POET : ABDUL HAMEED ADAM
11) HUMNE HASRATON KE DAAG Abdul Hameed Adam Abdul Hameed Adam writes a very contemporary and strong prose, with his expressions not being limited to pain and complaint. He presents a variety of feelings as part of his overall style, and makes a person think about a lot of different aspects of the feelings he is trying to present. His thoughts are provocative and progressive, his words are unmistakably bold. A beloved of the aging generation of today, Adam had several collections of poetry to his credit. . |

Ghulam Ali has the combination of classical music talent and the skill to make you feel the ghazal in your heart when you hear him. Aside from singing, he has composed many of the songs himself, and other great artistes like Asha have sung his compositions beautifully. I present one ghazal that Asha has sung with feeling, but I recommend you listen first to Ghulam Ali's own voice rendering the ghazal that truly touches your heart.

I had to leave all the parties Har shakhs teraa naam le har shakhs diivaanaa teraa Everyone spoke your name, everyone was crazy about you Kuuche ko tere chhod kar jogii hii ban jaayein magar I would stay away from you, and become an ascetic, Jangal tere parbat tere bastii terii saharaa teraa But the woods are yours, the mountains, the city, and the desert too (you are everywhere) Ham aur rasm-e-bandagii aashuftagii uftaadagii I, with my worship, my derangement, and my helplessness Ehasaan hai kyaa kyaa teraa ai husn-e-beparvaa teraa All these favours are yours, my beautiful uncaring one Do ashk jaane kis liye palkoon pe aa kar Tik gaye I don't know why two tears stopped at my eyelids Altaaf kii baarish terii ikraam kaa dariyaa teraa One the torrent of your favours, the other a river of your kindness Ai bedareegh-o-be-amaan ham ne kabhii kii hai fugaan Oh rash and merciless one! Here is another Ghulam Ali classic, a moving expression of a lover's anguish by Adeem Hashmi.
In Urdu ghazals, there are two very essential ingredients. They are called Takhayyul and Taghazzul. Takhayyul (related to the word khayaal= thought), represents an image the poet presents to your mind with his words. The best examples are a completely novel situation that cleverly conveys the poet's feelings. The first verse in this ghazal is a good example. When the poet speaks of the great distance between him and his lover sitting just across from him, it strikes a chord immediately in everyone's heart, even though they may never have thought of it that way themselves. Poets like Ghalib and Mir were masters of Takhayyul with no equals in the centuries since their time. Taghazzul is the coining of the lyrics to be sung as a ghazal. Aside from beher and technical considerations, this is where poetry comes in. when the words flow together and the sounds blend with the meaning and the mood, it is ecstasy to listen to the ghazal. Enjoy. GHAZAL: FAASLE AISE BHI HONGE SINGER: GHULAM ALI POET : ADEEM HASHMI ALBUM : A JOURNEY FAASLE AISE BHI HONGE: Na udaa yun tokharon se, meri khaakh-e-kabr zaalim O cruel one! Do not kick away the crumbled dust of my tomb, Yeh hi ek rah gayii hai, mere pyaar ki nishaanii This is the only thing that remains as a sign that I loved Faasale aise bhi honge, yeh kabhi socha na tha That distances can be so great, I had never imagined Saamne baitha tha mere, aur woh meraa na tha She was seated in front of me, yet she was not mine Woh ke khushboo ki tarah, phaila tha mere chaar soo Like a fragrance, she surrounded me on all sides, Main usay mehsoos kar sakta tha, chhoo sakta na tha I could sense her presence, but could not touch her Raat bhar pichalii hi aahat kaano.n me.n aatii rahii All night long, the sound of her last arrival rang in my ears, Jhaank kar dekha galii me.n, koyi bhi aayaa na tha I craned my neck out the window, but there was no one there Yaad kar ke aur bhi, takliif hothi thi Adeem, Recalling her memory only increased Adeem's troubles Bhool jaane ke siva, ab koyi bhi chaara na tha Now there is no escape except to forget Here are many more verses that are not sung in the recording, all beautiful expressions of a lover's longing. Aaj lagataa hai ta'alluq mit gayaa poori tarah, It appears that the bond is totally broken today, Aaj us ne dekh kar bhi mujh ko pahchaana na tha Today, she looked at me, but did not recognize me Yeh sabhii viiraaniyan us ke juda hone se thii All this barrenness arose from her departure Aankh dhundalaayii huyii thi, shahar dhundalayaa na tha The eyes have turned misty, but the town was quite clear Main teri soorat liye saare zamaane me.n phiraa With your face in my mind, I roamed the world Saari duniya mein magar, koyi tere jaisa na tha But nowhere could I find another like you Aaj us ne dard bhi, apne alaihda kar diye Today, she has separated even her pain from mine Aaj main royaa to mere saath woh royaa na tha I cried today, but she did not cry along with me Aaj milne ki khushi mein, sirf main jagaa nahi.n I am not the only one who stayed up for the joy of our meeting Teri aankhon se bhi lagataa hai ke tu soyaa na tha Your eyes seem as if you, too, have not slept Trans:Venkat Translator's note: Even though Adeem wrote "meraa na tha" (in the masculine gender), he was referring to a female. It is a very common practice in the Persian tradition to refer to a female lover in the masculine gender, and many Urdu poets borrowed this style. . This message has been edited. He is not looking for another shrine, as the fortunate one is unaware of his undying love, and he must keep on pining, hoping that some crumbs might come his way, giving him something to hold on to, in the hope that unattainable love will finally becomes attainable. I have read the story and it is a masterpiece: . |

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:
SINGER: GHULAM ALI: POET: AMIR KHUSRO Khusro the Royal poet Khusro was a prolific classical poet associated with the royal courts of more than seven rulers of the Delhi Sultanate. He is popular in much of North India and Pakistan, because of many playful riddles, songs and legends attributed to him. Through his enormous literary output and the legendary folk personality, Khusro represents one of the first (recorded) Indian personages with a true multi-cultural or pluralistic identity. He wrote in both Persian and Hindustani. He also spoke Arabic and Sanskrit. His poetry is still sung today at Sufi shrines throughout Pakistan and India. Amir Khusro was the author of a Khamsa which emulated that of the earlier Persian-language poet Nizami Ganjavi. His work was considered to be one of the great classics of Persian poetry during the Timurid period in Transoxiana. The phrase "Zeehaal-e-miskeen" comes from a poem of Amir Khusrau. The unique thing about this poem is that it is a macaronic, written in Persian and *Brij Bhasha.(*Brij Bhasha: usually considered to be a dialect of Hindi,) In the first verse, the first line is in Persian, the second in Brij Bhasha, the third in Persian again, and the fourth in Brij Bhasha. In the remaining verses, the first two lines are in Persian, the last two in Brij Bhasha. The poem showcases Amir Khusrau's mastery over both languages. The English translation is: "Zeehaal-e-miskeen" Do not overlook my misery by blandishing your eyes, and weaving tales; My patience has over-brimmed, O sweetheart, why do you not take me to your bosom. Long like curls in the night of separation, short like life on the day of our union; My dear, how will I pass the dark dungeon night without your face before. Suddenly, using a thousand tricks, the enchanting eyes robbed me of my tranquil mind; Who would care to go and report this matter to my darling? Tossed and bewildered, like a flickering candle, I roam about in the fire of love; Sleepless eyes, restless body, neither comes she, nor any message. In honour of the day I meet my beloved who has lured me so long, O Khusrau; I shall keep my heart suppressed, if ever I get a chance to get to her trick. We have considered to include Amir Khusro: but again this one was not selected but gets honorable mentioned: GHULAM ALI SINGS: AMIR KHUSRO Zihal-e-Miskeen . |

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO: G
POET : MEER TAQI MEER POEM: PATA PATA BOOTA BOOTA Mohammed Taqi (b. 1723 - d. 1810), better known by his takhallus of Mir Taqi Mir (sometimes also spelled as Meer Taqi Meer), was the leading Urdu poet of the eighteenth century, and one of the pioneers who gave shape to the Urdu language itself. He was one of the principal poets of Delhi school of Urdu ghazal and remains arguably the foremost name in Urdu poetry. He was born in Agra, India (called "Akbarabad" at the time), which at the time was ruled by the Mughals, in 1723. He left for Delhi, at the age of 11, following his father's death. His philosophy of life was formed primarily from his father, whose emphasis on the importance of love and the value of compassion remained with him through his life and imbued his poetry. At Delhi, he finished his education and joined a group of nobility as a courtier-poet. He lived much of his life in Mughal Delhi. However, after Ahmad Shah Abdali's sack of Delhi each year starting 1748, he eventually moved to the court of Asaf-ud-Daulah in Lucknow, at the king's invitation. Distressed to witness the plundering of his beloved Delhi, he gave vent to his feelings through some of his couplets. He remained in Lucknow for the remainder of his life. He builds his poetry on the foundations of his personal experience. His favourite theme is love - love unfulfilled - and his favourite manner is conversational. Mir lived at a time when Urdu poetry was yet at a formative stage - its language was getting reformed and purged of native crudities, and its texture was being enriched with borrowings from Persian imagery and idiom. Aided by his aesthetic instincts, Mir struck a fine balance between the old and the new, the indigenous and the imported elements. Knowing that Urdu is essentially an Indian language, he retained the best in native Hindi speech and leavened it with a sprinkling of Persian diction and phraseology, so as to create a poetic language at once simple, natural and elegant, acceptable alike to the elite and the common folk. Consequently he has developed a style which has been the envy of all succeeding poets... It is a commonplace of criticism that Mir is a poet of pathos and melancholy moods. His pathos, it should be remembered, is compounded of personal and public causes. His life was a long struggle against unfavourable circumstances... Mir was a prolific writier. His complete works, Kulliaat, consist of 6 dewans, containing 13,585 couplets comprising all kinds of poetic forms: ghazal, masnavi, qasida, rubai, mustezaad, satire, etc. He died in Lucknow on 20th September 1810. . |

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:
POET : MEER TAQI MEER Mir vs Mirza Ghalib Mir Taqi Mir was often compared with the later day Urdu poet, Mirza Ghalib. Lovers of Urdu poetry often debate Meer's supremacy over Ghalib or vice versa. It may be noted that Ghalib himself acknowledged, through some of his couplets, that Meer was indeed a genius that deserved respect. Here is a couplet by Mirza Ghalib. Reekhta kay tumhi ustaad nahi ho Ghalib Kehtay hain aglay zamanay may koi Meer bhi thaa (You are not the only master of Urdu, Ghalib They say there used to be a Meer in the past) . |

GHAZALS BY THE SINGING DIVA: ASHA BHOSLE:
Asha Bhosle From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Asha Bhosle (born September 8, 1933) is an Indian singer. She is best known as a Bollywood playback singer, although she has a much wider repertoire. Her career started in 1943 and has spanned over six decades. She has done playback singing for over 950 Bollywood movies and sold many records. She is the sister of the equally accomplished Lata Mangeshkar. Asha Bhosle is considered one of the most versatile South Asian singers "” her range of songs includes film music, pop, ghazals, bhajans, traditional Indian Classical music, folk songs, qawallis, and Rabindra Sangeet. She has sung in over 14 languages including Hindi, Urdu, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, English, Russian, Czech, Nepali, Malay and Malayalam. Asha Bhosle is believed to have sung over 12,000 songs. Though her sister, Lata Mangeshkar was featured in the Guinness Book of World Records during 1974-1991, for having sung the most songs in the world, reputed sources have introduced concerns to its veracity, claiming that the Guinness counts were exaggerated and Bhosle has recorded more songs than Mangeshkar. Bhosle herself pointed out that she has sung the maximum recordings by any singer - 12,000. .. |

GHAZALS BY THE SINGING DIVA: ASHA BHOSLE: Asha Bhosle was born in the small hamlet of Goar in Sangli, Maharashtra, into the musical Marathi family of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar. Her father was a theater actor and classical singer who had been born in the village of Mangeshi in Goa. When she was nine years old, her father died. The family moved from Pune to Kolhapur and then to Bombay. She and her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar began singing and acting in films to support their family. She sang her first film song Chala Chala Nav Bala for the Marathi movie Majha Bal (1943). The music for the film was composed by Datta Dawjekar. She made her Hindi film debut when she sang the song Saawan aaya for Hansraj Behl's Chunariya (1948). At the age of 16, she eloped with 31-year old Ganpatrao Bhosle (1916-1966), marrying him against her family's wishes. Ganpatrao was sister Lata's personal secretary. The marriage failed miserably. Her husband and in-laws mistreated her. After a few years of marriage, Bhosle was turned out (around 1960) by a suspicious Ganpatrao[6] and she went to her maternal home with two children and pregnant with her third child, Anand. She continued to sing in films to earn money. At that time, prominent playback singers like Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begum and Lata Mangeshkar (her sister) monopolized the singing for the "heroine" roles and the big films, whilst Asha Bhosle used to get the assignments they did not take: singing for the bad girls and vamps, or songs in the second-grade movies. In the 1950s, she sang more songs than any other playback singer in Bollywood, yet most of these were in low budget B or C-grade films. Her earliest songs were composed by A R Qureshi, Sajjad Hussain and Ghulam Mohammed, most of which failed to do well. Singing in Dilip Kumar-starrer Sangdil (1952), composed by Sajjad Hussain, she got reasonable recognition. Consequently, film director Bimal Roy gave her a chance to sing in Parineeta (1953). Raj Kapoor signed her to sing the song Nanhe Munne Bachche with Mohammed Rafi in Boot Polish (1954), which gained popularity. . |

GHAZALS BY THE SINGING DIVA: ASHA BHOSLE:
O. P. Nayyar gave Asha Bhosle a big break in C.I.D. (1956). She first achieved success in B. R. Chopra's Naya Daur (1957), composed by him. His collaboration with Bhosle produced many hits. Later, she established herself and received patronage of composers such as Sachin Dev Burman and Ravi. Bhosle and Nayyar had a professional and personal parting of ways in the 1970s. In 1966, Asha's performance in the duets from music director R D Burman's first successful movie, Teesri Manzil won popular acclaim. Their collaboration produced numerous hits in the 1970s and resulted in a marriage. In 1960s and 1970s, she became the voice of Bollywood's most famous dancer, Helen. It is said that Helen would attend her recording sessions so that she could understand the song better and plan dance steps accordingly.[citation needed] Some of the most popular Asha Bhosle-Helen numbers are Piya Tu Ab To Aaja (Caravan), O Haseena Zulfon Wali (Teesri Manzil), and Yeh Mera Dil (Don). In Umrao Jaan (1981) and Ijaazat (1987), she sang traditional ghazals and proved her versatility, winning the coveted National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer. Her film activities continued into the 1990s. Her performance in the 1995 hit Rangeela was particularly notable. As late as 2005, 72-year-old Asha Bhosle's numbers for the Tamil film Chandramukhi and the pop song Lucky Lips for Salman Khan-starrer Lucky were chartbusters. Some of the other popular Tamil songs sung by Bhosle are Oh! Butterfly, September Maadham and Vennila Vennila. .. |

GHAZALS BY THE SINGING DIVA: ASHA BHOSLE: Umrao Jaan, 1981 By 1980s, Asha Bhosle had been stereotyped as a "cabaret singer" and a "pop crooner". In Rekha-starrer Umrao Jaan, she sang ghazals like Dil cheez kya hai, In aankhon ki masti ke, Ye kya jagah hai doston and Justju jiski thi. The songs proved her capable of doing fairly serious songs. The music director Khayyam, had lowered her pitch by half a note. Asha herself was surprised that she could sing so differently. The ghazals won her the first National Award of her career and proved her versatility. Ghazals from Umrao Jaan will be featured: .. |

GHAZALS BY THE SINGING DIVA: ASHA BHOSLE:
Ashaji on her recieving the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award I consider Filmfare Awards as the most prestigious because they're based on the public's choice--and for me their love and appreciation is foremost. I have also seen this award take birth and grow in popularity both here and abroad. I've been honoured with seven playback awards. I was awarded a special trophy a few years ago, at the insistence of the public, for the Rangeela song years after I had stepped out of the competition. This Lifetime Achievement Award has come to me at a time when I still have the enthusiasm and energy to do a lot many things in music ranging from Indian classical to Indipop. Filmfare and The Times of India group have given me just the right impetus, that encouragement to go on. .. |

GHAZALS BY THE SINGING DIVA: ASHA BHOSLE:
An Interview done ten years ago by Ashaji It's noon at her Peddar Road flat in Mumbai. Asha Bhosle is in the kitchen, in a light pink housecoat. She loves to cook, this quintessential Maharashtrian housewife. A "simple, homely woman" as she describes herself, she often goes to the market with her daughter-in-law Anuja to buy vegetables and fish. Ashaji spoke about how her life centres on her family and her music, her marital life and her relationship with her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar. Excerpts: What motivates you to sing at this age? I constantly need something new and challenging. We saw someone encashing on my old popular song (Chura liya), so we thought why shouldn't I do it. My family, especially my younger son Anand, pushed me. How is your voice still so young? Riyaz (practice), 45 minutes every day. Actually, you sound as old as you feel. I always felt young at heart. Who do you give credit for your success? My parents and God. I believe in destiny and the philosophy of karma. Many people have contributed, but I struggled alone. For the latest success, the credit really goes to my children. What's your mantra for success? Take risks. Never say die. It has worked for me. My priorities were children, then music. Whatever came my way to help me, I took it. The rest I dumped ruthlessly. Was there no disappointment? Initially, when I got into the world of music, I was treated like an underdog. But I couldn't have backed out. What about the men in your life? The children have grown up, and I feel uncomfortable if someone points out the hard times I've had. Ganpatrao and Pancham (R.D. Burman) are no more. I had a unique relationship with Pancham. He was a great music director who exploited my vocal cords like nobody could. We both loved music, food and the good things in life. And yet maintained our privacy, by choice. Wasn't the relationship strained later? Not exactly. Wrong people around him misguided him. Any successful artiste loves chamchas (cronies). They tried to separate us. When I couldn't tolerate it any more, I explained the situation to him. He realised it. How different are you from Lata? She is older by four years, she is like my mother. We have kept our professions separate from family life. But isn't she a rival? What are we talking about? Seniority or numbers? What she can do, I might not be able to. What I did, she can't. It is like two people who went to the moon: the person who took the first step got all the acclaim. It was a healthy competition. I always wanted to do better, that zid has made me what I am today. How do you feel when people compare the two? Good and bad. No one can match her. It is an honour that people compare my voice with hers. But bad, because we are two separate identities with different kinds of voices. Sheela Raval (1997) . |

GHAZALS BY THE SINGING DIVA: ASHA BHOSLE: Filmfare Awards Ashaji was the only singer who was able to compete with Lata Mangeshkar, she won the filmfare award consecutively in 1967 & 1968 when Lata still used to accept the Filmfare Award. After 1969, with Lata giving up the Filmfare award the coast was clear for Asha Bhosle and she went on to win the award 7 times which is the maximum any female singer ever won.She gave up the award after 1977. Though Kishore Kumar won the maximum number of filmfare awards, it was because unlike the Mangeshkar sisters he never refused the award. So if we compare till 1977 Asha had won the maximum number of filmfare awards ( Male & Female). 1967 - Garibon Ki Suno [DUS LAKH] 1968 - Parde Mein Rehne Do [SHIKHAR] 1971 - Piya Tu Ab To Aaja [CARAVAN] 1972 - Dum Maro Dum [HARE RAMA HARE KRISHNA] 1973 - Hone Lagi Hain Raat [NAINA] 1974 - Chain Se Humko [PRAN JAYE PAR VACHAN NA JAYE] 1977 - Yeh Mera Dil [DON] |

GHAZALS BY THE SINGING DIVA: ASHA BHOSLE:
PRAISES FOR ASHAJI FROM OTHER LUMINARIES LATA MANGESHKAR: Asha is a very versatile artiste. Whether it's a sad song or cabaret, she sings the number well. I'm not saying this because she' my sister. But it's my duty as an artiste to notice the virtues in her voice. I don't think we've another singer like her in our midst. KHAYYAM Says Khayyam, "Asha and I have worked together right from my first film, Biwi, in 1948. I had asked Asha to sing Mere man ke aangan chand chamka for then superstar Mumtaz Shanti. She sang it beautifully. Then, in Footpath, I made her sing all the songs for Meena Kumari. There was a cabaret number too. Footpath did very well. "Asha was very hard working. She would rehearse for hours. She understood my style; I understood her range. She didn't get to sing for heroines when she began. She faced a lot of trouble. She made a name for herself in fast numbers. Umrao Jaan. In the Muzaffar Ali-directed musical, she immortalised four ghazals: Dil cheez kya hai, In aankhon ki masti ke, Ye kya jagah hai and Justju jiski thi. It won her the first National Award of her career. "She is a fine human being, very blunt and says things to your face. I like that. It helps maintain relationships and clear the air. Her heart is clean. Her musical antecedents are awesome: natya sangeet and shastriya sangeet. Our non-film album, Asha Aur Khayyam, was composed by me and sung by her. She always does exactly what the composer wants her to. She can sing in any language." WILL GET TO MORE PRAISES LATER: AS WE WOULD DEFINATELY LIKE YOU TO HEAR WHAT OP NAYYYAR, SD BURMAN, RD BURMAN, RAVI, USHA KHANNA, SARDAR MALIK, PYRELALL OF LAXMIKANT PYRELALL FAME AND AR RAHMAN SAYS ABOUT ASHAJI . |

She sings ghazals made famous by Farida Khanum, Mehdi Hasan, Ghulam Ali, and Jagjit Singh, like: Aaj jaane ki zid na karo, aawargi, chupke-chupke, ranjish hi sahi, dil mein ek lehar si, and sarakti jaye rukh se naqab. The songs are rearranged musically by adding a lot of jazz elements, and of course Asha Bhonsles voice instead of the original voice. Asha Bhonsle- the singer: First off, let me make it clear that I am a huge fan of Asha Bhonsles voice who isnt? The flexibility, tone of voice, and the range she had were fabulous and incomparable. But it is evident that she is struggling to sing these days. Age is bound to catch up with the diva, as it shows in this album. Case in point, catch the beginning alaap in Aaj jaane ki zid na karo&.you cant imagine it is Asha Bhonsle singing it, the lady with the erstwhile golden voice, who could sing any murki in a song with utmost ease. Having said that, there is still plenty of charm left in her voice and she could give ghazal singers today a run for their money. But if you are really an Asha Bhonsle fan, then you dont want to compare her with anyone but herself and if you do that, then you would rather listen to her singing Dil Cheez kya hai (Umrao Jaan) from an older album, than listen to her on this album. Asha- the album: For ghazal purists, remixing a song like Rafta Rafta would be sacriledge, a complete No-No. If it were anyone other than Asha Bhonsle attempting it, I'm sure the original singers would have put their foot down and refused to let it happen. As it is, the songs are just about OK. I know the justification for remixing a classic is that the younger generation get the benefit of being introduced to it but I consider myself as part of the young generation, and I love classical and semi classical music. I would rather listen to Mehdi Hassan sing Rafta Rafta with a harmonium as accompaniment than with a saxophone after all, ghazals are about poetry and emotions, not about snazzy instrumentation. asj's note: The Official Word is that Asha should not have meddle with the classics, but it is just what it is, that is a "Tribute to the Meastros" . 1) Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo [Lyrics: Fayyaz Hashmi, Original music: Nisar Bazmi] A cry of separation and pain form the underlining theme of the Fayyaz Hasmi written number 'Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo'. The classic is turned into a soft number by Pandit Somesh Mathur who does a lot with a synthesizer to make the track sound contemporary and hence sound exciting to current generation as well. Purists may not be really bowled over by a slight touch up given to the ghazal but the intent to make the track reach out to wider audience is readily met 2) Sarakti Jaaye Hai (Ahista Ahista) [Lyrics: Ameer Minai, Original music: Jagjit Singh] A range of Indian instruments begin 'Sarakti Jaaye Hai Rukh Se Naqab Ahista Ahista' that has a rare sensuality by means of lyrics than anything else. "What happens when anticipation turns out to be more exciting than the reality itself" - is what makes this Ameer Minai track one of the most romantic evers. The only track in the album with original music by Jagjit Singh, it is of the kinds that can be played on a low volume in your living room while spending your lazy Sunday afternoon! 3) Dil Mein Ek Lehar Si [Lyrics: Nasir Kazmi, Original music: Ghulam Ali] Great experience while cherishing Ashaji's evergreen vocals continues with 'Dil Mein Ek Lehar Si'. Brilliantly worded by Nasir Kazmi, this ghazal would be enjoyed by every age group and would soon be loved all over again, especially with the campus crowds who love playing on such music along with the studies. Highly enjoyable, one wonders why no one ever thought of coming up with these eternal tracks in such modern day version before? 4) Mujhe Tum Nazar Se [Lyrics: Masroor Anwar, Original music: Sohail Rana] "You can ignore me, but you can not forget me" - that's the essence of the love song 'Mujhe Tum Nazar Se' that Ashaji sings in her inimitable slightly husky voice. With such great tracks coming up in quick succession one just can't help but admire the hard work of the team behind these priceless gems. A melodious track, you can just switch off the lights and put the album on a repeat mode. 5) Chupke Chupke [Lyrics: Hasrat Mohani, Original music: Ghulam Ali] Remember eternal composition 'Chupke Chupke Raat Din Aansoon Bahana Yaad Hai' by Ghulam Ali. Well, one doesn't really need to introduce this all-time popular track that is done full justice by Ashaji in her version. She is marvelous yet again with the ghazal while introducing some finer nuances here and then that give an extra zing to the track. Usage of saxophone throughout the track with mandatory tabla beats (that are ever so essential for a ghazal) are well incorporated in order to make for yet another wonderful hearing. 6) Ranjish Hi Sahi [Lyrics: Ahmed Faraz, Original music: Nisar Bazmi] One of the few tracks in the album which hasn't been touched much with both the look as well as feel of the ghazal being more or less intact. 'Ranjish Hi Sahi' is a lyrics heavy track that would be followed mainly by those who have a strong command over such ghazals. Not one of those soft tracks that could be easily identifiable by one and all, it has a classy feel throughout and would work with the niche audience. 7) Rafta Rafta [Lyrics: Tasleem Fazli, Original music: Naushad] A clear example of what separates men from boys (and women from girls), 'Rafta Rafta' is a mind blowing piece of writing that impresses a music lover on its first hearing itself. Coming towards the end of the album, it is one of the best ever in the album that charms with beautiful writing, ear pleasing recreation of music and some very heartening singing by Ashaji who clearly seems to be enjoying herself while rendering the number. Arrival of this track makes this album a part of your "must have" collections and just cannot be ignored. 8) Aawargi [Lyrics: Mohsin Naqvi, Original music: Ghulam Ali] Best is reserved for the last with Ghulam Ali saab's 'Aawargi' (Ye Dil Ye Paagal Dil Mera) coming up in the very end. Guitar strings begin the track that first gives an impression of the track being a remix of a groovy track a la 'Dum Maro Dum' or 'Chura Liya Hai Tumne'. But as soon as Asha ji begins crooning the track, one is completely bowled over by the funky touch that this ghazal has been given. A unique experience of its kind, it would be easily identifiable by the yuppy generation, mainly due to Pandit Somesh Mathur's efforts who changes the look of the track while keeping the feel intact! A brilliant assortment of ghazals sung in inimitable vocals of Ashaji who doesn't let the people behind these gems down, it is in one word "spellbinding". A treat for the lovers of timeless Indian music, it is simply mesmerizing. . |

GHAZALS BY THE SINGING DIVA: ASHA BHOSLE:
In Ashaji own words on the album "Asha" "I knew I was looking for trouble when I decided to re-do the ghazals greats -- Mehdi Hassan, Farida Khannum, Ghulam Ali and Jagjit Singh," she says. "But my life is nothing, if not a series of challenges. The danger of purists taking offence was always there. Ab dekhiye na. Aaj kal kya hota hai, koi bhi kisika gana uthke gaane lagta hai. (Nowadays, people are plagiarising songs left, right and centre). They just take a big singer's number and make it small, with clothes to match, in the music video, matak-matak ke." Bhosle insists that she hasn't done any re-mixes in Asha. "I haven't tampered with notes or lyrics. Only the instruments have been modernised. As for the cynics, they're bound to have their say. When some years ago, I released the album Rahul & I, where I sang R.D. Burman songs, I was criticised even by those who were my admirers. But I remember a four-year-old boy came up to me at a restaurant and asked me to sing 'Piya Tu Ab To Aaja'. I was so happy that a new generation would be familiarised with R.D.'s tunes." When it comes to re-doing classics, she is no stranger to controversies. She laughs, "I had once done an album of Noorjehan's songs called Kashish. Main bahut dar gayi thi. (I was very scared) I phoned Noorjehan for her consent. She retorted, 'Badi himmat hai tum mein'. "After recording the songs, I took the cassette to her home in London," she continues. "She looked at me angrily and told me to come back the next day. The next day she complimented me, 'Shabaash Beta. Jo cheez main nahin keh saki woh tum keh gayi ho (What I could not say, you have).' I touched her feet and sought her blessings. I hope after listening to Asha, the ghazal greats respond the same way." "I've tried my best to retain the original flavour. I heard every number at least 50 times," she says. Incidentally, sister Lata Mangeshkar had paid homage to playback singing greats of Hindi cinema in her album Shraddhanjali. Critics had accused the Nightingale of India of trying to be one-up on her colleagues who had sung the originals. But the album became such a success that Lata recorded a sequel the next year. GHAZALS BY THE SINGING DIVA -ASHA BHOSLE
Ashaji won great acclaim and recognition as a ghazal singer with this masterpiece. She showed her fans that she could move to many music forms with ease, even though her fame hitherto had come from the "pop" genre. Ghazals require the singer to convey the feelings of the poet from their voice directly into the listener's hearts, and Ashaji has done herself proud in this sad story about an accomplished but unappreciated poet from the past. So it is apt that we start our Asha ghazals with this one. Movie Name: Umrao Jaan (1981) Singer: Asha Bhosle Music Director: Khayyam Lyrics: Shahryar 1) DIL CHEEZ KYA HAI dil cheez kya hai aap merii jaan liijiye Never mind my heart, Take my very life! bas ek baar mera kahaa...maan liijiye Just once, do what I ask you dil cheez kya hai aap merii jaan liijiye Never mind my heart, Take my very life! is anjuman me.n aap ko...aana hai baar baar You must come, time and again, to this court diiwaar-o-dar ko ghaur se... pahachaan liijiye Get to know every nook and corner well dil cheez kya hai aap merii jaan liijiye Never mind my heart, Take my very life! maana ki dosto.n ko nahii.n It is agreed that friends don't dosto.n, dosto.n ko nahii.n That friends don't maana ke dosto.n ko nahii.n dostii ka paas It is agreed that friends don't respect friendships; lekin yeh kya ke ghair ka...ehasaan liijiye but why do you accept favors from strangers? dil cheez kya hai aap merii jaan liijiye Never mind my heart, Take my very life! kahiye to...aasmaan ko If you just say so kahiye to aasmaan ko zamiin par utaar laayen if you just say so, then I shall lay the sky at your feet, mushkil nahiin hai kuchh bhii Nothing is difficult; mushkil nahiin hai kuchh bhii agar Thaan liijiye nothing is difficult if you set your heart on it. dil cheez kya hai aap merii jaan liijiye Never mind my heart, Take my very life! bas ek baar Just for once bas ek baar mera kahaa maan liijiye Just once, do what I ask you maan liijiye Do it Trans: Venkat VIDEO: Dil Cheez Kya Hai - Umrao Jaan (Video): This message has been edited. GHAZALS BY THE SINGING DIVA: ASHA BHOSLE:
Aaahh, eyes. Just about three square inches of your body, but they do so much. They look, they see, they peer, they peek, they glance, they glare, they ogle, they leer, they observe, they spy and seek. They can calm a crying child, cajole a brat. They can shout silently, or show compassion, or shoot arrows directly into your heart. They can console and comfort, display awe and anger, show love, lust and longing. They can cry, complain, or cause anguish in a lover's heart. They can mock, muse or move you. They can speak, smile and seduce. They can induce, implore or intoxicate. Man can make an imitation of almost every part of the human body with today's technology. Man can make a camera that can see, but he can never make an eye. God kept the secret of making eyes to Himself. That is because that is where He put the soul, another thing that man cannot make. The same God either made Rekha's eyes just for this ghazal, or made this ghazal just for her. This ghazal crowns Ashaji as the undisputed queen of the ghazal genre. It is a pity she did not sing hundreds more for us. Movie Name: UMRAO JAAN (1981) Music Director: Khayyam Lyrics: Shahryar (5) IN AANKHON KI MASTII KE In Aankhon Kii Mastii Ke,(2) Mastaane Hazaaron Hain (2) There are thousands intoxicated by the passion of these eyes, In Aankhon Se Vaabastah (2) Afasaane Hazaaron Hain Thousands of romances have been spun about these eyes, Ik Tum Hii Nahiin Tanhaa (2), Ulafat Mein Merii Rusavaa (2) You are not the only one disgraced by your desire for me, Is Shahar Mein Tum Jaise (2) Diivaane Hazaaron Hain (2) In this city, there are thousands of mad men just like you, In Aankhon Kii Mastii Ke, Mastaane Hazaaron Hain There are thousands intoxicated by the passion of these eyes, Ik Sirf hum hii may Ko (2) Aankhon Se Pilaate Hain (2) I am the only one that can intoxicate you with my eyes Kahane Ko To Duniyaa Mein (2) Mayakhaane Hazaaron Hain Although there are thousands of wine houses in this world In Aankhon Kii Mastii Ke, Mastaane Hazaaron Hain There are thousands intoxicated by the passion of these eyes, Is Shamm-e-Farozaan Ko (2) Aandhii Se Daraate Ho (2) You are trying to frighten this lighted candle with a mere storm, Is Shamm-e-Farozaan Ke (2) Paravaane Hazaaron Hain Thousands of moths are drawn to this brilliant candle, In Aankhon Kii Mastii Ke(2), Mastaane Hazaaron Hain (2) There are thousands intoxicated by the passion of these eyes, In Aankhon Se Vaabastaa(2) Afasaane Hazaaron Hain Thousands of romances have been spun about these eyes, Trans: Venkat . GHAZALS BY THE SINGING DIVA: ASHA BHOSLE:
Asha Bhosle was asked "You must have sung around 25,000 songs till date". She replied, "no singer in the entire world can humanly sing 25,000 songs. In fact I would like to state humbly that I am the only singer who has sung the maximum number of songs "” 12,000. If you sing one song a day, you can humanly sing 365 songs a year and 3650 songs in ten years. In around 60 years of my career I could sing 12,000 songs because there were times I had sung even four songs a day." . |

GHAZALS BY THE SINGING DIVA: ASHA BHOSLE:
The two legends of the music world come together after sixteen years to invoke your musical senses, made numb by the cacophony that goes in the name of music today. After Umrao Jaan Asha Bhosle and Khayyam come together again to give a set of eight scintillating ghazals, each leaving its indelible mark on you. The soothing quality of Khayyam's music is matched by Bhosle's perfect renditions, who with her flawless Urdu conveys the rich essence of ghazals. Experience the magic as Bhosle feelingly sings Chaha tha ek shakhs ko, or revel in the solemn Jaane kya haal ho. Marvel at her voice variation in Log mujhe pagal kehtain hai (which has strains of Dil cheez kya hai), or sway to the Arabian lilt in Meri nigah chalakta hua hai paimana. Khayyam's orchestration in all the compositions is matchless, and though they have a ring similar to Umrao Jaan, it is welcome. The profound lyrics by Hasan Kamaal, Nida Fazli, Naqsh Lyallpuri and Ahmad Wasi shine like pearls in the musical string of Khayyam's music. Immortal music by the legends. 1. Chaha Tha Ek Shakhs Ko - Hasan Kamaal* 2. Log Mujhe Pagal Kehte Hain - Naqsh Layalpuri* 3. Mudatain Beet Gai - Nida Fazil* 4. Dil Ka Lagana Khel Na Jano - Nida Fazil* 5. Anchal Mein Phool Chand - Hasan Kamaal* 6. Jaane Kya Haal Ho - Ahmad Wasi* 7. Zamane Bhar Mein Jo - Naqsh Layalpuri* 8. Meri Nigah Chalkta Hua - Ahmad Wasi* After listening to this Album, I will agree with the writer that the eight scintillating ghazals leaves an indelible mark; this is one of those album that I will have to get for my collection, which will include (1) Asha (tribute to the legends) titled: A brand new album (2) Meeraj E Ghazal: (3) Asha Aur Khayaam: These are a must for any Ghazal's Connoiseur of fine music: . |

GHAZALS BY THE SINGING DIVA: ASHA BHOSLE:
ASHA ON "ASHA AUR KHAYYAM" On Asha Aur Khayyam: After Umrao Jaan I had wanted to cut an album with Khayyam sahab. We discussed the idea with a few music companies, but they turned out to be so kanjoos. They didn't want to spend on the album. PolyGram was an exception. It willingly agreed to the album and gave us a free hand to work on it. I knew from experience what a taskmaster Khayyam sahab is and his insistence on rehearsals. I assured him that I would rehearse with him for a month or two before recording for the album. While rehearsing for the ghazals, I felt that the lyrics were reflecting my story. It was as if the lyricists knew the ups and downs in my life. I had tears in my eyes while singing some of the ghazals. On the declining number of ghazal patrons: It's really sad that today not many people understand ghazals and appreciate their beauty. Urdu is such a polite, polished language. You hear people saying, "Ek ˜gajal' gao." That's because we are not promoting Urdu, which is one of the most beautiful languages of India. It's so rich, yet we are disowning it and distancing ourselves from it. I remember when I had just begun my singing career. I never could get the Urdu pronounciation and words right. Hum ghati Marathi ke bachche, humein kya maloom Urdu kya hai (We were ghati Marathi-speaking locals, what would we know about Urdu). But the writers and the lyricists helped me understand the finer nuances of the language and evoked my interest in the language. I even kept a tutor, a maulana, and learnt Alif, be, te, se. Today I am proud that I can get my Urdu words right. Urdu is very much our language, our culture, and it is a pity that it is not spoken widely. It would be great if it is taught widely and people appreciate its charm and becomes well-versed in it. .. |

GHAZALS BY THE SINGING DIVA: ASHA BHOSLE:
1) Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo [Lyrics: Fayyaz Hashmi, Original music: Nisar Bazmi] A cry of separation and pain form the underlining theme of the Fayyaz Hasmi written number 'Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo'. The classic is turned into a soft number by Pandit Somesh Mathur who does a lot with a synthesizer to make the track sound contemporary and hence sound exciting to current generation as well. Purists may not be really bowled over by a slight touch up given to the ghazal but the intent to make the track reach out to wider audience is readily met ASHA BHOSLE Aaaj jaane ki zid na karo: MP3 . |

GHAZALS BY THE SINGING DIVA: ASHA BHOSLE:
CELINA JAITLEY (16)JAANE KYA HAAL HO: MP3 (16) JAANE KYA HAAL HO Movie: MAA KA AANCHAL Poet: KAIFI AZMI jane kya haal ho is dil ka agar tu aaye, who knows what will happen to this heart if you come? na to jazbaat pe na khud pe hi kaboo aaye... I will lose control of my feelings, and even over me char janib teri parchai nazar aati hai, in every direction, I see your shadow tu hi khooshboo sa mehekta har soo aaye... like a fragrance, you waft in from everywhere tere jalwe ki nigaho'n ko nahi taab rahi, my eyes could not endure the brilliance of your appearance aisa mehsoos hua, chand ko hum choo aaye... it felt like I had returned from touching the moon teri dildaar nigaho'n ka dilasa paa kar, encouraged by your captivating eyes, meri palko'n pe chamakte jugnoo aaye... my eyes were lit by sparkling stars Trans: Venkat |

Respectfully beg to disagree, ASJ.
This masterpiece work from Ghalib got much better treatment from Talat Mehmood. The composer who did the Asha version totally botched it. The tune and the rhythm did not connect with the mood required for this poignant ghazal. I included this because I like the poetry. Asha and her composer could have done much better. |

Points noted V, but my opinion of Ashaji in her renditions is that she creates that unmistakable feelings of magic in her rendition of "Kabhi neki bhi uske jee mein agar aa jaye hai mujhse" or at least this is how I honestly feel. Can we compare Ashaji with Talat in Ghazals Singing? I do not think so as Talat rules the roost during his lifetime, and would have taken the cake even in his bad day, one of the reasons why he was nicknamed "King of Ghazals" Although many ghazal singers had not done this one, one has to laud the effort of Ashaji, as for the music composer, I honestly belief that few could have done better, certainly the genious Naushad could have. Could Salil Chowdhary, Sajjad, Khayyaam, Jaydeo, Chitragupt, Sardar Malik, or even O. P. Nayyar done better for this Ghalib's gem? I have to wonder or we can speculate. .. |

GHAZALS BY THE SINGING DIVA: ASHA BHOSLE:
FINALLY DADASAHEB PHALKE AWARD: Asha Bhosle : A Contented Soul Like poetry in motion. That is how the lyrics of life move for Asha Bhosle. The journey has been a long one. But she has always had a spring in her step, a song on her lips. And now, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The lips curl upwards to shape a smile. ˜˜Who wouldn't want to receive an award?'' A melodious silence punctuates the pause. ˜˜BR Chopra, my rakhi brother, called up to inform me that I had been chosen to receive the award. It was disbelief at first. Then the reality of the truth took over. But I'll just say that I am lucky... and continue with my work. Just like I have always done.'' Asha is happy. Because ˜˜people are happier than I am about my receiving the award!'' Call it her sense of humor or what you will, but charm is second nature to this lady. And this charm takes talk of the Dadasaheb Phalke coming a little too late in its stride. ˜˜I have never been on the lookout for recognition. I just do what I am meant to do.'' Asha Bhosle, of course, is meant to sing... cut albums... perform live... entertain. And, occasionally, feel nervous. Concerts disconcert Asha Bhosle. ˜˜I do feel a bit nervous while performing live. But the encouragement of the audience is all I need to feel reassured. What I like about live performances is the instant feedback of the audience.'' The audience has its favourites. Asha has her own. ˜˜When I think of playback singers, I think of Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. Among music directors, I like RD Burman "”and not because he was my husband.'' As a singer who sings every song as if it is her first one, Asha does not blow her own trumpet. But then, as a singer whose songs find a voice through millions of voices, she doesn't need to. Asha is a satisfied soul, she is satisfied with her ˜˜career,'' satisfied with her ˜˜family life'' and satisfied with the way she is. Being Asha Bhosle is enough for Asha Bhosle. And that is an achievement worthy of an award. By Taniya Sahni: . |

Through the Closed Doorway: A Collection of Nazms, Shahryar, SHAHRYAR has enchanted us with poems like: POET: SHAHRYAR: DIL CHEEZ KYA HAI: Never mind my heart, Take my very life! POET: SHAHRYAR: JUSTUJU JISKI THI: I did not find the one I had been searching for POET: SHAHRYAR: IN AANKHON KI MASTII KE: MP3 There are thousands intoxicated by the passion of these eyes, POET: SHAHRYAR YEH KYA JAGAH HAI DOSTON What is this place, friends? And we can go on and on and on....... FOR those well versed in Urdu and its idiom, it is easy to access the delights of Urdu poetry. For others, however, the access to Urdu poetry remains a closed doorway due to unfamiliarity with the script and the nuanced idiom of the language. It is here that translations play a pivotal role in pushing open the doorway to the rich heritage of Urdu verse. Rakshanda Jalil's translations of Shahryar's nazms are a step in this direction. Reticent poet Shahryar is a reticent poet rarely seen or heard on public platforms. For most, he is a poet whose work has been heard as songs in films like "Gaman" and "Umrao Jaan". Yet, he has been a prolific writer whose first collection of poems, Ism-e-Azam, was published way back in 1965. As a poet, Shahryar's works are marked by imagist configurations, non-allusive treatment of subject, and an intriguing inclination towards softness of tone and tenor. His diction draws heavily upon the spoken idiom of the Hindustani of today. His poems are tightly structured and epigrammatic, drawing their power from conscious understatement. Common human aspirations and sorrows are transmuted into the universal in such a nuanced way that they come to have a number of socio-political texts and contexts. His forte lies in turning the plebeian into the poetic. Reverberances of these qualities are echoed in the variety of nazms selected by the translator. The poet voices myriad experiences "” dreams and desires, pains and penance, despair and desolation "” which are rooted in our times. An overwhelming angst and yearning runs through them. The states of sleep and awakening suggestively bring out the metamorphic conscious/ subconscious underpinnings that mark individual pieces like "The Enchantment of Sleep". The sense of void and the futility pervade other pieces like "Helplessness" and "Call From the Unseen". The pangs of creativity, as set out in "A Black Poem", symbolise the tone and tenor of the selected nazms. Through the Closed Doorway affords the reader a chance to know Shahryar as a poet who straddles the world of popular and academic culture. Through this translation, Jalil has surely opened the usually closed doorway to Urdu nazms, especially those that flow from the pen of Shahryar. Thanks, Yes, I think we should add this to the list. It is beautiful and poignant. BTW, (Bulaa rahaa hai kaun)2 Who is calling Mujhko chilmanon ke us taraf me from the edge of those reed curtains? should be Who is beckoning me to the other side of these screens? I will add it as the next number on the list. I think we still need a couple more. I will count them when I post the next one. I hope you are lucky enough to be in a milder climate. Toronto is now minus 17 Celsius (that is about zero F), with a wind that feels like minus 30 C (-20 F) This message has been edited. Last edited by: asj, |

Thanks so much for agreeing to include on your list, I thought that this was wonderfully done by Ashaji, the voice was still there when she recorded this one. Stay warm. It is getting very cold in NY too. . |

Ashaji, the underdog for many years in the shadow of her sister, has come into her own now. She has style and a youth that belies her chronological age. She does not like comparisons, but I think she is a better entertainer in live concerts.

Says Gulzar: "If Lata-ji has sung all the songs in my 'Aandhi', 'Mausam' and 'Libaas', Asha did the entire score in 'Namkeen' and 'Ijaazat' and of course our collaborative effort 'Dil Padosi Hai' with Pancham, which is a personal favourite."
Gifted with one of the most versatile voices in the industry, Asha has sung every genre of song, be it pop, club mixes, romantic numbers, bhajans and ghazals. Asha's zingy singing has made memorable many of the cabaret numbers by yesteryears' diva Helen. The Yesteryear cabaret numbers by Diva Helen is another story for another thread. . |

LEGENDARY SINGER OF BOLLYWOOD FILM MUSIC ASHA BHOSLE
PERFORMS AT CARNEGIE HALL ON THURSDAY, APRIL 17/08 Carnegie Hall today announced that legendary Indian film singer Asha Bhosle will return to Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage for a solo performance on Thursday, April 17 at 8:00 p.m. The concert is part of Ms. Bhosle's 75th birthday world tour and coincides with the release of her new album, 75 Years of Asha. Ms. Bhosle last appeared at Carnegie Hall in April 2005 with the Kronos Quartet on a program entitled India Calling: Songs from R.D. Burman's Bollywood. Described as "the most recorded voice on the planet," with more than 12,500 titles to her name, singer Asha Bhosle has carved a niche for herself as one of the most versatile singers in the business. Early in her career, Ms. Bhosle trained in classical singing but soon followed the footsteps of her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, and worked as a playback singer for the growing Indian film industry. Two partnerships"”with O.P. Nayyar and R.D. Burman"”assured her songs a permanent place in music history. Nayyar, the famed music director, is credited with breaking Ms. Bhosle's career in the 1950s. Two decades later, Ms. Bhosle began working with R.D. Burman, whose diverse westernized influences can be heard in many of his compositions. Ms. Bhosle has performed live concerts throughout the world, singing in 18 different languages. The winner of seven Filmfare Awards in India, she has also received the National Award twice for her ghazals in Umrao Jaan and Ijaazat. Over the past decade, Ms. Bhosle has reinvented herself in the mainstream pop music genre. In 1996, she released her first album, Rahul and I, which remixed her older, classic songs for a new dance audience and stayed on the "Top of the Pops" list for months. Her follow-up album, Janam Samjha Karo, won an MTV Award in 1997 and in 2001, Ms. Bhosle took on the role of composer with her album Aap Ki Asha. Most recently, she recorded a solo album entitled Love Supreme as well as the Grammy Award-nominated album You've Stolen My Heart with the Kronos Quartet. Program Information Thursday, April 17, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage ASHA BHOSLE, Vocalist Ticket Information Beginning on September 17 tickets, priced at $24, $29, $38, $54, $71, and $79, will be available at the Carnegie Hall Box Office, 154 West 57th Street. Despite the fact that her various relationships have rarely been smooth. An unhappy first marriage with Bhosle was followed by a long relationship with music director O.P. Nayyar that led nowhere.
Her second marriage to a much younger Burman soured. "My priorities were clear: first I was the mother, then a singer, then a wife or lover," she says. "If something came between the first two, I cut myself ruthlessly from it." Which also meant controversies, and being labelled selfish, ruthless and manipulative. . |

Ashaji remembers"I went to this small room in Madras and found this man with hair all over his face. 'Shah Rukh?' I asked. It turned out to be A R Rahman. 'Sing, Amma,' he said. After I had sung for some time with only a synthesiser as accompaniment, he told me: 'Enough, Amma! Stop Amma!' A month later, I went to Madras again. He played a song for me. 'When did I sing this?!' I asked in amazement." The title song of Rangeela commenced Ashatai's association with A R Rahman. Highlight: Rangeela heroine Urmila Matondkar danced to the ditty on stage. . |

" 'Asha,' " Dada (S D Burman) once told me, 'you are Helen.' 'Helen?!' I asked. 'Main kali kalooti aur woh...' (I am so dark and she...) 'No, no,' Dada replied irritatedly, 'imagine you are Helen.' " Ashatai paid handsome tribute to the screen legend on whom her best known songs of the '60s and '70s were picturised. "She would call me in the morning and tell me, 'Asha, today, you are singing my song.' And when I reached the recording studio, there always was a chocolate waiting for me." |

Log mujhay paagal kehete hain (2) galiyon me baazaron me (2) They call me mad, in the streets, in the markets Main ne pyar kiya hai mujhko (2) chunva do diiwaaron me (2) I have loved, put me away, wall me in Trans Venkat The pains and agony of Love, sometimes leaves behind so much to be desired, those that are weak, succumbed to the malady of Emotional Breakdown, Stress, and in some cases Suicide: Confusion comes, And it takes its toll. Spinning me in circles. Making me so cold. My heart says one thing. My mind says another. Should we, Or should we not be together? I feel like I am sinking In a sea of despair. Slowly drowning, And no one cares. Who can I turn to? There is no one there for me... Because they don't understand. They just don't see. They cannot comprehend The love I feel for you. They do not understand The pain you put me through. Here I am, All confused once again. We are starting over, But will it end? Love and pain Engulf me with their waves. Pulling me down. So deep I cannot be saved. Or is it all in my mind? One big illusion? Brought on by The pain and confusion? It is a pleasure to let you guys know that as soon as we are finished with Ashaji, we have on the burners the famous and Flambouyant "Talat Mahmood"
who was dubbed "The King of Ghazals" The enjoyment continues. As busy (work) as he is I am sure that Ven will find the time to serenade us with his impeccable translations. . |
