TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

IN 1941 CAME THE SMASH HIT '' TASVEER TERI DIL MERA BEHLA NA SAKEGI ''. I'TS POPULARITY WAS SO PHENOMENAL AND UNRIVALLED THAT EVEN TODAY IT REMAINS ONE OF THE TOP SELLING NON-FILM DISCS. THIS DISC BROUGHT TALAT FAME THROUGHOUT INDIA

Singer: Talat Mahmood
Lyric : Faiaz Hashmi
Music : Kamal Dasgupta

1) TASVEER TERI DIL MERA BEHLA NA SAKEGI: MP3:

1) TASVEER TERI DIL MERA BEHLA NA SAKEGI:

Tasviir terii dil meraa bahalaa na sakegii
Your photo cannot please my heart
Ye terii tarah mujh se to sharmaa na sakegii
This can never become shy in front of me like you

Main baat karuungaa to ye khaamosh rahegii
If I speak to it, it would remain silent
Siine se lagaa luu.Ngaa to ye kuchh na kahegii
It will say nothing when I clasp it to my breast
Aaraam vo kyaa degii jo taDapaa na sakegii
How can it give me solace when it cannot make me suffer

Ye aankhein hain Taharii huiin, chanchal vo nigaahein
These eyes are still, and those looks are playful
Ye haath hain sahame huye aur mast vo baahein
These hands are hesitant, and those arms are intoxicating
Parachhaa_ii to insaan ke kaam aa na sakegii
A mere image can be of no use to a real person

In honthon ko fayyaaz main kuchh de na sakuungaa
I will not be able to give anything of value to these lips
Is zulf ko main haath mein bhii le na sakuungaa
I will not be able to take these tresses in my hands
Ulajhii hu_ii raatoon ko ye sulajhaa na sakegii
It cannot calm my troubled nights

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

POET: MIRZA GHALIB

DIL E NADAAN TUJHAY HUWA KYA HAI

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?
Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai
After all, what is the remedy for this pain?

TALAT MAHMOOD THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Baradari (1955) (Talat Mahmood)

Movie : Baradari 1955
Singer: Talat Mahmood
Lyric : Khumar Barabankvi
Music : Naushad

2) TASVEER BANATA HOON MP: 3:

2) TASVEER BANATA HOON

Tasveer banata hoon, tasveer nahiin banatii
I am drawing your picture, but it does not work
Ek khwaab saa dekhaa hai, taabiir nahiin banatii
The dream I saw, it refuses to become reality

Bedard mohabbat kaa itanaa saa hain afasaanaa
The story of this cruel love is not long
Nazaron se milii nazare, main ho gaya diiwaanaa
Your eyes met mine, and I went crazy
Ab dil ke bahalane kii, tadbiir nahiin banatii
Now there appears to be no way to appease my heart

Dam bhar ke liye merii duniyaan mein chale aao
Come into my world for just a moment
Tarasii huyii aakhon ko phir shakl dikhaa jaao
Show your face once more to my longing eyes
Mujh se to merii bigadii takadiir nahiin banatii
I cannot fix my broken fortune on my own

Tarana : (1951)
Singers:Talat & Lata
Lyric : Prem Dhawan
Music : Anil Biswas

3) SEENE MEIN SULAGTE HAIN ARMAAN: MP 3:

3) SEENE MEIN SULAGTE HAIN ARMAAN

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan aankho mein udaasi chhaayi hai
Desires kindle in the heart sorrow is entrenched in my eyes
Ye aaj teri duniya se hamein Taqdeer kaha le aayi hai
Today from your world where has fate brought me

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart

Kuchh aankh mein aansoo baaki hain (Jo mere gham ke saathi hain) 2
Some tears in the eyes are still left the friends of my grief
(Ab dil hain na dil ke armaan hain)2 Bas main hu meri tanhaai hai
There is the heart but no desire of the heart just me and my lonliness

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart

Na tujhse gila koyi hamko na koyi shikaayat duniya se
I don’t have to blame you no complaints to the world
(Do chaar kadam jab manzil thi)2 Qismat ne thhokar khaayi hai
When the destination was four steps away fate has pushed me

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart

Ek aisi aag lagi man mein jeene bhi na de marne bhi na de
Some type of fire was lit in my heart it won’t let me live, it won’t let me die
(Chup hu to kaleja jalta hai)2 Bolu to teri ruswaayi hai
If I am silent, my chest burns if I talk, then it will be your disgrace

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart

Trans:Madhuri Dixit

N.B. Ab dil hain na dil ke armaan hain
now there is no heart, and no hopes, just me and my loneliness

(Do chaar kadam jab manzil thi)2 Qismat ne thhokar khaayi hai
with the end just a few steps away, my fate has suffered a blow

Madhuri, is thankful for your observation V.

4) DIL-E-NADAAN TUJHAY HUWA KYA HAI: MP 3:

4) DIL-E-NADAAN TUJHAY HUWA KYA HAI:

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?
Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai
After all, what is the remedy for this pain?

(Hum hain mushtaaq aur woh beyzaar,)2
We are impatient, and he is disgusted
Ya-Ilaahi yeh maajra kya hai
Oh ! God, what is the matter out here

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?

(Main bhi muh mein zabaan rakhtaa hoon)2
I too have a tongue in my mouth
Kaash pooche ke mudda’aa kya hai
If only I was asked about my view

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?

(Ham ko unse wafaa ki hai ummeed)
I have hopes of faithfulness from her,
Jo nahi jaante wafa kya hai
Who knows not what faithfulness is

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?

(jan tum par nisar karta hun)2
I would give my life for you
main nahi janta dua kya hai
But I don't know how to verbally offer prayer for you

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?
Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai
After all, what is the remedy for this pain?

****************************************************

jab k tujh bin nahi koi maujud
When there is no one besides you here(in this world)
phir ye hangama, ai Khuda kya hai
Then Oh God! Whati is all this commotion?

ye pari chehra log kaise hain
What are these beautiful angelic faced people like?
gamaza-o-ishwa-o-ada kya hai
What are all the airs and graces about?

shikan-e-zulf-e-ambari kyon hai
Why is this scented coiled curl created?(Hair?)
nigah-e-chashm-e-surma sa kya hai
What is the meaning of the glance of the eyes lined with kohl?

sabza-o-gul kahan se aye hain
Where from have this beautiful flora and greenery originated?
abr kya chiz hai hawa kya hai
What is this cloud and the wind?

Haan, bhala kar, tera bhala hoga
Yes, do good, and good will come to you
Aur darvesh ki sada kya hai
What but this does the mendicant say?

Maine mana ke kuch nahin “Ghalib”
I admit that it is nothing, “Ghalib”
Muft haath aaye to bura kya hai
What is bad if it comes to hand gratis?

Trans Ranjana

Mirza Ghalib, in his ghazal “Dil e nadaan” has spoken of love, justice, human values, mysticism etc., each in a different couplet. Couplets in a ghazal are like gems of a beautiful necklace the luster of which is timeless.

I was drawn to Urdu at a young age for much the same reasons. I did not have a lot of nostalgia at 14, but I found in it a power of expression that English lacked. The infinite ways in which Urdu poets create metaphors reflect the rich cultural experience of not only Islam but of many aspects of life in India. I think this is why many ghazals and songs live on forever in our minds. Unlike English pop music, the Hindi songs of 50 years ago still sound fresh and ageless. It is because of the richness of meaning and original turns of phrase that are the specialties of Urdu poets. It gives me great pleasure to explore the meanings and share what I find with my friends at GNI. I am not very good, and I am sure I am only skimming the surface of the meanings, but I am happy to what I can.

I am glad to hear that you enjoy it.

NUTAN – THESE EYES ARE SHINING, INDEED

(5) JALTE HAIN JISKE LIYE: MP 3:

Jalte hain jis ke liye teri aakhon ke diye,
for which the lamps of your eyes are shining
dhoond laya hoon wahi geet main tere liye,
I have found that song, just for you
Jalte hain jis ke liye
for which they shine

dil main rakh lena ise haathon se ye chhute na kahin,
keep it in your heart, let it never slip from your hands
geet nazuk hai mera sheeshe se bhi toote na kahin, (2)
my song is more delicate than glass, let it not break
gungunaunga yehi geet main tere liye,
I shall keep crooning this song for you
Jalte hain jis ke liye
for which they shine

jab talak na yeh tere ras ke bhare honton se mile,
Until it meets with your succulent lips
yun hi awara phirega yeh teri zulfon ke tale, (2)
it will wander about under your lovely tresses
gaye jaunga yehi geet main tere liye,
and I shall keep singing this song, just for you
Jalte hain jis ke liye
for which they shine

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

His diction and intonation were word perfect. his expressive style and emotional nuances were unparalleled, the mellowness, sweetness and pathos in his voice set him apart from all the other singers. Music directors relish that natural vibration in Talat Saab voice. But those who really understood that intensity, utilized it so beautifully - to bring out romance/anguish of the ghazals.

Madan Mohan was one such brilliant composers. Salil Chaudhary is probably another.

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Mohd. Rafi, the film industry's most versatile singer and Talat Mahmood, the undisputed monarch who ruled the world of ghazals !

One of the songs that Talat Saab did was "Chal Udja Re Panchi" recorded for the the film Bhabi
For some reasons or the other the same song was done by Mohd Rafi and Rafi got the nod and his version was selected for Bhabi.
Talat Saab's version was just as well as good as Rafi's.

This song per se is not a Ghazal, but we will present this because of its Popularity:

CHAL UDJA RE PANCHI: MP 3:

Chal Ud Ja Re Panchhi Ke Ab Yeh Desh Hua Begaana
Go, fly away bird, now that this world has become a stranger

Khatam Hue Din Us Daali Ke Jis Par Tera Basera Tha
Gone are the days of that branch on which you were perched
Aaj Yahan Aur Kal Wahan Yeh Jogi Wala Phera Tha
Today here and somewhere else tomorrow, roaming like a wanderer
Ye tere jaagir nahin thi char ghari ka dhera tha
This was not your place, just a stop for a short while
Sadaa Raha Hai Is Duniya Mein Kiska Aab-O-Dana
Who, in this world, has lived forever
Chal Ud Ja Re Panchhi ...
fly away bird...

Toone Tinka Tinka Chunkar Nagri Ek Basaai
You have collected bit by bit straws and made your nest
Baarish Mein Terii Bheegi Aankhen Dhoop Men Garmi Khai
In rain your eyes have got wet and suffered the heat of sun
Gham Na Kar Jo Terii Mehnat Koi Kaam Na Aayi
do not grief if your laborious task is not fruitful
Achha Hai Kuchh Le Jaane Se Dekar Hi Kuchh Jaana
It is better to give than to take something away
Chal Ud Ja Re Panchhi ...
Go bird, fly away...

Bhool Ja Ab Voh Mast Hava, Voh Udna Daali Daali
Forget now those intoxicating breezes, those flutters from branch to branch
Jag Ki Aankh Ka Kaanta Ban Gayi Chaal Teri Matwali
Your strut has become a thorn in the eyes of the world
Kaun Bhala Us Baag Ko Poochhe, Ho Na Jiska Maali
Who will ask for that garden that has no gardener
Teri Kismat Mein Likha Hai Jeete Ji Mar Jaana
Your fate has been written to live a lifeless life

Chal Ud Ja Re Panchhi Ke Ab Yeh Desh Hua Begaana
Go, fly away bird, now that this world has become a stranger

Rote Hain Woh Pankh Pakheru Saath Tere Jo Khele
In tears are those birds who once played with you
Jinke Saath Lagaye Toone Armaanon Ke Mele
with whom you shared so many dreams
Bheegi Ankhiyon Se Hi Unki Aaj Duaen Le Le
with whom you shared so many dreams
Kisko Pata Ab Is Nagri Mein Kab Ho Tera Aana
Who knows now when you will return to this city
Chal Ud Ja Re Panchhi ...
Go bird, fly away....

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

TALAT MAHMOOD - Andhe jahan ke andhe raaste PATITA

HOW CAN WE FEATURE TALAT, AND LEAVE OUT THIS GEM:?

andhe jahaan ke andhe raasate, jaaye to jaaye kahaa
duniyaa to duniyaa, too bhee paraayaa, hum yahaa naa wahaa

jeene kee chaahat nahee, mar ke bhee raat nahee
is paar aansoo, us paar aahe, dil meraa bejoobaan
andhe jahaan ke andhe raasate, jaaye to jaaye kahaa

hum ko naa koee bulaaye, naa koee palake bichhaye
aye gam ke maaro manjil wahee hai, dam ye toote jahaa
andhe jahaan ke andhe raasate, jaaye to jaaye kahaa

aagaaj ke din teraa, anjaam tay ho chookaa
jalate rahe hai, jalate rahenge, ye jameen aasamaan
andhe jahaan ke andhe raasate, jaaye to jaaye kahaa

The bird here refers to the soul.

Sadaa Raha Hai Is Duniya Mein Kiska Aab-O-Dana
Who, in this world, has lived forever

fly away bird...

Just as the bird move form tree to tree freely, so does man in the world. We are reminded that we are destined to live here only for a few days.

Achha Hai Kuchh Le Jaane Se Dekar Hi Kuchh Jaana
It is better to give than to take something away
Chal Ud Ja Re Panchhi ...
Go bird, fly away...

Just as the bird builds its nest so too man built his home. Likewise he struggled for his family but in the end he has to leave family and wealth.. but in leaving everthing behind, he now goes forward to that which is alloted for him.

Those birds who played with you are your friends and realatives. They cherished your dreams with you. Who knows when you take birth again in which home and which city.

We (Guyanese) mostly do this song at funerals. There are so many strong messages about realization. I have give a brief commentary as shown in red. Mitwah.

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Film : Patita
Singer: Talat Mahmood
Lyrics: Shailendra
Music : S.D.Burman

HAIN SABSE MADHUR WO GEET JINHEN

Hain sabase madhur wo geet jinhen,
Ham dard ke sur men gaate hain,
Ham dard ke sur men gaate hain;
Jab had se guzar jaati hai khushi,
Aansoo bhi chhalak te aate hain,
Aansoo bhi chhalak te aate hain;

Hain sab se madhur wo geet

(Pahaloo men paraaye dard basa ke,
Hasana hasaana sikh zara,
Tu hasana hasaana sikh zara)2
Toofaan se kah de ghir ke uthe,
Ham pyaar ke deep jalaate hain,
Ham pyaar ke deep jalaate hain;

Hain sab se madhur wo geet

(Kaanton men khile hain phool hamaare,
Rang bhare aramaanon ke,
Rang bhare aramaanon ke)2
Naadaan hain jo in kaanton se,
Daaman ko bachaaye jaate hain,
Daaman ko bachaaye jaate hain;

Hain sab se madhur wo geet

(Jab gham ka andhera ghir aaye,
Samajho ke savera doornahin,
Samajho ke savera door nahin)2
Har raat ka hai paigham yahi,
Taare bhi yehi Doharaate hain,
Taare bhi yehi doharaate hain

Hain sab se madhur wo geet

Another one that is not a ghazal per se, but was very popular in its heyday

Bahenji RQ, it is very rare, imagine these singers were so young, even if you try to pick them out (apart from Rafi) it will be very hard, as they were so young at the time.
