As a teenager, I had a big crush on him. Feroze Khan: man who brought style to Hindi cinema leaves the world in style -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network FIROZ KHAN Whenever the history of style in India would be written, in all such chronicles name of Feroz Khan would be a shinning beacon in all such compilations. He was a man who single-handedly was able to bring style into every frame that he directed and though the films may or may not have been a success at the box office, the element of style associated with his films is what kept Feroze Khan in vogue. It was evident from the last film in which he acted WELCOME, where he literally towered over everyone else who was there in the frame. It was his association with the style probably, which must have encouraged the producer and director of WELCOME to give him a saxophone and become a part of a song. He was the star, who right from the time when he made his debut on the silver screen was able to carve out a specialist niche of his own, and his niche was further accentuated when he started producing and directing the films himself. Feroz Khan broke in the main league with the stupendous success of AARZOO, and from then on in most of the films that he enacted in his screen name was Rajesh. His sojourn with style began with DHARMATMA which was his first film as a producer and director and it marked arrival of an actor on the firmament of Hindi cinema who had style written all over his products. It was in his quest for style that he went and shot DHARMATMA in Afghanistan, the first film to be shot, and presented Hema Malini in a new light. Another significant feature of his films was music, and his keen sense of music was in its manifestation from DHARMATMA itself. "Kya Khoob lagti ho, the all time great song of love, where the mouth organ catches its nodes against the vibrations of wind could only have been an imagination from the heart of Feroze Khan. No wonder, it was used repeatedly in DHARMATMA. In his quest to provide lilting music Feroz Khan was the first director who dared to travel, introduced to the Indian cinema the choice of world music as it was evolving with his epic film QURBANI that had many firsts to its credit. It was the second major film after SHOLAY, which transformed the image of Amjad Khan and gave to Hindi cinema the voice of Nazia Hassan and the music of Biddu. While most of us would be aware of this contribution made by Feroz Khan to the world of cinema very few would be aware that it was in QURBANI to add authenticity to the film Feroz Khan had broken a brand new Mercedes car and not a scrap one. Nobody could dare to do it during those days, but Feroz Khan had the audacity to do it. It was also through QURBANI that Vinod Khanna got a new lease of life in his career, and what oomph and glamour Zeenat Aman had, was once again reemphasized. Feroze Khan followed this with DAYAVAAN, which again became a film worth its name for the sheer fact that it was the first and last film where Madhuri Dixit had kissed on screen. YALGAAR followed DAYAVAAN and through it Feroz Khan introduced the hip-hop music of clubs of London to the Indian audience and he brought Channi Singh to the world of Hindi cinema. His acme of stylization was in JAANBAAZ and in JAANASHEEN. Dimple Kapadia never looked as sultry and sexy as she did in this film, nor did Anil Kapoor appear as stylish. He was a man who created new frontiers in film making be it through locations, or music or through characterizations. It was only his faith in his ability that he could literally shoot a whole film in a stud farm, JAANBAAZ, and never let element of boredom creep through the choice of location. It would be difficult to fill the void left by him, as he was ready to play the third innings of his career. May be, there was a need for stylist in God's court, and Feroz Khan has made a grand entry there after spending his last moments in the farm house that he created for himself in Bangalore. But as long as style and Hindi cinema would be a subject of study his name would be taken with reverence. http://www.glamsham.com/movies...ma-leaves-040910.asp |

'Bollywood's Clint Eastwood' Feroz Khan dies
5 hours ago MUMBAI (AFP) — Bollywood actor and director Feroz Khan, once dubbed "the Clint Eastwood of the East" because of his maverick roles and manly swagger, died on Monday after a long fight against cancer, his publicist said. He was 69. "Feroz Khan passed away post-midnight at the Feroz Khan ranch in (the southern city of) Bangalore," the publicist said. Khan was diagnosed with cancer last year and was being treated at a private hospital in Mumbai but discharged himself earlier this month. His family was at his bedside when he died, she added. The actor was born to a father with Afghan roots and a mother of Iranian origin and brought up in Bangalore. He found fame in "Oonche Log" (High Society) and in the saccharine-sweet musical "Arzoo" (Wish), both in 1965. Khan was known to push boundaries. As a producer and director, he made "Dharmatma", the first Hindi-language movie made on location in Afghanistan and inspired by the Oscar-winning Hollywood epic "The Godfather". But it was with the 1980 Hindi/Urdu gangster film "Qurbani" (Sacrifice) that he scored his biggest hit as an actor, producer and director, introducing foreign locations to Bollywood that are now the norm. He repeated his success with films like "Janbaaz" (Braveheart) starring a young Anil Kapoor, who later went on to feature in the Oscar-winning film "Slumdog Millionaire", and "Dayavaan" (Kindhearted) in the 1980s. In a 2003 profile, news and information website rediff.com said of the actor: "Khan did not walk, he swaggered... He left his shirt unbuttoned to reveal a brawny chest and sported tight-fitting trousers. "A cigarette dangled from his lips, a femme fatale hung on his arm and a horse waited for his bidding. He spoke with an American twang. The Clint Eastwood of the East seems to have come via Texas, not Bangalore." One of Khan's two children, Fardeen, followed him into Bollywood but has yet to make as big an impact as his father. http://www.google.com/hostedne...9KEvK0Ofwh_RsoaDoRUQ |

He died at his farmhouse in the southern Indian city of Bangalore on Monday and was buried in a Muslim ceremony, Khan said. For the next five years he was forced to play the second to last lead in most of the movies. Through the early 1960- 1970s he made low-budget porn-movies opposite starlets. He also appeared in an English-language film titled Tarzan Goes to India in 1962 opposite Simi Garewal. His first big hit was in 1965 with the release of Oonche Log. It was his first major hit, but failed to attain the success he had hoped. Again, in the same year, he played a sacrificing lover in the mushy musical Arzoo. With this, Khan earned his entry into A-list second leads. With the film Aadmi Aur Insaan (1969), Khan won his first Filmfare award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. In 1971- 1975 he appeared alongside his real-life brother Sanjay Khan in the hit film Mela.He turned into a successful producer and director so as to improve his career opportunities as a leading man. He produced, directed and starred in the 1975 -77 film Dharmatma which was the first Indian film to be shot in Afghanistan and was also his first blockbuster hit as producer, director and star. This movie was inspired by the Hollywood film The Godfather. In 1976 he was one of the many actors to appear in the cult classic horror film Nagin which also had his brother Sanjay in one of the lead roles. . |

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he was a leading Bollywood star. He directed and starred in many of his films. The movie Qurbani (1980) was the biggest hit of his career and also launched the singing career of iconic Pakistani pop singer Nazia Hassan. In 1986 he directed and starred in Janbaaz which was a box office hit.[2] One of his best movies, with an all star cast, great songs and excellent cinematography. In 1988 he directed and starred in Dayavan which was a remake of a South Indian film titled Nayagan. After he directed and starred in Yalghaar (1992), he took a long break from acting for 11 years and took to producing, directing and even editing a few films. He launched his son Fardeen Khan's career with the 1998 film Prem Aggan which was however a box office failure. In 2003 he produced and directed Janasheen (2003) which also starred his son Fardeen and marked Firoz's acting comeback, it would be pertinent to mention here that he always used performing animals in his films - a Chipanjee & lion were used in this Janasheen but People for Animals (PFA) Haryana -[1] chairman Naresh Kadyan moved a complaint in the court of law at Faridabad for animal cruelty & legal action as per law against the Producer, Director & actor. He starred with his son again in Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena (2005) which was not directed by him and most recently appeared in Welcome (2007).He also starred in the Punjabi film Bhagat Dhanna Jat (1974). . |

In 1965, he married Sundari, a designer and part of the Page Three circuit in Mumbai. They had two children together, Laila and Fardeen Khan (b. 1974). In 1985, after 20 years of marriage, he divorced his wife. His son married Natasha Madhwani, the daughter of his occasional on-screen lover Mumtaz. His daughter Laila is married to Indian tennis player Rohit Rajpal. As he was an animal lover and to mark respect and to pay kind homage and tribute to the departed soul, a representative of the International Organization for Animal Protection - OIPA in India - lit a candle for him. He died on Monday, 27th April, 2009 at the age of 69, in his Bangalore farm house. He was a known Indian nationalist. The actor had been diagnosed with cancer over a year before his death. . |

QurbaniA veteran of the two-hero film, this time Khan pitted himself against Vinod Khanna in a memorable love triangle centering around a delectable Zeenat Aman. Khan's character is a stunt motorcyclist who has become a daring thief, and the actor played it with gusto. . |

Janbaaz Khan directed himself again in this rollicking cop-brother-versus-bad-brother drama, but contrary to his more dashing roles, he took the good guy part this time and let Anil Kapoor play the debauched playboy. It isn't one of Khan's finest performances, but his direction worked perfectly in terms of the film. . |

Dayavan Khan trades characters yet again as he concentrates more on the direction with this film, as he gives Vinod Khanna the Godfather part and casts himself clearly in the role of the second lead. It is a gripping watch, memorable most for the sensational casting of a young Madhuri Dixit in a very provocative role. Yeah, that kiss in the movie was a first for Bollywood: . |

Aadmi Aur InsaanYet another supporting role, this one gave Feroz his first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting actor. He played JK, friend to Dharmendra's Munish. Their friendship is estranged when Munish realises that JK isn't an entirely ethical man, while JK believes Munish's behaviour is a result of a romantic triangle. Things culminate in a thrilling courtroom climax, with both friends opposing each other. . |

UpaasnaThis one's worth it just for the sensational poster. Yet another film starring the Khan brothers, Upaasna featured Mumtaz at her most stunning and Helen in jawdroppingly likewise form. Mohan directed the still-enjoyable Bollywood drama and Feroz was in fine form indeed. . |

ApradhTaking the directorial reins, the ever-flamboyant Feroz cast himself as a Formula 1 driver in Apradh, racing for the world championship -- and clinching it in style. The film, which runs into a high-drama plot about stolen diamonds, is a significant step forward in the evolution of the Indian leading man. . |

Feroze Khan passes away April 27, 2009 11:50:47 AM ISTMaking his way into the hearts of film lovers with the fast-paced movie Qurbani, flamboyant actor and filmmaker Feroz Khan was known for his intense romantic roles and unique action sequences. Action was his forte and Feroz Khan, who believed in living king size, was always associated with excitement and thrill. Right from his childhood he knew he wanted to become a movie star like his matinee idols Douglas Fairbanks, Tony Curtis and Clark Gable. Even at the age of 13, he would dress up like his cowboy heroes in leather boots, Stentsons, riding bareback on horses. Born on September 25, 1939 to an Afghan father and an Iranian mother, the actor made his debut in 1960 with Didi. The brother of Sanjay Khan, Sameer Khan and Akbar Khan, Feroz struggled for five years playing second lead in most movies before he was noticed in Oonche Log, his first major hit. He then went on to woo audience with his portrayal of a sacrificing lover in the musical Arzoo which also starred Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore. The 1969 film Aadmi aur Insaan fetched him his first Filmfare award of Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He also starred with his brother Sanjay Khan in another hit film Mela. The actor also produced and directed many films. Notable among them was Dharmatama in 1975-76. Inspired by Hollywood film, The Godfather, Dharmatama was the first Indian movie to be shot in Afghanistan. But the actor was best remebered for the 1980 blockbuster Qurbani opposite Zeenat Aman. The money spinner, which did business of over one crore, was not only the charismatic actor's biggest hit but also launched the singing career of Pakistani singer Nazia Hassan. The memorable Aap Jaisa Koi track of the film was a rage in the 80s. Feroz was also one of the rare action stars who excelled in socials like Arzoo, Safar, Oonche Log and Admi aur Insaan. Despite co-starring with superstars of the day like Rajendra Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Raaj Kumar and Ashok Kumar, he managed to win his share of appreciation, applause and awards. So polished was Khan's performance as the possessive, insanely jealous and suicidally suspicious husband of the beautiful Sharmila Tagore in Safar that during the shooting film industry insiders would say that it gave jitters to superstar Rajesh Khanna. Khan's popularity with women grew with the popular number in the film Jo Tum ko pasand wohi baat kahenge. In Phani Mujumbar's Oonche log, Khan was pitted against his idols Raaj Kumar and Ashok Kumar. But, the actor pulled off sensitive low key performance surprising every body. The actor, who took the screen name Rajesh or Rakesh in most of his films, also make a mark with films like Janbaaz and Dayavan. Khan also starred in a English movie Tarzan goes Indian produced in 1962, pairing with Simi Garewal. He launched his son Fardeen Khan with the 1998 film Prem Aggan, which, however, bombed at the box office. He went on to make another film starring his son Janasheen. The film also marked his comeback. Khan, a racing buff and owner of several horses, married Sundari, a designer in 1965 and had two children Laila and Fardeen. After 20 years of marriage, he divorced Sundari. The actor was known for his fascination for horses and his early films were action specials. He was labeled as "stunt hero" and was one of the few top riders of the film industry besides Sunil Dutt, Dharmendra and Vinod Khanna. He was at his stylish best astride a stallion and slinging a gun. This was an image of him which impressed his fans right up to the 70s and films like Khote Sikkey and Kala Sona. Even in his home productions Dharmatma, Qurbani and Jaabaaz, the horse remained an enduring image. He raised racing horses in his farm house in Bangalore, where he breathed his last..I just love to see them run. Horses are part of him," he often said. Khan's favourite sport was hunting till 1973 and would always tell friends how he shot 14 panthers and narrowly missed a tiger once and was happy about it. "I loved hunting but it was always the chase I enjoyed not the kill," he would say. Feroz was last seen in Welcome where he played the underworld don RDX. He earned the wrath of Pakistani government for his comments during a visit to the neighbouring country. When Welcome was released in Pakistan, the censor board there asked for deleting Khan's character and releasing the film. A couple of years ago, when sequels and remakes were order of the day in the industry, he announced remake of Qurbani. However, his wish now remains unfulfilled. Shocking news, but we all have to walk that path: Gone but his works will remain with us: RIP Feroze Khan: . |

This was the first Hindi movie I saw when I came to Cda. I always admired him, very good looking and a great actor. Indian movies do not have the actors that it once had. It is sad now looking back at all of these great stars to see them old and slowly leaving this world. It brings us back to reality that they are are also humans and like them we are getting old and will one day die. We still fancy them as young stars and picture them in our minds that they are young and will not get old. I am sad to see him go and more sad that he had to go this way just because of cancer. |
