has your heart forgotten me, too?
Teri aashiqii ka Guruur huun Tujhe yaad ho ke na yaad ho
I am the pride of your love, whether you remember or not

Main teri nazar ka ...
I am the light in your eyes

Teri zulf hai mere haath mein Ke tu aaj bhi mere saath hai
your tresses are in my fingers, you are still with me now
Tere dil mein bhi main zaruur huun Tujhe yaad ho ke na yaad ho
and I, too, remain in your heart, whether you remember or not

Main teri nazar ka ...
I am the light in your eyes
