GHAZALS: DUNIYA KISISSE PYAR MEIN:

SINGER : MEHNDI HASSAN:

POET : DAAG DEHLVI

(1) DUNIYA KISSISE PYAR MEIN:

Duniya kisi ke pyaar mein jannat se kam nahin
The world is nothing less than heaven if one is in love
Ik dilruba hai dil mein jo hooron se kam nahi
The one who resides in my heart is not any less than *hoors
(*hoors/=beautiful virgins available in heaven)

(Tum baadshaah-e-husn ho husn-e-jahaan ho)2
You are the most beautiful one in the world
Jaane wafa ho aur mohaabat ki shaan ho
You are my life and faith and pride of love
Jalwe tumhare husn ke taaron se kam nahin
The splendor of your beauty is not any less than the stars

Duniya kisi ke pyaar mein jannat se kam nahin
The world is nothing less than heaven if one is in love

(Bhoole se mushkurao to moti baras pade)2
Your ocassional smile is like rain of pearls
Palke utha ke dekho to, kaliyaan bhi has pade
Lifing your eyes and look, even the beauty of the flower
buds cannot compare

Khusboo tumhaari zulf ki phoolon se kam nahin
The fragrance of your hair is nothing less than that of a flower

Duniya kisi ke pyaar mein jannat se kam nahin
The world is nothing less than heaven if one is in love
Ik dilruba hai dil mein jo hooron se kam nahi
The one who resides in my heart is not any less than *hoors
(*hoors/=beautiful virgins available in heaven)

Duniya kisi ke pyaar mein jannat se kam nahin
The world is nothing less than heaven if one is in love

GHAZALS: GULON MAIN RANG BHARAY

SINGER: MEHNDI HASSAN

POET : FAIZ AHMAD FAIZ

(2) GULOAN MEIN RANG BHARE

(Gulon main rang bharay, baad-e-naubahaar chalay)2
Filled with colourful flowers, the early spring is on its way
Chalay bhi aao keh gulshan ka karobaar chalay
Oh please grace us with our presence, so that the early Spring can finish decorating the gardens
Gulon main rang bharay, baad-e-naubahaar chalay
Filled with colourful flowers, the early Spring is on its way

(Qaffas udaas hai yaro, saba say kuch to kaho)2
I am sad in my imprisonment (of love) come on breeze do something!!
Kaheen to behr-e-Khuda aaj zikr-e-yaar chalay
My lover's name is being uttered somewhere on god's earth, please bring it to me

(Jo hum pay guzri so guzri magar shab-e-hijraan)2
Irrespective of my suffering due to our separation, my life was thrown into darkenss
Humaray ashk teri aaqibat sanwaar chalay
I hope that my tears will enhance your future

Chalay bhi aao keh gulshan ka karobaar chalay
Oh please grace us with our presence, so that the early Spring can finish decorating the gardens
Gulon main rang bharay, baad-e-naubahaar chalay
Filled with colourful flowers, the early Spring is on its way

(Maqaam 'Faiz' koi raah main jacha hee nahin)2
On my journey of love, Faiz, no rest stop appealed to me
Jo koo-e-yaar say niklay to soo-e-daar chalay
Because when I leave the street of my Beloved it will be towards death

Chalay bhi aao keh gulshan ka karobaar chalay
Oh please grace us with our presence, so that the early Spring can finish decorating the gardens
Gulon main rang bharay, baad-e-naubahaar chalay
Filled with colourful flowers, the early Spring is on its way

Kabhi to subh teray kunj-e-lab say ho aaghaaz
I hope that someday my morning will begin with the sound of your voice
Kabhi to shab sar-e-kaakul say mushkbaar chalay
And the night is scented with your beautiful curly hair

Baraa hai dard ka rishta, yeh dil ghareeb sahee
My heart recognises that this relationship of love is indeed painful
Tumhaaray naam pay aaen gay Ghamgusaar chalay
The pain given by you, will earn me a visit from the sympathizers

Hooa jo teer-e-nazar neemkash to kya hasil
There is no point in loving someone the half hearted way
Maza to jab hai keh seenay kay aar paar chalay
Fun is when the arrow pierces the heart all the way

Chalay bhi aao keh gulshan ka karobaar chalay
Oh please grace us with our presence, so that the early Spring can finish decorating the gardens
Gulon main rang bharay, baad-e-naubahaar chalay
Filled with colourful flowers, the early Spring is on its way

Huzoor-e-yaar hui daftar-e-junooN ka talab
My beloved presence made the desires grow into an obsession
Giraah main lay kay garaybaan ka taar taar chalay
All that is left, my clothes (tatters) heart (broken and painful) that I take with me

NB: When Mehndi sings this ghazal, he sings sometimes three and
sometimes more verses: but we are very lucky to have all the verses by the
Poet: Faiz Ahmad Faiz

The language of (Urdu) is very difficult to translate, especially when the word is sometimes never heard of, I am smiling with Ranjana for doing a superb job, never mind I have had to comeback to this the umpthteen times to get it right, all in order to produce a fine product:

GHAZAL: KHUDA KARE KE MOHABAT

SINGER: MEHNDI HASSAN

POET : TASLEEM FAZLI

(3) KHUDA KARE KE MOHABAT: MP :

(Khudaa kare ki muhabbat mein ye mukaam aaye)2
With God's blessing, may my love attain such height that
Kisii kaa naam luun lab pe tumhaaraa naam aaye
Whenever a name comes to my lips, it will be yours
Khudaa kare ki muhabbat mein ye mukaam aaye
With God's blessing, may my love attain such height

Kuchh is tarah se jiiye zindagii basar na hu_ii
I have lived in such a way that life has become intolerable
Tumhaare baad kisii raat kii sahar na hu_ii
After you my nights never turned into a dawn
Sahar nazar se mile zulf leke shaam aaye
My morning is lit by your eyes and your dark beautiful hair brings the evening to me

Kisii kaa naam luun lab pe tumhaaraa naam aaye
Whenever a name comes to my lips, it will be yours
Khudaa kare ki muhabbat mein ye mukaam aaye
With God's blessing, may my love attain such height

Khud apane ghar mein vo mehamaan ban ke aayen hain
She has entered her own house (my house) as a guest
Sitam to dekhi ye hai anjaan ban ke aayen hain
Look at her cruelty, She has come as a stranger (and will not belong to me)
Hamaare dil kii tadap aaj kuchh to kaam aaye
Today I will utilize all sorrows and pain my heart has experienced

Kisii kaa naam luun lab pe tumhaaraa naam aaye
Whenever a name comes to my lips, it will be yours
Khudaa kare ki muhabbat mein ye mukaam aaye
With God's blessing, may my love attain such height

Wohii hai saaz, wohii giit hai wohii manzar
The instrument is the same, as the song, the destination is the same
Har ek chiiz wohii hai nahiin ho tum wo magar
Everything is the same, only you are missing
Isii tarah se nigaahen woothi salaam aaye
Somehow let your eyes say salaam and come to me

Kisii kaa naam luun lab pe tumhaaraa naam aaye
Whenever a name comes to my lips, it will be yours
Khudaa kare ki muhabbat mein ye mukaam aaye
With God's blessing, may my love attain such height

Khuda Kare Ki Mohabbat Mein
Album : The Finest Ghazals
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/p/x/AqKpmaq2U9.As1NMvHdW/

God, this one is so heavenly beautiful, it touches the heart and leaves an impression that tells us that this man's voice is truly fantastic.
It is a special feeling to drown in the ocean of Mehdi Hassan's voice. His powerful expression, the sheer excellence of the poetry he chooses, and the way he intricately uses classical nuances make him a delight to hear. Whenever I listen to this one, ofcourse it has to be more than one time

Enjoy:

GHAZALS:

A student of Mehndi Hassan doing one of his rendition, and yes, you guessed it:

GHAZAL:KHUDA KARE KE MOHABAT:

Talat Aziz's true inspiration in ghazal singing came from Mehdi Hassan Saheb. According to Talat, Mehndi brought a revolution to ghazal singing with his unique style of blending classical ragas with ghazals.

SINGER: MEHNDI HASSAN

POET : WAJEEH IRFANI

(4) GUNCHA -E-SHOUQ: MP 3:

(Gunchaa-e-shauq lagaa hai khilane)2
The garden of desires has again started to bloom
Phir tujhe yaad kiyaa hai dil ne
especially, when ever I remember you
Gunchaa-e-shauq lagaa hai khilane
The garden of desires has again started to bloom

(Daastaanen hain lab-e-aalam par)2
The story of that incident is on every lips
(ham to chup chaap gaye the milane)2
even though our meeting was was kept a secret
phir tujhe yaad kiyaa hai dil ne
especially, whenever I remember you

Gunchaa-e-shauq lagaa hai khilane
The garden of desires has again started to bloom
Phir tujhe yaad kiyaa hai dil ne
especially, whenever I remember you
Gunchaa-e-shauq lagaa hai khilane
The garden of desires has again started to bloom

especially, when ever I remember you

Gunchaa-e-shauq lagaa hai khilane
The garden of desires has again started to bloom
Phir tujhe yaad kiyaa hai dil ne
especially, whenever I remember you
Gunchaa-e-shauq lagaa hai khilane
The garden of desires has again started to bloom

the gathering is beautified (by you)
(Aaj har chaak lagaa hai silane)2

GHAZAL: RANJISH HI SAHI :

SINGER: MEHNDI HASSAN

POET : AHMAD FARAZ

(6) RANJISH HI SAHI: MP3:

(Ranjish hi sahi dil hi dukhaanay kay liyay aa)2
Let it be anguish, come still to torment my heart
aa phir say mujhay chhorr kay jaanay kay liyay aa
Come, even if to leave me again
Ranjish hi sahi
aa phir say mujhay chhorr kay jaanay kay liyay aa
Come, even if to leave me again
Ranjish hi sahi dil hi dukhaanay kay liyay aa
Let it be anguish, come still to torment my heart
Ranjish hi sahi

(pehlay say maraasim na sahi phir bhi kabhi to)2
If not for our past association
rasm-o-rahay duniya hi nibhaanay kay liyay aa
Come to fulfill the rituals of the world
Ranjish hi sahi
rasm-o-rahay duniya hi nibhaanay kay liyay aa
Come to fulfill the rituals of the world

Ranjish hi sahi dil hi dukhaanay kay liyay aa
Let it be anguish, come still to torment my heart
Ranjish hi sahi

(kis kis ko bataayengay judaai kaa sabab ham)2
Who else must I explain the reason of separation
tu mujh se khafaa hai to zamaanay kay liyay aa
Come, despite your displeasure, to continue the ceremony
Ranjish hi sahi

(ab tak dil-e-khush_feham ko hain tujh say ummeedain)4
Till now, my heart suffers from some expectation
ye aakhari shammain bhi bujhaanay kay liyay aa
Come to snuff even these last candles of hope
Ranjish hi sahi
ye aakhari shammain bhi bujhaanay kay liyay aa
Come to snuff even these last candles of hope
Ranjish hi sahi

(ek umr say hun lazzat-e-giryaa se bhi mehruum)2
Too long have I been deprived of the pathos of longing
aye raahat-e-jaan mujh ko rulaanay kay liyay aa
Come my love, if only to make me weep again
Ranjish hi sahi
aye raahat-e-jaan mujh ko rulaanay kay liyay aa
Come my love, if only to make me weep again
Ranjish hi sahi

(kuchh to meri pindaar-e-mohabbat ka bharam rakh)5
Respect a little, the depth of my love for you
tu bhi to kabhi mujh ko manaanay kay liyay aa
Come someday to placate me as well
Ranjish hi sahi
tu bhi to kabhi mujh ko manaanay kay liyay aa
Come someday to placate me as well

(Ranjish hi sahi dil hi dukhaanay kay liyay aa)2
Let it be anguish, come still to torment my heart

NB Mehndi Hassan sings this one sometimes with three verses, and like the concert recording, he sang more verses, but lstening to any version and one would feel the pathos
and melodic voice control that he projected, as only the Mehndi can:

GHAZAL: CHARAG-E-TUUR JALAO:

SINGER: MEHNDI HASSAN

POET : FIRAQ GORAKPURI

(7) CHIRAG E TOOR JALAO: MP 3:

Chiraagh-e-tuur jalaao baraa andheraa hai
Zaraa naqaab uthaao baraa andheraa hai
Unveil your face my love and light up the place
with the mystical light, it is very dark in here

Mujhe khud apnii nigahon pe ait'maad nahiin
Mere kariib na aao baraa andheraa hai
Seeing you, I cannot believe how beautiful you are
Please do not come near me, it is very dark in here

Chiraagh-e-tuur jalaao baraa andheraa hai

Vo jin ke hote hai Khurshid aastiinon mein
Unhen kahiin se bulaao baraa andheraa hai
The one whose beauty is as bright as the sun
Please call her as it is too dark in here

Chiraagh-e-tuur jalaao baraa andheraa hai

Abhii to sub'h ke maathe kaa rang kaalaa hai
Abhii fareb na khaao, baraa andheraa hai
The Morning is still dark, I cannot discern reality from trickery
Do not let anyone trick you, as it is still too dark in here

Chiraagh-e-tuur jalaao baraa andheraa hai

GHAZAL: PYAR BHARE DO SHARMILE NAIN:

SINGER: MEHNDI HASSAN

POET : KWAJA PERVAIZ:

(8) PYAR BHARE DO SHARMILE NAIN: MP 3:

(Pyaar bhare do sharmile nain)2
Those shy eyes are brimming with love
Jinse mila mere dil ko chain
The ones that restores my heart's peace
koi jaane na kyoon mujh se sharmaaye
No one knows why they are so shy of me
Kaise mujhe tadpaaye
and make me restless(for a lack of better word)

Pyaar bhare do sharmile nain
Those shy eyes are brimming with love

Dil ye kahe geet main tere gaaoon
My heart tells me to only sing for you
Tu hi sune aur main gaata jaaoon
You are my only audience and I keep on singing
Tu jo rahe saath mere
If you remain with me always
Duniya ko thuk raaoon tera dil behlaaoon
I will ignore the world and concentrate only on keeping you happy

Pyaar bhare do sharmile nain
Those shy are eyes brimming with love

Dar hai mujhe tujh se bichar na jaaoon
I am scared that I may be seperated from you
Kho ke tujhe milne ki raah na paaoon
What if I lose you and unable to find my way back to you?
Aisa na ho jab bhi tera naam labon par laaoon
Oh, I hope it does not happen that whenever your name comes to my lips
main aansoo ban jaaoon
It results into tears

Jinse mila mere dil ko chain
The one that restores my heart's peace
koi jaane na kyoon mujh se sharmaaye
No one knows why she is so shy of me
Kaise mujhe tadpaaye
and make me restless(for a lack of better word)

(Pyaar bhare do sharmile nain)2
Those shy eyes brimming with love

GHAZAL: ZINDAGI MEIN TO SABHI:

SINGER: MEHNDI HASSAN

POET : QATEEL SHAFAI:

(9) ZINDAGI MEIN TO SABHI: MP 3:

Zindagii mein to sabhii pyaar kiyaa karte hain
In a lifetime, everyone loves someone
Main tau mar kar bhii merii jaan tujhe chaahuungaa
I will love you even when I am dead

Tuu milaa hai to ye ehsaas hu'aa hai mujhko
Ever since I have met you, I felt that
Ye merii umr muhabbat ke liye thorii hai
This life is too short for love (expressing love to you)
Ek zaraa saa Gham-e-dauraan kaa bhii haq hai jis par
The sorrows of the world for which one should spare a thought/breath
Main ne vo saans bhii tere liye rakh chhorii hai
Even that last breath, I have devoted to you
Tujh pe ho jaauungaa qurbaan tujhe chaahuungaa
I will die for you, so much I love you

Main tau mar kar bhii merii jaan tujhe chaahuungaa
I will love you even when I am dead
Zindagii mein to sabhii pyaar kiyaa karte hain
In a lifetime, everyone loves someone

Apne jazbaat mein naghmaat rachaane ke liye
To express my emotions in my songs
Main ne dharkan kii tarah dil mein basaayaa hai tujhe
I have kept you in my heart like a heartbeat
Main tasavvur bhii judaa'ii kaa bhalaa kaise karuun
How can I imagine, to be separated from you
Main ne qismat kii lakiiron se churaayaa hai tujhe
I have stole you for myself from the fate
Pyaar kaa ban ke nigehbaan tujhe chaahuungaa
I will be the caretaker for your love, so much I love you

Main tau mar kar bhii merii jaan tujhe chaahuungaa
I will love you even when I am dead
Zindagii mein to sabhii pyaar kiyaa karte hain
In a lifetime, everyone loves someone

Terii har chaap se jalte hain khayaalon mein chiraag
The sounds of your footsteps light up my thoughts
Jab bhii tuu aaye jagaataa hu'aa jaaduu aaye
Whenever you appear, it is like live magic
Tujhko chhuu luun to phir ai jaan-e-tamannaa mujhko
If I touch you, my love
Der tak apne badan se terii Khushbuu aaye
Your fragrance eminates from my body for a long time
Tuu bahaaron kaa hai unvaan tujhe chaahuungaa
You are the one that tha Spring talks about, so much I love you

Main tau mar kar bhii merii jaan tujhe chaahuungaa
I will love you even when I am dead
Zindagii mein to sabhii pyaar kiyaa karte hain
In a lifetime, everyone loves someone

GHAZAL: BAAT KARNI MUJHAY MUSHKIL:

SINGER: MEHNDI HASSAN

POET : BAHADUR SHAH ZAFAR:

(10) BAAT KARNE MUJHE MUSHKILL:MP 3:

(Baat karni mujhe mushkil kabhi aisi to na thi)2
It was never as difficult for me to talk, as it is now
Jaisi ab hai, teri mehfil, kabhi aisi to na thi
Your gathering has never before been, like it is now
Baat karni

(Le gayaa cheen ke kaun aaj teraa sabr-o-qaraar?)2
Who has taken away your peace of mind and patience
Beqaraari tujhe, ae dil! kabhi aisi to na thi
My heart, you were never as uneasy like you are now

Baat karni mujhe mushkil kabhi aisi to na thi
It was never as difficult for me to talk, as it is now
Baat karni

(Un ki aankhon ne, Khudaa jaane, kiyaa kyaa jaadoo)2
God only knows, what magic her eyes have weaved
Yeh tabeeyat meri maa'il(attracted) kabhi aisi to na thi
My feelings for her was never as attractive as it is now

Baat karni mujhe mushkil kabhi aisi to na thi
It was never as difficult for me to talk, as it is now
Baat karni mujhe

Chashme qatil mere dushman ki hamesha lekin
Jaise ab hogaee qatil kabhi aisee to na thi
Your gathering has never before been, like it is now

(Baat karni mujhe mushkil kabhi aisi to na thi)2
It was never as difficult for me to talk, as it is now
Baat karni

Kyaa sabab tu jo bigar taa hai 'zafar' se har baar?
What is the reason, you get offended at 'zafar' all the time
Khoo teri hoor-e-shimaa'il kabhi aisi to na thi
You, the best angel, never had a habit, like you have now

(Baat karni mujhe mushkil kabhi aisi to na thi)2
It was never as difficult for me to talk, as it is now
Jaisi ab hai, teri mehfil, kabhi aisi to na thi
Your gathering has never before been, like it is now
Baat karni

SINGER: MEHNDI HASSAN:

POET : TASLEEM FAZLI

(11) RAFTA RAFTA WOH MERI: MP 3:

(Rafta rafta woh meri hasti ka saamaan ho gayey)2
Slowly and steadily, she became the part of my identity,
(Pehlay jaan, phir jaan-e-jaan,)2 phir jaan-e-jaana ho gayey
First love, then life and then she became the reason of my life
Rafta rafta woh meri hasti ka saamaan ho gayey
Slowly and steadily, she became the part of my identity

Pehlay jaan, phir jaan-e-jaan, phir jaan-e-jaana ho gayey
First love, then life and then she became the reason of my life
Rafta rafta woh meri hasti ka saamaan ho gayey
Slowly and steadily, she became the part of my identity,

(Din-b-din badnay gayi us husn ki raana iyaan,)2
As each day passed, her beauty was crossing all the limits,
(Pehlay Gul, phir gul-badan,)2 phir gul-badamaan ho gayey
First she was like a rose bud, then a very delicate rose and
then she became like a fully blossomed garden

Rafta rafta woh meri hasti ka saamaan ho gayey
Slowly and steadily, she became the part of my identity,
(Pehlay jaan, phir jaan-e-jaan,)2 phir jaan-e-jaana ho gayey
First love, then life and then she became the reason of my life
Rafta rafta woh meri hasti ka saamaan ho gayey
Slowly and steadily, she became the part of my identity,

(Aap to nazdeek say nazdeek-tar aatay gayey,)4
You came close and then started getting closer,
(Pehlay dil, phir dilruba,)2 phir dil kay mehmaan ho gayey
First part of my heart then my heart's desire then came a beloved guest
and finally you became part of me

Rafta rafta woh meri hasti ka saamaan ho gayey,
Slowly and steadily, she became the part of my identity

(Pyar jab hadd se barha)2 saare Taqaloof mith gayey,)2
When the love grew beyond the limits, all inhibitions were abandoned
**(Aap se phir tum huay)2 phir tu ka Khunwaan hogayey
The formalities were no longer observed until you bacame a part of me

Rafta rafta woh meri hasti ka saamaan ho gayey,
Slowly and steadily, she became the part of my identity
(Pehlay jaan, phir jaan-e-jaan,)2 phir jaanayjaana ho gayey
First love, then life and then she became the reason of my life
Rafta rafta woh meri hasti ka saamaan ho gayey,
Slowly and steadily, she became the part of my identity

AAP= FORMAL YOU,
TUM=YOU FOR A FRIEND,
TU=YOU FOR VERY CLOSE

Jaanay kia kia poochh rahe hain ye jaanay pehchaanay log
Wonder what kind of questions their peers/friends are asking form them?

GHAZAL:TUJHKO AATI HI NAHIN

MEHNDI HASSAN:

POET:SUFI GHULAM MUSTAFA TABASSUM

(13) TUJHKO AATI HI NAHIN: MP :3:

(Tujh ko aate hii nahiin chhupane ke andaaz abhii)2
You do not know the art of hiding (emotions) yet
Mere siine mein hain larzaan terii aavaaz abhii
My heart is still throbbing with the sound of your voice
(Tujh ko aate hii nahiin chhupane ke andaaz abhii)2
You do not know the art of hiding (emotions) yet

(Us ne dekhaa hii nahiin dard kaa aagaaz abhii)2
He has not seen the beginning of pain (that love causes)
Ishq ko apanii tamannaaon pe hai naaz abhii
He is still proud of the love and its desires

Mere siine mein hain larzaan terii aavaaz abhii
My heart is still throbbing with the sound of your voice
(Tujh ko aate hii nahiin chhupane ke andaaz abhii)2
You do not know the art of hiding (emotions) yet

(Tujh ko manzil pe pahunchane kaa hai daavaa ham dam)2
I am committed to get you to your destination my love
Mujh ko anjaam nazar aataa hai aagaaz abhii
I have already seen the end, but we have just started,

Mere siine mein hain larzaan terii aavaaz abhii
My heart is still throbbing with the sound of your voice
(Tujh ko aate hii nahiin chhupane ke andaaz abhii)2
You do not know the art of hiding (emotions) yet

(Kis qadar gosh-bar-aavaaz hai Khaamoshii-e-shab)2
The sound of silence is resounding in my ears
Koii naalaa ki hai fariyaad kaa kaa dar baaz koii
Why this wailing, has someone given you a cause to complain?

Mere siine mein hain larzaan terii aavaaz abhii
My heart is still throbbing with the sound of your voice
(Tujh ko aate hii nahiin chhupane ke andaaz abhii)2
You do not know the art of hiding (emotions) yet

(Mere chehare kii hansii rang-e-shikastaa meraa)2
My laughter is hiding my sadness and failure
Tere ashkon mein 'Tabassum' kaa hai andaaz abhii
Your tears, Tabassum, still have the art of flowing

Mere siine mein hain larzaan terii aavaaz abhii
My heart is still throbbing with the sound of your voice
(Tujh ko aate hii nahiin chhupane ke andaaz abhii)2
You do not know the art of hiding (emotions) yet

GHAZAL:YUN ZINDAGI KI RAH MEIN

MEHNDI HASSAN:

POET:QATEEL SHAFAAI

(14) YUN ZINDAGI KI RAH MEIN: MP 3:

Yun zindagi ki raah mein takra gya koi
I ran into someone on the road of life
Ik roshni andhroun mein bikhra gya koi
Someone brought light into the darkness surrounding me

Woh haadsa woh pehli mulaakat kya kahoon
What can I tell you about this incident,
when I met her for the first time

Kitni ajab soorat e haalaat kya kahoon
I cannot tell you how strange those circumstances were
Woh kehar woh ghazab woh jafa mujh ko yaad hai
That terrible and strange day, her deceit, I remember it all
Woh uski be-rukhi ki adaa mujh ko yaad hai
I also remembered her pretended unfriendly behaviour
Mit-ta nahi hai zehn pay yun chhaa gya koi
Such a lasting impression I am unable to remove from my conscious mind

Yun zindagi ki raah mein takra gya koi
I ran into someone on the road of life

Pehlay mujhay woh dekh kay barham si ho gayee
At first when she saw me, she got upset
Phir apnay he haseen khyaaloun mein kho gayee
And then she was lost in her own thoughts
Bechaargi pe meri usay reham aagya
But she felt pity for my sad condition
Shayed meray tarapnay ka andaaz bhaa gya
Perhaps she liked the way I was pining for her
Saansoun se bhi kareeb mere aa gya koi
Someone has become closer than my breath is to me

Yun zindagi ki raah mein.....
I ran into someone on the road of life

Yun usnay pyar say meri baanhoun ko chhoo liya
The way she touched my arm with love
Manzil nay jaisay shauk ki raahoun ko chhoo liya
It was like the destination reached out and touched the road
Ik pal mein dil pe kaisi qayamat guzar gayee
In that one moment, my heart dies a thousand deaths
Rag rag mein uskE HUSAUN KI khushbu bikhar gayee
I was overwhelmed by her beauty which surrounded me like fragrances
Zulfoun ko mere shaanay pe lehra gya koi
Someone let their hair lay on my shoulders

Yun zindagi ki raah mein takra gya koi
I ran into someone on the road of life

Ab is dil-e-tabaah ki haalat na poochiye
Now do not ask the condition of my heart
Be-naam aarzu'oun ki lizzat na poochiye
Do not ask me about the joys of desires (unmentionable)
Ik ajnabi tha rooh ka armaan ban gya
This stranger became the desires of my soul
Ik haadsa tha pyar ka, unwaan ban gya
It was a co-incident but it became a Legend of Love
Manzil ka raasta mujhe dikhla gya koi
Someone showed me the road to my destination

Yun zindagi ki raah mein takra gya koi
I ran into someone on the road of life

GHAZAL:AB KE HUM BICHDE TO SHAAYAD:

MEHNDI HASSAN:

POET: AHMAD FARAAZ

(15) AB KE HUM BICHDE TO SHAAYAD:MP 3:

Ab kay hum bichday to shaayad kabhi khawabon may miley,
This time if we part, then we may meet in the dreams
Jis tarah sookhay huey phool kitabon mein miley
Like dry flowers are found in books

Tu khuda hai na mera ishq farishton jaisa,
Neither you are God nor is my love like an angel,
Dono insaan hain to kyon itnay hijaabon mein miley
If we both are human beings, then why should we meet in hiding

Ab kay hum bichday to shaayad kabhi khawabon may miley,
Now that we are parting our ways, may be we will meet in dreams,

ghum-e dunya bhi ghum-e yaar mein shamil kar lo
Why not add the sorrows of the world to the sorrows caused by my beloved
nasha bartha hain sharabein jo sharaboon main milain
After all when the drinks are mixed, the intoxication increases

Ab kay hum bichday to shaayad kabhi khawabon may miley,
Now that we are parting our ways, may be we will meet in dreams,

Ab na woh main hoon na tu hain na woh maazi hai `Faraaz',
You and I are not the same, nor do we have the same destination Faraz
Jaisay do saayey tamana kay sehraon mein miley
It is like two shadows meeting in the desert of wishes

Ab kay hum bichday to shaayad kabhi khawabon may miley,
Now that we are parting our ways, may be we will meet in dreams,
Jis tarah sookhay huey phool kitabon mein miley
Like dry flowers are found in books

GHAZAL:MUJHAY TUM NAZAR SAY:

MEHNDI HASSAN:

POET:MASROOR RANA:

His performances of Ghazals inscribes in listeners mind that sense of humanity that is exclusively of its own. Therefore, he holds a singular place in our hearts. The song below had evoked tears even from the strongest of Lovers:

(16) MUJHAY TUM NAZAR SAY::

Mujhe tum nazar say gira tou rahe ho
I know that I am falling, in your estimation
(My worth is going down in your eyes)
Mujhe tum kabhi bhi bhula na sakoge
You will never be able to forget me
Na jaanaye mujhe kyoun yaqeen ho chala hai
I dont know why I firmly believe that
Meray pyaar ko tum mitta na sakoge
You will not be able to anhilate my love (for you)

Mujhe tum nazar say
I know that my worth is falling

Meri yaad hogi jidhar jaoge tum
My memories will follow you whereever you go
Kabhi naghma bun kay kabhi bun kay aanso
Sometimes in forms of tears and sometime as songs
Tarapta mujhe har taruf paoge tum
Where ever you look you will find me pining for you
Shamma jo jalaee hai meri wafa naye
My devotion/love is like a lighted candle
Bhujana bhi chahoo bhuja na sakoge
Even if you wish to extinguish this candle you will not succeed

Mujhe tum nazar say
I know that my worth is falling

Kabhi naam baatoun main aya jo mera
When my name comes up in your chit-chat
Tou baychain ho ho kay dil thaam loge
You will become restless and try to calm your heart
Nighaoun main chayega ghum ka andhera
You will be blinded by Darkness of Sorrows
Kissi ne jo poocha sabub aansoun ka
When someone wants to enquire about the tears you are shedding
Batana bhi chaaho bata na sakoge
Even if you want to confide, you would not be able to

Mujhe tum nazar say gira tou rahe ho
I know that I am falling, in your estimation
My worth is going down in your eyes

Mujhe tum kabhi bhi bhula na sakoge
You will never be able to forget me

Asj, we're happy to see you back. This is a wonderful Mehndi ghazal. You can't do this to yourself. Think of the happier times. Think of things that will make you smile and laugh.

There I go, I edit instead of quote and this brought back a smile, hope you do not mind.

My brother, the grief and hurt will continue for some time.........something I wish that I could erase, cannot but in time I guess I will be able to heal.

Joannie, it is nice to be back with my friends, the flashbacks will come, those of happier and sad times, but all this make up the healing process, and the blow that fate dealt us, will someday subside.
Thanks for the concern.

Gosh I am making this Mehndi Hassan thread somewhat sentimental;

We shall get to the completion of the other 8 songs and translation soon and then we go to Ustad Ghulam Alli.

GHAZAL:TUM ZID TU KAR RAHE HO:

MEHNDI HASSAN:

POET:????????

(17) TUM ZID TO KAR RAHAY HO

Tum zid to kar rahe ho, hum kya tumhe sunaaye
You are forcing me but what should I sing for you?
nagme jo kho gaye hain, unko kahan se laayen
The songs that are lost, where should I go looking for them

Tum zid to kar rahe ho
You are forcing me

(Kuch der mere gham ko, mahsoos karke dekhen)2
For just a little while, try to feel my sorrow
ek raahe bekasi se, (koi guzar ke dekhen)2
Some one should try and walk on the road of hopelessness
saaye mein ansuoon ke, ham kaise muskuraayen
In the shadows of tears, how should I smile?

Tum zid to kar rahe ho
You are forcing me

(Haalat ke iraade, Majboor ho gaye hain)2
The circumstances have made me helpless
nazdeek aate aate, (ham door ho gaye hain)2
When I was getting so close to you, we have been driven apart
In vadeeyo se kahdo, ab hamko bhool jaye
Tell this beautiful vista, that it is best to forget me
nagme jo kho gaye hain, unko kahan se laayen
The songs that are lost, where should I go looking for them

Tum zid to kar rahe ho
You are forcing me

Trans:Ranjana

In this ghazal, there is a lot of similarity between the voices of Mukesh Chand Mathur and Mehndi Hassan:

Ustad Mehdi Hassan explaining the intricacies of music to Munni.

His deep husky voice respondet with pathos is one of the most moving experiences for music lovers. He has tremendous control over all the technical ragas which he renders in his ghazals with incomparable dexterity. His ever-popular ghazals include among others "Ranjish hi Sahi". "Baat karni mujhe mushkil", "Ghazab kiya tere waade pe" and "gulon mein rang bhare".

GHAZAL:MUDDAT HUI HAI YAAR KO:

MEHNDI HASSAN:

POET:MIRZA GHALIB:

(18) MUDDAT HUI HAI YAAR KO

(Muddat huee hai yaar ko mehmaan kiye hue)2
It's been a while since I called my beloved, a guest
Josh-e-qadah se bazm chiraaghaan kiye hue
A while since a gathering was heated up with the vigour of goblets
Muddat huee hai yaar ko mehmaan kiye hue
It's been a while since I called my beloved, a guest

(Jee Dhoondta hai fir wohee fursat ke raat din)2
My heart searches again, for those same old days and nights, when
Baithe rahaim tasavvur-e-jaanaan kiye hue
I used to sit just like that, imagining about my beloved

Muddat huee hai yaar ko
It's been a while since I called my beloved, a guest

ik nau_bahaar-e-naaz ko taaqe hai fir nigaah
again my eyes are looking at the inspiration of the new spring(my beloved)
chehra furoGH-e-mai se gulistaaN kiye hue
the beauty(brightness) of your face is making the flowers of the gardens intoxicated

(Muddat huee hai yaar ko mehmaan kiye hue)2
It's been a while since I called my beloved, a guest

GHalib hamein na ched ki fir josh-e-ashq se
Ghalib don't tease me with the enthusiasm of tears, for
Baithe hain ham tahayya-e-toofaan kiye hue
I sit with the determination of facing a storm
Josh-e-qadah se bazm chiraaghaan kiye hue
A while since a gathering was heated up with the vigour of goblets

Muddat huee hai yaar ko mehmaan kiye hue
It's been a while since I called my beloved, a guest

Karta hoon jama'a fir jigar-e-lakht-lakht ko
Again, I gather the scattered pieces of my heart
Arsa hua hai daawat-e-mizhgaan kiye hue
It's been a while since my eyelids have been given the treat of tears

Fir waz'a-e-'ehtiyaat se rukane laga hai dam
Again, I feel uncomfortable of observing the wordly etiquette
Barson hue hain chaak girebaan kiye hue
It's been years since I have given way to my passion of sorrows for you

Trans: Ranjana/????

This Ghazal consists of fifteen verses, only three were sung by Mehndi Hassan:

Treated as in partying. Ghalib's heart has broken into many pieces once
again, due to some sad news. It's been a while since he last cried. Now, the
news is so bad that he won't stop crying - a real treat for his eyelids.

A person who tears up his shirt is either mad, or clamours because of pitiable
state of affairs. Ghalib has, again, been hiding his actual state of
affairs of penury and sorrow, thanks to his careful behaviour. His normal
nature should have been to tear up his shirt. He is feeling ill at ease in
his mind, to such an extent that he is choking from it.

When a man cries, he either feels depressed, or consoles himself saying
'..no, this is not the way. i have to do something. crying is not the
solution'. Ghalib is in the latter frame of mind. His repeated
crying (josh-e-ashq), has steeled him and he has the determination, now, to
face a storm. So he tells himself 'Don't tease me and make me cry again. I
sit with a determination of facing a storm'.

Will get back to this one for trans for the second verse:

So much enjoyment in this ghazal thread, I find myself going back to Jagjit Singh's selections, ever so often.

GHAZAL:RAUSHAN JAMAAL E YAAR:

MEHNDI HASSAN:

POET:HASRAT MOHINI:

(19) ROSHAN JAMAAL E YAAR:

Raushan jamaal-e-yaar se hai anjuman tamaam
The gathering is glowing due to the brilliant presence of my beloved
Dahakaa huaa hai aatish-e-gul se chaman tamaam
Just as the garden is aflame with the fiery beauty of the flower

Hairat Guruur-e-husn se shokhii se iztaraab
Steeped in vain of its own beauty and in mischevious ways
Dil ne bhii tere siikh liye hain chalan tamaam
Your heart too seems to have learnt all the worldly ways.

Allaah re jism-e-yaar kii khuubii se khud-ba-khud
Oh God the goodness my beloved, has spontaneously caused
Rangiiniyon mein Duub gayaa pairahan tamaam
Her attire (dress) to appear delightfully coloured

Raushan jamaal-e-yaar se hai anjuman tamaam
The gathering is glowing due to the brilliant presence of my beloved

Dekho to husn-e-yaar kii jaaduu nigaahiyaan
Just look at the magical ways of my beloved's glance
Behosh ik nazar mein hu_ii anjuman tamaam
The entire gathering is mesmerized simply by one glance

Raushan jamaal-e-yaar se hai anjuman tamaam
The gathering is glowing due to the brilliant presence of my beloved
Dahakaa huaa hai aatish-e-gul se chaman tamaam
Just as the garden is aflame with the fiery beauty of the flower

NB This one was sung by so many singers Jagjit Singh, Abida Parveen and many other but Mehndi Hassan certainly affixes his authority to this, no wonder he leads whilst others follow. Such is the touch of genious that Mehndi Hassan provides his multitude of fans.

Lyrics: Meer Taqi Meer
Artist: mehndi hassan

Patta patta, boota boota, haal hamaaraa jaane hai,
Every leaf and every shrub here knows of my state
Jaane na jaane gul hi na jaane, baagh to saaraa jaane hai
It is the flower that is unaware, but all the bower knows

Chaaragari beemari-e-dil ki rasm-e-shahr-e-husn nahin,
It is not their way, to heal: these denizens of the city of love
Warna dilbar naadaan bhi is dard ka chaara jaane hai
Yet even the innocent ones know the cure to a sick heart

Patta patta, boota boota, haal hamaaraa jaane hai,
Every leaf and every shrub here knows of my state

Mehr-o-wafa-o-lutf-o-inaayat, ek se waaqif in mein nahin,
Not one here knows of kindness, loyalty, grace or generosity
Aur to sab kuch tanz-o-kanaya, ramz-o-ishaara jaane hai
Cruelty, sarcasm, mockery and taunts, of these they know

Patta patta, boota boota, haal hamaaraa jaane hai,
Every leaf and every shrub here knows of my state

Will put this in its right perspective later:

NB This Ghazal has like about eleven or twelve verses, but only three were sung by MH
We shall try to bring you the explanation in its entirety as the poet meant it to be:

Aage us mutkabbar ke ham Khuda Khuda kiya karte hain,
We prostrated before the arrogant one, called him ˜Khuda'
Kab maujud Khuda ko woh maghrur khud-aara jaane hai
In the name of God, what does that insolent one know of Him

Aashiq saa to saada koi aur na hoga duniya mein,
There is no one in the world quite as naïve as a lover
Ji ke zian ko ishq mein uske apna waara jaane hai
The squandering of his heart he sees as ecstasy

Aashiq to murda hai hamesha ji uthta hai dekhe use,
He is but a corpse, the lover, but see! he lives again
Yaar ke aa jaane ko yakaayak umr do baara jaane hai
She has come of a sudden and it is another lease on life

Kya kya fitne sar par uske laata hai maashooq apnaa
What disasters our lover brings down on his own head,
Jis bedil betaab-o-tavaan ko ishq ka maaraa jaane hai
That restless, listless soul we had given up as lost

Tashna-e-khun hai, apna kitna ˜Mir' bhi naadaan, talkhi-kash,
Parched for blood he is, and ˜Mir' the simpleton
Damdaar aab-e-tegh ko uske aab-e-gawara jaane hai
Thinks the sharp edge of a blade an elixir

Will get Ranjana expertise on these verses:
Yaahi shikaar-farebi par magroor hai woh sayyad bachcha
Ta'er udte hawa men saare apni ussaara jaane hai

[Yaahi = this; shikaar = prey; farebi = deceitful; magroor = arrogant; sayyad = hunter; ussara = limitless, endless]

Rakhnon se deewaar-e-chaman ke munh ko le hai chipaa ya'ani
Un suraakhon ke tuk rahne ko sou ka nazaaraa jaane hai

[rakhna = gap; deewar-e-chaman = garden wall; suraakh = hole, aperture; sou = ?; souq?]

Lagne na de bas ho to uske gohar-e-gosh ke baale tak
Usko falak chashm-e-mai-o-khor ki teetli ka taaraa jaane hai

[gohar = pearl; gosh = ear; baale = earring; falak = sky; chashm = eye; mai = wine]

Mir at his most convoluted. An earring, a pearl, a winejar and a star in the sky - there are all these elements; and whether Mir means to see a pearl hanging from an earlobe through the spout of a winejar and perceives it as a star in the sky, or the other way round, I have no idea. I may add, after reading it a sufficient number of times, I no longer care.

GHAZALS: DILE NADAAN TUJHAY HUWA KYA HAI

MEHNDI HASSAN:

POET: MIRZA GHALIB

(21) DILE NADAAN TUJHAY HUWA KYA HAI:

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?
Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai
After all, what is the remedy for this pain?

Hum hain mushtaaq aur woh beyzaar,
We are impatient, and he is disgusted
Ya-Ilaahi yeh maajra kya hai
Oh ! God, what is the matter out here

YE PAREE CHEHRA LOG KAISE HAI
GHAMZA O ISH AWO ADA KYA HAI

Dil-e-naadan tujhay hua kya hai,
Oh Ignorant-heart, what happened to you,

Main bhi muh mein zabaan rakhtaa hain
I too have a tongue in my mouth
Kaash pooche ke mudda'aa kya hai
If only I was asked about my view

Dil-e-naadan tujhay hua kya hai,
Oh Ignorant-heart, what happened to you,
Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai
After all, what is the remedy for this pain?

GHAZALS: DILE NADAAN TUJHAY HUWA KYA HAI

MEHNDI HASSAN:

POET: MIRZA GHALIB

(21) DILE NADAAN TUJHAY HUWA KYA HAI:

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?
Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai
After all, what is the remedy for this pain?

Hum hain mushtaaq aur woh beyzaar,
We are impatient, and he is disgusted
Ya-Ilaahi yeh maajra kya hai
Oh ! God, what is the matter out here

YE PAREE CHEHRA LOG KAISE HAI
GHAMZA O ISH AWO ADA KYA HAI

Dil-e-naadan tujhay hua kya hai,
Oh Ignorant-heart, what happened to you,

Main bhi muh mein zabaan rakhtaa hain
I too have a tongue in my mouth
Kaash pooche ke mudda'aa kya hai
If only I was asked about my view

Dil-e-naadan tujhay hua kya hai,
Oh Ignorant-heart, what happened to you,
Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai
After all, what is the remedy for this pain?

Ham ko unse wafaa ki hai ummeed
I have hopes of faithfulness from her,
Jo nahi jaante wafa kya hai
Who knows not what faithfulness is

Haan, bhala kar, tera bhala hoga
Yes, do good, and good will come to you
Aur darvesh ki sada kya hai
What but this does the mendicant say?

Maine mana ke kuch nahin "Ghalib"
I admit that it is nothing, "Ghalib"
Muft haath aaye to bura kya hai
What is bad if it comes to hand gratis?

Hi Alex one song would only wet the appetite, one hour would more or less be satisfying to the fans of Mehdi Hassan.

But we will take one anyday:

POET: MIRZA GHALIB

DIL E NADAAN TUJHAY HUWA KYA HAI

dil-e-nadan tujhe hua kya hai
akhir is dard ki dawa kya hai

kash pucho k mudda kya hai

jab k tujh bin nahi koi maujud

gamaza-o-ishwa-o-ada kya hai

shikan-e-zulf-e-ambari kyon hai

sabza-o-gul kahan se aye hain

Trans Ranjana

Mirza Ghalib, in his ghazal "Dil e nadaan" has spoken of love, justice, human values, mysticism etc., each in a different couplet. Couplets in a ghazal are like gems of a beautiful necklace the luster of which is timeless.

NB This one was sung by so many singers Jagjit Singh, Abida Parveen and many other but Mehndi Hassan certainly affixes his authority to this, no wonder he leads whilst others follow. Such is the touch of genious that Mehndi Hassan provides his multitude of fans.
..

A lovely ghazal indeed, but these high Urdu is loaded with Persian, and not easy to comprehend , thanks for the translation. All these poets are masters of Persian as well.

The Mughuls (1526-1857 AD)

The most important, politically and culturally, dynasty of Indian muslim kings was that of Mughals. Mughal dynasty started with Babar defeating Ibrahim Lodhi in 1526 and continued till Aurangzeb's death in 1707. Minor mughal kings ruled Delhi until 1857, when Bahadur Shah Zafar was finally banished to Rangoon. These years saw the emergence of Dhrupad as the main style of music in the courts of north India. That was also the beginning of Khayal and Ghazal as styles of music which came into prominence later.

Nayak Bhakshu, an eminent Dhrupad singer and composer served in the court of Humayun the second emperor after Babar. It was during this period that Dhrupad became the court music of Mughal emperors. Later a thousand of his lyrics were collected under orders from Emeror Shah Jahan and are called Sahasras or Hazar Dhurpad.

During the reign of Akbar several prominent dhrupad artists flourished. Most prominent among them was Tansen. Tansen is credited with reshaping the entire of Dhruvapada music by the addition of new Persian ornamentations in Meend, Gamaka etc. He is also credited with the development of the Rabab (Rudra-Veena). Tansen also created many new ragas which, up till now, are regarded as the foremost ragas of Northern India. Some of these are noteworthy, e.g. Darbari Kanada, Darbari Todi, Miya ki Malhar, Miya ki Sarang. Other famous musicians in Akbar's court were Baiju Bawra, Ramdas and Tanrang. Just like Amir Khusro, with Tansen it is difficult to separate myth from reality. Stories and myths about him and his duels with Baiju Bawra abound. Almost every major Gharana of present day Hindustani trace their lineage to Tansen. Swami Haridas of Brindavan who is considered the guru of Tansen was an influential musician during that time.

Akbar's son Jahangir(1605-1627) and grandson Shah Jahan(1627-1658) were both great patrons of art and music flourished under their rule. Various disciples of Swami Haridas (and Tansen) spreadout and became court musicians in various small kingdom's in the Mughal empire like Jaipur, Punjab, Gwalior, Lucknow etc. The famous Seni Gharanas were founded by the sons of son-in-law of Tansen.

Aurangzeb (1658-1707), a religious fanatic, During the tenth year of his reign, banned music. He forbade its presence in court as well as all public performances. Court officials entered households and smashed musical instruments. Aurangzeb's dislike of music is well illustrated in a common story. It appears that during his administration a group of musicians, disheartened with their lack of patronage, took some musical instruments and wrapped them in the manner of a corpse and held a funeral procession in protest. Aurangzeb enquires about the procession and is told it is a burial to signify the death of music. Whereupon it is said that the emperor declares, "Good! bury it so deep that never a sound should be heard again". Musicians either went underground or simply took up other means of livelihood. The situation can be compared to the fate of Iranian music after the Islamic revolution of 1979.

Mughal empire broke up soon after the death of Aurangzeb. Provential governors declared independence and Mughal emperor's authority didn't reach far outside Delhi's redfort. But, music did come back to the court in Delhi. Beginning of Khayal style of Hindustani music can be traced to the court of Muhammad Shah 'Rangile' (1720-1748). Popularly called Rangile because of his patronage of arts. But repeated external attacks on the empire by Afghans, Persians and others was not conducive to it. The last emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar II (1837-1857) was a great patron of music and literature. Music, esp. Ghazals, flourished in his court. With the defeat of Indian kings in the first was of independence, the emperor was exiled to Rangoon bringing an end to the Mughal empire and 650 years of Muslim rule in Delhi.

This one was also done by Mehndi Hassan and quite a few other artiste and believe me, it was very popular:

GHAZAL:UZR AANE MEIN BHI HAI AUR BULAATE:

MEHNDI HASSAN:

POET: DAAG DEHLAVI:

UZR AANE MEIN BHI HAI AUR BULAATE BHI NAHIN

Uzr aane mein bhi hai aur bulaate bhi nahin
You hesitate to come [here] and do not call me, either
Baa'is-e-tark-e-mulaaqaat bataate bhi nahin
You don't inform me of the reasons for terminating relations, either!

Uzr aane mein bhi hai aur bulaate bhi nahin
You hesitate to come [here] and do not call me, either

Kya kaha phir toh kaho "Hum nahin sunte teri"
What did you say? Please repeat, "I do not listen to you."
Nahin suntey toh hum aiso ko bataatey bhi nahin
If you do not listen, I also do not speak to such people, either!

Uzr aane mein bhi hai aur bulaate bhi nahin
You hesitate to come [here] and do not call me, either

Khoob parda hai ke chilaman se lage baithe hain
There is much hidden when you are sitting alongside the curtain
Saaf chupte bhi nahi saamane aate bhi nahin
You do not clearly hide and do not come forward, either!

Uzr aane mein bhi hai aur bulaate bhi nahin
You hesitate to come [here] and do not call me, either

Ho chuka qata ta'lluq toh jafaayen kyon hon
If the relation has been severed, then why continue oppressions?
Jinko matalab nahin rahataa hai woh sataate bhi nahin
Those who [truly] no longer have a reason to, do not [further] tease, either!

Uzr aane mein bhi hai aur bulaate bhi nahin
You hesitate to come [here] and do not call me, either

Zist se tang ho ae Daag toh jeetey kyon hon
If you are sick of life, O Daag, then why do you live?
Jaan pyari bhi nahin jaan se jaate bhi nahin
Life is not valuable to you and you do not leave it, either!

Uzr aane mein bhi hai aur bulaate bhi nahin
You hesitate to come [here] and do not call me, either

Translation:??????

Daag's wit is so refreshing.. he makes sentimental points in the most brilliant of ways. The things he says in this poem, had they been said by someone else might sound depressing. His choice of wordings is so cutting... but one never gets bored or down while reading/listening. Truly a remarkable poet!

GHAZALS: MOHABAT KARNE WALAY KAM NO HOGE

MEHNDI HASSAN:

POET: HAFEEZ HOSHIAPURI

(22) MOHABAT KARNE WALAY KAM NA HOGI:

Mohabbat karanevaale kam na honge
There will be no scarcity of people who will love you
Terii mahafil mein lekin ham na honge
I will be the one missing from your party (presence)

Mohabbat karanevaale kam na honge
There will be no scarcity of people who will love you

Zamaane bhar ke Ghum yaa ik teraa Ghum
One can take on the sorrows caused by the world or just by you
Ye Ghum hogaa to kitane Ghum na honge
How many sorrows I shall avoid by choosing the sorrows caused by you

Terii mahafil mein lekin ham na honge
I will be the one missing from your party (presence)
Mohabbat karanevaale kam na honge
There will be no scarcity of people who will love you

Agar tuu ittafaaqan mil bhii jaaye
Even if we incidentally meet
Terii furqat ke sadamein kam na honge
The trauma of our separation will not lessen

Terii mahafil mein lekin ham na honge
I will be the one missing from your party (presence)
Mohabbat karanevaale kam na honge
There will be no scarcity of people who will love you

Dilon ki ulajhanein badatii raheingii
The complications of the heart will keep on increasing
Agar kuchh mashvare baaham na honge
If we do not not take each other's council

Terii mahafil mein lekin ham na honge
I will be the one missing from your party (presence)
Mohabbat karanevaale kam na honge
There will be no scarcity of people who will love you

'Hafeez' un se main jitanaa bad_gumaaN huun
Hafeez, the extent to which I am doubtful of her (love/intention)
Vo mujh se is qadar barham na honge
They certainly would not be as upset with me

Terii mahafil mein lekin ham na honge
I will be the one missing from your party (presence)
Mohabbat karanevaale kam na honge
There will be no scarcity of people who will love you

MEHNDI HASSAN GHAZAL:WO TOH NA MIL SAKAY HAMAY:

SINGER: MEHNDI HASSAN

POET : NASIR

23 WOH TOH NA MIL SAKE HAMEN, RUSWAYIAN MILI

WOH TOH NA MIL SAKE HAMEN, RUSWAYIAN MILI
I DID NOT GET MY BELOVED, INSTEAD I GOT NOTORIETY
LEKIN HAMARE ISHK KO RANAIYAN MILI

AAKHON MEIN UNKI DOOBKE DEKHA HAI BARHAAN
WHEN I LOOKED DEEP INTO HER EYES(SOUL)
JINKI THI AARZOO, NA WOH GEHRAINYA MILI
I DID NOT FIND THE DEPTH THAT I EXPECTED

AAINA RAKH KE SAAMNE, AVAAZ DI USEIN
I PUT AN MIRROR IN FRONT OF ME, AND CALLED OUT TO HER
USKE BAGHER JAB MUJHEN TANHAIYEN MILI
THAT WAS THE EXTENT TO MY LONELINESS WITHOUT HER

AAYE THE VO NAZAR MUJHE, PHOOLON KE AAS PAAS
I THOUGHT I SAW HER, SOMEWHERE AROUND THE FLOWERS THERE
DEKHA KARIB JA KE THO, PARCHAIENYA MILI
WHEN I LOOKED CLOSELY, ALL I SAW WAS DARK SHADOWS

POOCHA JO MEINE DIL KE TABAHI KA MAAJRA
WHEN I ASKED HER, THE REASON FOR BREAKING MY HEART
HAS KAR JAVAB MEIN MUJHE ANGAD-AINYA MILI
SHE JUST SIGHED AND STRETCHED HER SELF LANGEROUSLY

NASIR DIL-E-TABAH , NA UNKO DIKHA SAKA
OH NASIR, YOU COULD NOT SHOW THE RUINS OF YOUR HEART
MILNE KO BARAHAN USE TANHAIYA MILI
HOWEVER, ALL SHE GOT ALSO WAS LONELINESS

GHAZAL:GAZAB KIYAA TERE VAADE PE AITBAAR KIYA:

MEHNDI HASSAN:

POET: DAAG DEHLVI:

(24) GAZAB KIYAA TERE VAADE PE AITBAAR KIYA:

Gazab kiyaa, tere vaade pe aitabaar kiyaa
What a blunder it was to believe in your promises
Tamaam raat qayaamat kaa intezaar kiyaa
The entire night I waited for this disaster

Hansaa hansaa ke shab-e-vasl ashk-baar kiyaa
After all the laughter, you filled out night of union with tears
Tasalliyaan mujhe de-de ke beqaraar kiyaa
After falsely consoling and comforting me you made me restless

Ham aise mahv-e-nazaaraa na the jo hosh aataa
I was so immersed in your love, I was uncogniscent of any deceit
Magar tumhaare taGaaful ne hoshiyaar kiyaa
But it was your indifference that made me aware of your deceit

Fasaana-e-shab-e-Gam un ko ek kahaanii thhii
My tale of sadness of that night was but a story for you
Kuchh aitabaar kiyaa aur kuchh naa-aitabaar kiyaa
Like a fictional story, you believe in some and disbelieve in others

Ye kisane jalvaa hamaare sar-e-mazaar kiyaa
Who has graced the head of my tomb with their presence
Ki dil se shor uThaa, haa_e! beqaraar kiyaa
My heart has cried out with pain, even in my grave you have made me restless

Tarap phir ai dil-e-naadaan, ki Gair kahate hain
The world is asking me again, to feel the pain, oh my innocent heart
Aakhir kuchh na banii, sabr ikhtiyaar kiyaa
When nothing worked then I took the path of patience

Bhulaa bhulaa ke jataayaa hai unako raaz-e-nihaan
In trying to forget, I have finally exposed the secret buried deep in my heart
Chhipaa chhipaa ke mohabbat ko aashakaar kiyaa
After ages of hiding I have finally revealed my love for you

Tumhen to vaadaa-e-diidaar ham se karanaa thaa
I thought I was special when I made a promise to make an appearance
Ye kyaa kiyaa ke jahaan ko ummiidavaar kiyaa
What have you done? now the whole world expects to see me

Ye dil ko taab kahaa.N hai ke ho maalandesh
Did this heart has the strength to doubt you and think of the consequences
Unhone vaadaa kiyaa ham ne aitabaar kiyaa
You promised and I believed you

Na puuchh dil kii haqiiqat magar ye kahate hain
Don't ask the reality of this heart, but they say
Vo beqaraar rahe jisane beqaraar kiyaa
The one who made you restless, will ramain uneasy themselves

Kuchh aage daavar-e-mahashar se hai ummiid mujhe
The only expectation I have is from God
Kuchh aap ne mere kahane kaa aitabaar kiyaa
But you did believe a bit on me

GHAZAL: NAQSH E KHAYAAL DIL SE MITAAYA NAHIN HANOZ:

MEHNDI HASSAN:

POET: JOSH MAILHABADI:

(25) NAQSH E KHAYAAL DIL SE MIITAYAA NAHIIN HANOZ:

Naqsh-e-Khayaal dil se mitaayaa nahiin hanoz
The thought of you has not been removed from my heart as yet
Bedard main ne tujhako bhulaayaa nahiin hanoz
Ohh heartless beloved, I have not forgotten you as yet

Vo sar jo terii raahaguzar mein thaa sajdaa-rez
The head that was bowed in front of you in devotion
Main ne kisii qadam pe jhukaayaa nahiiin hanoz
I have not bowed this head in front of anyone as yet

Maharaab-e-jaan mein tuu ne jalaayaa thaa Khud jise
The lamp of love that you lit in the depth of my heart
Siine kaa vo chiraag bujhaayaa nahiin hanoz
That lamp, I have not extinguished as yet

Behosh hoke jald tujhe hosh aa gayaa
You are finally coming out of the unconsciousness of love
Main badanasiib hosh mein aayaa nahiiin hanoz
I, the unfortunate have not recovered from this malady as yet

Mar kar bhii aayegii ye sadaa qabr-e-"Josh" se
Even after my death, Josh will call out to you from his grave
Medard mainn ne tujhako bhulaayaa nahiin hanoz
Ohh heartless beloved I have not forgotten you as yet

DEDICATION:

GHAZAL:MUJHAY TUM NAZAR SAY:

MEHNDI HASSAN:

POET:MASROOR RANA:

His performances of Ghazals inscribes in listeners mind that sense of humanity that is exclusively of its own. Therefore, he holds a singular place in our hearts. The song below had evoked tears even from the strongest of Lovers:

(16) MUJHAY TUM NAZAR SAY::

Mujhe tum nazar say gira tou rahe ho
I know that I am falling, in your estimation
(My worth is going down in your eyes)
Mujhe tum kabhi bhi bhula na sakoge
You will never be able to forget me
Na jaanaye mujhe kyoun yaqeen ho chala hai
I dont know why I firmly believe that
Meray pyaar ko tum mitta na sakoge
You will not be able to anhilate my love (for you)

Mujhe tum nazar say
I know that my worth is falling

Meri yaad hogi jidhar jaoge tum
My memories will follow you whereever you go
Kabhi naghma bun kay kabhi bun kay aanso
Sometimes in forms of tears and sometime as songs
Tarapta mujhe har taruf paoge tum
Where ever you look you will find me pining for you
Shamma jo jalaee hai meri wafa naye
My devotion/love is like a lighted candle
Bhujana bhi chahoo bhuja na sakoge
Even if you wish to extinguish this candle you will not succeed

Mujhe tum nazar say
I know that my worth is falling

Kabhi naam baatoun main aya jo mera
When my name comes up in your chit-chat
Tou baychain ho ho kay dil thaam loge
You will become restless and try to calm your heart
Nighaoun main chayega ghum ka andhera
You will be blinded by Darkness of Sorrows
Kissi ne jo poocha sabub aansoun ka
When someone wants to enquire about the tears you are shedding
Batana bhi chaaho bata na sakoge
Even if you want to confide, you would not be able to

Mujhe tum nazar say gira tou rahe ho
I know that I am falling, in your estimation
My worth is going down in your eyes

Mujhe tum kabhi bhi bhula na sakoge
You will never be able to forget me

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

Birth: 1940
Birthplace: Kaleke , Pakistan
Profession: Playback Singer, Bollywood.

Ghulam Ali, the singing sensation has enthralled audiences all over the world for almost four decades now.His "Chupke Chupke Raat Din Aasoon Bahana Yaad Hai...." whose words still haunt. And the man behind that voice still stays as elusive as he ever was.His background as a Thumri singer makes him an exceptional ghazal singer. Ghulam Ali can easily be termed as the most versatile ghazal singer ever.

Ghulam Ali was born in 1940, at village Kaleke, district Sialkot, which is now a part of Pakistan in 1940 . He belongs to a musical family, his father was vocalist and sarangi player Ghulam Ali got his initial musical training from his father. His father would teach him by keeping small green leaves over the harmonium keys and marking them with a ballpoint pen.

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

Ghulam Ali encountered Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan , an unparalleled legend of classical music fro the first time , when he was a 15-year-old boy. Ustad Khan had come to Kabul. Ghulam Ali's father requested the Ustad to take his son as a disciple. But the maestro insisted that since he was hardly in town, regular training wouldn't be possible. But after repeated requests from Ghulam Ali's father, Khan Saheb asked the young Ghulam Ali to sing something. It wasn't easy to sing before him. He mustered the courage to sing the thumri, Saiyyan Bolo Tanik Mose Rahiyo Na Jaye... After he finished, Ustad Saheb hugged him and made him his disciple.

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

Bade Ghulam Ali Khan had three brothers, Barqat Ali Khan, Mubarak Ali Khan and Amanat Ali Khan, all of whom were renowned classical musicians. The young Ghulam Ali was placed under their supervision as they lived in Lahore. It was under Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan that he learnt to recognise ragas and other basics. With time, his inclination towards ghazal, thumri, dadra grew, and he decided to take them up professionally. All these great teachers of classical music taught him finer details of classical music, making him one of the best classical singers of all times. And his solid foundation in pure classical music, raagas, thumaris is very apparent in all his singing, making is style unique and inimitable.

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

For the singer, 1960 was a turning point in his career. That year, he attended the biggest-ever musical event in Pakistan called Kul Pakistan Music Conference, in which maestros from across the world participated. Personalities such as Gopi Krishna and Girija Devi had come from India. He got to sing for 12 minutes, a rare chance for someone who was relatively unknown. He was the youngest there. As he sang, the demand for more poured in. The next day,he hit the headlines of the most prestigious newspaper of Lahore called Imroz. The rest, as they say, is history.

Also he came under the association of a master poet whom he has called Sufi Sahab. He guided Ghulam Ali to enter into the realm of the heart and aesthetics of ghazals. Sufi Sahab taught him how to recite the shers effectively without distorting the beauty of the poetry. He told him where to stop and where to stress so that the words remained crystal clear.

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

The hallmark of Ghulam Ali's style is his mastery over Classical Music and perfect understanding of the ghazal. He fuses them perfectly to bring this complex amalgam within the easy reach of all. The result -- timeless compositions like Hungama kyon hai barpa,Dil mein ek lahar si uthi hai abhi, Mehfil mein baar baar usi par nazar gayeen, Kal Chaudavin ki raat thi, to name only a few. His incomparable rendition of the ghazals through his pioneering style, coupled with his impeccable voice, carries even the most disinterested listener to a height where sheer ecstasy reigns supreme.

Ghulam Ali has a heavy, baritone voice, and while rendering ghazals he creates very subtle vibrations in his voice which he uses very beautifully, to convey a whole range of emotions through it. He could make it sound hopelessly romantic, he can make it sound melancholy, he can make it sound anything that he wants almost effortlessly.

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

It's his classical style of singing combined with soul and emotion of the ghazal without compromising clarity of reciting the words makes Ghulam Ali so unique. Many music critics and experts unanimously agree that Ghulam Alis compositions are very tough, and it's next to impossible to imitate them.

Ghulam Ali is equally sensitive about the rhythm and technical virtuosity of the ghazals. He recites each word very clearly, making sure that the meaning of the ghazal is conveyed effectively. He can make 15 plus minute long ghazal sound equally beautiful as Mehdi Hassan.Along with Mehdi Hassan, he has played a pioneering role in reviving the Ghazal in the 1970's. He can deservedly be called one of the most influential amabassadors from across the border, who, when he sang Faasle aise bhi honge, yeh kabhi socha na tha brought ghazal from both the countries closer to one another. Listeners are always left breathtaken and spellbound as Ghulam Ali unlocks the eternity of emotions that run through his exquisite rendering of the ghazal.

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

POET: MIRZA GHALIB

AAH KO CHAAHIYE IK UMR ASAR HONE TAK:

(Aah ko chaahiye ik umr asar hone tak)2
It will take a lifetime for my sadness to have an effect on you
Kaun jiitaa hai terii zulf ke sar hone tak
Who is going to live long enough (for you) to understand my sad condition

(Aashiqii sabrtalab aur tamannaa betaab)2
Love asks for patience, but the desires are impatient
(Dil kaa kyaa rang karuun Khuune jigar hone tak)2
Tell me which color should I color this heart, while
waiting for you to break it

(Aah ko chaahiye ik umr asar hone tak)2
It will take a lifetime for my sadness to have an effect on you

(Ham ne maanaa ke tagaaful na karoge lekin)2
I understand that you are not indifferent to my feelings of love
Khaak ho jaayenge ham tumako Khabar hone tak
But I will turn into ashes (die) by the time you get a wind of my feelings

(Aah ko chaahiye ik umr asar hone tak)2
It will take a lifetime for my sadness to have an effect on you

(Partav-e-Khuur se hai shabanam ko fanaa kii taaliim)
The dew drop is finished or destroyed by the sunlight
(Main bhii huun ek inaayat kii nazar hone tak)2
I'm living until you look at me just like the dew is until the sunrays falls on it.

(Gamehastii kaa 'Asad' kis se ho juz marg ilaaj)2
Asad, the sorrows of my life, can be cured by none other than death
(Shamm'a har rang men jalatii hai sahar hone tak)2
After all the candles burns under all circumstances till the dawn

Aah ko chaahiye ik umr asar hone tak
It will take a lifetime for my sadness to have an effect on you
Kaun jiitaa hai terii zulf ke sar hone tak
Who is going to live long enough (for you) to understand my sad condition

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

His Inimitable Style

Ghulam Ali has a heavy, baritone voice, and while rendering ghazals he creates an effect which is simply out of this world. He has a very subtle vibrations in his voice which he uses very beautifully, to convey a whole range of emotions through it. He could make it sound hopelessly romantic, he can make it sound melancholy, he can make it sound anything that he wants almost effortlessly owing to his relentless riyaaz (practice).

Ghulam Ali is equally sensitive about the rhythm and technical virtuosity of the ghazals. He recites each word very clearly, making sure that the meaning of the ghazal is conveyed effectively. He could recite same sher (couplet) five times making it sound different each time and conveying a new meaning each time with his amazing flair. It's sheer bliss to listen to his ghazal which has only a few shers but goes on for about 15-20 minutes enjoying his voice modulations. Recall his rendering of "Tez hawaaaaaaa ne muzse puchha, ret pe kya likhate rahete ho..." from "Itni muddat baad mile ho" ghazal, you'll know what I mean. IMHO, the only other person who can make 15 plus minute long ghazal sound equally beautiful is Mehdi Hassan.

It's his classical style of singing combined with soul & emotion of the ghazal without compromising clarity of reciting the words makes Ghulam Ali so unique. Many music critics and experts unanimously agree that Ghulam Ali's compositions are very tough, and it's next to impossible to imitate them.

For his live concerts, usually the accompanying musical instruments are harmonium and tabla. He himself plays these instruments quite well. The musical instruments such as sarod, sitar, santoor often complement him, but it is his voice which rules, and not the instruments.

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

Popularity, Inspirations ...

Despite of his classical based ghazals, he is very popular among critics as well as music lovers giving him rare adulation in various countries besides his own. Due to this very reason many music labels such as HMV Saregama, Music India, Polydor, Venus, Tips, T-Series, Navras Sony across the globe have produced numerous compilations of his ghazals. That is the reason why I have not mentioned any particular album for most of his ghazals in the site database, instead it mentions "Various" in the album column.

Again, owing to his immense popularity, some of his ghazals have been used in the Indian hindi movies. His popular ghazal "Chupke chupke raat din.." has been used in the movie Nikaah featuring Raj Babbar and Salma Aghaa. Moreover, many of the hindi film songs have been "inspired" from some of his ghazals. "Thodi si jo pi li hain, chori to nahi ki hain" from Namak Halal (Ghazal - Hungama hain kyon barpa) as you would recognize, is one them.

It is indeed surprising why there's not much information available about him and his songs on the internet. As far as I know, he doesn't have a fan site yet like jagjitsingh.com, the search on google for his name usually gives links of sites like teenstation.com or musicindiaonline.com which features some of his songs in ra and mp3 format. Anyway, I hope this micro-site grows into a decent information site about Ghulam Ali.

New Releases

(June 2007) Times Music has released an album of new ghazals (as of June 2007) called Zikr sung by Ghulam Ali. I rushed to Planet M to get my copy, and was eager to listen to the maestro himself with all new ghazals!!! Though it hurts like hell to say this - this album is rather mediocre. The music by Nayab Raja is too ordinary & lyrics are just about average! Worse still, Ghulam Ali's voice doesn't sound too good either!!! Nothing hurts more...I hope we'd get a chance to hear something better by him soon!

Earlier, in Sept 2001, he had released an album Visaal with famous Indian poet Gulzar. This indeed is a great news because some of his latest albums did lack good poetry to match his earlier classics, I hope he makes more albums with great poets like Gulzar. Unfortunately this album is not available in India these days (June 2007) and I hope SaReGama will do something about it.

Also, he sang live at Swar Utsav, which was conducted during 23 - 25 November 2001 at India Gate, New Delhi. A recording of this live concert has been made available on cassettes and CDs by Music Today.

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

Ghulam Ali In An Exclusive Interview:

Sanjeeb Mukherjee

Recently in Delhi for the release of his latest album Visaal (Coming Together) penned by another maestro Gulzar, the singer spoke at length about his love for Urdu poetry, the cultural bonding that artists like him have managed to create between two estranged nations and also on his latest album and how he roped in one the most sensitive poets India has ever produced....

Ghulam Ali, the singing sensation has enthralled audiences all over the world for almost four decades now.

His "Chupke Chupke Raat Din Aasoon Bahana Yaad Hai...." The words still haunt. And the man behind that voice still stays as elusive as he ever was.

How does it feel to have an appreciative audience like you had today?

GA: Everywhere in the world I am heard with love and affection. But I personally enjoy singing in India. Though some people may not understand some of the chaste Urdu words but they know most of my popular ghazals verbatim. It's a great feeling. Singing for an Indian audience is a unique experience. They are true connoisseurs. As far as audience in England, America and Canada go, they have to be explained the meanings of certain words.

What about your fans in Pakistan?

GA: As you know Urdu is our zabaan. So in Pakistan things are entirely different. No one has to make an effort to understand the words of my ghazals. There I believe people say that if you haven't heard Ghulam Ali you've heard nothing. I may sound pompous but the fact is that in Pakistan they only listen to me when they want to enjoy a good ghazal.

In these strained times how do you think an artiste like you can help better relationships between India and Pakistan?

GA. Music transcends all geographical boundaries. I have admirers on both sides of the borders, for whom I am neither Hindustani nor Pakistani, but simply a singer. For me personally it is a great honour that through my songs I have managed to bring the people of both countries closer and I will continue to do so.

Just like you there are many pop groups from Pakistan who have tremendous fan following on both sides of the border. Tell us something about the role that they are playing and also about there singing?

GA. As far as fan following is considered it is good that pop groups too have been trying to cement ties between the two countries. But, frankly I am really bewildered at their style of singing. How can you sing a song by running and jumping around the stage? The stage is meant for performing not for acrobatics.

Do you feel ghazal is more superior to other forms of singing?

GA. Ghazal requires lot of riyaz and training and a thorough knowledge of classical music. Nobody, wants to spend so much time nowadays, every one is after quick bucks.

Which is your favourite forum?

GA: There's no question about it. Singing on stage is a sublime experience because you get an instant reaction. When the audience appreciates you they reward you right there with their applause. Can there be anything more satisfying for a creative person?

You've been singing for almost 40 years. Has there been any change in your style since then?

GA: Yes it's been 40 years or say all the years of my adulthood. The difference is that my voice has matured and I have learnt a lot. I've sung in front of different audiences around the world and feel far more confident than I did in my early days. In short I feel that I have matured considerably. I've become more God-fearing and feel that my talent is God's grace. Now when I sing well I feel I am communing with God.

As a great ghazal singer you follow the conventional style - you don't like to experiment much?

GA: You see, experimenting with ghazal means experimenting with words and music. If you have been following my style, I keep innovating. For me ghazal is very serious matter, singing each ghazal is a new experiment.

Tell us something about your latest album Visaal and why did you choose the poetry of Gulzar?

GA. Visaal, means coming together. We chose this name because it signifies not only the coming together of two personalities, but is the union of two minds, two souls, two cultures and more importantly of two great nations.

We had conceptualized this album for quite sometime, but due to our respective prior engagements we could not give it a final shape. Now with the grace of the Almighty it has finally materialized.

What is the underlying mood in the album?

GA. We have focused on the ghazal form of singing and selected those shers (couplets) that suit the ghazal style of singing. As far as the underlying mood is concerned it is a combination of all human emotions like joy, sorrow and romance. All the music that I've composed for this album has a classical base.

Back in the eighties you had some big hits in Hindi films. Haven't any Indian producers approached you for giving music in Hindi films?

GA: Insha Allah, I have been approached and I am considering a few proposals. It is God's grace that I compose my own music. I've hundreds of books, I select a ghazal then I sit down for the composition. At times it takes two days, at times eight days and at times even fifteen days, but I don't compromise on that.

Would you like to sing along with any Indian singer?

GA: I want to provided someone accepts the offer. I like most Indian singers and I hope they like me.

Do you have any favourites among Indian singers?

GA: Maasha Allah, whom shall I name, all of them are so good. I can say without any doubt that there is no match to Lataji, Ashaji and Jagjit Singhji. Hariharan is also singing well. Anoop Jalota has his own style. Indian singers are dear to me.

You have been performing in India since 1980. Has it been a pleasant experience?

GA: As I said, in India I've had some of the most appreciative audiences. I keep coming to India because of the affection I get from the people here.

You are now promoting your son Nazar Abbas Ali. Can you tell us a bit about him?

GA: Insha Allah, let us pray the love and affection I've got from you will be showered on him as well. But so far he is still under my tutelage. Let him mature as a singer then we'll plan things out.

Does he sing on stage?

GA: Yes. he sometimes accompanies me. He has sung in America, England and Canada. In fact he had also come to India some time back as well. I pray to God he does well for himself.

Do you have other disciples apart from your son?

GA: There are lot many and in different countries. Some of them are in India too. Here I've Naeem Ali, Javed Ali. I think many of my disciples have a lot of promise in them. Mohan Jutle in America and Ameen Mukhtar in Canada are doing very well and are getting recognition.

You've been the disciple of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Saheb. Did your father name you after him?

GA: What can a humble singer like me say about Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Saheb. I had been, I have been and I will be his disciple. I am proud I have been named after him. Whosoever keeps a bit of his remembrance will always remain alive to melody. Whatever little remembrance of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Saheb I have, I revere that.

Any message for you fans?

GA: Yes. I love you all and always want your love and affection

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

Ghulam Ali recites each word clearly, making sure that the meaning of the ghazal is conveyed effectively. He has the ability to recite the same sher five times making it sound different each time.
Some of his ghazals have been used in the Bollywood movies. His popular ghazal, Chupke chupke raat din, has been used in the movie, Nikaah. Many of the Hindi film songs have been inspired from some of his ghazals like, Thodi si jo pi li hain, chori to nahi ki hain from Namak Halal which was inspired by his ghazal, Hungama hain kyon barpa. As Ghulam Ali believes in quality than quantity he produces just one or two albums a year and rest of the time concentrates more on live concerts. In September 2001, he released an album, Visaal, with famous Indian poet Gulzar.

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

Despite of his classical based ghazals, he is very popular among critics as well as music lovers giving him rare adulation in various countries besides his own. Due to this very reason many music labels such as HMV Saregama, Music India, Polydor, Venus, Tips, T-Series, Navras Sony across the globe have produced numerous compilations of his ghazals.

Ghulam Ali produces only a few albums a year , concentrating more on his live concerts. For his live concerts, usually the accompanying musical instruments are harmonium and tabla. The musical instruments such as sarod, sitar, santoor often complement him, but it is his voice which rules, and not the instruments.

They all can be regarded as doctors of their trade and their therapy can be so relaxing and like you said soooooo soothing.

Listeners are always left breathtaken and spellbound as Ghulam Ali unlocks the eternity of emotions that run through his exquisite style of ghazal rendering.

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

POET: MIRZA GHALIB

1) AAH KO CHAAHIYE IK UMR ASAR HONE TAK:

(Aah ko chaahiye ik umr asar hone tak)2
It will take a lifetime for my sadness to have an effect on you
Kaun jiitaa hai terii zulf ke sar hone tak
Who is going to live long enough (for you) to understand my sad condition
Aah ko chaahiye......................
It will take a lifetime for my sadness to have an effect on you

(Aashiqii sabrtalab aur tamannaa betaab)2
Love asks for patience, but the desires are impatient
(Dil kaa kyaa rang karuun Khuune jigar hone tak)2
Tell me which color should I color this heart, while
waiting for you to break it

Aah ko chaahiye ik umr asar hone tak, aah ko chaahiye
It will take a lifetime for my sadness to have an effect on you

(Ham ne maanaa ke tagaaful na karoge lekin)2
I understand that you are not indifferent to my feelings of love
(Khaak ho jaayenge ham tumako Khabar hone tak)2
But I will turn into ashes (die) by the time you get a wind of my feelings

Aah ko chaahiye ik umr asar hone tak, aah ko chaahiye
It will take a lifetime for my sadness to have an effect on you

(Partav-e-Khuur se hai shabanam ko fanaa kii taaliim)2
The dew drop is finished or destroyed by the sunlight
(Main bhii huun ek inaayat kii nazar hone tak)2
I'm living until you look at me just like the dew is until the sunrays falls on it.

(Gamehastii kaa 'Asad' kis se ho juz marg ilaaj)2
Asad, the sorrows of my life, can be cured by none other than death
(Shamm'a har rang men jalatii hai sahar hone tak)2
After all the candles burns under all circumstances till the dawn

Aah ko chaahiye ik umr asar hone tak,
It will take a lifetime for my sadness to have an effect on you
Kaun jiitaa hai terii zulf ke sar hone tak
Who is going to live long enough (for you) to understand my sad condition
Aah ko chaahiye

Your eyes went through my heart, all the way to my soul
Donon ko ik ada mein razaamand kar gayi
With just one gesture they brought down both
Dil se teri nigaah jigar tak utar gay
Your eyes went through my heart, all the way to my soul

Woh bada-e-shabaana ki sar-mastiaan kahaan
Where is the intoxication of the wine I drank all day?
Uthathe bas ab, ke lazzat-e-khwaab-e-sahar gayee
I shall get up now, the ecstasy of the early morning dream has passed

Dil se teri nigaah jigar tak utar gayee
Your eyes went through my heart, all the way to my soul

(Dekho to dil-farebi-e-andaaz-e-naqsh-e-pa)2
Look how decieving my lover's walk can be
Mouj-e- kiraam-e-yaar bhi kya gul-katar gayi
The waves made by her gait have laid the garden to waste

Dil se teri nigaah jigar tak utar gay
Your eyes went through my heart, all the way to my soul

(Nazzaara ne bhi kaam kiya waan naqaab ka)2
See what the sight of your unveiling has done
Masti se har nigaah tere ruk par bikhar gayi
Every intoxicated glance came to rest on your face and withered away

Dil se teri nigaah jigar tak utar gay
Your eyes went through my heart, all the way to my soul

(Maara zamaane ne ' asadullaah khaan' tumhein)2
Asad (Ghalib's given name), Time has defeated you
Wo walawale kahaan wo jawaani kidhar gayi
Where is that fervour, where is your youth?

Donon ko ik ada mein razaamand kar gayi
With just one gesture they brought down both
Dil se teri nigaah jigar tak utar gay
Your eyes went through my heart, all the way to my soul

GHAZALS:

Hasrat Mohani's Ghazal "Chupke, chupke raat din ansoon bahan yaad hein...." was written on a terrace in *Ballimaraan by a youthful Mohani who had fallen in love with a girl living in the next house. She would often come to the terrace on the pretext of drying clothes.

*Balimaraan (the walled city of Delhi more than 150 years ago where one of the greatest masters of Urdu Poetry, Mirza Ghalib once lived.)

hello ASJ

Mirza Ghalib was also a master or Persian (Farsi), and has written many poems in Farsi, and uses many words of Farsi origin in his Urdu ghazals.

He could be considered a master of Farsi poetry of his time as well. But his work in Urdu excelled then, and excels now. Although he chose the name "Ghalib" for himself (it means the best), I don't begrudge him the title, vanity aside. He is the best.

Hi Venkat, everyone wants to be like a Ghalib (In Guyanese lingo we say say that he is a "soor man" that is he could at anytime charm the ladies with his words) The Best...and a Master of his trade in comparison to the best of the English Poets, he is way ahead.

(3) CHUPAKE CHUPAKE RAAT DIN AANSUU BAHANAA YAAD HAI

Chupake Chupake Raat Din Aansuu Bahanaa Yaad Hai
I remember shedding tears secretly day and night
Ham ko ab tak aashiqii kaa vo zamaanaa yaad hai
I still remember the days of our love

Chupake Chupake Raat Din Aansuu Bahanaa Yaad Hai
I remember shedding tears secretly day and night

(Tujhse Milte Hi Woh Kuchh Bebaak Ho Jaana Mera)2
As soon as I meet you, I would become bold
Aur Tera Daaton Mein Woh Ungali Dabana Yaad Hai
and you would press your finger between your teeth, I remember

Ham ko ab tak aashiqii kaa vo zamaanaa yaad hai
I still remember the days of our love
Chupake Chupake Raat Din Aansuu Bahanaa Yaad Hai
I remember shedding tears secretly day and night

(Khench lenaa vo meraa parde kaa konaa daffaatan)2
I would suddenly tug at the corner of the screen
Aur dupatte se teraa vo muunh chhupaanaa yaad hai
and you would hide youe face with your dupatta

Ham ko ab tak aashiqii kaa vo zamaanaa yaad hai
I still remember the days of our love
Chupake Chupake Raat Din Aansuu Bahanaa Yaad Hai
I remember shedding tears secretly day and night

(Do-pahar kii dhuup mein mere bulaane ke liye)2
In the heat of the midday sun, to call me,
Vo teraa kothe pe nange paaoon aanaa yaad hai
I remember you would come into the yard in your bare feet

Hum Ko Ab Tak Ashiqui Ka Woh Zamana Yaad Hai
I still remember the days of our love
Chupake Chupake Raat Din Aansuu Bahanaa Yaad Hai
I remember shedding tears secretly day and night

(Tujh ko jab tanhaa kabhii paanaa to az_raahe-lihaaz)2
when I got to meet you alone, I would blushingly...
(hal-e-dil baaton hii baaton mein jataanaa yaad hai)2
... find a way to mention the state of my heart

Hum Ko Ab Tak Ashiqui Ka Woh Zamana Yaad Hai
I still remember the days of our love
Chupake Chupake Raat Din Aansuu Bahanaa Yaad Hai
I remember shedding tears secretly day and night

(Aa gaya gar vasl kii shab bhii kahiin zikr-e-firaaq)2
If a mention of parting ever came up during our nights of love
Vo teraa ro ro ke bhii mujhako rulaanaa yaad hai
I remember how you would cry and make me cry

Hum Ko Ab Tak Ashiqui Ka Woh Zamana Yaad Hai
I still remember the days of our love
Chupake Chupake Raat Din Aansuu Bahanaa Yaad Hai
I remember shedding tears secretly day and night

Trans: Venkat:

OTHER VERSES THAT MAKE UP THE COMPLETE POEM OF "CHUPAKE CHUPAKE RAAT DIN" NEVER HAD TRANSLATIONS BEFORE, SOMETIMES THESE VERSES WERE SUNG BY VARIOUS SINGERS, OF COURSE NOT ALL AT ONE SITTING

Be rukhi kay saat sunanaa dard-e-dil ki daastaan
With your face averted, you would listen to the tales of my heartache
Wo kalaai me teran kangan ghumaana yaad hai
I remember how you would twirl your bangles around your wrist

Ham ko ab tak aashiqii kaa vo zamaanaa yaad hai
Chupake chupake raat din aansuu bahanaa yaad hai

Waqt-e-rukhsat alvida ka lafz kehnay ke liyay
When it was time to say goodbye
Vo tere sukhay labo ka Thar-tharana yaad hain
I remember how your parched lips would quiver

Ham ko ab tak aashiqii kaa vo zamaanaa yaad hai
Chupake chupake raat din aansuu bahanaa yaad hai

Baahazaaraan iztiraab-o-sad-hazaaraan ishtiyaaq
with a thousand anxieties, and a hundred thousand desires
Tujhase vo pahale pahal dil kaa lagaanaa yaad hai
I remember how I first lost my heart to you

Ham ko ab tak aashiqii kaa vo zamaanaa yaad hai
Chupake chupake raat din aansuu bahanaa yaad hai

Jaan kar sotaa tujhe vo qasa-e-paabosii meraa
I would knowingly rub your feet in worship
Aur teraa Thukaraa ke sar vo muskuraanaa yaad hai
I remember how you would toss your head and smile at me

Ham ko ab tak aashiqii kaa vo zamaanaa yaad hai
Chupake chupake raat din aansuu bahanaa yaad hai

Jab sivaa mere tumhaaraa koii diivaanaa na thaa
when you had no other suitor but me,
Sach kaho kyaa tum ko bhii vo kaarKhaanaa yaad hai
Tell me truly, do you remember such a time?

Ham ko ab tak aashiqii kaa vo zamaanaa yaad hai
Chupake chupake raat din aansuu bahanaa yaad hai

Ghair kii nazaron se bachakar sab kii marzii ke Khilaaf
Hiding from other's eyes, and against their wishes
Vo teraa chorii chhipe raaton ko aanaa yaad hai
I remember you would secretly come to me at night

Ham ko ab tak aashiqii kaa vo zamaanaa yaad hai
Chupake chupake raat din aansuu bahanaa yaad hai

Dekhanaa mujhako jo bargashtaa to sau sau naaz se
when you saw me turned against you, with much gentleness....
Jab manaa lenaa to phir khud ruuth jaanaa yaad hai
you would cajole me, then you yourself would become cool toward me

Ham ko ab tak aashiqii kaa vo zamaanaa yaad hai
Chupake chupake raat din aansuu bahanaa yaad hai

Chori chori ham se tum aa kar mile the jis jagah
That place where where I came to meet you secretly
Muddatein guzariin par ab tak wo thikaanaa yaad hai
I remember it still, though many years have passed

Ham ko ab tak aashiqii kaa vo zamaanaa yaad hai
Chupake chupake raat din aansuu bahanaa yaad hai

(4) HUM KO KIS KAY GAM NAY MARA

Dil ki choton nay kabhi chain say rehnay na diya,
The wounds in my heart never let me have any peace
Jab chali sard waha mainay tujhay yaad kiya,
Whenever a cold wind blew, I kept thinking of you

Iska rona nahin kyon tumnay kiya dil barbaad,
I am not crying because you broke my heart
Iska gham hai ki bahut dher may barbaad kiya
I cry because it took you so long to break it

Humko kiskay gham nay maara, yeh kahaani phir sahi,
Whatever sorrow took my life, let us not talk about it now
Kisnay tora dil hamara, yeh kahaani phir sahi
Who was it that broke my heart, let us not talk about it now

Dil kay lutnay ka sabab poocho na sabkay saamnay,
Don't ask me in front of everyone why my heart was broken
Naam aayega tumhara, yeh kahaani phir sahi
Your name might come up, better to discuss this later

Humko kiskay gham nay maara, yeh kahaani phir sahi,
Whatever sorrow took my life, let us not talk about it now
Kisnay tora dil hamara, yeh kahaani phir sahi
Who was it that broke my heart, let us not talk about it now

Nafraton kay teer kha kar doston kay shehar mein,
Stung by arrows of hate in a city of my friends
Humnay kis kis ko pukara, yeh kahaani phir sahi
Whose names did I call in pain, better to discuss this later

Humko kiskay gham nay maara, yeh kahaani phir sahi,
Whatever sorrow took my life, let us not talk about it now
Kisnay tora dil hamara, yeh kahaani phir sahi
Who was it that broke my heart, let us not talk about it now

Kya batayein pyaar ki baazi wafa ki rah mein,
What can I say, in the game of love on the streets of devotion
Kaun jeeta kaun haara, yeh kahaani phir sahi
Who won, who lost? better to discuss this later

Humko kiskay gham nay maara, yeh kahaani phir sahi,
Whatever sorrow took my life, let us not talk about it now
Kisnay tora dil hamara, yeh kahaani phir sahi
Who was it that broke my heart, let us not talk about it now

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

One cannot compare Ghulam Ali's renditions, (especially in concert singing,) with other ghazal singers, his flair for letting go of the harmonium at times with that flashing smile of his, and hand gestures, and if we were to discuss his impeccable voice, which takes the listener to a height where sheer ecstasy reins supreme. At the end of it all they just keep asking for more.
Such is a performance of the maestro Ghulam Ali.

(5) HUM TERE SHEHR MAY AYE HAIN

Ham tere shahar mein aaye hain musaafir kii tarah
I have arrived in your town as a traveller
(In Urdu poetry, "coming to your town" is used often as a metaphor for "coming to you")

Ham tere shahar mein aaye hain musaafir kii tarah
I have arrived in your town as a traveller
Sirf ek baar mulaaqaat kaa mauqaa de de
Give me just once chance to meet you

Ham tere shahar mein aaye hain musaafir kii tarah
I have arrived in your town as a traveller

(Merii manzil hai kahaan meraa thikaanaa hai kahaan)2
Where am I going? Where am I now?
Subah tak tujh se bichharakar mujhe jaanaa hai kahaan
Where shall I go when I leave you in the morning?
Sochane ke liye ek raat kaa mauqaa de de
Give me a chance to think about it all night

(Ham tere shahar mein aaye hain musaafir kii tarah)2
I have arrived in your town as a traveller

(Apanii aakkhoon mein chhupaa rakhein hain juganuu main ne)2
I have concealed the twinkles in my eyes
Apanii palakoon pe sajaa rakhe hain aansuu main ne
I have adorned my eyelids with my tears
Merii aankhoon ko bhii barasaat kaa mauqaa de de
Give my eyes a chance to rain

(Ham tere shahar mein aaye hain musaafir kii tarah)2
I have arrived in your town as a traveller

(Aaj kii raat meraa dard-e-muhabbat sun le)2
Tonight, listen to the pain in my heart
Kanp-kanppaate huye honthoon kii shikaayat sun le
Listen to the laments of my quivering lips
Aaj izhaar-e-Khayaalaat kaa mauqaa de de
Give me a chance to express my feelings

(Ham tere shahar mein aaye hain musaafir kii tarah)2
I have arrived in your town as a traveller

(Bhuulanaa thaa to ye iqaraar kiyaa hii kyuun thaa )2
If you had to forget me, why did you accept me at first?
Bevafaa tuune mujhe pyaar kiyaa hii kyuun thaa
My unfaithful one! why did you ever love me?
Sirf do-chaar savaalaat kaa mauqaa de de
Give me a chance for just a couple of questions

(Ham tere shahar mein aaye hain musaafir kii tarah)2
I have arrived in your town as a traveller

(6) DIL MAY EK LEHER SAY UTHEE HAI ABHEE

(Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi)2
A ripple has risen in my heart,
(Koi taaza havaa chali hai abhi)2
A new kind of breeze is blowing

Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi
A ripple has risen in my heart,

(Shor barpaa hai khana-e-dil mein)2
I hear a tumultous roar in my heart
(Koi deewaar si girii hai abhi)2
As if some wall has fallen just now

(Koi taaza havaa chali hai abhi)2
A new kind of breeze is blowing
Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi
A ripple has risen in my heart,

(Kuch to naazuk mizaaj hai hum bhi)2
I have a delicate disposition, too
(Aur ye chot bhi nayee hai abhi)2
And this wound is still fresh

(Koi taaza havaa chali hai abhi)2
A new kind of breeze is blowing
Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi
A ripple has risen in my heart,

(Yaad ki be-nishan jazeeron se)2
From the uncharted islands of my memory,
(Teri aawaaz aa rahi hai abhi)2
I now hear your voice rising forth

(Koi taaza havaa chali hai abhi)2
A new kind of breeze is blowing
Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi
A ripple has risen in my heart,

(Shahar ki be-chiraagh galiyon mein)3
In the darkened streets of the city,
(Zindagi tujh ko dhoondati hai abhi)2
My soul searches for you

(Koi taaza havaa chali hai abhi)2
A new kind of breeze is blowing
Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi
A ripple has risen in my heart,

Venkat

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

Dil Mein Ek Laher Se
Album : Best Of Ghulam Ali

This one is coming directly from the heart of Ustad Ghulam Ali, it is soooo soothing, almost mesmerizing, so appropriate for when one is in love and there are so many obstacles and problems, getting in the way........trying to soak yourself into the music and the magical twist in words and variation leaves one in awe. It is like a magician weaving his magic and you are forced to observe and listen attentively to the fantastic pronunciation of the flowing Urdu in musical notes that keeps chugging at the heart.

Venkat I know see why you have this one as your favorite......it is truly a beauty and a gem.

(7) YEH DIL YEH PAAGAL DIL MERA

(BaDe busook se, duniya fareb deti hain)2
With great craftiness, the world deceives us
BaDe khuloos se hum eitbaar karte hain
With great naivete, we go on trusting

(Yeh dil, yeh paagal dil mera, kyon bhuj gaya, aawaragi)2
This heart, this crazy heart of mine, why did it die? of loneliness!
(Iss dasht mein, ek shahar tha)2, woh kyaa hua, aawaragi
In this desert stood a town, what happened to it? Loneliness!
Yeh dil, yeh paagal dil mera, kyon bhuj gaya, aawaragi
This heart, this crazy heart of mine, why did it die? of loneliness!

(Kal shab mujhe, be-shakl ki aawaz ne chaunka diya)2
Last night a faceless voice startled me
(Main ne kaha,"tu kaun hai?")2, uss ne kaha, aawaragi
I said, "who are you?" it replied, "Loneliness!"

Loneliness!
Yeh dil, yeh paagal dil mera

(Ek tuu ke sadiyon se mere humraah bhi, humraaz bhi)2
There you are, for centuries, my fellow and confidant
(Ek main ke tere naam se,)3 aaya shana, aawaragi
Here I am, I had not even heard of you, Loneliness!

Yeh dil, yeh paagal dil mera, kyon bhuj gaya, aawaragi
This heart, this crazy heart of mine, why did it die? of loneliness!
(Iss dasht mein, ek shahar tha)2, woh kyaa hua, aawaragi
In this desert stood a town, what happened to it? Loneliness!
Yeh dil, yeh paagal dil mera

(Yeh dard kii tanhaayian)2 yeh dasht ka viiran safar,
The loneliness of the pain, the arid crossing of the desert,
(hum log to ukta gayay,)2 apni sunaa, aawaragi
We have grown weary, tell us about yourself, Loneliness!

(Ek ajnabee jhaunke ne jab, poochha mere gham ka sabab,)2
An unfamiliar gust of wind asked me the reason for my sorrow
(Sehraa ki bhiigi reyt par)2, main ne likha, aawaragi
On the wet sands of the desert I wrote, Loneliness!

(Le, ab to dasht-e-shab ki saarii usratein sone lagii)3
Look, now all the troubles of the desert night have gone to sleep,
(ab jaagana hoga hamay,)2 kab tak bataa, aawaragi
Tell me. please. how much longer must I stay awake? Loneliness!

(Kal raat tanhaa chaand ko, dekhaa tha main ne khwaab mein)3
Last night, alone, I saw the moon in my reverie
(Mohsin mujhe, raas aayegi,)2 shayad sadaa, aawaragi
Perhaps it will suit me well forever, this Loneliness!

Yeh dil, yeh paagal dil mera, kyon bhuj gaya, aawaragi
This heart, this crazy heart of mine, why did it die? of loneliness!
(Iss dasht meN, ek shahar tha)2 woh kyaa hua, aawaragi
In this desert stood a town, what happened to it? Loneliness!
Yeh dil, yeh paagal dil mera, kyon bhuj gaya, (Aawaragi!)3
This heart, this crazy heart of mine, why did it die? of loneliness!

Yeh dil, yeh paagal dil mera,
ALBUM: LIFE STORY

Quote:
In Urdu, "aawaragi" has many meanings - immorality, dissoluteness, irresponsibility, wantonness, etc. But the meaning (not commonly taken) of loneliness, the painful loneliness of a person that does not want to conform, a free spirit, who has been dismissed by the world as a madman, probably best fits the thoughts in this ghazal. His once-spirited heart has withered away by the rejection, the light has gone out. He vows that he cannot live in a world where non-conformity is a sin, and discovers that his only true companion is his loneliness. How beautiful!" end quote.

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

Ghulam Ali-Yeh Dil Ye Pagal Ye dil Mera

ye dil ye paagal dil meraa kyo.n bujha gayaa aavaaragii
is dasht me.n ik shahar thaa vo kyaa huaa aavaaragii ...

The poet is asking why is the heart so subdued, where is its glitter, its shine?the meaning of saying ,in the heart there was a city,is simply that it was full of people,it loved but now has become desolate.ie.the heart is totally forlorn and like a desert, dead

What makes Ghulam Ali's compositions special is his perfect understanding of the poetry, the soul of a ghazal. Fusing this with his mastery of classical music he has been able to bring this complex amalgam to the easy reach of all. "I have sung poems of so many great poets right from Mirza Ghalib, to Aamir Khusro, Ahmad Fayaz, Qateel Shifai, Fahat Shahzad, Gulzar, Akbar Allahabadi... There are so many others whose names don't come to mind. I have always remained faithful to the poems, never trying to change them. I was taught to enter the heart and aesthetics of ghazals. To recite the shers effectively, without distorting the beauty of the poetry. In fact, these changes are usual in film songs."

AARTI CHABRIA: BEAUTY IS ALWAYS A JOY TO BEHOLD:

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

SINGER: GHULAM ALI

POET : AKBAR ALLAHBADI

(8) HANGAMA HAI KYON BARPA

Andaaz apne dekhte hain, ayeene may woh
They look at themselves in the mirror,
Aur ye bhi dekhte hain koyee dekhta na ho
And make sure no one else is watching

Hangaamaa hai kyuun barpaa tho.Dii sii jo pii lii hai
Why such a furore, after all, I just had a little sip
Daakaa to nahiin Daalaa chorii to nahiin kii hai
I did not rob anyone, nor steal anything

Us mai se nahiin matalab dil jis se ho begaanaa
I speak not of the wine that intoxicates the mind
Maqsuud hai us mai se dil hii mein jo khichatii hai
I mean the kind that tugs at your heart

Hangaamaa hai kyuun barpaa tho.Dii sii jo pii lii hai
Why such a furore, after all, I just had a little sip
Daakaa to nahiin Daalaa chorii to nahiin kii hai
I did not rob anyone, nor steal anything

Main teri mast nigahon ka bharam rakh loongaa
I will keep the image of your intoxicating looks
Hosh ayaa bhi tu keh doonga mujhay hosh nahin
Even if I become conscious, I will say that I am still unconscious

Hangaamaa hai kyuun barpaa tho.Dii sii jo pii lii hai
Why such a furore, after all, I just had a little sip
Daakaa to nahiin Daalaa chorii to nahiin kii hai
I did not rob anyone, nor steal anything

Suuraj mein lage dhabbaa fitarat ke karishme hain
There is a shadow on the face of the Sun, it is a marvel of nature
But ham ko kahe kaafir allaah kii marzii hai
The idols call me an infidel, this is the wish of Allah

Hangaamaa hai kyuun barpaa tho.Dii sii jo pii lii hai
Why such a furore, after all, I just had a little sip
Daakaa to nahiin Daalaa chorii to nahiin kii hai
I did not rob anyone, nor steal anything

VERSES IN THE POEM, BUT NOT SUNG BY GHULAM ALI
IN THIS RECORDING:

Naa-tajurbaakaarii se vaa_iz kii ye baatein hain
The sermonizers speak from a lack of experience
Is rang ko kyaa jaane puuchho to kabhii pii hai
How can they know this feeling? ask if they have ever had a drink

Vaan dil mein ke sadame do yaan jii mein ke sab sah lo
They are inclined to deliver blows, and my nature is to bear all
Un kaa bhii ajab dil hai meraa bhii ajab jii hai
They have strange hearts, and my mind is equally strange

Har zarraa chamakataa hai anavaar-e-ilaahii se
Every particle of our being sparkles with the splendour of the Almighty
Har saans ye kahatii hai, ham hain to Khudaa bhii hai
Every breath says, if we are, then God is

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

VENKAT'S OBSERVATION ON GHULAM ALI'S HANGAAMA:

Quote "I have heard a few other singers do this ghazal, and all the lines you have listed seem to be the only ones coming up. It is very common for singers to pick different verses from the original every time they sing a ghazal, It shows off their knowledge of the poem, but also helps to give a fresh feel to their singing. Ghulam Ali must have sung this one hundreds of times in concerts, and it is a ˜gift' from the singer to the audience when he delivers a new verse or a new style to the ghazal.

In this version, Ghulam Ali has chosen to elaborate on the Raag Darbari in which this ghazal was composed. He has added the verse that annoyed you (and me) for this purpose. I do not believe that Ilahabadi wrote the couplet that Ghulam added here. It is just a change of pace from the melody, a different colour in the same Raag to embellish the performance." End Quote.

N.B As was also explained that particular sheyr was the opening salvo of his video recording that we listed above:

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

8) HANGAMA HAI KYON BARPA

Ye alag baat hai saaqi ke mujhe hosh nahin
varana main kuchh bhi huun ehasaan-faraamosh nahin

main teri mast-nigaahi ka bharam rakh luunga
hosh aaya bhi to kah duunga mujhe hosh nahin

Hungama hai kyu barpa thodi si jo pi li hai
daaka to nahin daala chori to nahin ki hai

us may se nahin matalab dil jisase ho begaana
makasuud hai us may se dil hi mein jo khinchati hai

suuraj mein lage dhabba fitarat ke karishme hain
but hamako kahein kaafir allaah ki marzi hai

naatajurbaakaari se vaayiz ki ye baatein hain
is rang ko kya jaane puuchho jo kabhi pi hai

waan dil mein ki sadamein do, yaan ji mein ki sab sah lo
unaka bhi ajab dil hai, mera bhi ajab ji hai

har zarra chamakata hai anawaar-e-ilaahi se
har saans ye kahati hai ham hain to kuda bhi hai

e shauq wahi may pi ai hosh zara so ja
mehamaan-e-nazar is dam ik bark-e-tazali hai

Opening sheyr for this rendition

Ye alag baat hai saaqi ke mujhe hosh nahin
varana main kuchh bhi huun ehasaan-faraamosh nahin
main teri mast-nigaahi ka bharam rakh luunga
hosh aaya bhi to kah duunga mujhe hosh nahin

and

Opening Sheyr on other rendition:
Andaaz apne dekhte hain, ayeene may woh
Aur ye bhi dekhte hain koyee dekhta na ho

This might very well all the verses there is, but one never knows:

We are certain that we know of six verses that Akbar Allahabadi have written as Venkat have pointed out, the others might simply have been added on in later years as is with some Poems.

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

VENKAT'S OBSERVATION ON AKBAR ILAHABADI

QUOTE:
"Akbar Ilahabadi (Allahabadi) (1846-1921) was a great satirical poet who lent a new spark to this genre of Urdu poetry in India. Well-educated through home schooling and self-study, he went on to become a lawyer, then progressing to the position of District Judge of Banares in 1898. His poetry, which he took up seriously in his later years, spared neither the British nor his compatriots in its masterful satire. In this poem, sung by many as a song that seems to legitimize drinking, the poet has his tongue firmly in his cheek as he takes a stab at self-appointed moral guardians. Many verses are actually of a mystic nature, singing the praise of God in a Sufi tradition." END QUOTE.

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

AKBAR ILAHABADI

Akbar is the pioneer in the field of humour and sarcasm; before him there were only serious poets who ocassionly had one or two ash'ar of that kind in their ghazals. For Akbar humour was not only a style but an instrument to clearly understand the social change. He conveys his message in his own original style without losing the humorous feel. Like Iqbal he was also a poet of the mind, they both used their poetry to awaken the sleeping masses, but there is a sharp contrast in their styles. Underneath the wave of humour, we find the poet's pain - pain that this society is changing for the worst, pain that Muslims are forgetting their true values.

takeed-e-ibaadat pay yeh sab kahte hain larhke
peeri mein bhi AKBAR ki zarafat nahin jaati
[takeed-e-ibaadat = to remind for prayers, peeri= old age]

Akbar had great understanding and control of the Urdu language. He used simple language with very effective use. He also used English words in his poetry with interesting results, which was also to make fun of the Hindustanis who pretend to be British; a subculture that had thrived in the era of Akbar.

IN MOVING FROM "HANGAMA" I GUESS IT WILL BE A TRAVESTY NOT TO LISTEN TO THIS RENDITION FROM THE VIDEO:

Amanat Ali - Hungama Hai Kyun Bharpa - SRGMP Challenge 2007

Difficult ghazal to sing, a good performance, still no where near the Ustad.

SHRIYA SARAN: BEAUTY IS ALWAYS A JOY TO BEHOLD:

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:

SINGER: GHULAM ALI

POET : DAAG DELHVI

(9) TUMHARE KHAT MEIN NAAYA EK SALAAM

(Tumhaare Khat mein nayaa ik salaam kis kaa thaa)2
There was a new greeting in your letter, who was it for?
Na thaa raqiib to aaKhir vo naam kis kaa thaa
If it was not my rival, whose name was it?
(Tumhaare Khat mein nayaa ik salaam kis kaa thaa)2
There was a new greeting in your letter, who was it for?

(Rahaa na dil mein vo be-dard aur dard rahaa)2
The merciless one left my heart, but the ache remained
(Muqiim kaun huaa hai maqaam kis kaa thaa)2
Who took up residence, and whose place was it?

(Tumhaare Khat mein nayaa ik salaam kis kaa thaa)2
There was a new greeting in your letter, who was it for?
Na thaa raqiib to aaKhir vo naam kis kaa thaa
If it was not my rival, whose name was it?

(Vafaa karenge nibhaayenge baat maanenge)2
I will remain faithful, keep my word, do as you wish,
(Tumhein bhii yaad hai kuchh ye kalaam kis kaa thaa)2
You must remember, whose song was this?

(Tumhaare Khat mein nayaa ik salaam kis kaa thaa)2
There was a new greeting in your letter, who was it for?
Na thaa raqiib to aaKhir vo naam kis kaa thaa
If it was not my rival, whose name was it?

(Guzar gayaa vo zamaanaa kahoon to kis se kahoon)2
Those days have gone by, who will listen to me?
(Khayaal dil ko mere subah-o-shaam kis kaa thaa)
My thoughts day and night, of whom were they?

OTHER VERSES IN THE POEM NOT SUNG BY GHULAM ALI
IN THE RECORDING PROVIDED:

Vo qatl kar ke har kisii se puuchhate hain
She took my life, and asks everyone,
Ye kaam kis ne kiyaa hai ye kaam kis kaa thaa
Who did this, whose work was it?

Na puuchh-taachh thi kisii kii na aav-bhagat
No one asked questions, there was no warm welcome (when I came)
Tumhaari bazm mein kal ehatamaam kis kaa thaa
But who was it that got so much caring in your company yesterday?

Hamaare Khat ke to purze kiye pa.Dhaa bhii nahiin
You tore my letter to pieces, did not even read it,
suna jo tum ne baa-dil vo payaam kis kaa thaa
But you listened with all your heart, whose message was that?

Inhiin sifa'at se hotaa hai aadamii mashahuur
It is through such qualities that one achieves fame
Jo lutf aap hi karate to naam kis kaa thaa
If she is doing the favours, who is taking the credit?

Har ek se kahate hain kyaa "Daag" bevafaa nikalaa
She says to everyone, "see how unfaithful Daag turned out"
Ye puuchhe in se ko_ii vo Gulaam kis kaa thaa
Somebody please ask her, whose slave was he?

THE POET : DAAGH DELHVI

Daagh's real name was Nawab Mirza Khan. He was born in Delhi. Daagh lost his father, Nawab Shamsuddin Khan when he was just seven years old. Consequently, his mother remarried the heir apparent of the Mughal Empire, Shahzada Fateh-ul-Mulk alias Mirza Fakhru, the son of the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar. Thus, Daagh was brought up in the royal environ of the Red Fort that was the symbolic seat of the illustrious power. He was also fortunate enough to acquire a princely education. The emperor, Zafar and Daagh's stepfather, Mirza Fakhru, were poets themselves and were the pupils of the poet laureate Sheikh Ibrahim Zauq. Such a literary surrounding drove Daagh towards poetry and he became the youngest disciple of Zauq. In a short time he mastered the shades and technicalities of ghazal writing and began participating in the royal mushairas (poetry readings) in his early teens.

THE POET : DAAGH DELHVI

Daag started reciting poetry at the age of ten. His forte was the ghazal. His poetry does not wallow in despair. The tone of his poems is exuberant. He was a self-acknowledged romantic but contrary to the impression one gets from his poetry, he eschewed wine. He had innumerable disciples. Usage of common words and phrases was distinctive of his style. His work comprises of four volumes consisting of 16,000 couplets.

Daag Dehlvi passed away in 1905.

2) DIL SE TERE NIGAH

(Dil se teri nigaah jigar tak utar gayi)2

11) HUMNE HASRATON KE DAAG

(Hamne hasraton ke daag aansuon se dho liye)2
I washed away the scars of my pain with my tears
Aapki khushi huzuur boliye na boliye
Please yourself, speak to me, or don't
(Hamne hasraton ke daag aansuon se dho liye)2
I washed away the scars of my pain with my tears

(Kya haseen khaar the jo meri nigaah ne)2
How beautiful those thorns were ....
(Saadagi se baaraha rooh mein chubho liye)2
that repeatedly pierced my soul with such ease

Aapki khushi huzuur boliye na boliye
Please yourself, speak to me, or don't
Hamne hasraton ke daag aansuon se dho liye
I washed away the scars of my pain with my tears

(Mausam-e-bahaar hai ambareen khumaar hai)2
It is springtime, a hazy hangover looms
(Kiska intazaar hai)2 gesuon ko kholiye
Whom do you await? Let your hair down

Aapki khushi huzuur boliye na boliye
Please yourself, speak to me, or don't
Hamne hasraton ke daag aansuon se dho liye
I washed away the scars of my pain with my tears

(Zindagi ka raasta kaatana to tha ' Adam')2
Life has to be lived somehow, 'Adam'
(Jaag uthe to chal diye thak gaye to so liye)2
When I awoke, I kept going; when I was tired, I slept

Aapki khushi huzuur boliye na boliye
Please yourself, speak to me, or don't
(Hamne hasraton ke daag aansuon se dho liye)2
I washed away the scars of my pain with my tears

Totally agreed, how can we ever repay or say "Thank You" Ranjana and Venkat for giving us (including myself) an insight into the Romance of Urdu.
